Happy tax season! Ok, maybe there's nothing very 'happy' about filing taxes, but to help cheer you up we have a fresh version of Media Player for you.

What's new in version 0.3?

  • Added 'Favorites' section
  • Added support for 'xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/folder' shares
  • Added individual photo browsing and viewing
  • Improved photo slideshows
  • Improved memory management during slideshows
  • Resolved conflicts with XBMC
  • Minor UI fixes

How do I add folders to the Favorites menu?

Adding favorites provides quick access to the files/folders you use most.

  1. Locate the folder to be 'favorited'.
  2. Highlight the folder and press/hold the center select button.
  3. Select the 'Add to Favorites' option.
  4. That's it - the folder will now appear in the favorites menu.

Adding folders to the new 'Favorites' list

How do I get it?

As usual, the new version can be installed on your ATV2 through the Maintenance --> Manage Extras menu.

Enjoy!

Can you give a rough time frame?

It's starting to become useless as tits on a bull for me.

If you can't give a rough ETA will request for a refund.

Yea.

That and fullscreen video issues. Strange how some movies upscale to full screen frame beautifully. Others, not so much.

Keep up the good work.

Really, WHO CARES ABOUT MEDIA PLAYER, when the ability to play h.264 videos ala ClicktoFlash style via CouchSurfer does not work!

Make CouchSurfer able to play videos here from the MP4's that are there from Flash alternatives!

Didn't mp3 playback work in the 1st version? If I try to browser to a folder containing music files, i get a message saying that no files are available for playback. would have loved to use the "play as playlist" function on my music folders!

Still only AFP support?

Submitted by Pytek on April 16, 2011 - 11:07pm

Ok good work once again but here's my observation and experience with the latest update.

First lets check off changes from last time.....(Media 0.2 Release)

1.  Stuttering in .mov, mpeg, .mpeg2, .avi videos I tested so far - No improvement Stuttering Still Present

2.  Via the Media Player, Photos in folders are empty and it says 'There are no items for playback" - Improvement in this area, Items play but a few bugs. Please see 1 - 3 under media player 0.3 bug report below

3.  Photo slideshow not working - No improvements, Please see 1 - 3 under media player 0.3 bug report below

4.  For some reason navigation via the iphone becomes jittery as the remote app on my phone stops responding well after the stuttering issue experienced in (1) above.  Improvements

5.  Cant Play any music file whatsoever through the Media Player - No improvements, neither can you see any audio file in the folders

Media Player 0.3 Bug Reports

1.  When trying to view individual pictures in new folders, the atv remains on "loading" and this carries on for so long, it seemed it wont show any picture. Once it did however, I noticed that on second attempt at viewing pictures any of the folders tested (perhaps after loading them into memory) the timing of viewing the pictures greatly improved. When you do move to other things to watch say a movie and come back to watch a slideshow, its the same process of endless loading gain. Same with a reboot.

My conclusion is that it basically takes a while to load these pictures into memory. Any chance the speed could be improved?

I do love the page peel effect when viewing photos individually, NICE! Any chance also for people to specify which transition they would like for individual picture viewing?

2.  The picture slideshows play well from the enclosing folder level, but doesn't play from the picture listings inside the folder. It doesnt also respond until after a few seconds of loading again (this seemed like eternity....and all the while showing "loading...."). In one of my tests it took me 110 seconds to load a folder with 96 pictures in it into memory before actually viewing the contents.

3.  The slideshow effect seemed to be that in the default the slideshow settings. Any chance we could directly choose transitions at the containing folder levels? Perhaps a form of custom slideshow settings therein (just like your Play slideshow, Add to favourites and Cancel dialogue box you introduced by pressing and holding enter for close to 2 seconds). It is a painstaking exercise to go all the way back (several steps back by the way) to the inbuilt slideshow settings just to change the transition effects?

Cheers and keep up the good work

Favorites doesn't work. Shows 'no content' message when opening Favorites folder. Setup: AFP AirDisk volume 'Videos' on Extreme Base Station/Subfolders on root level 'Movies' & 'TV Shows'(subfolders with episodes). Shows & plays fine when I navigate manually to folders.

thanks and keep up the good work...

After re-jailbreaking via Seas0npass instead on PwnageTool, installed Media Player 0.3 and now I can play AVI files via AFP shares.

Favourite folders working great and there's only a slight visual glitch when playing files.

Fantastic work! Looking forward to seeing what comes in 0.4!

Thanks for the feedback.

The actual player that is the 'heart' of Media Player is going under some heavy development, and when complete many of the performance/stuttering issues that are present in the current version will be resolved.

Submitted by james on April 18, 2011 - 1:21pm

Hmm, can you submit a bug report as described here?

This should help us track down what is going on.

Which tool was used to jailbreak your AppleTV?

Submitted by james on April 18, 2011 - 1:22pm

Yes, better support for HD files is one of the top features we're currently working on.

Submitted by james on April 18, 2011 - 1:22pm

Yes, for now only AFP streaming is supported.

SMB support will be added soon.

Submitted by james on April 18, 2011 - 1:23pm

Was Seas0nPass used to jailbreak your AppleTV?

Submitted by james on April 18, 2011 - 1:27pm

You locate the actual videos on YouTube they can be played (HTML5 version) in Couch Surfer.

I'll pass along your request and see if we can find a way to search for Flash-less versions of the same video.

Submitted by james on April 18, 2011 - 1:28pm

We're hoping to have SMB support available in the coming weeks.

Stay tuned.

SeasonPass. I have two ATV's; one is tethered JB the other is untethered. They both work (or in the case of Favorites, don't work) the same. My saved share is an AirDisk AFP volume with Movies & TV subfolders. Every other function works fine although occassionally I have to back out  one step & re-navigate to the folder to see content. Thanks.

Does anyone know if Media Player 0.3 plays MMS streams ?

Submitted by Anon on April 20, 2011 - 2:12am

Hey Firecore,

Can we expect something like a VPN client so we can use Netflix and other IP-Location-based stuff on ATV2G ?

Submitted by tobyc.99287 on April 21, 2011 - 9:18am

720p mkv and avi cause memory low error and cancel playback. SD files stutter.

Submitted by james on April 22, 2011 - 11:18am

This is a known issue, and should be resolved soon.

Submitted by james on April 22, 2011 - 11:19am

Does your Netgear setup support AFP? If not, it most likely supports SMB which will be available soon.
