Merry Christmas Eve! Hopefully by now you've got all your holiday shopping done, but if not, the new AppleTV is becoming a more appealing option with each passing day. Imagine a single, easy to use (sub $100) device that provides unrestricted access to all your current media along with new content from services like Netflix, and the iTunes Store. Excited yet? We sure are.

We'll be taking a few days off during the holidays, but wanted to share what we've been up to over the past few weeks. Read on for the latest details as well as a new teaser video.

Additional Codecs

We've made exceptional progress towards creating a new hybrid player app that will enable access to a wide range of media formats that are not normally supported on the AppleTV. This new player will provide a mix of hardware and software decoding, providing seamless access to additional media types through the native AppleTV menus.

As of this writing we have the following media types working on the AppleTV.

  • Video: H.263, H.264, Windows Media Video, DivX, XviD
  • Audio: MP3, Windows Media Audio, AAC, AC3, PCM
  • Containers: mp4, mkv, m4v, flv, avi, mov, vob, wmv

There is still a fair amount of work to do before this feature is ready for beta testing, but many of the most challenging hurdles have already been overcome.

Additionally, because the storage capacity of the AppleTV is extremely limited (only 8GB) we're also working to enable direct network streaming. This will allow you to browse and play files stored on your Mac/PC as well as most NAS devices without the need for iTunes.

Below is a new teaser demo that showcases native DVD (VOB) file playback on the 2nd gen AppleTV. This feature is still a bit rough as we have yet to add many of the niceties such as chapter navigation, menus and special features, but it provides an exciting glimpse of what's soon to come.

Happy Holidays :-)

Comments are welcome below.

Submitted by james on December 24, 2010 - 11:55am

Vimeo's HTML5 video player is currently working through Couch Surfer Pro, which is included in the current aTV Flash (black) beta.

Submitted by franciscon.1377 on December 24, 2010 - 12:04pm

first at all, Merry christmas for your team.

Congratulations for the made progress and I hopefully want to test those new features, go on!!!
Airplay and airflick would be possible integrate them?
Vimeo would be a great feature too, but like a native option.

Submitted by Anon on December 24, 2010 - 3:03pm

Merry Christmas! Enjoy a well deserved break.

Is there any plan to include a VPN client on the ATV (Black)?

Submitted by Anon on December 24, 2010 - 4:48pm

yay! also is there a plan to ever have boxee on the atv2?

Submitted by Anon on December 24, 2010 - 6:02pm

Hi! Great progress. well done!
what about subtitles support?

Submitted by Anon on December 24, 2010 - 10:56pm

Yes. For people living outside USA it will be excellent to have the possibility of setting up a VPN. Is it possible?
Also, some way to read SRT subtitles?

Good work.

Submitted by Anon on December 24, 2010 - 11:14pm

What about plugging in an external usb drive?
Will this be supported so streaming isn't the only option?

Submitted by Anon on December 25, 2010 - 3:05am

Excellent - can't wait for this!
Please let the player be able to read iso's directly from a NAS - I prefer to rip my movies to .iso, that way I can burn them again later on if the need should arise.

Submitted by rongqit.70859 on December 25, 2010 - 6:08am

Is it possible to play most 720P mkv files in future?

Submitted by Majestic on December 25, 2010 - 7:00am

Please James, give us an ETA on this "Additional Codecs" Feature in beta. I cant wait for it!

Submitted by LCGI on December 25, 2010 - 12:31pm

What about the ver 4.1 JAILBREAK ?

Submitted by Richeselord on December 25, 2010 - 3:36pm

My iTunes Library is in a hard drive attached to my Apple Extreme. Will AppleTV2 with aTV Flash be able to read these files on this drive without the need for a computer or iTunes in the loop?

Submitted by Anon on December 25, 2010 - 11:34pm

keep up the great work and enjoy your time off!!

Submitted by Anon on December 26, 2010 - 6:35am

I would love to know this as well, same setup I am having.

Submitted by Anon on December 26, 2010 - 9:52am

Yes!, subtitles please :D

Submitted by MrNarwhal on December 26, 2010 - 2:07pm

+1000 to micro-usb support.

Would love to be able to plug in my 2TB external into the AppleTV...

Submitted by Bluntman on December 26, 2010 - 5:05pm

Still can't Jailbreak...need that update for us new owners. So my $20 is a waste right now.

Submitted by kakadekar on December 26, 2010 - 7:45pm

Same with me and I have contacted firecore waiting for the responce

Submitted by malcolmf.490710 on December 26, 2010 - 11:14pm

Still need a Windows 7 Jailbreak for 4.2 Apple TV. My $20 is earning interest for Firecore and not me!

Submitted by Anon on December 27, 2010 - 2:29am

Hi there,

Yet another vote for VPN. Thx

Submitted by Anon on December 27, 2010 - 5:02am

Please make xbmc and boxee available as options like in the last version.

Submitted by Anon on December 27, 2010 - 6:42am

+1 for:

- external hard rive support
- conrollable from my PC
- uPnP renderer (so I can stream to it from Foobar)

Submitted by liolka on December 27, 2010 - 6:53am

When will the version of the video player? As long as the weather and what browser do I need at least. 0:)

Submitted by james on December 27, 2010 - 8:01am

Possibly yes. More formats will be added as time goes on.

Submitted by james on December 27, 2010 - 8:02am

Subtitles will be supported soon.

Submitted by james on December 27, 2010 - 8:04am

We're hoping to add external drives at some point in the future. We'll have more details on this feature (if it's even possible) as time goes on.

Submitted by james on December 27, 2010 - 8:04am

We're planning to add support for ISOs as well. :-)

Submitted by james on December 27, 2010 - 8:05am

Yes, most 720p MKV files will be supported. A demo of this in action can be seen here.

Submitted by james on December 27, 2010 - 8:07am

Initially this streaming feature will be for non-iTunes media (MKV, AVI, DVD files etc...). We may look at adding support for iTunes media at some point down the road.

Submitted by james on December 27, 2010 - 8:10am

Unfortunately there's no jailbreak for Mac or PC for the 4.1.1 AppleTV software. The iPhone Dev Team has stated their new jailbreak should be available soon.

Just FYI - your aTV Flash (black) license period will be reset once the final version is released. The extra time you receive during the beta phase is available as a free bonus.

Submitted by james on December 27, 2010 - 8:13am

No ETA yet unfortunately. We're working at an exhaustive pace to get this ready, and are planning to roll this out to beta testers as soon as we possibly can.

Submitted by Anon on December 27, 2010 - 9:15am

i don't get he point of DVD playback on atv? it would be more work for me to put a dvd in my mac then go to my tv and run it instead of running it through my bluray player attached to my tv.

i would imagine that most people will be like me and have no use for this. why don't you guys make sure the product works - because i am scared to death to buy it based on all the forum posts - instead of spending time on useless features.

if you're going to do anything, make sure hulu (not just +) and work on atv.

Submitted by james on December 27, 2010 - 10:28am

Agreed. Simply playing a DVD from your Mac isn't a very exciting feature. However, the feature demoed above is actually geared towards playing your non-iTunes media (MKV, AVI, DVD backups, etc...) on the AppleTV without having to convert them to a special format. This allows you to use something like RipIt to backup your DVDs and stream them from your Mac, PC or NAS drive to the AppleTV.

We're also working to enable additional web plugins to provide access to additional streaming web video. More details coming soon.

Submitted by james on December 27, 2010 - 10:30am

No ETA yet. We'll have more details soon.

Submitted by wim.nijntjes on December 27, 2010 - 1:04pm

Takes a long time to get te jailbreak for 4.1.1 !!!!
Can someone push them please?

Submitted by laurar.0158 on December 27, 2010 - 1:17pm

"Free bonus" AKA you have my $20, I have software I can't use. What kind of bonus is that?

Submitted by ericsch333 on December 27, 2010 - 1:24pm

I found a link to 4.1 can i downgrade my apple tv from 4.1.1 to 4.1 if I restore 4.1

Submitted by Anon on December 27, 2010 - 2:46pm

Merry Christmas for your team! Stop pushing these guys cause we all know they're working hard. When you pay for a Beta, you should know you're supporting a project instead of making them rich as Jobs :)

Submitted by Anon on December 27, 2010 - 3:22pm

I am excited for this. I just got an Apple TV. Sadly, this is not released yet but hopefully it will be soon.

Submitted by Anon on December 27, 2010 - 5:56pm

I would really like to be able to store my itunes directory on my Drobo FS and just point the ATV 2G at that. So i dont have my iMac always coming on just to stream movies to the ATV.

Thanks guys

Submitted by Anon on December 27, 2010 - 9:26pm

What anbout VPN support?

Submitted by Anon on December 27, 2010 - 10:13pm

So with atv flash, I can connect a 2TB HD to my Airport Extreme and the ATVB will be able to access the files - but where is the iTunes?, Apologies if this is a lame question.

Submitted by Anon on December 28, 2010 - 5:51am

Yes, I would also like to know what I can do with the software I have been given so far for my $20. I know I am supporting a project, but why wouldn't your site simply ask for some funds to do this rather than let us believe we are getting something that will work - but won't until someone comes up with a jailbreak. Like the rest of the crowd I am waiting with baited breath!

Submitted by Anon on December 28, 2010 - 7:45am

Most of us have bought your software but cant use them without an new jailbrake.
So what???

Submitted by Anon on December 28, 2010 - 7:52am

+1000 for subtitles!
