Happy Friday! Today we have a lot of exciting news to share. First off, Beta2 of aTV Flash (black) is now available. Beta2 includes full support for the 4.1 AppleTV software, a handful of new features and many all-around improvements. Additionally, we have an early preview of a new feature you're sure to love.

Read on for more details on what's in Beta2 as well as a new teaser video.

ATV 4.1 jailbreak - is there one?

The iPhone Dev Team has announced a jailbreak for the new 4.1 (iOS 4.2.1) AppleTV software is nearly complete. Up to this point the only available option for jailbreaking the 4.1 software has been a 'tethered' jailbreak which can be difficult to use and is not recommended for most users. We're hoping to integrate a jailbreak into a future version of aTV Flash (black), but for now Beta2 is ready and waiting once the new jailbreak is released.

What's new in Beta2?

In addition to adding full support for the 4.1 (iOS 4.2.1) software we've been able to add some great extra features. More details below.

Installer & Maintenance

  • Added Windows compatible installer (requires Windows XP or later)
  • Improved error handling during installation (no more mysterious password prompts)
  • Improved version checking for app downloads
  • Minor bug fixes

Couch Surfer

  • Added optimized navigation when using the standard Apple remote
  • Added search and url suggestion engine
  • Added user-agent toggle setting
  • Many additional improvements

Last.fm

  • Added streaming support for Australia, Canada, Germany, and New Zealand
  • Added 'Growl' style notifications
  • Improved Last.fm scrobbling
  • Many additional improvements

How do I get Beta2?

aTV Flash (black) Beta2 is available as a free download in your account (the download links in your account will always point to the latest version). If you're already running the first beta, you can update directly on the AppleTV through the Maintenance --> Manage Extras menu.

Early preview of additional codec support

Last but certainly not least we have made some exciting progress as we work towards enabling support for additional media formats. We still have a quite a few challenges to overcome and this feature is not yet ready for beta testing. Check out the teaser below for more details.

hi guys,

you have done a great work nobody have come so far yet

have you heard of playing flash videos on iOS devices without jailbreaking?

URL: http://iosflashvideo.fw.hu/

will it work with your atv flash (black) software too?

Submitted by joseluis on December 10, 2010 - 12:12pm

the mkv source is in 1080p and the output of the aTV is 1080p??I think that this would make me trash my WD TV and left the AppleTV alone as "the" Media Center (streaming directly from my Time Capsule)…

Nice work fellas! Im so hoping the new jailbreak isnt just for previously JB'd devices!!! Either way u guys are doing some great work!

Submitted by foxinsox on December 10, 2010 - 12:33pm

Will you soon be updating the jailbreak instructions for Windows so I can FINALLY install this...?? Still pissed that I paid $39.95 for ATV and a free upgrade, then the price was only $19.95...sure hope it's worth the $20 difference!!

So does beta2 run on the original 4.0 (4.1) software too? Or is this ONLY for the next version?I don't want to maintenance update if its gonna break what I have going on now. Wink

Submitted by lprunk on December 10, 2010 - 2:12pm

Well, i know the Apple TV(unjailbroken) can play 1080p videos from iTunes, but it scales them to 720p before playing.

You guys need to be a little more clear on the status of plugins. Under 4.1 (4.2.1), it seems that literally every plugin fails on install. Plex, Last.Fm, and your browser all return errors. It's flat out wrong to say that beta 2 includes "full support" for 4.1, as the plugins currently contain NO support for 4.1

Submitted by james on December 10, 2010 - 3:26pm

Sorry, that's definitely not normal. Shoot us an email and we can help troubleshoot. http://firecore.com/contact

Folks,

You seem to be making a lot of assumptions that those of us not familiar with Jail Breaking our AppleTV will know exactly what you are talking about in this post. Might I suggest you create step by step instructions for me getting thew product I bought from you to work on my Apple TV using Windows to set it up based on your latest release and the status of the Jail Breaks available. Really feels like you started selling a product that couldn't be used and while you stated the info about 4.1 in your blog post, you didn't make it clear in the process of buying that I wouldn't be able to use it until another group of folks created a way for me to Jailbreak the device, so that I could then install the product I bought from you.

I know you had one set of instructions up previously, but you need to update it regularly and then you need to use the list you created to notify me when I can use the product. You keep releasing new versions and I am not getting any email notifications despite being a paying customer.

Thanks,
Brad

The practical differences between 1080p and 720p aren't worth bothering about IMHO. Most people won't comment on the difference, so when you consider the extra download, storage and processing requirements of full 1080p, it makes it a bit of a tough sell! I'm not saying it's not better, just not better enough.

Well done on getting some progress with aTV Black.

Submitted by james on December 10, 2010 - 4:34pm

Sorry for the confusion. As of right now aTV Flash (black) requires the AppleTV to be jailbroken. There are a number of community created jailbreak tools which make this process relatively easy, though there is a bit of lag from when a new AppleTV software version is released and the release of a compatible jailbreak tool.

As mentioned in the blog post we may work to integrate a jailbreak into an upcoming version of aTV Flash (black) which would definitely simplify the entire process - however for now we've decided to focus on creating apps and just let the jailbreak guys do their thing.

If you haven't already, you should be receiving an email notification soon (they usually are sent out in chunks).

Hi James,

wonderful job on the codec support, can't wait to try it!
I have a few questions though:
1. does the aTV black play native 1080p MKVs, or does it down samples them to 720p?
2. what about subtitles support, is that a forthcoming feature?
3. about Last.fm - will more countries be added down the road?

Thank you, and keep up the good work!

Hi James,Hats off to all the fantastic stuff you guys are doing. The project is definitely taking more shape with every update that is released. Keep up the good work!I still havent received any download links for the beta testing. Am I doing anything wrong? Is the email for the download link to be expected 'cause I cant see any download link even in my account section on your website.Thanks.

I know that local USB storage is not in this beta, but can I stream (preferably .avi files) from an external HDD hooked to a Time Capsule to the aTV?

I've read that the usb port on the aTV is designed as a slave only, so will it even be possible to have a HDD hooked to it?

Submitted by Anonymous on December 10, 2010 - 8:01pm

is it at all possible to download an shsh blob for the 4.0 firmware so that I can go back to the 4.0 firmware?? My atv updated to 4.1 (4.2.1) and want to downgrade (even though it has been said it is impossible unless you have backed up ur shsh blobs). OR......can someone let me know how to jailbreak the 4.1 (4.2.1)?? please!!!!!

Submitted by MrNarwhal on December 10, 2010 - 11:17pm

Is that true about the USB being a slave only? That would be a HUGE bummer as that is one of the main reasons I got aTV and the Apple TV... Anyone know for sure?

Submitted by MrNarwhal on December 10, 2010 - 11:23pm

Will connecting to an external hard drive be supported any time soon (the next month...)? Is it going to be possible? Would love to get some sort of response on this as this is main reason I bought aTV.Thanks guys!

Submitted by camtab on December 11, 2010 - 1:43am

I know you have commented a Jailbreak is coming for 4.1 (iOS 4.2.1) but as others have mentioned, it would be great if you could post or attach a detailed "how to jailbreak" that incorporates that iOS version. I have tried to follow other sites instructions, but try as I might I can not get the ATV to go into DFU mode which pretty much stumps the process. I will wait for a proper 4.1 jailbreak for the ATV before throwing my toys but any assistance would be great when they time comes. The instructions seem to be for every hardware version OTHER than the ATV (no power/menu button to hold down)

Submitted by Grunt357 on December 11, 2010 - 10:10am

Hey claytonr,

Once you have upgraded your Apple TV to 4.2.1, you cannot downgrade it, that is, unless you saved your SSH file using TinyUmbrella, before upgrading...

You will need to wait, while the guys add further features for 4.2.1...

Submitted by Grunt357 on December 11, 2010 - 10:13am

MANUALLY put the AppleTV in DFU

DFU Mode;

Hold Menu for 7 Seconds

Without releasing menu, press power / play button for 7 seconds.
After 7 seconds release both buttons - if you time it correctly, you will be in DFU

Submitted by ryan.8141 on December 11, 2010 - 10:30am

I would just like to clarify something important here. With this beta you cannot stream Plex to AppleTV 4.1 (aka 4.2.1). In fact the Plex-pliugin doesn't even install correctly because there is a post scrip that runs at the end of installation commanding the AppleTV to restart Lowtide which no longer exists with the 4.1 (4.2.1) firmware... One other major thing to point out, even if you manually killall AppleTV (the actual command to soft reboot the AppleTV (replaced killall Lowtide)) you still won't see the Plex plugin because they don't make a soft link to the plex plugins appliances folder.... all in all I feel scammed that they show a video streaming under this beta release claiming aTV Flash Black for 4.1 (4.2.1) Plex (alpha) scam... basically they take the plex plugin for 4.0 AppleTV and attempt to install it on 4.1 AppleTV... sooooo save your money.. buy some dippers for your babies...

Submitted by ryan.8141 on December 11, 2010 - 10:31am

Hey! instead of updating your firmware I'll just send you my appleTV with 4.1 on it and you send me yours with 4.0 on it! Deal??!!
