Wow, what a week! We had quite a few exciting announcements yesterday from Apple, not the least of which was a brand-new, 1080p capable Apple TV. We are uber excited about this new model and already have a handful of test units on order. Better hardware usually lends itself to better software, and the Apple TV should be no exception. Keep reading for more information on what all this means for you as well as your current aTV Flash (black) license.

What does the new Apple TV 3 offer? Should I upgrade?

At this point, it appears the only real difference between the ATV2 and ATV3 is the video resolution. The ATV2 has a max resolution of 720p, whereas the ATV3 supports 1080p. There may be new features introduced in the future that will be ATV3 only, but for now unless you're playing 1080p content you will not see much of a difference between the two models. The new menu layout that was demoed yesterday by Apple on the ATV3 will also be available on the ATV2.

What about the new 5.0 software? Can I update my Apple TV?

aTV Flash (black) is currently only compatible with Apple TV versions 4.2 - 4.4.4, and if you update you lose will your jailbreak and FireCore added features. However, if you have saved firmware signatures you can easily downgrade the Apple TV software at any time, so feel free to update to 5.0 and check it out.

Will aTV Flash (black) be compatible?

There will undoubtedly be a few obstacles to overcome in order to get everything up to speed, but based on our past experiences and progress thus far we're confident we can put the pieces in place to make it happen.

Once an updated version is ready we'll be rolling these changes into an aTV Flash (black) update, which will result in a universal application that is compatible with both the ATV2 and ATV3. The best part is users of aTV Flash (black) will be able to install it on either model without having to pay any extra fees.

That all sounds great, but what's new in aTV Flash (black) 1.4?

Last, but certainly not least, we have a new version of aTV Flash (black) available today to help tide you over until the new models arrive. Full details on what's included in version 1.4 can be found below.

Good work! As always

absolutely can't wait. I've been waiting for 1080p for soo many long years!!! + on top of that firecore flash!!!

Submitted by Anon on March 8, 2012 - 12:05pm

Good to hear! But To be honest, having just jail broken last week no chance am I losing all my atv flash black goodness for the sake of a new GUI. The additional Atv Flash functionality is well better than that. Even though this looks to be a blatant precursor for apps/expanded content on the atv (iOS6/ or 5.X in Apple naming convention world) I know Apple and they ain't increasing codec support EVER so there will always be a place for software on my machine.

Firecore, you truly have freed up the possibilities of that little black puck. Thank you and keep up the good work.

Is there a way to get Hulu plus on this?

Submitted by Anon on March 8, 2012 - 12:09pm

Very excited. Thanks for continuing to roll out the improvements!

Submitted by ericrwalker on March 8, 2012 - 12:09pm

Love the updates, can't wait to get home and update this.  Keep them coming, you have come far.

I hope this fixes the issues I have with a few ISO dvd rips I have.  Probably 5% of mine will not play with "Media Player"

Submitted by Fofer on March 8, 2012 - 12:09pm

Once XBMC is installed, there is a userscript that can be installed that lets you access the Hulu (and Hulu Plus) catalog.  It is clunky to traverse, but it works.  It's not included as part of the aTV Flash (black) install, though.

Hey guys. Any chance of implementing video signal orientation options? AppleTV + aTV is a perfect combination for digital signage, but need to be able to feed a vertical screen.

Submitted by Anon on March 8, 2012 - 12:11pm

Any chance of getting the USB port to mount drives so we no longer have to stream? In the works?

Submitted by Bitwize on March 8, 2012 - 12:11pm

Excellent additions!! (e.g.  TrueHD downmix)

Any chance that bitstreaming HD audio will be feasible with the ATV 3?  Probably not, but it's fun to daydream Wink

Submitted by Anon on March 8, 2012 - 12:13pm

Was giving up on ATV2, because xbmc was jerky to the extreme. Then I decided to give your software a go and now I love my atv2. Gonna install this update in a few minutes Smile

Submitted by Fofer on March 8, 2012 - 12:13pm

Ack! I am geting "Installation Failed" when I try to install any of the updates. When I look at the error log, it says "Write Error - no space left on device."

What can I do to free up some space? All I've got is that ATV (black) standard stuff, nothing exotic beyond that. Are there caches or old leftovers, incomplete media stream leftovers I can delete?

EDIT:  Nevermind!  I SSH'ed in and deleted cache files from here and now all is golden:

I'm still on RC1. To upgrade to v1.4, do I need to start from v1.0? or can I jump directly to v1.4?

You can just run the 1.4 installer from a Mac or PC to update.

You won't need to use any of the 1.0 - 1.3 versions.

Submitted by Fofer on March 8, 2012 - 12:15pm

"have to stream?"

I *prefer* streaming!  Who wants to plug in a USB drive?  That's old school.  Of course, choice is good and all... but if I had to choose I'd go with streaming over connected USB drive all the time.

Submitted by Anon on March 8, 2012 - 12:17pm

You all are great. Thanks a lot for being on top of this.

I have a running license of atv black, but forgot to upgrade to 4.4.4 (still on 4.2). How could I upgrade to 4.4.4, now than the new update from apple is out? Do not want to loose atv, but also I do want to have a newer system (4.4.4).

Submitted by jdoorman on March 8, 2012 - 12:23pm

What a breeze, wish that all were so easy to install.

A job well done.

Submitted by Anon on March 8, 2012 - 12:23pm

Still no support for EyeTV Netstream Frown
Will this be supported with next versions?

Submitted by andyc172 on March 8, 2012 - 12:23pm

Please don't ruin the ATV by forcing the awful new GUI on us in the next version... :(

Any chance of giving us editable menus. Would be great to hide/prioritise more items in the menus.. ;)

Here's the biggie... Any chance of embedding BBC iplayer into the menus for the brits among us? B-)

I bought aTV Flash weeks ago and I'm still waiting for somebody from support to answer my email on how to get it installed! My Apple TV jail broke fine with SeasonPass but I can not get my Apple TV (Black) to show up in the drop down menu and I have tried everything! Regardless of what I do it will not show up.

Can this new version be installed via a USB drive or has anything been done with this problem? Judging from your own forums, I'm not the only one going through this.

I have Apple TV 2 jailbroken and licensed aTV flash running on fw 4.4.4.

My question is: can I upgrade my AppleTV2 to iOS 5 and use aTV flash without jailbreak?

Thank you in advance Wink

P.S. keep up good work !!!

Submitted by ton on March 8, 2012 - 12:27pm

When I read 'EyeTV" then I expected to see only the .Eyetv packages and not stuff like .EyetvSched. Can I realize this myself or can you enhance the Mediaplayer?

Would be great!

Submitted by Anon on March 8, 2012 - 12:28pm

This is great! Thanks for keeping up the good work and the info. I have a question/feature request. I'd love to have live soccer in the Internet section like MLB or NHL. Any word on this?

My main language is spanish and when I play a movie with external spanish subtitles the extended characters looks all wrong, like ¿ or ñ or á,é,í,ó,ú....

Will this be fixed with the latest version???

thanks for your excelent work

You can resolve the subtitle issue by adjusting the encoding type as described here.

One of the beauties of the apple tv is its portability. Visiting family? Take apple tv with you if it has USB option. Take apple tv, iMac, wireless router? I think not.

There 2 additions to the new Apple TV - 1080p and CPU update your statement above.

Submitted by Anon on March 8, 2012 - 12:40pm

awesome update! Smile

Can't wait to go both to iOS5 ánd the next aTV Flash update though… the interface of the homescreen looks like a nice improvement. I'll get the ATV3 if or when Apple decides to implement more features into it. 1080p is very nice obviously, but not enough for me (yet) Smile

I love aTV Flash and the fact that you have continued to periodically release updates of the aTV Flash version that supports the 1st generation Apple TV. I continue to use this product and hope to do so for a long time as my media infrastructure requires me to have component video rather than HDMI. With Apple's announcements from yesterday I am wondering if I can hope for another release of aTV Flash (silver) in the future?

I put a m3u file in the shared folder, but I do not appear in the list of files.

Hi guys,

When I'm streaming from web sites using add-ons some movies are plying jerkily. how to fix that? I'm using Apple TV2.

Submitted by benc.20222 on March 8, 2012 - 2:37pm

Great Work, especially to Couch Surfer Pro as it now plays TVcatchup here in the UK. Thanks

One observation is that if the header is hidden/disabled in iPad agent, this site (not checked any others yet) is not centralised horizontally on the screen but is 'hard left'.

This isn't a major deal but id like to hide the header to give more real-estate over to the web page. Can this be fixed or any thoughts/guidance?

Submitted by Anon on March 8, 2012 - 2:39pm

Are there any plans to add native Hulu/Hulu+ support to aTV Flash? Right now I watch Hulu on my Xbox and literally everything else on my AppleTV. I would love to be able to do everything on one device.

Submitted by thechrisreese on March 8, 2012 - 2:56pm

Thanks James!

I have used aTV Flash for a while but just recently started streaming media from my mini.

Two items have come up - 1) menu flattening has led to my season, episode file structure to be useless if only one show is in them (i delete after I watch) and I would love the option to turn this off & 2) I cannot delete a file folder with file management which happens if I have a .rar folder that I convert to .mp4, the folder cannot be deleted unless I go on my mini.

aTV Flash is awesome, can't live without it at home.  The only reason my automatic system breaks down is these two above points.  Would love to be able to turn off menu flattening and delete folders from in aTV.

Submitted by Ed Brenner on March 8, 2012 - 3:22pm

No the AppleTV unit has to be jailbroke to use aTV Flash.

Submitted by rjackal on March 8, 2012 - 3:29pm

The USB port on the ATV2 is client-only, meaning it cannot be used to mount drives.

Submitted by faf407 on March 8, 2012 - 4:11pm

I agree. Could you filter out folders ending in .eyetvsched. Having these .sched folders makes sorting by date useless. Perhaps could have a EyeTV content type.

Making this change would really make the EyeTV folder detection useful.

Submitted by firecoreaccount on March 8, 2012 - 4:40pm

For the last few versions I've found the response to remote button presses in the Maintenance menu very delayed. For example you click down several times and after about 5 seconds the cursor suddenly moves down that number of clicks. This is happening with the original remote and ONLY in the Maintenance menu - all other menus and applications work fine. Anyone else experiencing this and is there a fix?

At first i have to say thank you for the great work. The EyeTV support in this way is a very nice feature. But a filter to hide the folder with .eyetvsched, would be helpful. So i can unplug my mac-mini. Then it would be really perfect!!!
