They say time flies when you're having fun, and it's been nothing but as we watch the first version of aTV Flash (black) take shape. The first beta version of isn't far off, but we still have a handful of issues to resolve before it's safe for public consumption.

Read on for more details regarding our current progress as well as a few demo videos showing some of the apps in action.

Installer - 95% Complete

The new installer communicates directly with the AppleTV (no wires or USB drives required) and allows aTV Flash (black) to be installed onto the AppleTV in just minutes. Once installed additional apps (and updates) can be installed from the newly added 'Maintenance' item (as shown in the Couch Surfer video demo below).

Couch Surfer - 65% Complete

Couch Surfer is coming along exceptionally well. Most of the major hurdles have been overcome, basic browsing is working and we're striving to enable support for more advanced web plugins. A video demo of Couch Surfer running on the 2nd gen AppleTV can be seen below. - 85% Complete

Streaming radio isn't far away - we've updated most of the critical components for the new AppleTV and also added a new slideshow layout. A video demo of in action can be seen below.

Additional Video Codecs & NAS Streaming - 15% Complete

Not surprisingly this has turned out to be no trivial task - because of this we've teamed up with a few outside developers to move things along a bit more quickly. We'll have more info as things progress but unfortunately this probably won't make it into the initial beta version. The end goal however remains the same - robust support for non-itunes media (including DVD files).

So, when is the beta coming?

We're planning to have the first beta version available within the next 1-2 weeks - possibly even next week.

Can I signup for email updates?

Of course - we have an aTV Flash (black) specific signup form here.

As always, feel free to share your comments below.

I am more interested about the possibility to connect to an external hard drive. Do u think this is goingt to happen?

Submitted by Anon on November 12, 2010 - 4:08pm

Nice work and thanks for the update. However you should focus full on NAS support and other formats. This is the ONE thing aTV Flash is great for. Thanks bunch guys

Submitted by Anon on November 12, 2010 - 4:15pm

Pandora is a MUST! Why is there only

Submitted by Anon on November 12, 2010 - 5:36pm

I hope you get videos working in the browser. That would be awesome.

Submitted by Anon on November 12, 2010 - 6:22pm

Will it be possible to clear history to preserve space due to the limited 8gig HD?

But this looks friggin great!!

Love to be a beta tester... Looking to develop for the aTV too, so will let you know once that front has begun. Great stuff here guys!!!

Submitted by Anon on November 12, 2010 - 7:02pm

Would the following be available for Couch Surfer?

1. Option to have multiple pages open or "open in new window".

2. Flash Support in the browser.

3. Ability to clear history cause of limited space (8GB) on the device.

I have to say that you are really doing a great job however we would really like NAS and multi format support and hope your development hastens towards that.

What you are offering in AppleTV black is something some of us only dream of - being able to do with our device and to actually witness this come to life is awesome.

Great news guys, keeping up the great work as always! patiently waiting...

Submitted by paulb.39609 on November 13, 2010 - 5:58am

Excellent news guys!  One question, will there be the function to be selective with the install components?

Submitted by Anon on November 14, 2010 - 1:27am

I want two features :

1. To be able to talk directly to a NAS device instead of running an ITunes server. So the abilitity to read files from your NAS I Tunes library so that you don't have to turn on a computer.

2. Integration with Spotify

Submitted by Anon on November 14, 2010 - 1:00pm

Please focus your time on codecs and streaming

Sorry but presumably noone cares about couch surfer or!

Man. Great work! I'll buy AppleTV2G only after you release :)
I promise!

Hey all, im new to ATV and only came across you once i had purchased 4 of the new apple tv units. My question is, do you have coverflow which is more user friendly than the standard apple tv interface? I moved from Windows Media center which was able to show me many covers at once and i could easily navigate through my many thousands of movies and tv shows to find what i wanted. I setup one of the new apple tv units and found the one by one approach really annoying.
Also, one last question, does the new atv flash have the capability to find missing media information like covers, synopsys etc? My movies for Windows Media was great.... i just didnt like having to have a server setup in my lounge to stream everything which is where apple tv came in.
I cant wait for this to be released, i currently have 4 pretty little black boxes that are gathering dust :)

Submitted by Anon on November 14, 2010 - 4:58pm

The two functions I want most are:
1) to be able to play 720p or 1080p from MKV container files located on a Mac-connected HD.
2) to be able to play DVD Video_TS folders (without having to pick out the starting VOB file) located on a Mac-connected HD. It would also be nice to be able to assign a piece of cover art to a DVD's Video_TS folder.

I download from usenet a lot of TV shows which are increasingly in HD in an MKV container (seems they are contained that way even in the CODEC is H.264). And I also rip my DVD discs to HD (for back up)--complete Video_TS folders with extras. I HATE RE-ENCODING TO H.264.

Right now I find it most convenient to watch the MKV file HD TV shows on my iPad using AirVideo over WiFi. It does a wonderful job of converting on the fly (no saving required) as I watch. (Of course if I want to take the same shows anywhere away from my local network I have to convert to MP4 and load onto the iPad via iTunes.)
But for MKV files onto my TV I am out of luck. Once aTV Flash Black can do this then I will buy an Apple TV box.
THANKS and keep us posted!

nas with xbmc support

Submitted by Anon on November 14, 2010 - 8:59pm

looking good. Will you be able to install boxxe with flash player?

Submitted by Anon on November 15, 2010 - 12:36am

Totally agree the main thing it needs to be able to do is stream files like AVI, DivX, XviD etc from PC or NAS on xbmc like the first gen otherwise it would not interest me to buy a 2nd Gen ATV. Fingers crossed you guys can get it sorted cause i have a first gen cracked and its awesome.

Submitted by Tyson Edwards on November 15, 2010 - 4:58am

XBMC would require that it's developer create a port that would be capable of running on the ARM architecture.

To date, (including following the release of the AppleTV2,1) they have stated that they are reluctant to do that.

Without a working XBMC Core, there can be no XBMC or Boxee for the platform.

That doesn't mean that someone couldn't spend the time to write a port, however from the look of it, it will not be the XBMC Development Team.

Thanks for updating your future customers. We are looking this page very often to see the product evolution.

Amazing work guys!

I'm currently using an airport express and a really useful feature of that is using it as an ethernet bridge as my HDTV only has a wired port.
Any chance of making use of the aTV's ethernet port this way?

Submitted by lankysam on November 15, 2010 - 8:36am

any update on 720p and 1080p "doability"?

as ever, thanks for your work.

Submitted by Anon on November 15, 2010 - 11:28am

Will Couch Surfer be able to display Silverlight content?

Submitted by Anon on November 15, 2010 - 2:56pm

Will there be anything to help support when using new with old Apple TV's? Maybe AirTunes support on the new one or AirPlay support on the old one. That would make my day!

Submitted by Anon on November 15, 2010 - 5:31pm

Awesome! Looking forward to the release :-)

Wishlist for aTV Flash (black):

1) VPN client
2) Flash & Silverlight support
3) SMB support
4) Non-Apple codec & container support (i.e. DivX/XviD, AVI/MKV etc.)

Keep up the good work!!!

Submitted by Anon on November 16, 2010 - 11:38am

Any chance of implementing the use of an Apple wireless Bluetooth keyboard on the Apple TV second generation? I know its possible, ( but would love its use with your software. Let me know.

Submitted by Anon on November 16, 2010 - 3:50pm

I must say, I don't care much about Why not add Pandora to this?

Submitted by Anon on November 16, 2010 - 10:43pm

I have been reading this blog for some time now but never bothered to comment until today. Wanted to let you know that I am a fan and enjoy your work.

Can I use my iPad or iPhone as a Remote for ATV 2G?

Submitted by Anon on November 17, 2010 - 8:14am

do i have to pay for the beta?

I have an external HD (WD Elements) with many movies on it, but, it is full now. I have to buy a news one, but which one should i buy (I'll definitely buy ATV Flash)? I also have a Time Capsule, will it be possible to connect ATV Black with the Time Capsule and can I connect my "old" WD Elements via USB to Time Capsule and another one (which one??) also to Time Capsule?

Thanks for helping

Submitted by Anon on November 17, 2010 - 9:02am

will you offer the beta version for free?

Submitted by Anon on November 17, 2010 - 12:18pm

Why is there Pandora is a must have. Also. is there any work being done on Hulu Plus integration?

Submitted by Anon on November 17, 2010 - 1:08pm

You've noted and corrected the typo in the interface, presumably (couch surer)? I know, picky picky but I'm going to look at it EVERY day, so let's get it right from the get-go!

Submitted by Anon on November 17, 2010 - 1:18pm

Yes just go to the app store and get apples app called Remote. You can do this anyways. No need for ATV Flash black; well atleast when it comes to the Remote control part...

Submitted by james on November 17, 2010 - 1:54pm

Yep, it's fixed. Didn't make it in time for the video, but it'll be there in the beta. :-)

Submitted by james on November 17, 2010 - 1:56pm

It's something that may be added down the road. Initally we will have full support for the free Remote app (iPhone/iPad).

Submitted by james on November 17, 2010 - 2:08pm

Work on codecs and streaming has been underway for awhile, but due to the nature of the task support for additional media formats won't be available right out of the gate. :-(

Submitted by james on November 17, 2010 - 2:10pm

Yep - the base install will only consist of the Maintenance item. From there any of the components can be easily installed or removed.

Submitted by james on November 17, 2010 - 2:11pm

We've got a long list of features we're working to add - this is only the beginning. ;-)

Submitted by james on November 17, 2010 - 2:12pm

We chose for a few reasons. 1. Avaialble outside the US, 2. Broad feature set, and 3. Robust API support for developers. Integrating Pandora would have taken much longer, and would be missing many visual features that the app currently has.

Submitted by xtrne on November 17, 2010 - 4:14pm

Hi there, I bought the ATV2, but cannot do anything with it. When I attempted to use the Pwnage tool, it just does nothing at the stage after creating the ipsw file. Says connect to usb, I am connected, but it cannot see the ATV2. iTunes cannot see it. I do not know whether I am doing anything wrong or not. I cannot have the usb and the HDMI in at the same time, as the connectors are too thick.

Any assistance would be appreciated, as I really want to install ATV flash, and hopefully get more functionality out of this little box.

Submitted by Anon on November 17, 2010 - 7:54pm

I am curious about the Installer. Have you discovered a new exploit for the ATV2? I am not aware of a method that can jailbreak the Apple TV via an installer at the moment... Can you elaborate a bit on the subject? Is there a risk that Apple might block your method via an iOS upgrade?

Great work by the way. Looking forward to beta test your application.

Submitted by Anon on November 17, 2010 - 9:28pm

I'm really looking forward to ATV Black support, but I'm in Australia. Do you currently support PAL AppleTV's ? Will that come immediatly for ATV Black, or does it require extra work? Are there any other reasons why your product wouldn't just work on an Australian-purchased ATV Black ?

Also free to air (DVB-T) is very important to me, and i have a Mac in the same room as the TV. If you could support Elgato EyeTV recorded files (please without their turbo product) and play them over ethernet that would be fantastic.

Submitted by Anon on November 17, 2010 - 11:48pm

Umm, because is BETTER than Pandora. just sayin'
