Today we're proud to introduce 'Seas0nPass' - a new jailbreak tool designed specifically for the AppleTV.

Seas0nPass was created exclusively for the AppleTV user, as previously no AppleTV specific jailbreak tools were available. Seas0nPass allows you to easily create custom AppleTV IPSW files and restore them in iTunes (similar to the existing Pwnage Tool app). Also included is a simple 'tethered boot' option which aids in using newer AppleTV firmwares when an 'un-tethered' jailbreak is not yet available.

Seas0nPass is available for free, and is open source. The source code is available on Github.

What can I do with Seas0nPass?

  • Jailbreak the AppleTV with the latest 4.1.1 (iOS 4.2.1) software.
  • Easily perform a 'tethered boot' (when necessary).

What is the difference between a 'tethered' and 'un-tethered' jailbreak?

A tethered jailbreak requires the AppleTV to be connected to a computer for a brief moment during startup. An un-tethered jailbreak removes this restriction. Un-tethered jailbreaks are are a bit more complex and take more time to complete.

How much does Seas0nPass cost?

Seas0nPass is available as a free download - no strings attached.

What are the minimum requirements?

Mac: OSX 10.6 or later

Windows: coming soon

Can I use this on my iPhone, iPad, or other iOS device?

Nope. Seas0nPass is designed exclusively for the 2nd gen AppleTV.

Sounds great! Where can I download it?

The Seas0nPass app, and user guides can be found at Seas0nPass.com

Comments are welcome below. Enjoy Smile

Why announce this crap if it does not work properly, I got further with the pwnage tools tethered jb last week. A knee jerk reaction all the bad press your having?
Not long ago it was suggested not to use tethered jailbreak as they are only for developers/testers now you come out with a half arsed tethered jailbreak that is not working for a lot of people.
I have a freshly restored ATV from iTunes and your software will not allow me to get passed "waiting for device to enter DFU mode...." why does this work for some people and not for others. Ive even tried the suggestion http://appletvblogr.com/2010/12/how-to-enter-dfu-mode-on-apple-tv-2g/
which means connecting power (why is this not in the instructions if its a solution?), anyway still doesn't work. The led does what its suppose to do, but no go.

ok guys lets remember to read through the tutorial carefully. so some ppl are having problems getting it to boot up and into dfu mode. remember to not have it plugged in when u first launch the application. also remember to plug the usb cable in before you plug the power cord in. once you have plugged the usb cable in give it a few seconds for the light to start flashing. (the flash should be inbetween the speeds of turning it on and entering dfu mode. it looks like a rapid heart beat. once u see it flashing at that speed plug in the power cord and then use the menu and play/pause buttons to enter dfu mode. sometimes it takes a few tries but be sure to follow these steps correctly.

I was in the same boat, for the last 3 hours, but finally got it working! So there is hope..

The last time i did it, these were the steps:

1. Follow word for word the steps outlined here http://support.firecore.com/entries/387605

2. Follow those steps WORD for WORD. For instance, i glanced over the part that states "Wait for the rapid flashing light then connect the power"...

3. Download the newest(december 2nd i think) build of atv flash.

4. Make sure Apple TV has airplay and home sharing turned on.

5. Install atvflash, it should reboot quickly, and show only one extra menu at the end, labeled maintenance.

6. Under maintenance, click on manage extras and install your plex or whatever.

7. Thank the guys on here, theyre doing their best to get this working for all of us!

James, I'm still getting iTunes script error in Seas0nPass 0.6.5 (12) and iTunes error 1600 when I manually restore the custom firmware. Can you help please?

How do I connect the AppleTV to a USB cable? There is no USB jack on my black AppleTV.

Submitted by james on January 11, 2011 - 9:58pm

All previous tethered jailbreaks required using Terminal to boot the AppleTV each time. Seas0nPass simplifies this process greatly.

There still is a disclaimer on the Seas0nPass guide page that warns what exactly a tethered jailbreak means.

This is just the first version of Seas0nPass, it will be improved greatly with time.

Submitted by tonyelbatal on January 11, 2011 - 9:59pm

If you are talking about the new Apple TV 2G, the micro USB port is located under the HDMI port on the back of the Apple TV. You will need a micro-USB cable thought to be able to connect.

Submitted by james on January 11, 2011 - 9:59pm

Which version of aTV Flash (black) are you running?

You'll want to be sure you're using Beta2 and not the first Beta.

Submitted by tonyelbatal on January 11, 2011 - 10:08pm

Cannot get behind the constant error "iTunes script failure"... and if I try to run the restore manually in iTunes using the custom created firmware, I get error 1600.

I wish I can make it work, I have bought the aTV Flash 2 with lifetime updates...

Please someone, James help Smile

Hi
i got passed the Script loading but got and error failure 1602.  but the ATVB still looks like its in DFU mode

Submitted by tonyelbatal on January 11, 2011 - 10:16pm

How did you manage to pass the script error?

I am also sure that if iTunes is not able to load the custom firmware, then there's something wrong anyways (even if the script will work).

Submitted by ckiriaze on January 11, 2011 - 10:25pm

1. Do you have newest version of itunes installed?

2. Do you have the newest build of atvflash downloaded?

3. Do you have your system up to date?

4. Do you have another usb cable you could try?(some have said that the 1600 error youre getting has to do with a messed up usb, others said they were gettin that error on their macbooks, but when trying it on a new imac it worked)

5. Did you download the newer version of seasonpass?

6. Did you follow the steps at http://support.firecore.com/entries/387605  WORD for WORD? The moments you plug it in to the wall and they lights etc have a huge effect.

I kept failing to make it work for a couple reasons:

1. Didnt have the newer seasonpass.

2. Didnt have the newer atvflash.

3. Didnt follow word for word, like i missed the part that says, "Wait for the rapid flashing light then connect the power."

Let me know if it works for you this time around!

Does anyone have a direct link to 0.6.5, every thread that is said to have 0.6.5 is still 0.6.4(9)

Submitted by Anon on January 11, 2011 - 10:29pm

Its all becoming confusing now and people are posting stuff and confusing others.

There is two parts to this:

1. The Jailbreak (which is where I am having trouble entering DFU mode) As per the instructions the ATV will not go into DFU mode by pressing Menu/Play for 7 seconds when it tells you to plug it in. The only way I can get it into DFU mode at this point is to connect the USB cable wait approx 10 seconds for the led to flash a little faster, connect the power cord, then press Menu/Down for 7 seconds and then Menu/Play for 7 seconds. The ATV will then go into DFU mode and the procedure continues. iTunes opens and the restore begins. However after a while I get an error message from iTunes stating "The Apple TV could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1602). It might be because I am not entering DFU mode as described in the instructions (without the power cord and only pressing Menu/Play for 7 seconds).

2. The tether boot process should be pretty straight forward for me as I can get the ATV into this state as described in 1. but I cant get to this step because of the 1602 error.

Any ideas????

Submitted by tonyelbatal on January 11, 2011 - 10:31pm

Thank you ckiriaze for your detailed reply. I have everything you mentioned up to date, but I don't have another USB cable to try and I only have 1 mac. I will keep trying to see if I can solve it. Maybe also when a windows version is released, it could also help. But I'm quite sure it has something to do with Firmware activation or something like that (error 1600)...

I had the same problem.  So I cancel the thethered started the Season pass again, plug the usb waited a couple of seconds for the from flash to blink fast, plug the power held the menu play/pause menu for 7 seconds until the flash started to blink fast.  I did this a couple of times and on the third try it work

#7 in your list is the most important. This is a great forum and seas0npass - a jailbreak tool just for Apple TV - is super sweet! I bought a lifetime licence, too! I can't wait to get this going and I know I will soon.

You know what? It may well be that my jailbreak worked. I'm gonna be honest with you, because I believe in honesty... I went through the process of using seas0npass to jailbreak my Apple TV, turned it on and was like, "where's my browser and Last.fm?" So, please don't laugh... but I didn't actuall install aTV Flash (black)! Duh!! Silly me.

I shall try that after I finish watching this movie on Netflix. I feel kinda dumb, but giddy in anticipation at the same time.

lol

Anyone already got it working without any problems!!!???

Not me.... Still dealing with the error 1600:(

Submitted by Anon on January 12, 2011 - 12:25am

OK ive managed to upload the jailbreak to my ATV. However the iTunes script did not work and I had to select the custom restore manually from finder. After this the jailbreak operation continued and iTunes successfully confirmed the restore, good, um no. The tethered boot also went as per the instructions. I plug the hdmi cable in and the ATV boots up and it looks good. Now it will not connect to my Ethernet network, does not recognise the cable being plugged in. I have removed and plugged it in several times, still no Ethernet. It wont even see my wifi network. I can select "Other..." in "Wi-Fi Network" and enter the sid manually but it doesn't find it!!! It worked previously when it had the original firmware. So im not going to touch my network and everything else (12 clients) are working.

A word about connecting USB cables at stage 1 (Jailbreak) and 2 (tether boot). The status of the led is important. When either the "Create IPSW" or "Boot Tethered" stage ask to connect the USB cable make sure the led begins to steadily flash and after approx 10 seconds it will begin to steadily flash even faster (this is what the procedure is describing rapidly flashing) at this point (Stage1 Jailbreaking) you can press and hold the Menu/Play for 7 seconds and it should enter DFU mode and continue. And for the second stag (Tether Booting) when the led begins to rapidly flash at this point you plug in the power cord and the Seasonpass will continue. I have had times where I connect he cable and the led will flash twice and then disappear, no idea what this means. The only solution I have found is to leave the ATV unplugged from everything for lets say 5 minutes and try again. Ive had to do this several times before I get the steady flashing led and the rapid one approx 10 seconds later.

And just to add, every-time you switch the ATV off, reboot it (with the remote) you will have to go through the tethered boot every-time, annoying as f£@$.

Theres steps missing from fire cores "step by step guide" and they should have tried to be more specific with each step and try an avoid people spending hours trying to figure it out for themselves, and after you do eventually figure it out you hit another brick wall like I have done with the network, si I need to figure that out also. How many replies do you see from fire core employees, or whatever they are, trying to help? not many. Come on guys give us a clue and try and reply to the posts more often.

I have it working perfectly...  A lot of you may not be used to the Apple Jailbreaking method and are overlooking the basics in the tutorial.  iTunes and Seas0npass must be latest version.

beyond that DFU mode and Tethering require specific attention.

1. Enter DFU when Seas0npass tells you to.  Make sure itunes is closed and exited.     Unplug ATV, then plug in USB to computer and ATV and immediately press menu and Play buttons on ATV remote for at least 7 seconds.  I average about 10 seconds to be sure. Let go and within a 2 to 3 seconds Seas0pass will confirm dfu mode and finish the install.  Once the ATV has been restored via seas0npass you then need to boot tethered.

Booting tethered:  unplug ATV.  turn off itunes on computer.  start seas0npass and click tether.  Enter DFU mode same as above.  at the end when it says disconnect usb, DO NOT.  First plug ATV power in, then disconnect USB.  FInally plug HDMI in and you are good to go.

If instructions are followed precisely above and Error still happens.  Make sure to run Apple software update.  If still no success consider there a communication problem with USB and change cables.

I am running Macbook Air on OS X .6.6.

My beef is this-  Once you Jailbreak and install ATV flash there is nearly nothing to look forward to.  The software as it sits is soooo limited I can't see a reason to even call the Jailbreak a benefit.  So what, I get Couchsurfer pro, theres no Flash so most websites come up blank.  Airtunes sucks, I cannot control speaker volume from my iPhone.  I can't even use Remote HD.  I don't see the ability to add my external HD for movie viewing.  If you cannot get the Jailbreak to work, don't think you missed the bus and everyone else is off to a good time...  There's really nothing there to love. Yet.

I had the cannot locate Wifi the first time I jailbroke to... But I when through the Jailbreak and tether steps again and viola WiFi works perfectly.

I tried to understand the process you described regarding the DFU and Tether process...

The LED was not important during any of my jailbreaks.  What was important was to shut itunes, unplug the power from ATV all before starting seas0npass jailbreak.  When tethering ATV after jailbreak: again shut itunes, unplug power from ATV, and follow sea0npass instructions.  Plug power into ATV Before unplugging USB but after tether completed.  Specific timing was not important only following the general direction was required.

Submitted by justsun on January 12, 2011 - 1:23am

1. Your method for DFU mode is likely not being executed completely.  Remember, First, exit itunes, unplug ATV Power, Start Seas0npass, plug USB and immediately hold play and Menu buttons on ATV remote for at least 7 seconds ( I did 10 seconds) then let go and allow seas0n pass to work its magic.

I think I´m off. I must admit it is nice from the Firecore people to (try to) provide a "simple" solution to jailbreak the newest ATV black model for free but remember they provide it only to be able to use their Beta software (which DOES cost money).

I find it still annoying (and it´s the first time this happened when I bought software via the internet) that it has not been properly announced what requirements you have to fulfill in order to use the aTV Flash Beta software. Maybe if you´re an expert in jailbreaking you were aware of the problems but if you just looked at the website it did look like a (besides from the known beta status) rather simple process to use the aTV Flash software. Currently there seems to be no opportunity for me to use the software as I don´t have access to a 10.6 OS in order to do the jailbreak. So I have to rather sty on hold until a "proper" jailbreak solution comes or try to resell my aTV Flash software license (not knowing if this is possible and/or allowed).

Raindog

When are you guys going to understand?

  1. It's quite clear that you have to Pre-order to get the full version
  2. The current version available is very clearly identified as BETA.
  3. And it is also clear that it's OSX only at this stage.

If you can't get that much info onboard, then you shouldn't be jailbreaking AppleTVs.
