Today we're proud to introduce 'Seas0nPass' - a new jailbreak tool designed specifically for the AppleTV.

Seas0nPass was created exclusively for the AppleTV user, as previously no AppleTV specific jailbreak tools were available. Seas0nPass allows you to easily create custom AppleTV IPSW files and restore them in iTunes (similar to the existing Pwnage Tool app). Also included is a simple 'tethered boot' option which aids in using newer AppleTV firmwares when an 'un-tethered' jailbreak is not yet available.

Seas0nPass is available for free, and is open source. The source code is available on Github.

What can I do with Seas0nPass?

  • Jailbreak the AppleTV with the latest 4.1.1 (iOS 4.2.1) software.
  • Easily perform a 'tethered boot' (when necessary).

What is the difference between a 'tethered' and 'un-tethered' jailbreak?

A tethered jailbreak requires the AppleTV to be connected to a computer for a brief moment during startup. An un-tethered jailbreak removes this restriction. Un-tethered jailbreaks are are a bit more complex and take more time to complete.

How much does Seas0nPass cost?

Seas0nPass is available as a free download - no strings attached.

What are the minimum requirements?

Mac: OSX 10.6 or later

Windows: coming soon

Can I use this on my iPhone, iPad, or other iOS device?

Nope. Seas0nPass is designed exclusively for the 2nd gen AppleTV.

Sounds great! Where can I download it?

The Seas0nPass app, and user guides can be found at

Comments are welcome below. Enjoy Smile

I installed xbmc and nito during my lunch break. The only thing I tried was the weather app and it works fine. I didn't have time to set up music and video but will tonight or over the weekend. No issues with freezing up or anything, but I only used it for a few minutes.

Submitted by jhernandez86 on January 21, 2011 - 10:49am

ok, it may have taken me foour hours but I finally was able to install XBMC on my ITV2g.  However, I can see why pleople may be frustraded with a beta version that they purchased for 19.99.  For the potential of this application, the price is a bargain, but not even microsoft charges for beta version.  With that say, I have to say that the quality of picture under XBMC is better than the one on Plex.  Nonetheless, Boxee Box has the best quality picture so far.  I tested Iron Man 1080p on ITV2g both on Plex and XBMC.  The quality is better on XBMC to the point that I thought I was watching a full 1080p movie.  However, that change once I saw the same film on my Boxee box.

However, Apple was very expecific about the limitations on this item, therefore we should not be surprice.  Nonetheless, this is not a bad investment for a $99.  And the future ITV3g may and probably will be able to play 1080p.

This is my review

What did you do to finally get it to install?

I'm only able to install through ssh and then when I open XBMC will load up and then will just go back to main screen.

Can't get to install through maintenance at all.

Just found out why it's not working I have software 4.0 and you need 4.1 or better.

Submitted by jhernandez86 on January 21, 2011 - 11:38am

Initially, under maintanance all I had to do was to install it, but somehow the box rebooted and I try to do a tethered reboot, but that did not work, so I downloaded the lates Seas0nPss jailbreak and I try unsucessfully four times.  I was about to give up (1:00am PST) but I decided to re-start my mac and start from scrack.  I used Itunes to re-install the box to originall settings.  I re-downloaded to jailbreak app.  and created the new app for the ITV.  Once that was done, I tethered the box again and it work.  I re-install firecore, and everything was there after the box re-booted.  Now, the trick is to be persistent and detail. Pay close attention to the blinking light in the box, because the light changes the blick mode to let you know that you need to move on.  Fast blick to let you know that you can now plug the power line, really fast blick after pressing both Menu & fw/pause buttons to let you know that you can release the remote.

Good luck

come on lets get 10.5.8 support!

Submitted by Anon on January 21, 2011 - 3:00pm

Let's hope it will be good for appletv

The Chronic Dev-Team has announced an untether for the iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak.

The untether is demoed in the video below. It's a result of a collaboration between @0naj, @p0sixninja, and @pod2g. P0sixninja has previously said it will not require iOS 4.2b3 SHSH blobs.

Pod2g notes that a small bug remains where the wifi icon doesn't show up. Once fixed they will package the untether for release.

Stay tuned for further details...

Do I have to use the tethered boot method every time my atv2 boots up? After shutting down and rebooting I can only see the apple logo. Nothing else happens?

Got a problem with SeasOnPass, it loads on the computer (Mac) till it get to the end of the download.  I get a line at the top  of the square box (Itunes restore failure open IPSWin Finder)  Have restored the TV2 to I tunes and tryed to reload but get the same failure.  Any help  Thanks Carl

I have bought the ATV Flash for ATV2 - I stopped trying to do the installation after 2 hours trying. always getting the error "Itunes restore failure open IPSWin Finder".
Its a shame paying 19.99 for something not working properly - Installation document is just done for a installation which is working properly - no help or hints in the installation process what to do if you have a problem.
Only option is searching the forum for users having the same problem - why do I have to pay money for problems I can have for ATV add ons which are for free?
My recommendation - wait for the final application

It's works!!! Thanks so much!

Submitted by Anon on January 25, 2011 - 6:47am

Same happened to me. Restore your atv2 from a computer that you did not load SeasOnPass on to. This worked fine for me. I can no loger restore my atv2 from my computer that has SeasOnPass - I need to use a separate computer. I have no idea why.

Submitted by Anon on January 25, 2011 - 6:51am

Restoring from a different computer will unbrick your device.

where is the Windows version???

Submitted by Quinn on January 25, 2011 - 3:39pm

Guess you missed the "BETA" in the release title... Since Firecore has stated as much your a willing player. Firecore has a great track record with the aTV v.1 so hold your water and let them prove it with their version 1 release.

No need to post twice about being a bad reader.

Submitted by Quinn on January 25, 2011 - 3:44pm

Again, it's a BETA but thanks from all the Windoze users for being a test bed. When Firecore releases their long anticipated version for windows I hope you have found all the bugs for us Wink

I used Seas0n Pass to jailbreak my apple TV and had to do a tethered boot in order to install XBMC. All working good, but when I put the apple tv to sleep and tried to start it again, I just get the flashing light and the apple start up screen. Does this mean I have to tether boot my apple tv, every time it goes to sleep????? Anyone else having similar problems???

Hè guys can you help please, can't get iTunes to see my Apple tv 2g connected trough micro-USB
This happend in Windows 7 , when is use snow leopard on à virtual machine THE seasonpass says that i have to select ipsw manually but after selecting still Nothing iTunes can't Find anything. Micro- USB cable is tested and works fine

Plz help

Submitted by cj28739 on January 27, 2011 - 9:53am

As you can see below i had the same problom.  You get to the end of the download and get the error message.  If you wait  a little the apple restore page should pop up then wait a little more and the finder page pop's up with the IPSW file at the top hit on it and it will reload ITunes saying back to factory  settings.  Close and the firecore box should still be their.  Disconect cable and do the teathered  boot.  Hope this helps.

Submitted by Anon on January 27, 2011 - 2:49pm

I attempted to jailbreak my ATV2. The process itself was painless, until it came to tethered boot. ATV2 would either not boot at all, or if it did -- failed to see any of the wireless networks.
Had to revert to the original software. Hopefully the things improved once untethered jailbreak is released; otherwise it'll be $20 wasted on ATV2 Flash -- can't even try it yet.

Join the windows users that got suck into the minimum requirement was a jailbroken device. Kept my end of the deal with firecore but since I'm sitting at 4.0 is TOTALLY USELESS for testing. More coming in the next few

Submitted by Anon on January 27, 2011 - 7:23pm

Wanted to add some positivity to help offset the negative responses.

Thanks to Firecore for giving us the cheaper pre-order option and kindly including a beta version so we can get a taste.

Thank you for seas0npass also.

I'm enjoying a jail broken 4.2.1 aTV2 with XBMC, Couch Surfer and LastFM.

Pro Tip: to tether boot, have power unplugged, open seas0npass, click tetherboot, plug USB, if LED flashes once or twice and goes out, unplug USB & try again. Repeat until you get a couple flashes, then a steady flash. A few seconds later, flashing will get faster, this is when you plug in power. Seas0npass will do it's thing and say DONE. At this Point, unplug USB and plug in HDMI. The aTV should be booted in a few seconds. If not, try these steps again! It works 95% of the time.

Also, you should not have to tether boot after sleep. If you do, you're powering off.

One last tip, if XBMC or another app freezes, ssh into your apple tv and type 'killall AppleTV' minus the quotes and you won't have to tether boot again.

Re: Tetherboot.

Oops, don't forget to hold MENU/PLAY-PAUSE for 7 seconds after you plug in power...

I have the same issue as you it says on seas0npass restore success after reboot tether succes but it only shows the itunes logo. Tried it so many times to no avail Frown

Dominic Tse, you must be family of that dumb ass, living on welfare, good for nothing guy that I see strolling the streets and screaming random BS to his imaginary frieds. This software is provided -as is- and if you can't manage to get it to work: to bad for you. For most people it works flawlessly.
As a matter of fact: the price performance is better then most software. But I guess you are used to not pay for nothing and get satisfaction out of screaming random BS to your imaginary frieds, like your family members.
To the FireCore team: a super thanks for the nice package and hard work, you've made me and many others happy.

Submitted by Anon on January 29, 2011 - 9:53am

That's what tethered boot means. There's really no need to shut down the ATV2 unless it freezes up, though. If you're worried about power consumption, the ATV2 uses about a 1/10 of the power of a typical incandescent lightbulb.

The script fails, yes... but the patched IPSW file is in your home directory. Manually tell iTunes to use that one. The IPSW found in your documents is not patched.

Submitted by Anon on January 29, 2011 - 10:31pm

For all those having problems with ITunes restore script, open ITunes, hold the Alt key (on Mac OS X) / the Shift key (on Windows) while clicking the restore button. This will allow you to select the custom IPSW as found in your home directory. It's not rocket science.

For all of those complaining about not having a Windows a Hackintosh out of an old PC and install Snow Leopard. That's what I did. Be pro-active you lazy a$$es!

After going through all the headache of getting this s/w to install and tether-boot my ATV2, I cannot ssh into it..... Frown
I'm getting a connection refused msg - IP is good, I can ping it - just no response from port 22.....
I've tried the install twice on 2 diff machines.

I think I'm restoring back to factory....

Thanks Joe you're feedback helped me figure out what to do when my ATV freezes. The only issues I have is trying to tether boot whenever I plug my ATV in it flash only once and then goes out, how may times should I try it unplugging it and trying it again for it to work?

Or should I let it unplugged for a little while?

Submitted by Anon on January 30, 2011 - 12:42pm

May you be more specific in how I should manually tell ITunes to use the IPSW file from My HOME directory?

Submitted by Anon on January 30, 2011 - 12:51pm

Glad I could help!

If I don't get the steady flash after 3-4 tries, I do leave the USB unplugged for a few minutes before trying again. It always works sooner or later. I just leave my Ethernet & optical plugged in and only unplug the HDMI because I have to.

I tried to jb my apple tv 2 now for two days. I guess I need help:
Everything seems to work fine - the only thing is, I have to tell iTunes manually to restore the aTV.
But after the tethered boot - which also seems to work(?) - I always get to see the iTunes-logo together with a USB-connector on my TV-screen.
I am quite sure that I did everything exactly as described...

All software on my MacBookPro is updated...

Any suggestions?

I've tried Seas0nPass several times over exactly according to instructions using a MB Pro with latest updates and I cannot ssh into the damn thing to install apps to save my life. Same results with the other well known tool out there avail for the procedure. The research I've done seems to say I'm screwed because I never grabbed my blobs using tinyumbrella prior to attempting the jailbreak. Any help or further pointers for those that had issues with ssh access would be much appreciated. So damn sick of handbraking my avi's to stream.
