As the snow starts to melt here in Denver, we're starting to see many of the exciting features that have been under such heavy development over the past few months begin to mature and blossom. Read on for more details on the current state of aTV Flash (black) and what's coming next.

Seas0nPass for Windows

We're happy to announce the public release of Seas0nPass for Windows. Like the Mac version, Seas0nPass is a helpful tool that allows you to jailbreak your AppleTV with the latest firmware, and easily go through the 'tethered boot' process if needed.

Seas0nPass for Windows is free and open source. The Seas0nPass application and user guides can be found at Seas0nPass.com. The source code will be available shortly on Github.

New 4.2 (iOS 4.3) update

As mentioned in the previous blog post Apple released a new 4.2 (iOS 4.3) software update for the AppleTV last Wednesday (3/9). While Seas0nPass and aTV Flash (black) are compatible with this new version, some 3rd party plugins such as XBMC and Plex are not fully working yet. If you rely on either of these plugins we recommend sticking with your current version until compatible updates are available.

If you haven't done so already, the AppleTV auto-update feature can be disabled through the Maintenance --> Settings menu.

Additional codecs and NAS streaming

Below is a new preview of our video player in action. In the demo a full DVD (VIDEO_TS) movie is being streamed from a remote AFP based NAS drive over wifi. Playback is handled entirely on the AppleTV, and requires no server-side transcoding. Full 5.1 sound is also supported.

While this feature has taken a bit longer to complete than originally anticipated we plan to have a preview 'alpha' version (with support for a limited number of file types) available next week. It's taken a lot of work to get this far and we sincerely appreciate your patience.

Comments are welcome below.

How about making Couch Surfer work with the videos HERE:
http://usaguns.net/patriot/pg/videos/all

You should be able to search for the h.264 equivalent ala Click2Flash on Mac...

Woohoooo!!!! There you go NAY sayers, firecore has done it!!!! Good work guys and a big congratulations to everyone that has contributed to the success of this project.

I just have one question for firecore....

Will you be able to stream pictures stored on NAS drives and these pictures being able to make use of the inbuilt transition themes and effects on the apple tv?

Great work once again.

Submitted by james on March 15, 2011 - 1:55pm

Thanks. :)

We're hoping to add picture streaming down the road, but video is the top priority for right now.

Submitted by james on March 15, 2011 - 1:59pm

I'll pass your request along and see what we can do.

Hey get good work keep coming, Looking forward to see boxee on apple TV2, Plex working well so I will ensure not to update apple software.

Submitted by tobiask.2732 on March 15, 2011 - 2:19pm

Will you implement the possibility to read an iTunes Database from NAS-Share?

So I put my iTunes in Sync to a AFP or SMB shared folder and mount it on my ATV2 and could use it as if it would by a network music library in a normal iTunes (for example), so I could use my iTunes Playlists

cannot do a tethered boot.
the window disappears just when it goes into DFU mode.

Submitted by Anon on March 16, 2011 - 4:14pm

I'm a bit confused. I will be buying an Apple TV tomorrow and I'm guessing it is not going to be at the latest ios 4.3 version. Will I be able to do an untethered jailbreak with my Windows7 PC?
The post seems to indicate that the latest 4.3 version will be installed while jailbreaking and that this will be tethered.
I don't really need 4.3, getting XBMC on it is my main goal.

Hi, I pre-ordered the aTV Flash (black) thing probably two months ago. Just wondering if there is ever going to be a point where there is a stable version of this product that I can just install and actually use. I think the last I read it was beta 3? The progress you guys have made is amazing, and I really appreciate your hard work, but it seems to me like releasing a stable product and then adding additional features in future minor versions would be the way to go versus trying to do all at once.

Submitted by Anon on March 17, 2011 - 12:27am

When you get the Apple TV it will most likely be 4.0 (iOS 4.1) or 4.1.1 (iOS 4.2.1). As soon as you unbox it, before you upgrade it, connect it to your computer, download and run Tiny Umbrella (don't let iTunes open). This will save all your info in case you need to downgrade it. You may not need it, but it's generally a good idea. And yes, if the Apple TV is factory installed 4.3, you will be able to jailbreak it as it is on 4.0 or 4.1.1. If you upgrade it via the updates in the menus on the Apple TV via your HDTV, you may lose the ability to untether your device. So turn off automatic updates, don't upgrade it in iTunes, backup your SHSH blobs with Tiny Umbrella (google it), and jailbreak it with Seas0nPass.

Submitted by Anon on March 17, 2011 - 3:38am

Unfortunately it is too later to save SHSH blobs... The only way would be to use GreenPois0n to jailbreak it (if it is 4.2.1) and disable all the updates.

"Woohoooo!!!! There you go NAY sayers, firecore has done it!!!!"

Done what?

I'm assuming you're talking about the "Additional codecs and NAS streaming" section?

Please explain what this proves? How is it any different than:

12/01/10 - Coming Soon, Enable playback of additional media formats & Stream media from most NAS devices.
http://blog.firecore.com/3371

12/10/10 - Early preview of additional codec support (with pictures)
http://blog.firecore.com/3487

12/24/10 - Additional Codecs soon to come (with pictures)
http://blog.firecore.com/3554

1/21/11 - Additional codecs and NAS streaming (with pictures)
COMING WITHIN THE NEXT 1-2 WEEKS (scratched out)
COMING IN EARLY FEBRUARY
http://blog.firecore.com/3856

Then nothing more until this article? You're pretty gullible aren't you.

Just wanna know, are you working on connecting a HDD directly to ATV? I love it for the original ATV and hope to do the same on ATV Black. Thanks in advance.

Submitted by Anon on March 18, 2011 - 7:05am

NAS Streaming incoming!! nice, I can't wait to plug my hdd to my Airport Extreme and stream my mp4 to my AppleTV2

thanks guys!

I won a 1 year licence last week, thanks to the AppleTV Hacks Giveaway, so I bought a LIFETIME update aTV Flash black!

Submitted by Anon on March 18, 2011 - 8:15am

I've tried both the latest Mac download and the latest Windows download and this version does not get past the apple logo on my apple tv 2. Strange as the version prior worked fine.

Submitted by Anon on March 18, 2011 - 8:29am

I'm with you on this one!

I would love the simplicity of just having local storage. Streaming can be useful but I'm getting sick of dealing with a router - the whole concept is giving me a headache. Wouldn't it be great not to have to wait at all for buffering of 1080p videos that take ~5mins to load? Why yes, yes it would.

Submitted by federico.giampietro on March 18, 2011 - 3:44pm

James, is possible to include "ad block" (or equivalent) into the surfer?

I think that is sufficient a query to a ADV database for any object on the target site.

Again, I suggest to insert the option "bookmarks" when you press menu button during browsing, without go back to main menù tu select another bookmark.

And, please, an option to delete a bookmark!!! Smile

Bye, Federico

Everything worked beautifully ... streamed via XBMC ... in love with your work ... Until I told appletv to sleep ... now when turn back on just get apple logo and flashing light

I hope that fireCore NAS player support Arabic subtitle similar to XBMC.

Submitted by why on March 19, 2011 - 8:41am

Got the same problem, you loose your JB after it goes to sleep.

JB again and set up as never sleep.

Submitted by detlefs.1110 on March 19, 2011 - 11:29am

i have the beta 3. where can i get the new NAS streaming on atv2?

Submitted by why on March 20, 2011 - 6:45am

Thought I lost my JB because I put atv to sleep.

Changed the setting to never sleep and thought that would fix the problem but woke up this morning to no signal again had to JB again for it to work again.

1080p should take no more than a few seconds to load on a local network. Something else is likely wrong with your setup.

Submitted by keithf on March 21, 2011 - 1:00pm

So is this Seasonpass version Tethered or Untethered for IOS 4.3 ?

Submitted by YellowSharkx on March 21, 2011 - 9:41pm

Got the same problem, you loose your JB after it goes to sleep.

I tried several times with the utmost care and always the first test was off the apple tv2.

I wasted too much time! Never again ..

Submitted by why on March 22, 2011 - 4:16am

I set it to never sleep, no screen saver and only installed xbmc and never exit it.

2 days now and still o.k.

WAY TOO MUCH TROUBLE FOR WHAT IT"S WORTH.

Submitted by tobiask.2732 on March 22, 2011 - 5:19am

As I read on most sites, the Apple TV 2 has no USB host. So even if you can plug the hdd in. The ATV couldn't read it out. So I think it's technically impossible.

Submitted by james on March 22, 2011 - 7:08am

Seas0nPass for iOS 4.3 is currently tethered.

Submitted by Anon on March 22, 2011 - 10:57am

Hi all! if any body may give me good advise how to get in it my ATV2 via terminal on my imac...
I tried to do it many of time, but ALWAYS getting "Connection refused" msg! IP adress i was obtain from setting>general>network.
May be i did something wrong in my life??
Please reply!
I getting craZy!!!!

Submitted by Anon on March 22, 2011 - 10:58am

I noticed that Seas0nPass for Mac automatically downloads and patches the latest iOS Version, that is, 4.3.
Since I want to stay at 4.2.1 to use XBMC without it crashing all the time - is there a possibility to have Seas0nPass simply choose OS 4.2.1 to patch ? The dialog in the preferences suggest I could choose a IPSW, but it doesn't give any options...er, help?

Submitted by zonder on March 22, 2011 - 11:09am

 still....Tathered

Submitted by why on March 22, 2011 - 3:27pm

I saved my shsh blobs and will try to restore on the week-end.

Firecore should be paying us for this crap.

worst 19.95 I ever spent.

Yes we alllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll know it's betaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.

2 teams working on seperate stuff and both are full of it.

Submitted by technofear on March 23, 2011 - 3:10am

exactly the same thing happend to mine ... have to restore then jailbreak constantly

Submitted by Anon on March 23, 2011 - 11:03am

Hi James
What about subtitles support?

Submitted by james on March 23, 2011 - 11:30am

You can select a specific IPSW file by holding down the Option key and clicking 'Create IPSW'.

The caveat is you need to have your SHSH blobs backed up in order to downgrade or install an older version.

An issue similar to this was fixed in the new 4.2.1 (iOS 4.3) AppleTV software.

A compatible version of Seas0nPass will be available shortly.

James! I'm using the 0.3.1.1614 Seas0nPass in AppleTV2, 1_4.3_8F191m_SP_Restore.

Should I wait for a new version of Seas0nPass?

thank you
