Today we're proud to introduce 'Seas0nPass' - a new jailbreak tool designed specifically for the AppleTV.

Seas0nPass was created exclusively for the AppleTV user, as previously no AppleTV specific jailbreak tools were available. Seas0nPass allows you to easily create custom AppleTV IPSW files and restore them in iTunes (similar to the existing Pwnage Tool app). Also included is a simple 'tethered boot' option which aids in using newer AppleTV firmwares when an 'un-tethered' jailbreak is not yet available.

Seas0nPass is available for free, and is open source. The source code is available on Github.

What can I do with Seas0nPass?

  • Jailbreak the AppleTV with the latest 4.1.1 (iOS 4.2.1) software.
  • Easily perform a 'tethered boot' (when necessary).

What is the difference between a 'tethered' and 'un-tethered' jailbreak?

A tethered jailbreak requires the AppleTV to be connected to a computer for a brief moment during startup. An un-tethered jailbreak removes this restriction. Un-tethered jailbreaks are are a bit more complex and take more time to complete.

How much does Seas0nPass cost?

Seas0nPass is available as a free download - no strings attached.

What are the minimum requirements?

Mac: OSX 10.6 or later

Windows: coming soon

Can I use this on my iPhone, iPad, or other iOS device?

Nope. Seas0nPass is designed exclusively for the 2nd gen AppleTV.

Sounds great! Where can I download it?

The Seas0nPass app, and user guides can be found at Seas0nPass.com

Comments are welcome below. Enjoy Smile

As a matter of fact i DO!! have my own application that i wrote myself and works just fine.

Apple/Mac OS is very easy to write for Windows and i been doing it for years.

The reason I'm pissed is just for this fact.

IMO: Firecore will never come out with a windows version and just stole the money for windows users.

BTW: The ATV2 I have was given to me by someone else that was also pissed.

I'm no fool and would NEVER buy any apply product.

Upgrade? I think not!

That would be a major DOWNGRADE, Sorry buddy.

Apple/Mac has been trying to play catch up for yesrs.

That's correct, you will need SHSH files saved for the firmware you are wanting to downgrade to that is the only issue.

There is more information about SHSH files <a href="http://iphoneblogr.com/2010/10/jargon-buster-what-is-a-shsh-file/">here</a>

One other thing - After the restore in iTunes the AppleTV will need to be disconnected from the computer before before attempting to do a tethered boot.

I've added this step to the the Seas0nPass guide.

Submitted by thescragster on January 11, 2011 - 4:33pm

You do not HAVE to jailbreak your Apple TV, if you would like to use it just the way it is that's completely fine.

Some people like to jailbreak their devices to be able to add some extra features. Things like Plex (an application that allows you to stream media in any kind of format from your computer), or to install a built in web-browser, that kind of thing. There are some quite cool features that jailbreak allows you to have Smile

Hi,

Try using this tutorial on how to enter DFU mode, if you enter correctly it should hopefully fix the 1602 error you are having.

Windows version for what?! You need to be clear. Firecore does not make Jailbreaks!!! They make software for use after you jailbreak! You can download and use a windows installer for your Firecore product. So please understand what you are asking for first....

Submitted by robiv8 on January 11, 2011 - 4:55pm

OK Now its going! B-)

The triky is! When you have the iOS 4.1 on the ATV2 then make a Update to 4.1.1After this you can make the Seas0nPass procedur. When comes the error with not restore then go to iTunes and klick with "alt" on the restore (wiederherstellung) and take the new restore ISPW.

After this make the Boot Tethered

Robi

Submitted by milanb.7127 on January 11, 2011 - 5:11pm

Everything went well, except for restoring in iTunes, always the same error: 1600
Very FRUSTRATING!!!!!!!! Someone already here who has done the jailbreak without errors??
Any help would be welcome, or feedback about solving the error 1600 problem

Submitted by rickl.60532 on January 11, 2011 - 5:16pm

OK, now got it to go all good until aTV Flash Black.

Install successful.

Black screen on TV.  Light on on aTV.  Blinks on remote usage.

?????????????????

A JB for ATV2 that i wrote myself.

It was very easy to do and only took me about four days to finish.

This is why i know there will be no JB for windows from this site!

Also I'm not asking for nothing and i don't understand why it is so hard for who ever is writing the code for this so called JB that don't work.

I guess ya need a windows coder/writer to fix an easy problem.

After jailbreaking using this tutorial I have lost my HDMI output.... nothing shows up on the screen at all. Any ideas?

i just jailbrak my ATV2 but i cant install any packages, any help?

Submitted by adrianamos on January 11, 2011 - 6:08pm

Hi miland.7127

I had the same issue and it was very frustrating! After some research what I found out (in layman's terms) is that 1600/16xx errors are a USB issue. It was suggested that you try a different USB port, or restart and try USB ports again. If that doesn't work try another computer.

I kept getting 1600 errors on my MacBook Pro (late 2009) so I tried my iMac (Early 2010) and all was good!

There is a fix for these errors called iREB http://ih8sn0w.com/index.php/products/view/ireb.snow but it's only for PC at the moment. They say a Mac version is on its way.

What i dont understand is.......when you jailbreak, and if you manage to get Seasonpass installed, when you unplug your ATV from your Mac/PC and return it to your living room, how do you manage to boot it up again? as it is not plugged into a powersource.

Submitted by jvandellen on January 11, 2011 - 6:23pm

Just plug the powercable back in before unplugging the usb cable from the computer!

Submitted by jvandellen on January 11, 2011 - 6:28pm

I can't even believe people are bitching about this free product! Try reading the manual tethered jailbreak instructions & see if you can figure it out for yourselves you whining babies. Firecore ftw!

Submitted by Anon on January 11, 2011 - 6:33pm

I am having the same problems. The only reason why I bought this product was so I can surf the web and the web browser doesn't even show up as an option. And when I go to install it under Maintenance, it fails the installation. It won't download couch surfer pro.

Submitted by catj.36136 on January 11, 2011 - 6:50pm

Submitted by thescragster on January 11, 2011 - 6:56pm

Yeah or use a laptop to tethered boot it Smile

Submitted by thescragster on January 11, 2011 - 6:57pm

This is a known bug for Seas0nPass, this is being worked on and an update should be released soon Smile

Submitted by thescragster on January 11, 2011 - 6:58pm

Try using the tethered-boot section inside of Seas0nPass, hopefully this should sort it out

Submitted by thescragster on January 11, 2011 - 6:59pm

Turn plugging the Apple TV into your computer and using the tethered-boot mode from Seas0nPass. (do not unplug the power cable before plugging into the TV). This should sort it

Submitted by Phobiac on January 11, 2011 - 7:12pm

I had been waiting for this for some time, but hesitant to try Seas0nPass given the comments here.  However, i figured it couldn't do any harm to try.

Completed it without any issues, easy peasy lemon squeezy.

My ATV2 was already at 4.1.1 (updated it by mistake from 4.1 to 4.1.1 due to the nag messages). I'm not sure if that was making a difference.  I followed the direction to a 'T' on the Jailbreank 101: Seas0nPass page (http://support.firecore.com/entries/387605) without issue, no modification needed.  Once Jailbroken, I installed ATV Flash (black) it uploaded the files and i though that I might have to do another tethered boot, but it popped right up with the nitoTV menu.

After trying 3 times I finally got it tethered. Itune successfully restored the newly created ipsw files and I was able to tethered the boot by upoadint the file sucessfully in the Apple TV. The only thing I don't understand is that I don't see anything different in the menu in Apple TV.

I hope I didn't miss anything important but followed the instuctions http://support.firecore.com/entries/387605

Sorry I'm new at this Smile

Thanks for your help and great job Firecore team.

Still trying the manual tethered boot as I am on 10.5.8

I am getting the now popular "unknown required load" error when executing the ./tethered boot command on my 10.5.8 MacBook Pro. Can anyone confirm this is because of 10.5.8 and that 10.6 or greater I can get the tetheredboot to execute? If so does anyone know how if I can execute the tetheredboot utility in the windows version and still send it the iBSS and kernelcache parms????

Thanks!

Best news I have had all day!

So I tried this the first time you posted the link, and it worked smoooth, but then i unplugged the atv from the computer and plugged it to my tv, and it wouldnt boot..read some these posts and realized you CANT unplug, so therefor use a laptop or something..

So I tried it with my laptop, and got it working, booted like regular apple tv but with the nivotv. Then i installed atvflash and it restarted itself, and its been 30 minutes since, and still stuck on the apple logo... ANY IDEAS?

Submitted by ckiriaze on January 11, 2011 - 8:09pm

and just as i finish typing this, the appletv reboots AGAIN, back to apple logo, and still stuck on that. ATV light still blinking steadily.

What is the version number for the newest SeasonPass? I have .64 but am still getting the can not install packages error. Nothing will update or install. The creation time of .64 is 3:07pm today.

Thanks.

Submitted by Anon on January 11, 2011 - 8:34pm

Now you need to an app on the jailbroken device. Go install nitotv, beta of atvflash black, Plex, etc. Go to appletvblogr for details...

Submitted by Anon on January 11, 2011 - 8:36pm

I mean you need to INSTALL an application the jailbroken ATV. Until you do all you have is a jailbrken version of an ATV with the same functionality until you install some apps!

Enjoy!
