Not perfect but a whole lot better. I probably credit the biggest improvements though to fixes in xbmc in general. The whole system was terribly slow for me in the last few svns, but not anymore.
I really hope that they push out 9.12 or whatever stable version will contain crystal support soon. Not a big fan of bleeding edge builds but this is good enough to endure some bugs.

Then, I still come back Wink

My XBMC still refuse to show me the "Crystal HD card" option in the rendering video mode option.

Even if this option is still in a testing mode, is someone here have got an idea to test the Crystal HD card in term of harware thru another way : thru Nito TV ? Thru the Apple TV OS ? Thru a SSh command line ?

Thanks 4 Ur help.

Here you go: http://www.logicsupply.com/products/bcm970012

But you can find it for around half the price on ebay if you search there.

Yinzhe it seems as though you're the only one having that issue. With 3 pages of issues on this thread I would suggest trying out another card, it would be less time than messing with this one anymore. good luck!

Really dumb question I'm hoping someone can answer..is the Crystal HD card necessary for older Apple TVs, or for ALL Apple TVs? I just bought one in January (and supposedly it can render 1080), but have been unable to get high res video to run in XBMC/Boxee. It crashes every time and before I purchase a card, I wanted to be sure that I actually needed one. Everything I can find online is from 2008 and early 2009 and mostly people talking about upgrading old units.

I don't have an issue with hacking the machine, but I did want to be sure I understood correctly that its necessary before going shopping. Thanks for indulging me.

The CPU on all AppleTVs is the Intel Pentium M 1.0 GHz "Crofton" Processor. This CPU is not powerful enough to decode most 720p and all 1080p H.264 video. Therefor it is needed for all AppleTVs.

XBMC follows the Ubuntu release cycles these days, so the next version will most likely be 10.04 or something. The reason for 9.11 was due to a delay in the release pending some issues they had.

Got my Crystal HD card Saturday, and popped it in Sunday.

Followed the guide here: http://forum.atvflash.com/viewtopic.php?f=19&t... with the addition of changing the rendering in XBMC to Crystal HD.
XBMC: svn r27758

My 720p videos that previously would not play now does, and they look just excellent.

My problem though is that later last night I watched a regular SD movie, and the video is now lagging. It did not used to be this way. And it is not just that movie, it is all the SD ones I tried with.

Tried rebooting due to the known memory leak, but to no avail.
http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?t=69850&h...

Anyone else seen this? Anyone know how to fix it, even temporarily?

Got home today and updated to SVN 27831. The "Broadcom Crystal HD" option under System --> Video --> Playback --> Render method disappeared.
Restarted the AppleTV, launched XBMC and changed the following settings under System --> Video --> Playback
a) --> Render Method. Changed "Auto" to "Broadcom Crystal HD".
b) --> Use Pixelbuffer Objects. Turn "on".
c) --> Adjust Display Refresh Rate to match Video. Turn "on".
d) --> SyncPlayback to Display. Turn "on".
e) --> A/V Sync Method: "Audio Clock"or "Drop Dupe" (Drop Dupe uses less CPU.)

Now the issue seems to be gone.

YinZhe, you might try this [url]http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?t=69321[/..., I had exactly the same problem, tried every single solution mentioned above and nothing. I was very close to purchasing a new card. Fortunatelly a simple copy paste (see first thread in the link) did the job.

Hi,
I don't seem able to get to step 3 in the guide. I am on latest version of ATV flash, have latest of XBMC and Nito. But for some reason, under Maintenance --> Install Extras, I do not get the option to install the Crystal drivers. Any pointers as to what I am doing wrong? Anyone else has had this problem?

Thanks!

MGA

ps: I have a working crystal card (I know it's working as I managed to get it running on a Linux installation on a different Apple TV).

EDIT: SORTED, I WAS RUNNING AN OLD VERSION OF APPLE TV. UPDATED TO LATEST VERSION AND THE OPTION TO INSTALL CRYSTAL HD IS THERE.

Question - All my files are ISO. STD DVD.Will this card help with SD playback? I realize ATV plays in 720P does that mean everything is 720P and if I get this card I can play anything in 1080? I apologize for what may seem to be stupid questions but if I dont ask I'll never learn anything..

Thanks in advance

The Crystal HD card (BCM970012) will decode mpeg2, h.264 and VC1 video content up to 1080p.

The Crystal HD card (BCM970015) will decode mpeg2, h.264, VC1 and MPEG-4 ASP (XviD/DivX) video content up to 1080p.

AppleTV applications run in 720p max at this point, might be fixed at some point.

But keep in mind that so far it is only XBMC that has support for the HW on the AppleTV.

What issues do you have? AppleTV should decode DVDs just fine without the Crystal HD card.

No issues- Runs great with ATVFLASH - just trying to determine if getting this card is worth the effort if I only use STD DVD isos. I assume I currently watch them at 720p. This would be worth the effort if I would be able to watch them at 1080p. However, this thread makes it sound like you need to have HD DVDs or Blu Ray files.

The CrystalHD card is not required for standard DVD files.

This is only required if you wish to play Blu-ray resolution files.

As said above, AppleTV applications run in 720p max at this point, but you can still output 1080p from AppleTV.

There are differences in:

1 Source resolution.
This will be whatever your source is, DVDs are below 480p in resolution.

2 Application resolution.
There is currently a bug in AppleTV that stops application from running in resolutions higher than 720p.

3 Resolution output.
The AppleTV can still output 1080p to your TV, even if the application is limited to 720p.

AppleTV will decode everything up to 720p low bitrate material without the Crystal HD card. For high bitrate 720p and 1080p material, you will need the crystal HD card to decode.

Please help, I had this all working until recently when I did a full restore and re-patch. Now I can't get the Broadcom card working correctly, it's not appearing in XBMC. The nitoInstall log has:

kextload: /System/Library/Extensions/BroadcomCrystalHD.kext/sbin/turbo_kext_enabler.bin: no such bundle file exists
can't add kernel extension /System/Library/Extensions/BroadcomCrystalHD.kext/sbin/turbo_kext_enabler.bin (file access/permissions) (run kextload on this kext with -t for diagnostic output)

Ok, did yet another restore, repatch to get this working. This time I uninstalled NitoTV first and reinstalled it. Then I followed the steps outlined on the first page of this thread and the check box now appears for CrystalHD. However, I can't play 720p like before. The same media in the same location seems to be suffering from a buffer related issue.

Does anyone know what version of the CrystalHD driver is being used? I am reading that there are problems with some cards and the latest drivers, people are reverting back to 1.03.
