Today we're happy to release new versions of Seas0nPass and aTV Flash (black) that are compatible with latest 5.0 (iOS 5.1) software running on the ATV2. A ton of work has gone into getting everything updated, and a huge thanks go out to Brandon Holland (@640774n6) and Dustin Howett (@DHowett) who both contributed immensely in adding support for 5.0.

Is this a tethered or untethered jailbreak? What's the difference?

Seas0nPass currently provides a tethered jailbreak for the new 5.0 (iOS 5.1) Apple TV software. Functionally, both jailbreak types are identical, the only difference being that a tethered jailbreak requires the Apple TV to be connected to a Mac/PC when first powering it on. Since the Apple TV doesn't have a battery, and is rarely ever powered off, this usually only needs to be done once.

What's new in the 5.0 Apple TV software? Should I update?

  • New interface: - Fast, visual access to all content choices
  • Movie purchases in iCloud: Support for buying movies on Apple TV and playing back purchased movies from iCloud
  • Genius Recommendations: Recommendations for content on the iTunes Store based on previous rentals and purchases
  • Screensaver photos: New National Geographic photos built-in for screensaver
  • On-device sign-up: On-device sign up for content partners on Apple TV using your Apple ID

Updating to the new 5.0 software is not required, and all aTV Flash (black) features will continue to be supported on Apple TV versions 4.2 and later.

What about the ATV3, will this work?

Unfortunately not. Work is still ongoing for the ATV3, and we hope to have more news soon. For the latest updates be sure to follow us on Twitter.

Which plugins are currently supported on 5.0?

  • Couch Surfer (works)
  • Last.fm (works)
  • Maintenance (works)
  • Media Player (works)
  • NitoTV (works)
  • Plex (works)
  • Remote HD (works)
  • Rowmote (works)
  • RSS Feeds (works)
  • Weather (works)
  • XBMC (works)
  • Overflow (not working)

Note: Non-working items require an author update for 5.0 compatibility.

Tethered! Last time I did that we suffered a couple power outages and I had to redo the entire install.

Guess I'll wait for an 'untethered' option.

(Hopes dashed)

Tethered JB is not that bad! I will go for it!

Submitted by Anon on March 30, 2012 - 2:10pm

are there any chances that you could use the old interface on firmware 5.0?

Submitted by Anon on March 30, 2012 - 2:23pm

i only use my atv to use xbmc !!! if not working i will not update

"a tethered jailbreak requires the AppleTV to be connected to a Mac/PC when first powering it on. Since the AppleTV doesn't have a battery, and is rarely ever powered off, this usually only needs to be done once."

Can someone confirm that this means ANY time the device is turned on, it must be connected to my computer?  Maybe I'm in the minority, but I turn the AppleTV off after use (specifically b/c I use a Harmony Remote, and switching between DVR, PS3, XBox, and ATV turns off devices not in use).  Is this correct?

If so, looks like I'll have to wait for an untethered solution. Frown

Same here... :(

Submitted by breakblossom on March 30, 2012 - 2:28pm

This is ridiculous. We wait a month for an update to jailbreak and its tethered? Firecore has never even offered tethered jailbreaks before because they're a total waste of time. AND this doesn't even support the new apple tv? What gives???? When can we expect untethered and ATV 3???

Submitted by Anon on March 30, 2012 - 2:28pm

tethered is worthless....very disappointed...i thought we were passed that stage....for someone with a desktop this is pure junk and a pure tease

Submitted by Anon on March 30, 2012 - 2:28pm

Well, that's annoying. I just bought this, thinking it was now ready for my ATV3, but, now that I read all the way to the bottom that it doesn't actually support my new ATV!

Submitted by Anon on March 30, 2012 - 2:29pm

Agreed!

Submitted by breakblossom on March 30, 2012 - 2:29pm

Whats worse is I sold 3/4 of my Apple tv 2's to buy Apple tv 3's and can't use any of them till this gets sorted : ( Come on guys help us out, we all pay a lot of money every year to keep doing this : (

Submitted by rasmusk.9359 on March 30, 2012 - 2:29pm

I will give it a try. Hey what else to do on a friday night......and reinstall.....pfft does it really take that much time from your life not to try it?

Submitted by Edwin66 on March 30, 2012 - 2:35pm

Thx for the effort...but i will wait for the xbmc update too....

Submitted by Anon on March 30, 2012 - 2:35pm

Great news!
I'll guess there is a untehthered within a few days then! Wink
Then it's worth saving 9B179b blobs... havent got that working yet though..

Submitted by Anon on March 30, 2012 - 2:36pm

REMEMBER GUYS

xbmc need author update... nothing to do with FIRECORE....

however i really need to see a untethered version.. i will wait too... this wont work for me either Smile

GREAT JOB JAILBREAK TEAM!!!!!!! BECAUSE OF GUYS LIKE YOU.. APPLE MAKE MILLIONS!!!

Submitted by Anon on March 30, 2012 - 2:36pm

*Yawn* - nothing to see here.

Submitted by Anon on March 30, 2012 - 2:36pm

Xbmc is the main thing people use. How can a tethered jailbreak be any good for anyone? Atleast your all trying very hard. Keep up the good work

Submitted by ctyrider on March 30, 2012 - 2:37pm

You guys need to clearly put "Tethered" in the title of the blog post, just to make it immediately clear what this is.   You grossly trivialize the distinction between "tethered" and "untethered" Jailbreak in your FAQ.   Majority of your users DO NOT want to deal with the hassle of Mac-based tethered-boot of ATV, every time there is a power loss or device move.

How Can I Install iOS5 in my jailbreaked ATV2?

Submitted by nealg.1174 on March 30, 2012 - 2:39pm

I'm desperately awaiting the ATV 3 untethered jailbreak. I just upgraded from an ATV 1 and used XBMC all the time. I don't like seeing only a file name without a description, artwork, and rating.

Submitted by Anon on March 30, 2012 - 2:39pm

"Firecore has never even offered tethered jailbreaks before".

Incorrect. 4.4.4 was tethered until recently - http://blog.firecore.com/6434

It doesn't support the new Apple TV because it's a different processor. And Apple usually work stuff in to ensure the previous jailbreaks don't work with the latest version. They do it with all their iOS products.

Submitted by Anon on March 30, 2012 - 2:39pm

ATV (black box) DOES turn off when my TV and computer are off....the old silver ones always stayed on

Submitted by davidb.1496 on March 30, 2012 - 2:40pm

Tethered...

No ATV3

No Plex etc. (Yeah - I know 3rd party but still)...

VERY disappointing. Holding on to my two ATV2 pre 5.1 for now - but it may be time to shelve an Apple product and look for other media streaming devices if the Native apple interface doesn't improve (they need to take a page from PLEX or Firecore - no media search function is criminal).

The writing may be on the wall for Firecore unfortunately. Too bad. They've had a great product and seem to be a good bunch of people over there.

Submitted by davidb.1496 on March 30, 2012 - 2:42pm

XBMC on the ATV is horrid. Incredibly unstable.

Firecore's media player is pretty stable.

PLEX is a very slick interface and streams to your ipad/iphone remotely.

Submitted by andrzej on March 30, 2012 - 2:42pm

Still waiting for untethered jailbreak of ATV2 5.1

Submitted by Anon on March 30, 2012 - 2:42pm

Quit being dumb. Most of their jailbreaks are tethered at first until someone figures out a way to make it "untethered". It's not like they want it to be tethered or something.

Submitted by Anon on March 30, 2012 - 2:42pm

XBMC is most powerfull. Tons of plugins make XBMC greatest. Please, repair it Frown

Submitted by Anon on March 30, 2012 - 2:43pm

Great work, thanks Firecore for keeping the updates coming, you rock!

And to some other commenters: please do not forget that jailbreaking a new iOS release is not easy or straight forward, so even a tethered jailbreak is a big step forward.

Submitted by Anon on March 30, 2012 - 2:43pm

SOOOOOO glad I read the fine print instead of just running the update. Tethered + No XBMC would have made me VERY angry indeed.

Submitted by Anon on March 30, 2012 - 2:43pm

Yes they have.

Get your facts right.

Submitted by davidb.1496 on March 30, 2012 - 2:43pm

I ALMOST did the same. I only picked up 1 ATV3 and it's in a box right now. Still running my 2 ATV2 (pre 5.1)

Submitted by davidb.1496 on March 30, 2012 - 2:44pm

Agreed

Submitted by Anon on March 30, 2012 - 2:44pm

So basically if I upgrade to 5.0 I cannot use xbmc. Agreed guys xbmc is the beast so without that its worthless. Do let us know once xbmc is updated to work with 5.0

Submitted by Anon on March 30, 2012 - 2:45pm

Wow I usually don't post comments. Just read. But man do a lot of people complain! Good job Firecore! Love what you guys do for my appletv.

Submitted by Anon on March 30, 2012 - 2:45pm

If you experience a actual 'power outage' or unplug the ATV for the outlet a 'tethered' jailbreak with have to be reinstalled.

Submitted by Anon on March 30, 2012 - 2:45pm

Or hook ur AppleTV to a UPS...I'd imagine the power drawn from a sleeping AppleTV would be fairly small.

Submitted by Anon on March 30, 2012 - 2:45pm

I have always been afraid of a tethered jailbreak. But after installing it for the first time on my ATV 2, I'm very happy. You only have to make a tethered boot if you turn your apple tv off. You can put it to sleep and it will come back on normally, without any tethering. I have made my tethered jailbreak for 3 months. And since then, I never had to connect my Apple TV to a computer again. It goes to sleep and comes back alone! I really recommend this.

Submitted by ben4 on March 30, 2012 - 2:45pm

Seriously high expectations of the posters here. Apologies to the FireCore staff who must be fuming over these sorts of rants.

Tethered or untethered, keep up the good work and posts. The status updates help your customers know how things are going, even if the features aren't exactly where we all want them to be. We know you're going in the right direction and look forward to each update.

Cheers!

Submitted by Anon on March 30, 2012 - 2:48pm

Agreed. Keep up the good work! If it wasn't for you brilliant guys where would we be today?!?

Submitted by Anon on March 30, 2012 - 2:49pm

Good job FC but get that untethered jailbreak out of the gates and I'm all smiles. Personally, I find tethered jailbreaks like trying to fix a tyre with pack of gum...

Submitted by Anon on March 30, 2012 - 2:50pm

There are some really ungrateful people out there!

I'll be waiting for a untethered jailbreak too, as its just easier and gives time for the others (like Plex) time to catch up, but great work guys!

My ATV2 wouldnt get used if it wasn't for Firecore and to have an update to 5.0 within month of its release is pretty damn good in my eyes.

Keep it up and ignore the moaning b@stards Wink

Submitted by Quinn on March 30, 2012 - 2:50pm

Yes, it means any time you shut down or re-boot the device it needs to be connected to an apple OS. So windoze users are out of luck here.

But, You can configure the Harmony One software to leave devices on or off when changing inputs... I leave my aTV, aTV 2 & aTV 3 and DirecTV receiver on all the time. Changing inputs through the av receiver to various inputs works fine. I will wait for an untethered SeasOnPass though and hope XBMC Eden 11.0 is done for the aTV Flash release...

Submitted by cecemf on March 30, 2012 - 2:50pm

Can I use season pass to go back to 4.4.4 or below ? I did update too 5.0 by mistake Frown

Submitted by Anon on March 30, 2012 - 2:54pm

As long as it stays plugged in, it'll work fine. You don't have to plug the appletv into the pc anymore unless you unplug the power cord.

Submitted by leezy.1968 on March 30, 2012 - 2:54pm

tethered isnt good at this point as i think all the atv2 have been pulled from sales, so it only leaves the atv3's so this is kinda worthless as people with atv2 would of been on 4.4.4 and jailbroke them already, and if there are any atv2's out there on 5.0 then it can not be many..

what should of come was the jailbreak for the atv3.......

Submitted by james95121 on March 30, 2012 - 2:55pm

Why are people pissed off at firecore. They dont actually create the jailbreaks for iOS, so they have to wait for the other hackers (pod2g, musclenerd, etc) to release an untether jailbreak for all iOS. Then they incorporate that into their package. Thats how they have always done and right now are the only ones doind this, so give them a break. For the apple tv 3 jailbreka, if you read nitoTV blog he said is going to take some time for that jailbreka to happen

Submitted by cecemf on March 30, 2012 - 3:00pm

I went for it and it worked !!! YAYYY I'm back on 4.4.4 !! !thank you guy's !!!

Submitted by pteronaut on March 30, 2012 - 3:01pm

Why would you expect a company to sells software to notify you when a free competitor is available? Tongue

Get yourself down to forum.xbmc.org, follow XBMC on twitter or 'like' XBMC on Facebook to hear when XBMC is ATV2 iOS 5.1 compatible.

The latest release of Apple TV Software is 5.0, The operating system that it runs on is 5.1 (Just like the current iOS for the iPhone, iPod Touch & iPad

XBMC is compatible with iOS 5.0. And is not dependent on the ATV software, but the operating system. Wink

Congrats! It's a big step.
You worked your ass very hard to provide this, no one should complain.
