It's been only two weeks since the last progress update, but a lot of exciting things have transpired during that time. There have been some big leaps forward in understanding how the new device works, and preparing new and existing aTV Flash apps to be compatible. Additionally we're kicking the door for 3rd party development wide open with a full SDK for the new, iOS based AppleTV. Without too many nitty gritty details, a snapshot of the current state of affairs is below.

Development Progress

We've been working diligently to transition many of the existing aTV Flash apps into new iOS based formats that will be compatible with the 2nd gen AppleTV. While we're not yet able to test these apps on the new AppleTV itself (awaiting AppleTV jailbreak - more details below) we have been able to do some preliminary testing/debugging on a few iPhones running the new AppleTV software. While this testing environment is not ideal by any means, it does allow for basic integration to begin. Credit for much of the groundwork that makes this testing environment possible goes to Dustin Howett.

Jailbreak Progress

Unlike previous versions of AppleTV, the new AppleTV runs a flavor of iOS. It's not identical to the iPhone or iPad versions, but iOS nonetheless. Because of this, aTV Flash black will rely on having a jailbroken AppleTV. As of today the AppleTV jailbreak is just about complete and barring any unexpected delays should be available this week. Once available, the efficiency with which aTV Flash black can be developed will be greatly increased. Big thanks to the Chronic Dev Team for their exceptional work.

3rd Party App Support

In addition to developing aTV Flash black, we wanted to open the door for others to develop their own AppleTV apps. We've partnered with Jim Dovey (an original pillar of the AppleTV app community) to create a full software development kit (SDK) for creating apps for the new AppleTV. This powerful set of tools will make creating great apps for the new AppleTV easier than ever. This SDK will include:

  • Complete stub and header libraries
  • Full Xcode integration with on-device debugging (like iPhone/iPad)
  • Robust simulator application

We plan to make the SDK available at no cost for non-commerical use. If you're planning to create an app that generates revenue in some way (via direct sales or ads) we'll have options for you as well. In the meantime we'd love to hear from you to start discussing ideas.   As always your thoughts and ideas are welcome in the comments section below? You can also contact us here.

So stoked. Get this thing out ASAP. Just bought my first aTV yesterday and trying to wait patiently to be able to play my 1tb hard drive on it.

Yea guys, ive ordered another 2 BAT'V 's , on this news, carnt wait and if we can run the new Plex version what a dream Smile Smile

Excellent. I'm glad to hear. With an SDK, perhaps the plex people will actually reconsider development on this platform. I know they have been adamant about not developing plex unless there is an official sdk. Lets hope and see.
Keep up the good work.

i hope the original atv will not be forgotten. i still feel this is a superior device to the new black one.

Bring back the old pairing!! So other devices other than iPad/iTouch/iPhone can communicating with it again!

Submitted by Anon on October 13, 2010 - 3:05pm

Can't wait! need to be able able to plug my External HD in!

Either Plex or Boxee is a necessity (or some other way of watching internet television for free, including Hulu.)

Keeping airplay in tact is also something I'm hoping for. Thanks!

Why is nobody asking for external hdd support, and the ability to leverage the perian codec set?

Apple TV2 fans might want to watch and contribute here

I've added in section about aTV Flash black.

Well, this is a little disturbing as quoted from:

http://wiki.awkwardtv.org/wiki/AppleTV_2

"The default Apple TV hardware does not allow you to use the HDMI port and the micro-USB port at the same time. Adding an iPod dock to the side of the enclosure will bypass this hardware restriction, allowing both hacking and viewing."

Can anyone confirm this for sure?
ATV flash guys?

So I have an APple TV in New Zealand and want to be able to use Boxee or NiTo to watch Internet TV.  Howeever NZ IP Addresses seem to be blocked from accessing content.  Any ideas?

Please, please, please external hard drive storage. I like everything about the new AppleTV except the lack of a hard drive. ATV is my hope to get that value back.

Submitted by atvblack2g on October 17, 2010 - 6:07pm

Yes, I too am hoping for external storage and FTP ability,so that I can transfer files to the external drive. My Mac pro sits in the same room as the entertainment centre, and it's a bit noisy. This is the computer from which my media streams. Seems like overkill to have this on so that I may enjoy my video library. I'm thinking that a Mac mini as my media server with atv's as slaves may be the way to go. Guess we will just have to wait and see what the firecore skunk works can pull out of their hats. I'm thinking they may surprise us.

I would contact TYech support and put in a request to be contacted.  They may have a solution. Good luck.

Thanks for all the efforts to hack the AppleTv2. Anyway, some thoughts I had
- The Ability to run streaming apps like hulu plus, tv.com, Pandora,
- The ability to access your iTunes library on your MAC or PC and be able to purchase and download to computer via home sharing controlled from Apple TV

Submitted by Anon on October 18, 2010 - 11:24am

It would be nice to be able to have multiple iTunes Libraries connected as well as the ability to use the wireless Apple Keyboard.

Thumbs up guys, I can't wait for the new version to be released, hopefully very soon thanks to all the jailbreaks available since few weeks now.

I would be super stocked to get my XBMC/Boxee back even if it's not entirely up to you Smile

In short, get the same features work on the ATV2 and you can count another happy customer Wink

Go on Team, we know you can do it !!!

To confirm:

When you connect via the MicroUSB Port on the AppleTV, the device boots into Recovery Mode.

It does this as Power switches over from the Power Supply to the USB Bus. The same behavior happens as you connect the MicroUSB connection to a USB Wall Outlet.

More and more folks are putting media on NAS devices. All of our video from DVDs is on one of our TB devices. Hopefully we'll be able to stream that to the ATV2. Eagerly looking forward to the new product. Thank you.

Have the first gen appletv and love being able to have my 2TB harddrive connected to it. The only thing I need for gen 2 is the ability to connect a harddrive to it. Only problem I have not is no more room on my 2TB drive.

Can't wait for Boxee on the ATV2 .. nice work folks. BTW, have you any comment on the infitation by Steve Jobs, for ATV jailbreakers to participate in an IOS summit? ANy news on that, and will it lead to a cooperative effort, which may eliminate the need to flah the box every time there is a firmware upgrade to IOS ??
