It's a brand new year, and we've wasted no time getting back to work making the AppleTV even more awesome. As a result, we're happy to present you with a fresh, new version of aTV Flash (black) which features a number of great new things including: video zoom options, grid view watched icons, quick access to recently visited pages, improved support for subtitles, and a truckload of other improvements and bug fixes.

Full details on what's new and how to update can be found below.

New Zoom Options

Three all new zoom options (Normal, Crop, and Stretch) allow you choose how videos are displayed. You can keep videos in their native format (widescreen or pillar box) or crop/stretch them to fill the entire screen.

Grid View Watched Indicators

Watched indicator icons have been added to the grid view. These icons allow you to quickly see which content is new and ready to be enjoyed. (Note: These can be disabled through the Media --> Settings menu if desired)

Recently Visited Pages

Couch Surfer now displays thumbnail images in the 'top shelf' area of the main menu, which allows you to quickly get back to recently viewed pages.

Hi, I would like to upgrade my version of apple tv secong gen from v4.2.2 2003 it has been jail broken. when I choose update from the menu it always fails. I'd like to try aTV Flash (black), but would like to update the os first. could anyone suggest how I can acomplish this? I am also hoping aTV Flash (black) will work with the accessability (voiceover)
Thanks.

You can also use the IP number of your ATV like root@192.168.1.25. If you don't know the ip number look into the ATV network settings.

Any chance that Couch surfer will run Adobe Flash soon? (Without all hackery of trying to get Flash installed manually

James and co. Just wanted to relay to you that besides making really good software, you do a great job of describing and documenting the changes you make in the platforms. As a corporate citizen I can tell you many companies wish they had as good documentation and communication.

I second this.  All of my media is set in different folders by title then underneath that by season as I still run XBMC on other machines.  Please can this be added to a future release.

As an update though it went smoothly and no issues to report.  Thanks for all the continued work.

Hi

Could you please add support for scaninavian characters (e.g æøå) in the subtitles? Now I have to use XBMC in order to make them be displayed correctly...

Best regards

... forget it - found out that it works when changing encoding to european by reading your support pages :P

Hi James

The "Click" at the start of a movie has gone in the new version 1.2. but playing avitar Vob file still getting audio drop out when AC3 and dolby are selected in the menu, but if you de-select dolbly , the AC3 plays perfect.

Your best option will be to re-jailbreak with the current version of Seas0nPass. This will jailbreak and update your AppleTV at the same time.

The determining factor with Plex is the AppleTV version number.

There is a stable version for AppleTV 4.3 and earlier, but only a beta version for 4.4 and later.

You can always update aTV Flash (black) without it affecting 3rd party plugins such as Plex or XBMC.

Submitted by Anon on January 17, 2012 - 5:02pm

You can install Plex by doing the steps on the following page :D

Great! Glad you found the guide. :)

For those experiencing this same issue, the encoding type can be adjusted by following the steps described here.

Thanks! This time I at least got through the commands you listed. But I don't see any Plex in the menu system after restarting the ATV2? Btw I pressed the select button on the silver remote until the ATV turned off and then pressed it again to wake it. Is that a proper restart? I am really an amateur at this.. my apologies!

The last few lines in terminal before I restarted (it didn't restart by itself):

..

Unpacking com.plex.client-plugin (from .../com.plex.client-plugin_0.0.9.0.0-312c11b0_iphoneos-arm.deb) ...

Setting up com.plex.client-plugin (0.9.0.0-312c11b0) ...

Which looks like a success, but no Plex to be found.. I have already installed XBMC and I assume Plex would just show up in the main menu like XBMC is?

Thanks

anton plankton

EDIT: Sorry, I found a relaunch option in one of the settings menus.. now I have got Plex in the main menu! Thanks! :)

Hello. Any news on rmvb support? (or any idea on how can I watch rmvb videos on ATV2?) Thanks!

Submitted by ASFx on January 17, 2012 - 5:23pm

You can update from the menu. Just go to the maintenance menu and update everything you see there that needs an update. When i checked, it was maintenance, couch surfer, and media player.

Hello:

I use my ATV2 and firecore to view files stored on my computer over my network. I am using public IP addresses, but as they are not static, I would like to use a service like dyndns eg. hostname.dyndns.org so that i don't have to update my ip every few days 123.456.1.789 when I try to use the hostname.dyndns.org I am unable to connect to my windows smb shares.

Any ideas how to do this so I don't have to keep updating the server IP?

Thank you.

Great job with the new release.  Each update gets better and better!  Media Player has become my favorite player.

The only improvement I would like to see is the Playlist for video files as in the Original AppleTV (Silver) where you can create playlists by selecting individual files rather than an entire folder.  But what would really be great is the ability to create "Smart Playlists" by actor, etc.  This would be very useful for those with large video libraries / files.

Keep up the great work.  We all greatly appreciate your efforts.

Having issues accessing my shared folders in my computer after the update. I use SMB sharing, and everything was working fine before the update. Now the only thing I see us the circle spinning in the middle of the screen. Anyone with a similar issue? BTW, my computer is a PC running windows 7 64bits.

Thanks

Nice update! Any improvement on Video_TS folders sometimes losing audio sync after pausing and/or scanning?

Nice to hear about microDVD sub support. Any word on VOBSubs?

Submitted by brianm.0411 on January 17, 2012 - 9:37pm

Only one suggestion...

Please add the option to resume play or start from beginning like Netflix does when starting a movie/show.  Weather it stores data on the Apple or not, i dont care. If it cant read from the the home server then just have it store it on Apple a couple of shows data. this will help when i go from downstairs to upstairs in my house to watch a show.

SouthPark is free to watch online at southpark.com, might try that inside the couch-surfer app.

I might add that I was also unable to watch anything from the recently watched items over AFP. I then cleared metadata, removed and re-added the share again, re-installed MediaPlayer but this didn't solve the problem. Can I somehow get a log file to better debug what's wrong?

Submitted by Anon on January 17, 2012 - 11:03pm

You miss the sound.

Submitted by TheWiz on January 17, 2012 - 11:23pm

He you hypocrit. Foreigners also use it and kids don't speak English yet. So you shut up.

Submitted by samulik on January 17, 2012 - 11:49pm

The English language is spelled with a capital E.

Submitted by lav1984 on January 17, 2012 - 11:59pm

please do consider having VLC-style crop and zoom options in future releases.

Also, i believe most of the people have movie folders rather than movie files in one main folder; in that case one doesnt get to see the great Grid view as you've in the gird screenshots above. i'm sure you guys can figure out a way to bypass this problem and still show the fetched movie poster for the many movie folders..

I still haven't installed the latest update but I was wondering if MediaPlayer has been fixed to play .mkf files ripped with MakeMkv? The playback is very slow and choppy. XMBC however play these files nice and smoothly. The UI in MediaPlayer is so much nicer that I'd rather use it if only it would handle these files.

I still don't understand why there has been no official response to the plea for a VPN. The old box had it, why not the "Black". Is there a technical reason why the VPN functionality was pulled? Please at least tell us why there is no hope in ever getting this feature re-instated.

If you want to watch a foreigner movie, you will need English subtitle also!
