I made my AppleTV works with file share from my laptop (win7) and my external HDD plug into my Linksys E3200

  1. For share folder on laptop:

  • SMB
  • Server name: I used IP address rather than host name (it doesn't work with hostname in my situation)
  • User name/password: input username/pwd
  • Workgroup: input the wrokgroup as shown in computer properties (NOTE: I put exactly as it shown, CASE SENSITIVE)
  1. For Linksys E3200
  • Goto router config to config share storage
  • SMB
  • Server name: 192.168.1.1
  • Username: admin
  • Password: <password that you set for admin user>
  • Workgroup: put the same workgroup name shown in your router config (mine is 'Workgroup', it's CASE SENSITIVE, when I put 'WORKGROUP' it doesn't work)

HTH,

Ha

What about using Mac OS X 10.7.2?  I'm getting Operation not permitted too.

unfortunately I am not familiar with apples op system but what resolved my problem in Win7 was the actual folders were not shared. I had shared the drives but didn't go deep enough to the folder level.
