Today we're happy to release new versions of Seas0nPass and aTV Flash (black) that are compatible with latest 5.0 (iOS 5.1) software running on the ATV2. A ton of work has gone into getting everything updated, and a huge thanks go out to Brandon Holland (@640774n6) and Dustin Howett (@DHowett) who both contributed immensely in adding support for 5.0.

Is this a tethered or untethered jailbreak? What's the difference?

Seas0nPass currently provides a tethered jailbreak for the new 5.0 (iOS 5.1) Apple TV software. Functionally, both jailbreak types are identical, the only difference being that a tethered jailbreak requires the Apple TV to be connected to a Mac/PC when first powering it on. Since the Apple TV doesn't have a battery, and is rarely ever powered off, this usually only needs to be done once.

What's new in the 5.0 Apple TV software? Should I update?

  • New interface: - Fast, visual access to all content choices
  • Movie purchases in iCloud: Support for buying movies on Apple TV and playing back purchased movies from iCloud
  • Genius Recommendations: Recommendations for content on the iTunes Store based on previous rentals and purchases
  • Screensaver photos: New National Geographic photos built-in for screensaver
  • On-device sign-up: On-device sign up for content partners on Apple TV using your Apple ID

Updating to the new 5.0 software is not required, and all aTV Flash (black) features will continue to be supported on Apple TV versions 4.2 and later.

What about the ATV3, will this work?

Unfortunately not. Work is still ongoing for the ATV3, and we hope to have more news soon. For the latest updates be sure to follow us on Twitter.

Which plugins are currently supported on 5.0?

  • Couch Surfer (works)
  • Last.fm (works)
  • Maintenance (works)
  • Media Player (works)
  • NitoTV (works)
  • Plex (works)
  • Remote HD (works)
  • Rowmote (works)
  • RSS Feeds (works)
  • Weather (works)
  • XBMC (works)
  • Overflow (not working)

Note: Non-working items require an author update for 5.0 compatibility.

Screenshots! Give us screenshots!

We listened to all the feedback we received and integrated the new icons in a way that should please virtually everyone. Check out the screenshots below for the final result.

Finally got it to work. All my fault... You must read instructions properly! :$

Where I screwed up was here. In the final crucial part where you hook up the HDMI cable after you remove the usb cable I was doing this at my computer desk, then unplugging the ATV2 and then hooking it up to the TV and plugging and powering it back on. Duh.

I took the iMac out in the TV room this morning and did the entire process without any screw ups.

THANKS for all your hard work. Looking forward to getting XMBC plugin again.

Are you a fucking idiot?

Really?  It clearly states TETHERED JAILBREAK.  THe fact you need a pc is not a bug.  And if you have that inconsistent power you should really look into a UPS because constant power failures and outages is terrible for any electronic device.

thanks for the great work

Thanks as always Firecore for the great product and quick release of new jailbreaks.

Sadly so many idiots on this site are to lazy to read and don't realize you clearly said this was a tethered jailbreak.  Honestly i don't see the big deal since unless you actually unplug the damn thing to be forced to tether boot is so rare.  And this is coming from a guy with a Harmony 1100 remote that shuts my atv2 down every time i click all off.

Can't wait for ATV3 support of atvflash, then this will truly be the most amazing product ever, not like it already isn't but i really want my 1080p support :P

Yeah Adam. I agree !

Great comments. You're so right.

I'm sorry, I'm very new to this JB, I just want to know is there any way so I can use my external hard drive with it?

Submitted by Anon on April 1, 2012 - 6:51pm

I've tried so many time now to install the SeasONPass software on my 2nd Gen ATV running 5.1 software update using a macbook pro with no luck! I've tried both tethered and untethered and it seems to be working as it unzip the software installs it on the ATV using iTunes but after a disconnect and reconnect to TV all I get a super fast crazy flashing light on the ATV with an on screen display of nothing but the iTunes icon and USB cord suggesting it be reconnect to ATV.

the only other outcome after all the software unzipping and progress bar stuff has been absolutely no change of any kind. it say the software is successfully been installed but obviously NOT the case

Submitted by Anon on April 1, 2012 - 7:17pm

Umm. No. Try buying a Mac Mini. you can connect anything to it and won't have to worry about jailbreaking.

Submitted by Anon on April 1, 2012 - 7:19pm

Adam is right! Nobody wants to read or troubleshoot anything. Great Job on this Firecore!!!

Submitted by Anon on April 1, 2012 - 7:21pm

Did you purchase the product? ATV Flash is not automatic when jailbreaking through Seas0npass. If not, try resetting your router and download Flash again.

Submitted by dwaynek.8563 on April 1, 2012 - 7:28pm

I get exactly this same problem as well.

The JB and installation of ATV Flash appears to have worked fine (I get the FireCore icon, and the maintenance icon), however I also get no icons in the Maintenance folder, and clicking on Settings will reboot it (consistently)

Strange, but I've done the JB and reinstall at least four times, with identical results.

Hope someone else has seen this.

Thank you FireCore!  I was able to jailbreak my Apple TV 2 (with iOS 5.1), then install and update all working FireCore apps.  I now look forward to the other plugins to catch up to iOS 5.x.

Verified Works:

Media, Browser, Last.FM, Weather, RSS, and NITO TV.

Weather is very slow.  All others are good.

Great job indeed!!!

Dudley,

Here is what worked for me:

1.  Reboot your Mac or PC (trust me)

2. Download the latest Seas0nPass

3. Place you laptop, or desktop within cable reach of where you want to use the Apple TV.

4. Unplug all cables from your Apple TV 2.

5. Make sure you are using the very latest iTunes.

6. Close all open apps.

7. Launch Seas0nPass

8. Choose to create a ISPW (button on left) <--do not plug in apple TV to USB yet

9. Program will download the Apple image for your Apple TV 2.

10. When prompted, insert the USB cable into your computer, then the Apple TV.

11. A light should show on the front of the Apple TV 2.

12. ONLY PLUG IN THE USB CABLE.  Do not use the HDMI, Sound, or POwer, yet.

13. As soon as you see the light in step 11, point your silver Apple TV 2 remote at the device and hold down the Menu and the Play button for 7-10 seconds.

14. Watch the Seas0nPass loader.  It should now say "Located device in DFU Mode" or something like that.

15. The following screens will show a script being built (program loader) for iTunes.

16. Itunes will open and perform an upgrade and then flash install.

17. Only when you see iTunes done, and your device restored, plug IN the power cable to the Apple TV 2.

18. When the power cable is in, close all open programs on your computer.

19. Re-open Saes0nPass and click the right button called "Boot Tethered"

20. Wait for all processes to complete.

21. You will be told it is now safe to unplug the USB cable (only the USB)

22. Plug in your video HDMI and sound if applicable.  **Do not remove power or you have to start at step 19 again**

23. Your device should now show one new shiny icon called FCore (top right icon)

If you are a "paid" customer of FireCore, you can now go to their page to install all the FireCore goodies.  If you just wanted the free Jailbreak, you are done.

I do not work for FireCore, but I was able to do these steps easily.  I just wanted to pass on what I did to make it work.

Good luck!

Like my post said earlier. Read the instructions. I sadly was just like for the past couple of days. Make sure you are doing this by your TV because once you have done the tethered boot and have removed the usb cable you just plug the HDMI cable back into the ATV2 with the other end of the HDMI cable plugged into your TV. Remember, you cannot unplug your ATV2 from the power outlet or you loose everything. That's what I was doing wrong.

I have installed successfully about 5 times the new seas0npass and managed to boot tethered.

I cannot for the life of me then get the APTV2 to find my wireless network....and the Apple base station is sitting about 8 feet from the ATV2.

Any suggestions?

Follow on to my last post: I have restored in iTunes to 5.0 and the ATV2 instantly found the wifi network.  Looks like a bug in Seas0npass Firecore!

Submitted by LarsLauritzen on April 2, 2012 - 3:30am

I did nearly the same, but in step 13 i had too temp. connect power too get the ATV into DFU mode, and after it entered DFU mode i removed the power and proceded with the proces with full succes Wink

Does anyone know if Firecore are working on an untethered jailbreak?

Submitted by ray4you on April 2, 2012 - 6:04am

ATV 2 with flash black works great ! Thanx for this update. It took a while when I JB it but it works perfect !

Big thanx and I can't wait for the new specs, like xbmc etc

Submitted by Anon on April 2, 2012 - 6:39am

i would like to get playlists to atvflash mediaplayer

Submitted by Anon on April 2, 2012 - 7:11am

Nice work guys, but like so many here, I can't upgrade until it's untethered. 3rd party plugins will come, but untethered is essential for me.

Submitted by Anon on April 2, 2012 - 8:10am

I think it would be nice to get some sort of update from the guys at Firecore about the progress on the ATV3.... Is JB for ATV a problem or can we expect something in the coming weeks?

Submitted by Anon on April 2, 2012 - 8:15am

go down in this blog and folow the instruction then it will work

Submitted by Anon on April 2, 2012 - 8:16am

thanks alot i folowed the steps then it worked horay.

Submitted by iksg_photo on April 2, 2012 - 8:40am

Same issue here as well with the Wi-Fi.  Everything else works fine after jailbreaking the ATV2 via Seas0nPass 0.8.3 EXCEPT the Wi-Fi.  I've also started a thread about this but no response (http://forum.firecore.com/topic/7557).  Are you still having this issue or have you figured a way out?  Please let me know.  Thanks.

Submitted by Anon on April 2, 2012 - 8:41am

so did anyone find a way to move the icons around? like putting the media player on the first line??

Submitted by Anon on April 2, 2012 - 8:57am

I would like that too!
There are so many rumors on the internet...
Some saying that there will never be a JB for ATV3 some saying in a couple of weeks...

A "official" comment WITHOUT an actual ETA would be very nice!!

I have an ATV2 that I upgraded to IOS 5.1 before knowing about XBMC, ATV Flash, jail breaking, etc. ( so I don't have the SHSH blobs or whatever those are called )

I also don't care for the IOS 5.1 enhancements.

Question:

If I was able to do the latest tethered jailbreak of IOS 5.1, would it be possible to then downgrade to the prior version of IOS and then have an untethered jailbroken ATV2 ? Or is the upgrade process a one way street, and you can't ever downgrade unless you have saved off the SHSH blobs?

Submitted by gordonr.1446 on April 2, 2012 - 11:32am

Yes,

I upgraded to the latest version. I like everything about the latest version (except) I was missing my XMBC as well.

So I went back to version 4.4.4 9a406a without a problem. If you backed up your older versions you shouldn't have a problem.

Submitted by jacob Camhi on April 2, 2012 - 1:12pm

Thank you Scott it worked like a charm, i spent two days with no luck looking at the connect to i-tunes logo.

Submitted by Drummerwun on April 2, 2012 - 1:41pm

Yes, they are. As there is no untethered jailbreak for any A5, 5.1 iOS device, we are all at the mercy of the DEV Team to find a new hole in the loader. That is what is required , basically, to have an untethered break. If you want to help speed things up, google "submit crash logs to Chronic DEV team" and that will speed things up a bit.

Submitted by vintageb3 on April 2, 2012 - 2:17pm

Nope Kevin...still have the same problem...

Submitted by Anon on April 2, 2012 - 2:41pm

everything works fine for me... thanks!

would like to know though how to move icons to bring mediaplayer on first line

Submitted by Anon on April 2, 2012 - 2:44pm

Thanks! Raingods is working XBMC Eden +weebtv on ATV2 iOS 5.1

Great job, thanks to all

Submitted by Anon on April 2, 2012 - 3:19pm

To move Media on first line I turn iTunes matching to hide on Parents control setting.

Help!!!! I get all the way to "preparing apple tv for restore" then it times out and gives me error 1604... I've used all the USB ports I have, no luck...I can restore to the apple software just fine... Any suggestions?

Submitted by marwinb.0810 on April 2, 2012 - 4:40pm

Thanks Drummerwun!

After following your steps I can now see the shiny red icon of FireCore!

Perhaps the knowledge base about Seas0nPass should be updated with this description of yours! Wink

Cheers!

are you on 5.0? if yes restore via Itunes and try again, I had same error and if you read below others also. I manage to JB 2 units so far on 5.0 2nd gen.

Submitted by dcmackie on April 2, 2012 - 5:43pm

are there any clear instructions to update from ATV2 4.4 to 5.0 I already have firecore 1.4 installed but Apple says their software is up to date. What am I missing?

Submitted by jcrespo_miami on April 2, 2012 - 5:55pm

Hi, do a restore from Itunes not from the atv.
