We are pleased to announce the release aTV Flash (black) 2.0 for the 2nd generation Apple TV. Version 2.0 goes beyond just watching videos, and adds in a ton of new features that make browsing and watching media on the Apple TV more enjoyable than ever.

2.0 is a free update for all current aTV Flash (black) users, so keep reading for more details on everything that's new.

Browse by category

The new Library View will now index all your media (even if stored on multiple devices) and automatically organize movies, TV shows and music into easy to use categories such as: genre, release date, star rating, age rating and others. TV shows will also be group by series/season automatically so there's no more worrying about keeping your folders perfectly organized.

While we think this is a great new way to browse and enjoy your media, the original file/folder based browsing will remain intact and working as an alternative option.

Fully integrated search

Sometimes you know what you want to watch, and don't want to browse. With our new integrated search you can do just that. This powerful search tool allows you to search by movie, TV series/episode, song, artist, album or filename. Just start typing and the results will start being displayed instantly.

Keep it all in sync

Also new for 2.0 is trakt.tv syncing. This is a great feature if you're trying to keep multiple Apple TVs in sync, as if you watch a movie on the first device it will also appear as watched on the 2nd. Additionally, if you manually mark a movie or show as watched on trakt.tv, it will automatically get marked as watched on the Apple TV. In a similar fashion, Last.fm scrobbling allows you track music plays in your Last.fm profile.

Full changelog

  • Added all-new Library View
  • Added integrated media search
  • Added trakt.tv 2-way syncing
  • Added Last.fm scrobbling
  • Added genre/artist based playlists
  • Added Recently Added display option
  • Improved handling of WTV files

Does this work on the 3rd gen Apple TV?

Not yet. Work is still ongoing and we'll be sure to announce any and all news as soon as it becomes available. Be sure to follow us on Twitter, Facebook and Google+ for up to the minute info.

Outstanding! Where can I get it?

I don't want to spoil the party mood, but the library function is a joke. I have approx 25 TV shows and maybe 150 movies on my Nas. The Movies lists (in almost random order) about half of the movies, most of the TV shows (mixed with the movies, lacking Meta data). The TV shows category is empty. The Other category contains all the remaining movies and shows. I think that I will stay with the old way of presenting shared folders.

guys, how did you make Media the first icon on your aTV home screen? If I can't move it to the first row, the recently added option for the media shelf is kind of useless.

Thanks for the great work!

I have noticed that "Trailers" is no longer available. Not running IOS5 on this ATV2 because I wanted to keep the weather on the home screen. However, "Trailers" seems to have vanished a few weeks ago under the Movies category and I was wondering if anyone else had reported something similar.

Our ATV2 in the bedroom with the latest IOS works fine, trailers and all. Any chance of getting the weather back on the home screen like the previous version had? REALLY REALLY enjoy that feature!

I, too, would greatly appreciate an update with regard to the ATV (rev 3). I purchased the pre-release software with a lifetime of updates to show my support because I was waiting for the refresh to purchase a new Apple TV. I did and only then did I see new of it being incompatible. As the months roll by...I am increasingly disappointed.

Submitted by Anon on September 11, 2012 - 2:39pm

Apple moved trailers to its own folder.

So why don't you go ahead just create it if you think it's that easy. Let them do their work. Like Apple, they will release it when it's ready.

Hi, my Macbook with Mountain Lion does not recognize my apple TV to Airplay mirroring. is this happens due to the jailbreak? Thanks in adavance

Submitted by gr37 on September 11, 2012 - 2:52pm

Thanks for the link. I have no desire to SSH though, so I'd say this will really become a feature once we have this running on iOS 6 (which, presumably will let us move the icons from the home screen).

Guys... I now own one AppleTV2 and 3 AppleTV3. I LOVE aTVFlash. I think it is the best program I've seen for media for quite some time. I used to use XBMC on both PC and ATV and it is just too loaded to the point it is not easy enough to use, too slow, and certainly not integrated with the Apple UI as aTVFlash it. Well done!
I too am awaiting aTVFlash to work on ATV3, very much!
BUT... if you want to watch movies from your NAS, you can still do that (assuming you have an iPhone, iPod or iPad) with the server (on one of your PCs) and an App called AirVideo. All you do is stream the video from your NAS on your iDevice and then hit the AirPlay option to stream it to your ATV. Voila... you are watching your own NAS video on your unbroken AppleTV3...
I find it very useful and someone a remedy to the fact that I can't, yet, use aTVFlash on ATV3.
Hope this helps.

For my money what we need from Firecore is first a stable product. I have had numerous issues with random reboots and out of memory errors. Their answer has been to reinstall from the start and not install any of the 3rd party software they bundle with the product. First there are no options during the install to pick and choose what is installed. Second if the 3rd party software has issues, why are they bundling it with their software?

Once all these issues are fixed I think support for NAS Drives is a plus it works, how about Bluetooth support as part of their package? How about a Torrent Client with folder support to down directly to your drive of choice.

But above all, it needs to be stable, it really makes me upset to have the damn thing go blank or throw a memory error right in the middle of a movie.

Thank your for the update.

It seems I succesfuly updated to 2.0 (says so in the about txt) but I'm stuck with the old ATV home look. No icons grid like in your screenshots. How's that?

Which Apple TV version are you running? Mountain Lion will require the latest 5.0.2 version in order for mirroring to work.

Submitted by james on September 11, 2012 - 3:20pm

Media can be moved up by simply hiding one of the normal top row items through the Settings > General > Parental Controls menu.

You may check to ensure your TV Shows folder(s) are marked as TV Shows.

In your case, you will want to make sure the 'TV' folder is marked as TV Shows.

The menu layout will be determined by the Apple TV SW version you are running (5.0 and later will be the new icon based layout, while 4.4.4 and earlier will be the old horizontal layout).

To update the Apple TV software you can run the latest version of Seas0nPass.

Submitted by miket.1357 on September 11, 2012 - 3:28pm

Tried that... Holding the center button on My Files->Remote->TV just emits a beep no content menu...

Anyone having issues with their ATV2 rebooting constantly since this last update?

Submitted by Anon on September 11, 2012 - 3:29pm

I had the same issue. It's because you need to update your ATV software to the newest available. aTV does not do that automatically

Submitted by Anon on September 11, 2012 - 3:36pm

Also only MacBooks from the last year will will work with airplay mirroring Smile

Submitted by Anon on September 11, 2012 - 3:36pm

While Plex is great on the surface, looks good and uses metadata extensively, I think one of the downsides compared to the more basic Mediaplayer is that you can't move fastforward with picture. I don't get why Plex does not have this function...I think it's very useful...
Keep up the good work FireCore!
Pleez get your shit together for gen 3 asap!

I am planning for when the ATV 3 version is available, and starting to get all my movies and music to a network share.

With the FireCore flash products, do I need a separate media center application to house all my movies and music? If so, which have been found to be the best to use?

I have a windows 7 pc that will be the 'server' that the network share will be housed on.

i've made a favorit folder for both my movies and tv shows. The movie folder i a-ok but in tv shows there is no meta data, just the "grid" view. Then if i go through my Library and in to the "tv show" its all working fine but half the shows are missing?

Submitted by tomyt3 on September 11, 2012 - 4:39pm

All the watched movies and tv shows i already had on my atv should now be marked as watched in trakt.tv as well? Or i must mark as watched one by one on my atv to keep the same watched stuff on atv and trakt.tv..

Submitted by kyteflyer on September 11, 2012 - 5:24pm

I'm wondering about the scan process... In the midst of a scan/metadata fetch right now, and it seems to be dumping movies and tv in together.  Will everthing get sorted once the metadata is in place?  I've noticed that for some things, the metadata doesnt actually work... perhaps a naming thing for the file, I dont know... but sometimes all I get is a still from the movie or tv show... would this have an adverse effect on how its presented in the menus?

With all these listed problems here, guess it is best to wait until they are fixed before buying this product.

Wow! What did you do with AFP?!?! I can fast-forward waaaay quicker now, it's so much more responsive! Rewinding doesn't need nearly as much time for buffering any longer.

Good job!

Submitted by james on September 11, 2012 - 6:36pm

Were you running the latest Apple TV software or an older version?

As stated above, 2.0 requires Apple TV 4.4 or later. If you're running a version older than this no updates will appear in the Maintenance menu, but it's still possible to install 2.0 by re-running the installer from a Mac or PC. Doing this is not advised as it can lead to unpredictable results.

Submitted by davidb.1496 on September 11, 2012 - 6:36pm

Aha. I found it would only reboot when the ethernet was plugged in (no WiFi setup). As soon as I plugged in the ethernet cable - it would start endlessly rebooting. This started after I updated Media Player, Weather and Plex.

Decided to RE-jailbreak my ATV2. After the re-jailbreak - everything seems to be working fine now! Woo Hoo!

After that - I updated my other ATV2. It didn't have any problems (didn't need to re-jailbreak that one).

Does XMBC work in this version of ATV Flash with 5.0.2?

Submitted by Anon on September 11, 2012 - 7:39pm

I actually got higher speed and less stuttering using wireless streaming on th ATV2, due to that the physical LAN interface sadly enough is only 100 Mbit. I therefore have a wireless Gb router right next to the ATV2, with WPA2 AES encryption, straming at approximately 300 Mbit.

With trakt.tv, does this track what I watch from the across all of the atv, for example media, iTunes, xbmc? Or is it only what is watched in Media player?

Nice work guys!  You nailed it... the library feature is a HUGE usability enhancement.  Well done.  I appreciate all the hard work that went into this update.  I had no issue with the update - made sure my ATV2 level was current before updating (which it was).  Keep up the great work... and I can't wait for the ATV3 release of aTV Flash.

However i can't get mediaplayer installed on my Apple TV2.

Was the Apple TV jailbroken with Seas0nPass, or something else?

Always great job with Firecore dev. team! Kudos to you all!

Problem #1

Once installed(upgraded) atv flash black 2.0, then the purchased iTunes media(movies & TV shows) doesn't play by atv flash media player, unlike the previous version of 1.7 (even with 1.9 Beta it works).
(Though I can play the purchased items through aTV original menu or apple computer home sharing menu(COMPUTER).
What's wrong with it?

Problem #2

In regard to atv flash maintenance backup menu, I can backup in "Normal" way, but couldn't in "Full" backup optoin. The full backup process aborts and just relaunched itself.

Hope help is in the way!

So I have my TV folder, which contains all of my TV shows, as a favourite and I have the Library view of all of my TV shows. The library view is beautiful will artwork, etc. but my library folder isn't. However, if I remove my TV folder as a favourite, it doesn't get processed into the library. So I either have both the TV folder and the TV Shows view in my favourites or I have just TV (which is ugly). Also, I don't want to process everything because the hard drive contains more files than I want on my AppleTV. And my TV folder is listed as containing TV content. Thoughts?

Submitted by Anon on September 11, 2012 - 10:04pm

I dont think that is the problem, because when I enter to my smb share folder i see the movies with their correct metadata! This problem is only happens with the movies!! I have a lot of duplicates films without having that movie at the library!!

Thanks for all! I hope we can find an anwser!!!

Great job!

I have something to ask you. Can I use backup data (I backed up aTV Flash in "normal" option) when I install seasOnpass and aTV Flash onto another aTV 2nd gen? If I can, is all my metadata including subtitles available?

Or is it same when I reinstalled seasOnpass and aTV Flash again?

Submitted by kyteflyer on September 11, 2012 - 11:01pm

AHA!!  I had not changed the file type when I moved the drive.  Thanks James, you're a champ Smile
