Today we're happy to release new versions of Seas0nPass and aTV Flash (black) that are compatible with latest 5.0 (iOS 5.1) software running on the ATV2. A ton of work has gone into getting everything updated, and a huge thanks go out to Brandon Holland (@640774n6) and Dustin Howett (@DHowett) who both contributed immensely in adding support for 5.0.

Is this a tethered or untethered jailbreak? What's the difference?

Seas0nPass currently provides a tethered jailbreak for the new 5.0 (iOS 5.1) Apple TV software. Functionally, both jailbreak types are identical, the only difference being that a tethered jailbreak requires the Apple TV to be connected to a Mac/PC when first powering it on. Since the Apple TV doesn't have a battery, and is rarely ever powered off, this usually only needs to be done once.

What's new in the 5.0 Apple TV software? Should I update?

  • New interface: - Fast, visual access to all content choices
  • Movie purchases in iCloud: Support for buying movies on Apple TV and playing back purchased movies from iCloud
  • Genius Recommendations: Recommendations for content on the iTunes Store based on previous rentals and purchases
  • Screensaver photos: New National Geographic photos built-in for screensaver
  • On-device sign-up: On-device sign up for content partners on Apple TV using your Apple ID

Updating to the new 5.0 software is not required, and all aTV Flash (black) features will continue to be supported on Apple TV versions 4.2 and later.

What about the ATV3, will this work?

Unfortunately not. Work is still ongoing for the ATV3, and we hope to have more news soon. For the latest updates be sure to follow us on Twitter.

Which plugins are currently supported on 5.0?

  • Couch Surfer (works)
  • Last.fm (works)
  • Maintenance (works)
  • Media Player (works)
  • NitoTV (works)
  • Plex (works)
  • Remote HD (works)
  • Rowmote (works)
  • RSS Feeds (works)
  • Weather (works)
  • XBMC (works)
  • Overflow (not working)

Note: Non-working items require an author update for 5.0 compatibility.

Screenshots! Give us screenshots!

We listened to all the feedback we received and integrated the new icons in a way that should please virtually everyone. Check out the screenshots below for the final result.

You can't, Apple stopped signing iOS 5.0 months ago.

The current version of iOS that Apple is signing for the Apple TV is iOS 5.1 which contains Apple TV Software 5.0

Does no remote hard drive mean no NAS for movies and TV shows for multiple ATV2's in my home?

I know FireCore will come out untethered soon.

My hat is off to your folks at FireCore for accomplishing this so fast.

CONGRATS!!! and please keep GOING!!!

Submitted by pteronaut on March 30, 2012 - 3:11pm

It doesn't turn off, it goes into low power mode, turning the led & the HDMI port off.

Nice work guys!

Bye then!

I am personally thrilled with this product and the speed of progress turned a cheap media player into an excellent t one. Keep up the good work and ignore these comments.

Submitted by Anon on March 30, 2012 - 3:18pm

Very nice guys!!! Keep up the good job!!! Tethered is annoying for the fact of every time ATV freezes (that is common in brand new versions of ATVFlash) but like others I understand that Firecore is the only thing that justify have an AppleTV.

Submitted by james on March 30, 2012 - 3:19pm

Ah, that actually refers to the iOS remote control app 'Remote HD'.

Back on 4.4.4 !! and loving it, until 5.0 is unthethered and more app compatible.

Submitted by slicksam6 on March 30, 2012 - 3:34pm

Like always, firecore worked hard and came out with success. For all of you that are not happy with the tethered part, wait, I'm sure the untethered is just around the corner. Firecore wins the round, NOW it's time for the knockout punch. APPLETV 3 jailbreak!!!!

Submitted by eninety2@yahoo.com on March 30, 2012 - 3:34pm

Can someone please tell me how to get my grid screen to look like that? It looks perfect with all the posters.

Submitted by Anon on March 30, 2012 - 3:37pm

Hi Folks,
I think some people should be more patient with the people at firecore. Jailbreaking isn't an easy task. Or can you do it?
I will also wait for an untethered jailbreak and for XMBC support, but this tethered jailbreak and this aTV-software update is a huge step forward towards these goals.
Great work FIRECORE-TEAM!!!!
Don't be too frustrated about all these negative comments.

Any plans to add functionality to let you move the tiles around? I don't care about 95% of them, so it'd be great if I could just put Netflix, Youtube, and Media Player as the top three...

^ This.

This is great news. Without FireCore we would not use the ATV2. We happen to really like Plex so no updating here but I wanted to thank the firecore team again for the great work they do.

mmm I congratulate today's news but Unless you provide very specific instructions of how to the apple tv to my mac I have no idea how to do that, and would I have to drain the power of it then? to to the "for the first time powering" coz I currently use my apple tv.  I feel very frustrated...

Hello Mate,

Many thanks for your hard work for release of the jailbreak of ver 5.0 for Apple TV2. I tried using the seasonpass and followed all of the steps as metioned in the following link -

http://support.firecore.com/entries/387605

Once the process ran successfully but on connecting my ATV2 to my TV I see that it is still in recovery mode. I repeated the process and then got error 1604.

Please help.

Thanks

Plex is the most important feature for me.
Do you have any idea when I can get a new release with Plex Client running?

Submitted by lab72 on March 30, 2012 - 4:05pm

Cant get it work when i plug back into tv it shows usb and i tunes logo help

Submitted by robthomas619 on March 30, 2012 - 4:08pm

Thank you for the update! I just went through and followed all the steps, but when i plug the ATV2 into my TV, it displays the iTunes logo and a USB cable instead of the start screen. Any ideas why this is?

Submitted by Anon on March 30, 2012 - 4:12pm

Fully agreed. I paid for FC since Beta and I've always been happy.

Tethered or untethered JB's are not FC's fault. If you don't like the jailbreak process, go buy three coffees with that $20 and move on... this is extra functionality of the ATV that isn't supported by the manufacturer, but is actually really great. I'm nothing but happy with you guys!

Submitted by Anon on March 30, 2012 - 4:15pm

Really? Writing on the wall?

A brand new Apple product comes out and it should work OOB for a patching software?

They made one for ATV and then made one for ATV2... both times making an open beta and the producting a commercially viable product. How is today any different?

Submitted by shastaron on March 30, 2012 - 4:20pm

Love the looks of the new interface.  Because of logistical issues I will be waiting for the untethered.  But I am very happy with the development and growth of this product.  Thanks!

Submitted by trickydic on March 30, 2012 - 4:24pm

Your right.. however i am just happy to  be able to run aTV Flash.. I was to late having received my and already upgraded to 5.0. Thanks fireCore, it works great, but I AM lookingforward to being able to run XBMC as soon as possible!

Submitted by Anon on March 30, 2012 - 4:28pm

Media player is much better than XBMC. It looks more like iOS and you don't have to wait for it to load and it's not slow. People should try Media player for awhile. New stuff gets added all of the time!

Submitted by Anon on March 30, 2012 - 4:29pm

As stated above. TETHER

Submitted by Anon on March 30, 2012 - 4:47pm

Recently bought a ATV2 with a discount not knowing that the store pre-updated the product as a "service". after the update of Seas0npass you just earned yourself a new (and exited) customer :D. Keep up the good work! ATV FLAAAASH FTW.

Submitted by Anon on March 30, 2012 - 4:50pm

I think you should ask that question to the plesk-people...

firecore != (is not) plesk (nor xmbc)

Submitted by Anon on March 30, 2012 - 4:51pm

ATVFlash is still useless without external USB hard drive support.

Submitted by autoy on March 30, 2012 - 5:00pm

You couldn't be more wrong, ATVflash works wonders with your network shares, NAS or Time Capsule/Airport Extreme.

Submitted by Anon on March 30, 2012 - 5:02pm

I second the motion that "ATVFlash is still useless without external USB hard drive support." I don't want to use a NAS drive to stream my movies, only reason I have kept my 1st gen Apple TV and haven't switched to black. Who do I have to pay to get USB support for new gen Apple TV?

Submitted by Anon on March 30, 2012 - 5:03pm

I just updated mine, and it's not showing any wifi networks to connect it to, i plug in a lan cable and it still wasn't showing any network connection.
Has this happened to any one else?

Submitted by Anon on March 30, 2012 - 5:12pm

Wow, a lot of moaners here - you don't like it, don't buy it. Me - I love it, keep up the good work guys, best software purchase ever!

Submitted by silviomarzano on March 30, 2012 - 5:16pm

I Have the same problem, i need help!

Submitted by Anon on March 30, 2012 - 5:18pm

Cannot update to 1.4.1. I get a failed attempt. Log says no space left on device, cannot mmap on empty file, the status list or package file cannot be parsed or opened. Why?

Submitted by Anon on March 30, 2012 - 5:21pm

However it's not really fine print is it.
Only a fool would not read the text of the update before updating, so you'd VERY angry at yourself.

Submitted by Anon on March 30, 2012 - 5:23pm

Well, the JB is done externally to FC, so... if you want to program it, then cool.

FC is selling additional features... not a jailbreak.

Submitted by van2Dpool on March 30, 2012 - 5:24pm

ok, it finally worked with the lan cable. I'm glad I had one laying around.

Submitted by Anon on March 30, 2012 - 5:24pm

What? Huh? Smoking what?

Different hardware on ATV3? What? I can't put FireCore on my toaster WHat/!/?

Submitted by Anon on March 30, 2012 - 5:27pm

Total reinstall?

...

You don't need to total resinstall. Also, backup your settings using the console... that is a feature.

Submitted by Anon on March 30, 2012 - 5:28pm

We need you to ask to join FC, I'm sure this will assist them creating jailbreaks and enhancements for unknown, unreleased hardware with your l33t sk1llz.

Submitted by michaelf.5521 on March 30, 2012 - 5:31pm

Me too. seas0npass seemed to work and it came back up and I was able to configure networking, but after I installed aTV Flash (black) 1.4.1 nothing appeared in the menu. So I tried rebooting and then it came up and said it can't find any networks.

Submitted by Anon on March 30, 2012 - 5:37pm

You know it brutha! ATVflash with a Synology NAS = Sweet streaming of DVD "backups"

Submitted by shawnn.7183 on March 30, 2012 - 5:37pm

Great work guys, can't wait for the next release!

Submitted by markb.5817 on March 30, 2012 - 5:40pm

If i update this version, will i lose my XBMC

Submitted by Anon on March 30, 2012 - 5:42pm

people have no idea what firecore does. they don't do the jailbreak and they don't compile xbmc for the ARM processor in the ATV. they just package this stuff up once its ready from third party devs. they are trying to make this stupid proof. most of this stuff could be done without firecore's tools, but would require a lot more manual intervention and users to read a long list of steps.

Submitted by lanej.6611 on March 30, 2012 - 5:49pm

I Agree 100%!!!! it rocks!!!!!!!!!
