We are pleased to announce the release aTV Flash (black) 2.0 for the 2nd generation Apple TV. Version 2.0 goes beyond just watching videos, and adds in a ton of new features that make browsing and watching media on the Apple TV more enjoyable than ever.

2.0 is a free update for all current aTV Flash (black) users, so keep reading for more details on everything that's new.

Browse by category

The new Library View will now index all your media (even if stored on multiple devices) and automatically organize movies, TV shows and music into easy to use categories such as: genre, release date, star rating, age rating and others. TV shows will also be group by series/season automatically so there's no more worrying about keeping your folders perfectly organized.

While we think this is a great new way to browse and enjoy your media, the original file/folder based browsing will remain intact and working as an alternative option.

Fully integrated search

Sometimes you know what you want to watch, and don't want to browse. With our new integrated search you can do just that. This powerful search tool allows you to search by movie, TV series/episode, song, artist, album or filename. Just start typing and the results will start being displayed instantly.

Keep it all in sync

Also new for 2.0 is trakt.tv syncing. This is a great feature if you're trying to keep multiple Apple TVs in sync, as if you watch a movie on the first device it will also appear as watched on the 2nd. Additionally, if you manually mark a movie or show as watched on trakt.tv, it will automatically get marked as watched on the Apple TV. In a similar fashion, Last.fm scrobbling allows you track music plays in your Last.fm profile.

Full changelog

  • Added all-new Library View
  • Added integrated media search
  • Added trakt.tv 2-way syncing
  • Added Last.fm scrobbling
  • Added genre/artist based playlists
  • Added Recently Added display option
  • Improved handling of WTV files
  • Improved handling of DVD audio tracks
  • Improved AFP connections
  • Improved filename recognition

Does this work on the 3rd gen Apple TV?

Not yet. Work is still ongoing and we'll be sure to announce any and all news as soon as it becomes available. Be sure to follow us on Twitter, Facebook and Google+ for up to the minute info.

A Quote from a previous post:

So I have my TV folder, which contains all of my TV shows, as a favourite and I have the Library view of all of my TV shows. The library view is beautiful will artwork, etc. but my library folder isn't. However, if I remove my TV folder as a favourite, it doesn't get processed into the library. So I either have both the TV folder and the TV Shows view in my favourites or I have just TV (which is ugly). Also, I don't want to process everything because the hard drive contains more files than I want on my AppleTV. And my TV folder is listed as containing TV content. Thoughts?

I agree with superdifficult & am wondering the exact same thing. Any thoughts?

Submitted by Phixtit on September 13, 2012 - 12:30pm

James, I absolutely LOVE the new Library! B-) Quick question...

My current View in Media with the New Library TV Shows as favorite looks like this:

| Movies | TV Folder | TV Shows | My Files | Library | Search | Settings |

If I remove the (TV Folder) from Favorites, then (TV Shows) Favorite displays nothing.

So I'm stuck with 2 Favorites (TV Folder & TV Shows) for it to work properly.

Is there any way to keep (TV Folder) HIDDEN as a source to SHOW ONLY (TV Shows) as a Favorite?

Submitted by james on September 13, 2012 - 1:46pm

Yes, but you may need to perform a library rescan after removing the favorite.

If this isn't working for you please let us know.

Cool Stuff James and co. is making Smile

I have a problem.. I added the movie UP to my NAS. I Called the movie OP because thar is the name
Of the movie in Danish. Media player found a meta tag Called Sintel. I renamed the movie to UP on the nas, and Them the media found the correct cover and meta. But the sintel still apear on the media player.

What to do?

Submitted by Engberg on September 13, 2012 - 2:02pm

I agree Smile bambi is also under sci-fi Smile

Submitted by james on September 13, 2012 - 2:03pm

A library re-scan should clear this up.

I Tried but i do not Work Frown

We're currently using TheMovieDB's tags for genres. For the most part these are pretty good, but not quite perfect.

The good news is TheMovieDB is a user populated site, so if you see something that's obviously out of place (E.G. Bambi is not Star Wars) you can jump on their site and improve the metadata for all.

I have a folder on my NAS Called Video.

Inside the Video folder I have 2 folders Called: Movies, and Television.

I Add both of those folders as Favorites.

When I remove Television as a Favorite it doesn't show up in Library to rescan & the Library TV Shows says: "There are no items to playback

If I Add Television as a Favorite it shows up in Library to scan & I can Add TV Shows as Favorite it will work, but then I have 2 Favorites: Television & TV Shows & it looks cluttered.

Any thoughts?

On the "Media 101 - Basic Setup"
Step 2: Select the share(s) you wish to be included in the Library.

Note: To add a specific folder to the Library (instead of an entire share) you can setup a new share using the direct path to a folder by entering the folder path after the device name. E.G. MyNas.local\Files\Movies

But how can I enter the folder path ? Only the entire share (Root folder of NAS disk) can be selected.
Basically I would like to add only specific sub folders to the Library not the whole disk.

Submitted by Anon on September 14, 2012 - 8:01am

your must enter "/" instead of "\"

Submitted by Engberg on September 14, 2012 - 12:12pm

I have changed bambi but it is still under sci fi on Apple tv ?

Submitted by james on September 14, 2012 - 3:15pm

TheMovieDB has a cache in place, so changes made on the website will not immediately be made available to applications such as aTV Flash (black).

I can't say exactly how often this cache is refreshed, but you may try reloading metadata (http://support.firecore.com/entries/20557283) for that file in a day or two.

Thanks, James.  Yes, same naming format.

I just don't understand it.  I've tried renaming the shows to something else but that doesnt work either.  The oddity is that all the shows which are missing in the Library are visible in both the Media folders and in Plex.  its just "Library" which can't see them.  If it helps, all three are Star Trek shows, and have been ripped from my own DVDs, as have the other two Star Trek shows.  So Star Trek Enterprise and Star Trek Voyager are visible everywhere, but Star Trek Original Series, Star Trek Next Generation and Star Trek Deep Space Nine cannot be seen (so I use media player to watch those).  Maybe I need to play with the names.  Star Trek TOS?  Star Trek TNG?  Star Trek DS9 doesnt work, but maybe Star Trek Deep Space 9 will.

I'll keep playing, perhaps something will present itself.  If I cant work it out, I'll open a support ticket.  Just good to know its not an inherent limitation (eg Library cant see more than 20 shows, for example)

Submitted by kingdomservant on September 15, 2012 - 12:52am

Hmm. I tried this.

But after scanning, the TV Shows option under Library still shows "there are no items to playback" even though the TV Shows folder's content under Favorites is set to 'TV Shows' and displays over 100 of them.

Since the Library is not working, now when I go to the Favorite that I called 'TV Shows', I have to navigate down to the actual folder (since the Favorite is now one folder higher than it used to be. So I'm misunderstanding something or it's not working for me (I'm running 4.4.4 on my ATV2).

One more annoyance -- I've scanned metadata several times, but the season/episode assignment for the TV series seems to be randomly selected.  IOW, it might tell me that the first show is season 4 episode 27 (when I know its season 22 episode xx). Most of the other shows of the same series will also be s4 e27, but I found one that claimed to be e57 and another that claimed to be e0 (!).

James, any ideas, or should I submit a ticket?

I can see the value of the Library, but so far I've been frustrated trying to reach that goal.

I have a dumb question.

After install under maintenance it says version: 1.7 - 0949 SHouldn't it say 2.0?

Submitted by Anon on September 17, 2012 - 2:26am

I couldn't agree with Phixtit more; I have same problem.
I hope Firecore will add the function to hide unnecessary TV Shows as another Favorite.

Submitted by kyteflyer on September 17, 2012 - 9:12pm

Hate to tell you but it still is tagged with Science Fiction.  So unless the change didnt stick there is some idiot going and changing it back.  Crowd sourced info is great, but not in circiumstances like this.

First of all thanks for this amazing update.
I have been struggling with a couple of movies though. They keep ending up in the "other" category.

Mostly movies that include quotes (') like Boundin' (Pixar short movie)

Also is there a way of viewing music by album? I can't seem to find it.

Submitted by carll.7184 on September 18, 2012 - 1:43pm

I have tried but I think I have failed to upgrade to 2.0.

I bought my Apple TV in the beginning of January 2012. The Apple TV-software is 4.4.4 (3300) accordning to the "about" page. The "about" under Maintenance says I am running aTV Flash (black) 2.0. There is no problem with running the Apple TV, everything is in order. The problem is that I'm still seeing the old interface (not this interface: http://www.apple.com/appletv/).

Do any of you have any suggestions on what to do?

Thank you very much

Submitted by ldoubrava on September 18, 2012 - 3:52pm

You need to update your atv2 to the latest firmware. Best bet is to download the latest seas0npass and let it work it's magic. Then reinstall atv flash and your good to go with the new interface.

There a issue with hdd connected to airport extreme in this version. The hdd is disconected many times. Any solution?

Submitted by Anon on September 18, 2012 - 4:26pm

Hi guys. Hope you can help with a duplication problem.

I'd like to share a few movies from my Windows 7 laptop which after a bit of faffing I have managed to set up:
Name: the ip address of the laptop
Server: the name of the laptop
Username/password: disabled

All fine, except that the metadata collected has duplicated all the entries. Instead of 12 movies, I have 24. How do I fix this one? Any ideas?

Submitted by kterrio on September 18, 2012 - 10:56pm

Hi, I just uploaded by MAc to a MAc Book Pro with Retina display (basically the pricest MAc Book They sell).  On my apple Tv, under the media, it still shows my old mac.  Can you give me some idea of how to go about switching everything to my new Mac Book Pro Retina? I've been watching things with the "airplay" feature, but it locks up literally every 20 seconds and makes it basically not worth watching it on my normal TV.  Any help greatly appreciated.

Since the 2.0 update, My Atv no longer remembers where I left off in a video... Upon returning to the menu, the blue semi-circle changes back to full. Anyone else with this issue?

Submitted by Anon on September 20, 2012 - 6:31am

I agree with this issue. It is very frustrating when metadata replaces the file name for tv shows. I prefer the list view for tv shows and my list seem much easier to find the show I want to watch by browsing through file names. Can this be fixed with a setting in Media Player ASAP?

Submitted by bechodek on September 20, 2012 - 4:30pm

Is there a way to downgrade from 2.0 to the previous version? Since the update, I can't stream content from Netflix, Hulu, iTunes Festival... and none of my shows are being marked as watched.

Submitted by Anon on September 22, 2012 - 2:25pm

Actually, I'm really enjoying the Plex integration. It's the best performance I've seen yet on a set-top box of any kind.

Error while installing MEDIA PLAYER

Com.firecore.media: Depends: com.firecore.libafpclient (>= 1.3-65) but it is not going to be installed.

That's the error from the log.
Can I install the dependency manually thru terminal?

Thanks, James & Firecore dev team!
After updates of media player, the DRM iTunes files play sleek as before.
Great job!
Hope DRM iTunes TV series files appear on the TV library column of media player as well.

Apple has updated the firmware today. Can I do this update without losing my jailbreak and ATV Flash ?

Submitted by Anon on September 24, 2012 - 7:06pm

Today Apple upgrade the firmware. If I have not yet upgrade to the latest firmware, and if I've found a downloadable copy of 5.0.2 firmware, will I be able to jailbreak with SeasOnPass? Will I be able to point the program to location of the firmware or will it just automatically download the latest? Thanks

Submitted by Anon on September 24, 2012 - 9:14pm

I updated 2 of my AppleTv's Gen2 and they are fine. You need to Restore them so that it will reset everything and they can be updated (either in the menus "Update Software" or pluging it into your computer and running a "Restore"). After that you run the SeasonPass and, finally, the aTV Flash 2.0.

It all work fine and (re)jailbreaks the AppleTv.

Option-click on the Create IPSW button and dialog box allows you to choose whichever local firmware file to use.

Can I still jailbreak my aTV using seas0npass? (untethered)

Submitted by Anon on September 26, 2012 - 2:17pm

Is someone having trouble with média player??

With this new version, when I watch a movie, sometimes I got a "load memory" which stutter the movie.
But it's not one time, but every 30 seconds for some movies...

Furthermore, in a few movies I don't have any sound while the video is running.
In the previous version, I haven't this problem.

Can I get back to an older version or have you a solution?

Submitted by mendocinotim on September 27, 2012 - 12:22pm

I just bought a new ATV Black 3.

Do you expect to release a compatible Seas0nPass & ATVFlash anytime in the next month or two - or do you expect this to take longer?
Because, until you do, I have to keep the new ATV in its box, and am still using the 1st Gen.

I wanted to give my kid the older unit for his birthday (that was a a week ago) - and he's anxiously waiting on me, and I'm waiting on you.

Obviously, we're all dying for the update. Of course.
I'm sure you're hard at work on this, but if you have some idea for how much longer this might take, well.., it would be nice to have some idea on this.

Please advise.
