It's a brand new year, and we've wasted no time getting back to work making the AppleTV even more awesome. As a result, we're happy to present you with a fresh, new version of aTV Flash (black) which features a number of great new things including: video zoom options, grid view watched icons, quick access to recently visited pages, improved support for subtitles, and a truckload of other improvements and bug fixes.

Full details on what's new and how to update can be found below.

New Zoom Options

Three all new zoom options (Normal, Crop, and Stretch) allow you choose how videos are displayed. You can keep videos in their native format (widescreen or pillar box) or crop/stretch them to fill the entire screen.

Grid View Watched Indicators

Watched indicator icons have been added to the grid view. These icons allow you to quickly see which content is new and ready to be enjoyed. (Note: These can be disabled through the Media --> Settings menu if desired)

'Watched indicator icons have been added to the grid view. These icons allow you to quickly see which content is new and ready to be enjoyed. (Note: These can be disabled through the Media --> Settings menu if desired)'

There should be option to show icons which items are new. Just oposite from what you gave. Some star or sth else. I don't what to know what I have watched, I want to know what is new. Now every movie are with this icon and it looks bad. I want icons which means "NEW" and after I will watched it will disappear. PLEASE!!!

Submitted by james on January 17, 2012 - 1:36pm

This is actually how it works.

New items will show a blue corner, partially watched items will show a gray corner, and watched items will show no corner at all.

Ah... sorry jumped the gun on that question

Submitted by Anon on January 17, 2012 - 1:45pm

Watching some old rips of the wire, and the screen has gone letterbox rather than resizing 16:9

Any ideas, doesn't seem to be a configurable option anywhere....

Is plex back?

Submitted by Anon on January 17, 2012 - 1:49pm

Is there a way to scan metadata in sub-folders?
My Movies folder contain sub-folders with the actual movies, I have to browse all the way to the movie file to get the movie poster (grid view).
Du I have to have all my movies in the same folder in order to get the same view like I have in XBMC, Plex etc.?
Thanks,
Morris

Thanks for the great job guys. Love it that you have such frequent and nice updates. This is exactly what I wanted, keep track of what's new and what you have seen. Great for series espessially.

Hopefully this fixes the NBA league pass disappearance issue? If not, I guess we know they never read these comments.

Any chance of fixing the glitch that crashes playback on Netflix?

Submitted by kevinc.9072 on January 17, 2012 - 1:58pm

Great update guys thanks...

Wondering if there is any way of adding a manual poster for files where there is no metadata ? This would be very handy for the odd item... i have a few that a driving me crazy :)

Thanks !

Still experience problems with folder with "/" in the name. Everything before "/" is cut off and only displays the rest of the folder name. The contents in that folder isn't recognized by mediaplayer and shows an empty folder even though it has contents. Forced reboot didn't help.

It happens. Smile

Take the slashes out of your folder names. It's a special character when navigating folders.

Submitted by Anon on January 17, 2012 - 2:04pm

Oh, that would be SO fucking awesome! I can't wait!

Submitted by kevinc.9072 on January 17, 2012 - 2:04pm

thanks - not sure how i missed that Smile Cheers !

are you having trouble getting it into DFU mode? I spent hours and hours getting it done. Basically what I ended up doing in the end was swapping out the cable i was using for another one. It seemed that the action of swapping the cable was more important than the cable itself (because i had already failed with the previous cable). Something about pulling the cable and putting in a new one triggered the entry into DFU mode.

The new XBMC Eden build has addressed my performance complaints with it on aTV. Switched from Plex to XBMC for now until Plex is back in good graces. Maybe give it a try... then you can use Icefilms too.

Submitted by Anon on January 17, 2012 - 2:06pm

What about Plex. Will it soon work?

Submitted by glandix on January 17, 2012 - 2:06pm

Great work as always!  LOVE the new icons in grid view ... figured that would be coming one of these days and it's finally here! Grin the updates on metadata display for TV shows is great, too ... the season/ep indicator previously drove me nuts because i kept wanting to read it as episode [x] of [total] Wink

Submitted by foreignthinker on January 17, 2012 - 2:07pm

In the firecore support forum it was indicated this is an issue associated with aTV in general.  I have found with or without a jailbreak and aTV flash installed netflix crashes seemingly at random during playback. When Apple fixes this, it will likely disappear with aTV flash

Submitted by Anon on January 17, 2012 - 2:08pm

Im having issues syncing up my comp with the firecore media player ... i type my user and password correctly yet it still tells me that it is not authorized to connect can someone help thanks!!

Submitted by Anon on January 17, 2012 - 2:08pm

As always a welcome improvement.

I still am curious though - any chance to get the media center to have plug-ins a la XBMC? It would be great to have an icefilms plug-in there rather than needing XBMC. Keeps things clean.

Hi, will there be a direct support for eyetv netstream in a future version? Then it would be perfect by watching TV without running Eyetv on the Mac.

regards,
Bane

Submitted by Anon on January 17, 2012 - 2:10pm

phew, thought it was firecore. Thanks for the reply.

I found three updates in my ATV Maintenance manage extras... couch surfer pro , maintenance, and media player. All three updates failed!

E:dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure-a' to correct the problem.

huh? how do I do that?

Submitted by Anon on January 17, 2012 - 2:11pm

Still waiting for RAR support... Crossing my fingers though!

Submitted by perl.9390 on January 17, 2012 - 2:11pm

That feature I would also welcome very very much!
Good stuff! Good work!

Submitted by james on January 17, 2012 - 2:13pm

Try re-running the aTV Flash (black) installer from your Mac or PC. That should clear up what's going on.

Submitted by russellweed on January 17, 2012 - 2:13pm

Awesome. Is there any way to mark an entire folder as "Watched" now? For TV episodes where you've watched the whole season already.

Any plans to add that 'new' indicator to List view? (You could just put the blue dot in front of the folder name like what you already do w/ filenames...)

Or meta data to the folder?

Still no support for playing m2v, mov, on webpages in Couch Surfer as promised?

Submitted by Anon on January 17, 2012 - 2:14pm

Are you planning on including external hard drive support as in the first gen any time soon?

Thanks.
