At long last we're proud to announce the release of the first beta version of aTV Flash (black) for the new AppleTV. This version features a number of exciting features, with many more to come. It took a bit longer to complete than anticipated, but it's a great start to what we hope will be a powerful software suite for the new black AppleTV.

During the beta phase we will be working to improve current features and add new ones, so we would appreciate any feedback you may have. More info on how to submit feedback can be seen near the end of the post.

Read on for more details on what's included and how to get the beta.

The first version of aTV Flash (black) is compatible with the 4.0 AppleTV software only. The new 4.1 software requires a few adjustments but we plan to have compatible version available soon.

Update: Currently aTV Flash (black) is for Mac only. We plan to have a Windows compatible version within the next few days.

Update #2: The Windows version of aTV Flash (black) is now available.

aTV Flash (black) will be available at the discounted discounted price of $19.95 during the beta (pre-order) phase. Once the final version is ready for release the price will return to the normal level of $29.95. The original aTV Flash is also being reduced to $39.95.

What's in the beta?

  • Surf the Web - Experience the web in all its glory and stream HTML5 video from many popular sites (note: not all HTML5 sites supported yet).
  • Discover New Music - Find new artists you'll love by accessing radio stations, artist bios and slideshows.
  • Plex Client - Stream media from Plex Server running on your Mac. (big thanks to quiqueck for putting this together)
  • Info on Demand - Keep track of current weather and news feeds on your AppleTV.
  • One-click Updates - Install, remove or update plugins in a snap through the native AppleTV interface.

What's coming soon?

  • Go Beyond iTunes - Enable playback of additional media formats.
  • Access Media Anywhere - Stream media from most NAS devices.
  • Much, much more...

How do I get it?

  • Current Users - aTV Flash (black) is available as a free upgrade. After logging into your account you will have an extra download link for aTV Flash (black). Your normal aTV Flash license and download links will remain unchanged. Additionally any available renewal specials can also be found in your account.
  • New Users - aTV Flash (black) is available for pre-order at a discounted price of $19.95. All pre-orders get instant access to the beta.
  • Beta Signups - Those that signed up for the beta will be receiving information on how to download and install the beta via email. We're working hard to get this done ASAP so please be patient.

Help us improve

Please keep in mind this is beta software, and some features may will not be 100% complete. We're committed to providing the best software possible and your feedback helps us greatly in achieving this goal. If you have an idea on how we can improve or have found something that's not quite right please tell us.

Comments are welcome below. Enjoy. Smile

Ten days since the first beta was launched, I can't wait to have the new beta 4.1 compatible! The thing is I didn't find a way to jailbreak 4.1 in apple tv, anyone tried it?

Submitted by Anon on December 8, 2010 - 5:48am

This is a tehered jailbreak - I did this using PwnageTool from my hackintosh but need to use my netbook to do a tethered boot - can be done from VMWare Player but requires 10.6 and up - and the only image I had was 10.5.5 to hand.

MuscleNerd has just tweeted that they have a workaround for 4.2.1 untehtered JB using 4.2b3 SHSH blobs that cydia saved for phones, but don't think this will apply to the Apple TV. So roll on @comex's hopeful untethering (or I will need to install OS X on my netbook to get things working again!)

Is it thinkable to integrate something like imobilecinema into the browser to get at least support for some flash video? I know imobilecinema is not developed anymore, but maybe the authors can still be contacted and are willing to help out with their code.

How would you install aTV Flash beta after jailbreaking tethered on iOS 4.2 using Pawnage?

Submitted by Anon on December 8, 2010 - 9:00pm

Simple questions to The developers:
1. when will The ATF flash version be available for 4.1?
2. Will and if so when will a VPN functionality be integrated, so that netflix can be watched out of Europe?

If booth is given, I ll immediately buy your product!

why isn't working outside of the US?
I can get it to play on my iphone, PC, Mac... but not my AppleTV due to restrictions?
explanation will be appreciated!

I would love to know that VPN functionality can be added soon, I live in Canada, and I want to connect to Netflix US using my Apple TV. Please developers, we need your reply to know whether you will add or not VPN functionality to the ATV.

We appreciate your response on that matter...

Just a quickie but what user agent does the browser present?

Catchup TV sites like the BBC iPlayer in the UK serve an iOS site to the right user agent.

Submitted by james on December 9, 2010 - 12:49pm is currently available in Australia, Canada, Germany, New Zealand, the UK and the US. Due to an oversight on our part only the UK and US are supported in the current version - we'll have the other countries available in the next version.

I read the news that  aTV Flash (black) for the Apple TV 2G enable additional media formats such as AVI, MP4, MKV, DVD files and to support media streaming from most NAS devices (including Airport Extreme and Time Capsule) in the near future. You don’t need to be worry about the original Apple TV features, they will all remain fully operational.- Seems really great. It's a pity that not all HTML5 sites are supported yet, this might do affect for some flash based or FLV video enjoy.Luckily, I have also got iFunia video converter for my all kinds video watching, which help me save all popular formats like AVI, WMV, AVCHD, MKV, FLV, H.264/AVC, MP4, MOV, 3GP to my iDevice. And I want to know if this also can work on for the apple TV connected to iPad?

Trying to update  TV Flash Black Beta and its asking to "Specify password for remote" I haven't changed the password and reading this thread tried "alpine" but it doesn't work what else can I do?

I'm still waiting on VPN support. I use a VPN on my iPad and iPhone and also on my Macs, but I want VPN support on my 2nd gen Apple TV. This little black box has so much potential. Any word on VPNs?

Also having problems with 0.7 ATV black. Get up to the transfer of files, and then I'm asked for "password for remote host". My passwords(computer, router, iTunes, Apple)aren't working, and neither is "alpine". It was never a problem I had with breaking the original ATV, so I'm stuck.

When I try to install TV Flash I get an error: 9.100. Does anyone know what I have to do to correct this?

Understood, however the question remains... WHY? We can run our 'paid' subscriptions on PC/Mac/iPhones without a country restriction, why only on FireCore ATV is the country restricted?
