We are pleased to announce the release of aTV Flash version 4.3 for the original silver AppleTV. Included are some new features, as well as a number of improvements to existing features and core components. Read on for more details.

What's new in 4.3?

  • Added File Sharing (SMB Server)
  • Improved DVD file playback
  • Improved metadata scrapers
  • Improved Last.fm scrobbling (2.0)
  • Improved FTP and SSH connections
  • Improved memory management
  • Improved installation routine
  • Improved system tools
  • Minor UI improvements
  • Other miscellaneous fixes

What can I do with File Sharing?

File Sharing allows you to stream non-iTunes media stored on your AppleTV (including media stored on external drives) to other devices including a second AppleTV (silver or black) or a Mac/PC computer.

How to use File Sharing

After installing the File Sharing package through the Maintenance --> Install Extras menu, the File Sharing option can be enabled through the Maintenance --> Settings menu.

When File Sharing is enabled (or set to Auto-Start) the relevant connection info will be visible when the File Sharing item is highlighted. The AppleTV's username and password are both 'frontrow' (without quotes).

Great! Where can I get it?

aTV Flash version 4.3 is available through the Downloads tab in your account. If you're already running aTV Flash on your AppleTV you can update through the Maintenance --> Manage Plugins menu.

Enjoy! Smile

They send me this minutes after posting that their updates have bricked my ATV1? Coincidence?

Submitted by james on June 1, 2011 - 2:12pm

NitoTV's networking feature allows you to stream from other devices to the AppleTV.

The new File Sharing feature allows the AppleTV to act as a server and stream to other devices.

Well, AirPlay for VIDEO was added back in January. I was meaning audio. But I see that this was added in April. I never received an announcement about this. Still, that's great news!

I can't install File Sharing. I get each time the same error message saying that the installation failed. Anyone has an idea how to solve this?

Submitted by james on June 1, 2011 - 2:25pm

Before installing the File Sharing package, ensure you are running the latest version of Maintenance. The latest version can be installed through the Maintenance --> Manage Plugins menu.

Still no audio when re-IPL'ing Apple TV since installing Core(this is the audio during the visual presentation that plays when the unit is operating purely as Apple TV) - is this ever going to be resolved??

I have an older version of ATV Flash (from March, 2010).  Problem I have is when I switched to the external drive (since I ran out of room) there is now an approx. 10 second lag in between songs when playing "my music".  Has this problem been addressed?

Submitted by james on June 1, 2011 - 2:51pm

Can you check the version of aTV Flash you are running through the Maintenance --> About menu?

Submitted by james on June 1, 2011 - 2:52pm

You can find the latest version under the Downloads tab in your account.

Submitted by james on June 1, 2011 - 2:53pm

This sounds like it may be a hardware issue. Do you have an alternate USB cable you can try?

Please open a support ticket if you're still having trouble.

Great! :)

Wish they would clean up existing features rather than adding.

Everytime my NAS goes to sleep, the AppleTV loses connection and has to be power cycled to see it again.

I would prefer the "My Movies" menu hold all my movies wether via iTunes streamed, synced or on my NAS. This was communicated that it would be a feature soon - not so far.

I have a different Settings menu:
System info
- ATV Version 3.0.2
- SoftwareMenu Version 1.0b1
Main Menu Settings
Menu toggles
Collection of Shelf
etc.

Mine aTV is diferent than what you talking about above???
Thanks:
Steve

Sorry for wasting your time James just realized it's for the original atv silver.

E-mail update got me confused

Submitted by Anon on June 1, 2011 - 3:15pm

Can't see any improvement in dvd playback in nito tv - it's still hit and miss whether a dvd folder plays or not and still more stuttering. Can't we have the improved media player from atv2...now THAT is fast and plays almost anything!!! Using xbmc to play dvds is slow and tedious.

What about BBC Iplayer?

Submitted by Anon on June 1, 2011 - 3:31pm

Thanks James !.. I was afraid the old ATV was going to be passed by .. all updates seem to have gone well remotely from upstairs via RemoteHD from the iPad Tongue

Hi James

Thanks for the update. Glad to see your still supporting those of us with the atv1. Any plans to add BBC iPlayer for us? Can't get it to work through the browser no matter what I try

Submitted by raforbes on June 1, 2011 - 4:15pm

Thanks - I was worried you had abandoned the 1st Gen silver ATV...

Submitted by Anon on June 1, 2011 - 4:36pm

Hi James,

I installed the new Nito TV but when trying to install after the download is said..."Install Failed after popping the controller for 5 seconds"

Where to go from here? Everything else updated and installed.

Thanks,

Larry

Do you currently have the Maintenance menu visible on your AppleTV?

The screenshot above is taken from the Maintenance --> Settings menu.

Submitted by luomat on June 1, 2011 - 4:53pm

It would be really nice if these announcements could tell me how large the update is to download (5mb? 100? 500?)

Submitted by Anon on June 1, 2011 - 5:03pm

Too bad I can not access my external USB drive which is attached to my ATV with my iPad so I can watch movies on the external USB on my iPad... Or can I?

All in all... Thanks for keeping the 1st Gen ATV alive!

Submitted by dleperou on June 1, 2011 - 5:05pm

Does this update allow to copy data from aTV music folder back to a Mac to be used as back-up??

Submitted by sarahcat on June 1, 2011 - 5:17pm

Please clarify the following:

Added File Sharing (SMB Server) ...to which devices?
Improved metadata scrapers ...what metadata scraped from?
Improved Last.fm scrobbling (2.0) ...scrobbling? WTF?

Just to clear this up.  If i have a HDD connected to one Apple TV and I want to watch that content through sapphire on another Apple TV in my house that is possible?  If so that is fantastic news.

BBC iPlayer is in Hitcher's add ons for XBMC.

I've added the file sharing update to both my appleTV's and enabled on both. Where do I go on each device to see the other - I can't work it out.
