I am attempting to get my Gladiator 4KUHD movie to work in Dolby Vision (vs HDR10).

I have used DVDFab to rip them to single layer. See below for media info at the bottom.

When I play this via infuse 6.2 w/ATV4K to a Sony A1E, I never see the Dolby Vision symbol (that might be expected with Sony's ?) and I see a picture but it will pixelate for many of the frames but I can see content in the other frames.

The HDR10 rip works fine.

AFAIK, Sony's don't show an input type logo when switching...so I think it's normal not to see anything after the switch. Some TVs like LG do show a logo for HDR and DV.

As a quick test, you might try playing one of the Dolby Vision samples from the link below to see if you get the DV logo on your Sony.

Infuse 6 for iOS and Apple TV is now available!

I tried the official Dolby Vision clips and they work fine and the Dolby Vision emblem comes up when starting them.

I tried forcing (vs match) and I get the same results with my Gladiator rip. In fact, it behaves the same way on my 1080p SDR setup.

Maybe I have a bad rip from a video perspective going from an ISO 4K UHD dual layer to a single layer MP4.

Since the rip didn't even work with VLC (same results), I determined that the rip must have been bad.

I used the Mac version of DVDFab (bad rip) and decided that I would try the windows version and did the rip from UHD ISO dual layer to single layer again.

I definitely have a good rip (compared to the previous one) with the windows version. this mp4 plays fine on VLC .

When I try it with infuse 6.2 and the apple tv 4k, it appears to be running at different frame rate than the film is shot and no Dolby Vision emblem comes up. I have dolby enabled and have frame rate and what ever else as matched.

When I force to Dolby Vision 4k at 24fps (match off, manual set) for the apple tv , the movie plays at least at the right speed and looks fine. Not sure how I can tell if Dolby Vision is "working" when I have it forced Dolby vision on for all content.

Maybe I will get the apple tv developer menu on to see what is going on.

The Developer HUD doesn't show any info when using Infuse player (must be a custom one).

When I have frame matching, dynamic range matching, infuse/apple tv doesn't seem to honor it. As far as I can tell, if I set it manually to Dolby Vision, 4K and 24 fps, it seems to be running correctly. The picture seems to be significantly more colorful and vibrant when I have it manual set correctly.

What can I do next ?

I’m going to say it’s a dvdfab rip issue. I’ve seen other people complain in other forums that dvdfab Dolby visions rips are hit and miss.

I don't know how to conclude whether it is a bad rip or not.

I can state that if I set this fixed to Dolby Vision and 24FPS, the Gladiator movie is substantially better than non HDR and appears to be better than HDR.
So, at least for the Gladiator movie, I can watch it in DV and I think it is working when I manual switch the primary setting which I normally have as 4K SDR.

To watch DV single layer for this movie:

Rip it from dual layer to single layer with DVDFab Windows version (10 - 01 -2019 version is what I used)
When you want to watch it, go to settings on the Apple TV (audio/video) and go and make sure you have DV enabled and change the primary viewing to DV 4K and 24FPS.
Then, change the apple tv setting back when you are done.

Now, I will see if I can mix/remux in the lossless audio track . Wish I could have an atmos track.

When I remuxed the DTSX audio track, I used FFmpeg and mp4box and found that there were some problems with the Video rip.

I believe that the video track doesn't have proper structure that tells the frame rate (for example) and probably DV.

While the video track works and I will have to test the new audio tracks, I have to force DV and 24fps for proper viewing.

Messages when I run FFmpeg -i "long filename.mp4"

I don’t believe mp4 with Dolby vision supports lossless HD audio. Does it work if you rip and remux with a regular DTS lossy track?

Correction. Use regular AC3 (or LPCM if using a Shield TV). This is supposed to be the limitation with single layer mp4. I’ve read DTS, ATMOS and TrueHD is a no go.

DTS 5.1 lossy tracked worked fine with my less than perfect DV video rip.

I did create a lossless DTX audio track and remuxed it. No additional errors doing that.

I am using the following link to have a DV Video track remuxed with a DTSX audio track. I have the file but I need to go home and listen to the track.

Here is the link that I am using https://forum.mrmc.tv/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=417...

I will update the thread on my testing.

I do see people state that mp4 container doesn't support DV and lossless audio but I will find out.

Your problem is you're trying to rip lossless audio into a single layer mp4 container.

I was able to get the DTSX track into the imperfect Gladiator mp4 and tested out the audio.

The mediainfo is at the bottom.

1) I noticed when I muxed in the DTSX track via mp4box, the video was no longer marked as Dolby Vision.. That surprised me . Given it is a bad rip from a DV perspective, I am not sure what that means since I never had a proper rip. I played the video in a forced manner and it seemed DV.

2) The audio track is definitely 7:1 when I check my avr so I think I believe I am playing a lossless DTS HA track but given that the Apple TV converts everything to LPCM I can't tell other than it is 7.1 vs a 5.1

3) Unfortunately, Gladiator has many m2ts (vs 1 for the movie) and there is a theatrical version and a extended version. I think I have to figure out which m2ts go with which video and then assemble them as one big m2ts. For this exercise, I just took the biggest/longest one and muxed it in. The audio is fine but it a random audio track that doesn't go along with the movie in sequence.

4) So, I will have to take some time and figure out how to assembly the "right audio" and mux that into the mp4.

5) I have done John Wick 3 and will post my findings for Gladiator

I used the same/similar process for John Wick 3 Parabellum as Gladiator above.

The mediainfo is below:

This rip worked ! I get Dolby Vision and the right frame rate automatically and I didn't get many errors when I read it in through ffmpeg. So, another reason why the Gladiator rip wasn't right.

Infuse played this one correctly.

I ran into two problems when I tried to mux in the atmos track.

1) I couldn't copy just the video stream (w/o the ac-3 track). I got errors with copy just the video.

2) ffmpeg failed to create the atmos track into the mp4. " AC-3 incompatible with output codec id '86060' ". I will have to look into that.

3) I decided to create a LPCM 7.1 from the atmos track and was able to mux that in with the video and ac3 track.
When I play it from an audio perspective, I only see 5.1 so I am assuming that I am only playing the ac3 track.

As a quick test, you might try playing one of the Dolby Vision samples from the link below to see if you get the DV logo on your Sony.

How can I load these samples onto my NAS for playback on Apple TV 4K?

Don’t use iOS use a Mac or windows PC. Alternately you can download them by copying and pasting the link into download station on your NAS.

You'll probably have the same issues since their the same files. You can try a different browser like firefox and tell it to save the link to disk.
