We are pleased to announce the release aTV Flash (black) Release Candidate 1 (RC1) for the 2nd generation AppleTV. RC1 is a major update for aTV Flash (black) and adds a number of exciting new features include a brand new 'grid view' browsing mode, huge subtitle related improvements, and countless other performance and playback related improvements.

Keep reading to learn more about what's new.

All-New Browsing Options

We've added an all-new grid view which allows you to browse through media by simply viewing a grid of posters, instead of a list.

From the grid view you can press the center (select) button to get more details about the movie through the 'Pre-Playack Screen' or if you're in a hurry just press play/pause to start the movie right away.

The list view has also gotten a healthy overhaul as well. Movies and TV Shows are now listed using the prettier 'fetched' name instead of the actual filename. Additionally metadata is fetched and cached in bulk, so there's no more waiting for cover art and metadata to load.

Note: You can switch between the Grid and List views through the Media --> Settings menu.

Great news. Just hoping you guys save some love for the 1st Generation Apple TV.

Submitted by Anon on October 27, 2011 - 2:18pm

Do you have to be running 4.4 firmware to install this beautiful update?

Submitted by james on October 27, 2011 - 2:19pm

TV Shows are supported as well. :)

Submitted by james on October 27, 2011 - 2:20pm

AppleTV 4.2 or later. :)

Submitted by Anon on October 27, 2011 - 2:20pm

Still no option to stretch 4:3 media to widescreen? Any plans in near future.

Submitted by Anon on October 27, 2011 - 2:22pm

I suppose XBMX and Plex are now functioning?

What is the process for installing RC1 on an AppleTV which has not yet been upgraded to new Apple firmware.

Do I need to upgrade the Apple firmware first?

Submitted by Anon on October 27, 2011 - 2:23pm

And is it tethered if I update?

Submitted by Anon on October 27, 2011 - 2:23pm

Hi there. Do we need to update our Apple TV firmware via iTunes to ios5 before applying this update to get airplay etc?

Submitted by tm@hemljuvahem.se on October 27, 2011 - 2:24pm

I don't get it. Where do you store your movies? External Hard drive? On USB? Or on basestation?

Submitted by james on October 27, 2011 - 2:25pm

Nope. RC1 just requires AppleT 4.2 or later. (post updated)

Submitted by james on October 27, 2011 - 2:26pm

RC1 can be installed through the Maintenance --> Manage Extras menu as long as you're running AppleTV 4.2 or later.

No changes for Plex or XBMC are included in RC1.

Media can be streamed from a Mac, PC or NAS drive.

Details on setting up MP to connect to one of these devices can be found here: http://support.firecore.com/entries/20322512-c...

Ok, cool. Sorry dumb question number 2, I'm not seeing an option to update under maintenance>manage extras. Is it the actual maintenance tab that needs to be clicked for update? I've done this, re-leaunched and still don't see any photo stream options on the main menu. Thanks for your help, really appreciate it!

Submitted by james on October 27, 2011 - 2:29pm

There will be updates for both Maintenance and Media Player.

Once updated, you can switch to the new grid view through the Media --> Settings menu.

Great work and great update with each update this keeps getting better!

Keep up the good work!

Submitted by Anon on October 27, 2011 - 2:29pm

What is the process if we want to use RC1, but also want the iOS5 ATV features e.g. photostream? I'm running 4.3 currently. Thanks

Submitted by Anon on October 27, 2011 - 2:31pm

Are there any details on the XML format used to override metadata detection?

Submitted by james on October 27, 2011 - 2:31pm

RC1 can be used on AppleTV 4.2 or later, so you don't need to update the AppleTV to install it.

However, if you would like to update the AppleTV to 4.4.2 take advantage of Apple's new Photo Stream feature you can use Seas0nPass.

You would need to update your aTV2 to 4.4+, jailbreak and install firecore on top.

Submitted by LarryEeles on October 27, 2011 - 2:35pm

Great news, but I still have problems streaming .m4v files. They buffer a lot and make it un watchable... And we're only talking 10 min show. Can you help. Also Isis there any way to make the back up work while buffering... It's just annoying. Smile

Thanks

Where do i find plex? do i have to manually install it?

Submitted by james on October 27, 2011 - 2:39pm

This is planned, though no ETA just yet.

Submitted by Anon on October 27, 2011 - 2:43pm

Anyone having an issue with loading metadata ? My ATV2 reports Running low on memory and then restarts

Submitted by Mayhem SWE on October 27, 2011 - 2:43pm

Very nice update! The new grid view however would be much more useful if one was able to select views per bookmark, so that one could use the grid view when browsing the feature films folder but still have the list view for the TV series folder.

Also, if a movie has been split into multiple files, is there any way to name them so that media player understands that they belong together? Thanks!

Submitted by aos2 on October 27, 2011 - 2:44pm

Thanks, great job. I just wait for the FLAC to be supported. :)

Submitted by Phortitude on October 27, 2011 - 2:44pm

Great, AFP working like a charm! Removing Samba now, netatalk ftw...

Submitted by Anon on October 27, 2011 - 2:48pm

So if I want to update my aTV to the latest version 4.4.2 and want to jailbreak using seasonpass. Is it still tethered? If so... Do you have any idea as to when an untethered jailbreak might be available?

Submitted by james on October 27, 2011 - 2:49pm

If you're running 4.3 or earlier Plex can be installed through the Manage Extras menu.

Plex is not yet supported on 4.4 and later.

great upgrade, really great update. But now you got to make us possible to overwrite any details on the XML format

Submitted by Anon on October 27, 2011 - 2:52pm

I have waited until rc1 for feedback on this. Please add this feature

Request: All my media is stored in a 1 movie per folder method. Sometimes because DVD rip. sometimes because of other data or srt files. Van the metadata grabber also look in files. The folder could show the video image of the movie inside. Please add this to rc2. Now it is just a logo less list.

Also feedback. List view is nice but showing too manage in the grid. Can't read or see properly.

Remote on iPhone to atv doesn't scroll too well in grid modus

Submitted by Anon on October 27, 2011 - 2:58pm

I have seasonpass installed on 4.4.1 but I dont see a way to install RC1 from manage extras.

Submitted by Anon on October 27, 2011 - 2:58pm

I have seasonpass installed on 4.4.1 but I dont see a way to install RC1 from manage extras.

Submitted by seaster8 on October 27, 2011 - 3:02pm

Is it possible to set grid or list view per folder?  Or is it a system level setting?

Submitted by gwpurnell on October 27, 2011 - 3:04pm

The manage extras will only show the apps that have been updated in RC1 - in this case it is Media Player and Maintenance, I think. It makes sense, and also saves time, to only update the apps that have actually changed.

Submitted by Anon on October 27, 2011 - 3:04pm

Will the final release support shuffle of music, playing songs from different folders by just pressing the play button?

Submitted by Anon on October 27, 2011 - 3:07pm

Is ISO 5.0 supported yet

Submitted by Anon on October 27, 2011 - 3:11pm

Wow ... that's quite the list of changes! And 0.9.1 wasn't even released that long ago ... great work, FireCore! Now, once Seas0nPass gets updated to support 4.4 untethered, i'll be set! Smile (though everything works wonderfully on 4.2)

Submitted by james on October 27, 2011 - 3:16pm

Right now it's a system-wide setting - though we may add a folder level setting in a future version.

Submitted by Anon on October 27, 2011 - 3:17pm

Aaii it fails to play ISO files since the new update....all the ISO files fails.

Submitted by james on October 27, 2011 - 3:17pm

aTV Flash (black) is fully compatible with AppleTV 4.4 (iOS 5).

Seas0nPass supports a tethered jailbreak of this new version. More details here: http://blog.firecore.com/5606

Submitted by james on October 27, 2011 - 3:18pm

We're planning to add advanced playlist options soon.

Submitted by james on October 27, 2011 - 3:19pm

Updates for both Maintenance and Media Player can be installed through the Manage Extras menu.

Once updated, the RC1 version will be shown in the Maintenance --> About menu.

Submitted by james on October 27, 2011 - 3:20pm

Thanks for your feedback. I'll see what we can do.

Submitted by james on October 27, 2011 - 3:21pm
