Apple TV (ATV2) 5.0 Update

Today we're happy to release new versions of Seas0nPass and aTV Flash (black) that are compatible with latest 5.0 (iOS 5.1) software running on the ATV2. A ton of work has gone into getting everything updated, and a huge thanks go out to Brandon Holland (@640774n6) and Dustin Howett (@DHowett) who both contributed immensely in adding support for 5.0.

Is this a tethered or untethered jailbreak? What's the difference?

Seas0nPass currently provides a tethered jailbreak for the new 5.0 (iOS 5.1) Apple TV software. Functionally, both jailbreak types are identical, the only difference being that a tethered jailbreak requires the Apple TV to be connected to a Mac/PC when first powering it on. Since the Apple TV doesn't have a battery, and is rarely ever powered off, this usually only needs to be done once.

What's new in the 5.0 Apple TV software? Should I update?

  • New interface: - Fast, visual access to all content choices
  • Movie purchases in iCloud: Support for buying movies on Apple TV and playing back purchased movies from iCloud
  • Genius Recommendations: Recommendations for content on the iTunes Store based on previous rentals and purchases
  • Screensaver photos: New National Geographic photos built-in for screensaver
  • On-device sign-up: On-device sign up for content partners on Apple TV using your Apple ID

Updating to the new 5.0 software is not required, and all aTV Flash (black) features will continue to be supported on Apple TV versions 4.2 and later.

What about the ATV3, will this work?

Unfortunately not. Work is still ongoing for the ATV3, and we hope to have more news soon. For the latest updates be sure to follow us on Twitter.

Which plugins are currently supported on 5.0?

  • Couch Surfer (works)
  • Last.fm (works)
  • Maintenance (works)
  • Media Player (works)
  • NitoTV (works)
  • Plex (works)
  • Remote HD (works)
  • Rowmote (works)
  • RSS Feeds (works)
  • Weather (works)
  • XBMC (works)
  • Overflow (not working)

Note: Non-working items require an author update for 5.0 compatibility.

Seas0nPass Updated for AppleTV 4.4

Seas0nPass has been updated to support a TETHERED jailbreak of the new AppleTV 4.4 (iOS 5) software released on 10/12 (also supported are the new minor updates - 4.4.1 released on 10/17, 4.4.2 released on 10/24, 4.4.3 released on 11/17, and 4.4.4 released on 12/16). Full details on what's new in 4.4, status of 3rd party features, and how to update are below.

Should I update?

Currently the jailbreak for 4.4+ is tethered, which is a bit less convenient than an untethered version. If the features added in 4.4 excite you it may be worth updating; however, the previous 4.3 version will continue to be supported so updating is not required.

The full list of changes included in 4.4 can be found below:

  • AirPlay Mirroring: Now with video mirroring – wirelessly stream what’s on your iPad 2 screen to your HDTV.
  • Photo Stream: View photos recently taken on your iOS device and pushed to your Photo Stream in iCloud.
  • Trailers: A whole new way to browse and view hundreds of the latest theatrical trailers.
  • National Hockey League: Watch live games. View highlights, scores, and more.
  • Wall Street Journal Live: Watch up-to-date news, business commentary, and financial analysis from leading experts.

Apple has also added support for subtitles in Netflix and three new slideshow themes: Photo Wall, Flip-up, and Shifting Tiles.

Which plugins are supported on 4.4?

  • Couch Surfer (works)
  • Last.fm (works)
  • Media Player (works)
  • NitoTV (works)
  • Overflow (works)
  • Remote HD (works)
  • Rowmote (works)
  • RSS Feeds (works)
  • Weather (works)
  • XBMC (nightly builds only)
  • Plex (not working)

How do I update?

Seas0nPass will default to the latest untethered version, which is currently 4.3. If you want to use Seas0nPass to update and jailbreak a newer version simply follow the steps below.

  1. Download version 4.4.4 (9A406a) and save the IPSW in an easy to find location.
  2. Download the latest version of Seas0nPass.
  3. Open Seas0nPass and Option + click (Mac) or Shift + click (PC) the Create IPSW button and select the new IPSW file that was downloaded in step #1.
  4. Seas0nPass will complete the jailbreak and restore process automatically.
  5. After the restore is complete, move the AppleTV to your TV and follow the steps for performing a Tethered Boot.

A demo video that outlines the tethered jailbreak process can be found here.

Enjoy. Smile

Update: It seems Apple has taken down the 4.4.1 AppleTV update due a number of reported issues. For now 4.4 is the recommended version for those wishing to update.

Update 2: The 4.4.1 version has been re-released.

Update 3: Seas0nPass has been updated to support AppleTV 4.4.2 - released on 10/24.

Update 4: Seas0nPass has been updated to support AppleTV 4.4.3 - released on 11/17.

Update 5: Seas0nPass has been updated to support AppleTV 4.4.4 - released on 12/15.

Seas0nPass for Windows + Progress Update

As the snow starts to melt here in Denver, we're starting to see many of the exciting features that have been under such heavy development over the past few months begin to mature and blossom. Read on for more details on the current state of aTV Flash (black) and what's coming next.

Seas0nPass for Windows

We're happy to announce the public release of Seas0nPass for Windows. Like the Mac version, Seas0nPass is a helpful tool that allows you to jailbreak your AppleTV with the latest firmware, and easily go through the 'tethered boot' process if needed.

Seas0nPass for Windows is free and open source. The Seas0nPass application and user guides can be found at Seas0nPass.com. The source code will be available shortly on Github.

New 4.2 (iOS 4.3) update

As mentioned in the previous blog post Apple released a new 4.2 (iOS 4.3) software update for the AppleTV last Wednesday (3/9). While Seas0nPass and aTV Flash (black) are compatible with this new version, some 3rd party plugins such as XBMC and Plex are not fully working yet. If you rely on either of these plugins we recommend sticking with your current version until compatible updates are available.

If you haven't done so already, the AppleTV auto-update feature can be disabled through the Maintenance --> Settings menu.

Additional codecs and NAS streaming

Below is a new preview of our video player in action. In the demo a full DVD (VIDEO_TS) movie is being streamed from a remote AFP based NAS drive over wifi. Playback is handled entirely on the AppleTV, and requires no server-side transcoding. Full 5.1 sound is also supported.

While this feature has taken a bit longer to complete than originally anticipated we plan to have a preview 'alpha' version (with support for a limited number of file types) available next week. It's taken a lot of work to get this far and we sincerely appreciate your patience.

Seas0nPass Updated for iOS 4.3

Seas0nPass has been updated to support a tethered jailbreak of the new AppleTV 4.2 (iOS 4.3) software. Big thanks to @nitoTV, @DjayB6, @p0sixninja and @msft_guy for help getting everything together.

What's new in AppleTV 4.2? Should I update?

- AirPlay for apps and websites
- MLB.TV & NBA Game Time live streaming
- Netflix Dolby Digital 5.1
- Other minor improvements and fixes

If you choose to update to the new version you will lose your current jailbreak and aTV Flash (black) plugins.

If the above features don't excite you the auto-update feature can be disabled through the Maintenance --> Settings menu.

Is aTV Flash (black) Beta3 compatible?

For the most part yes. However, you may see a few oddities with text entry screens in plugins like Couch Surfer and nitoTV. These are relatively minor issues and should be a quick fix.

Update 3/11: New 4.3 compatible versions of Couch Surfer and Last.fm are now available.

Additionally there are some hardware decoding issues present in XBMC which will take a bit more work to get right.

The updated version, and user guides can be found at Seas0nPass.com

Seas0nPass Cuts the Cord

Today we're happy to release an updated version of Seas0nPass (for Mac) that includes an untethered jailbreak for the AppleTV 4.1.1 (iOS 4.2.1) software. All credit for the untethered jailbreak process goes to the Chronic Dev Team.

Seas0nPass for Windows is also being finalized with the untether and will be available soon.

The latest Beta3 version of aTV Flash (black) is compatible with Seas0nPass, GreenPois0n and Pwnage Tool jailbreaks.

Note: If you've already jailbroken with GreenPois0n (RC 6.1) you do not need to re-jailbreak - both Seas0nPass and GreenPois0n contain the same jailbreak components.

Seas0nPass for Windows & Beta3

They say ‘no news is good news’ but the truth is ‘no news’ is torture, so it’s time for a progress update.

Seas0nPass for Windows

The first beta version of Seas0nPass for Windows has gone out to those who signed up for the Seas0nPass beta earlier this week. Barring any major setbacks, or show-stopping bugs we’re hoping to have a public version available next week.

GreenPois0n and the untethered jailbreak

Contrary to some reports, the recently release RC5 version of the GreenPois0n jailbreak tool (from the Chronic Dev Team) does not yet support the AppleTV. Fortunately the latest word is that the upcoming RC6 version will include support for an untethered jailbreak of the AppleTV. Once this new version is released the untethered jailbreak will also be available in an updated version of Seas0nPass. Choice is always good. Smile

Big thanks to the guys at Chronic dev for all their hard work!

Update: GP RC6 is out. Go grab it here.

aTV Flash (black) Beta3

Even though progress updates have been a little light as of late, we’ve been very busy since the release of Beta2. While most of the features we’ve been working tirelessly to complete aren’t quite ready for public consumption, the list below outlines the improvements that have been made available since the release of Beta2.

General

  • Added one-click XBMC install
  • Added support for iOS 4.3
  • Improved installer to better handle iOS updates
  • Improved installer error handling
  • One-click diagnostic report submissions

Couch Surfer Pro

  • Added support for touch and double-click events
  • Improved web page rendering
  • Improved web history; filtered duplicates
  • Improved handling of video elements
  • Eliminated ‘flickering’ during page loads
  • Resolved issues with auto-completion
  • Minor UI improvements

Last.fm

  • Added support for Scrobbling 2.0
  • Minor UI improvements

aTV Flash (black) Beta3 is available today. You can update on the AppleTV through the Maintenance --> Manage Extras menu. Download links are aslo available in your account.

What’s next?

We still have a lot of exciting things slated for release later this month. The original goal of making the best software possible has not changed, and your continued patience and support during this process is sincerely appreciated.

I guarantee you will not be disappointed.

1/21 Progress Update

Happy Friday! Fridays are always a good time for progress updates so read on to see what we've been up to over the past few weeks.

Seas0nPass

We're working fervently to complete a Windows version of Seas0nPass. Assuming no unexpected issues come up this version will be available within the next 1-2 weeks in early February. Like its Mac based counterpart this will also be a freely available, open-source application.

XBMC

Thanks to some exceptional work from Scott Davilla and the XBMC Team a full version of XBMC is now available for the 2nd gen AppleTV. XBMC acts as a replacement for the AppleTV menus, though you can easily switch back and forth between XBMC and AppleTV whenever you please. With aTV Flash (black) installed, XBMC can be easily downloaded through the Maintenance --> Manage Extras menu.

Streaming internet video

Over the past few weeks we've spent a bit of time working towards enabling Adobe Flash and determining how usable it would be. Ultimately we did get it working (big thanks to Comex) however the end result was far less than ideal. Videos would load ok, but playback was limited to 1-3 frames per-second which by any standard is pretty awful.

Instead of pursuing Adobe Flash any further we've decided to work towards optimizing HTML5 streaming video, which many popular sites are already using. HTML5 streaming via Couch Surfer has been improved greatly in recent weeks, and we're working towards making it even better.

Additional codecs and NAS streaming

We're getting closer and closer to making native NAS streaming and video playback a reality. As of today the plan is to make the initial beta version of this feature available within the next 1-2 weeks in early February. Additional features such as cover art, metadata fetching, and full hardware video decoding will be available shortly thereafter.

A few new screenshots are below.

Comments, thoughts and suggestions are welcome below.

'Seas0nPass' Jailbreak App Now Available

Today we're proud to introduce 'Seas0nPass' - a new jailbreak tool designed specifically for the AppleTV.

Seas0nPass was created exclusively for the AppleTV user, as previously no AppleTV specific jailbreak tools were available. Seas0nPass allows you to easily create custom AppleTV IPSW files and restore them in iTunes (similar to the existing Pwnage Tool app). Also included is a simple 'tethered boot' option which aids in using newer AppleTV firmwares when an 'un-tethered' jailbreak is not yet available.

Seas0nPass is available for free, and is open source. The source code is available on Github.

What can I do with Seas0nPass?

  • Jailbreak the AppleTV with the latest 4.1.1 (iOS 4.2.1) software.
  • Easily perform a 'tethered boot' (when necessary).

What is the difference between a 'tethered' and 'un-tethered' jailbreak?

A tethered jailbreak requires the AppleTV to be connected to a computer for a brief moment during startup. An un-tethered jailbreak removes this restriction. Un-tethered jailbreaks are are a bit more complex and take more time to complete.

How much does Seas0nPass cost?

Seas0nPass is available as a free download - no strings attached.

What are the minimum requirements?

Mac: OSX 10.6 or later

Windows: coming soon

Can I use this on my iPhone, iPad, or other iOS device?

Nope. Seas0nPass is designed exclusively for the 2nd gen AppleTV.

Sounds great! Where can I download it?

The Seas0nPass app, and user guides can be found at Seas0nPass.com
