We are pleased to announce the release of aTV Flash version 4.3 for the original silver AppleTV. Included are some new features, as well as a number of improvements to existing features and core components. Read on for more details.

What's new in 4.3?

  • Added File Sharing (SMB Server)
  • Improved DVD file playback
  • Improved metadata scrapers
  • Improved Last.fm scrobbling (2.0)
  • Improved FTP and SSH connections
  • Improved memory management
  • Improved installation routine
  • Improved system tools
  • Minor UI improvements
  • Other miscellaneous fixes

What can I do with File Sharing?

File Sharing allows you to stream non-iTunes media stored on your AppleTV (including media stored on external drives) to other devices including a second AppleTV (silver or black) or a Mac/PC computer.

How to use File Sharing

After installing the File Sharing package through the Maintenance --> Install Extras menu, the File Sharing option can be enabled through the Maintenance --> Settings menu.

When File Sharing is enabled (or set to Auto-Start) the relevant connection info will be visible when the File Sharing item is highlighted. The AppleTV's username and password are both 'frontrow' (without quotes).

Great! Where can I get it?

aTV Flash version 4.3 is available through the Downloads tab in your account. If you're already running aTV Flash on your AppleTV you can update through the Maintenance --> Manage Plugins menu.

Enjoy! :-)

KUDOS to the Dev's!! Most developers would simply put the old beast out to pasture! Although I haven't updated yet, I'm REALLY impressed that the dev's not only keep this going - but continue to improve.

BRAVO.

  1. Stream from the AppleTV to anything that supports SMB.
  2. Metadata (cover art, genre, IMDb rating, etc...) is pulled from the web and paired with your media files.
  3. Scrobbling tracks your music plays in your Last.fm profile. http://www.last.fm/help/faq?category=Scrobbling

Not this update specifically, but what you are asking can be done by following the guide here.

Update in place yet there is no audio coming through for many of the video files (mp4 working) some avi all mkv files no audio or white noise. Am I missing something?

Submitted by Anon on June 1, 2011 - 8:04pm

Oops -- this is specific to audio playback in XBMC. Video is there -- no audio.

Thanks James and the Team! It's great to know you haven't given up on the "old" AppleTV and am actively still improving on the aTV Flash for it!

What applications does AirPlay work with audio? I don't see the AirPlay icon anywhere in the iPod app.

Also, can you give us non-techies a real world example of how we might use the new SMB functionality?

Thank you for continuing to develop for the first gen. Apple TV.

Having the same problem. Maintenance update went ok but when I try to update Nito Tv I get the message ..."Install Failed after popping the controller for 5 seconds" - have tried rebooting etc but makes no difference. Any ideas?

As others have stated - thanks for keeping this alive. There's life in the old girl yet!

On other points:

I too suffered from the loss of the BBC iPlayer from Boxee and was gutted. No subsequent boxee updates or previous updates have got it working again. You can get it working though via XBMC (which I am doing). There is significant feature loss - no real graphic UI, unable to pause BUT it does work. From memory I had to tweak for a while to get it going.

In order to do so you need to add a repository that has it listed and then select it as a video add on. Google xbmc repositores and you should find a list repositories. Alternatively you can search for the zip file for the video add on, ftp it to you aTV and add it from there. I use 2.4.1.2 and it seems to work fine. There are later versions but I don't want to update due to an update on Boxee for the same app which totally lost it. If anyone knows how to get the boxee version back I would appreciate it!!

Now after all that my question! Like the previous poster I would like to be able to access my external HDD connected to my AppleTV from other PCs using iTunes and Windows. Is this now possible with this SMB sharing?

Submitted by Anon on June 2, 2011 - 5:53am

I'd be a lot happier if they'd fix more problems and add less features. Video format support is still weak - plenty of FLVs don't work. Or MKV, and many others....

This update is only for the 1st gen (silver) AppleTV.

A new version for the black AppleTV will be available soon. ;)

After enabling File Sharing, you can use the nitoTV --> Network feature to connect to the AppleTV you wish to stream from.

Full aTV Flash installer download = ~55MB

Installing updates on the AppleTV = ~40MB

Installing File Sharing package on AppleTV = ~25MB

You may try removing nitoTV then re-installing.

Plugins can be removed by following the steps found here.

Yes, this can be done with the new File Sharing feature.

  1. Enable File Sharing on the AppleTV you wish to stream from.
  2. Setup a share point on the AppleTV you with to stream to (via nitoTV --> Network menu).
  3. Files stored on the first AppleTV can be played in nitoTV or Sapphire on both AppleTVs.

Submitted by james on June 2, 2011 - 8:59am

Yes, with File Sharing enabled you can access files stored on your AppleTV (an connected USB drives) on your PC.

  1. Enable File Sharing
  2. Connect to the AppleTV from your PC using the settings shown under the File Sharing option (as shown in the screenshot above).

Thanks James but I was unable to access using an IP address as per screenshot so to answer my own question and hopefully a post others will find helpful (sorry it’s so long winded) In order to access an external HDD attached to your Apple TV using SMB:

Connect external HDD to AppleTV

Ensure Smart installer is installed and follow instructions as per URL:

http://support.firecore.com/entries/259297-using-an-external-usb-drive-f...

Browse to Nito TV and see if you can see the external drive now. That's the AppleTV part done.

In windows Explorer go to my network places. You may need to F5 this to bring about the changes on the network. Hopefully an icon is there for Apple TV. Click on the plus sign beside it. After a while (depending on network) it should come up with another directory tree of Apple TV SMB Server. Click on this. When prompted for username and password use frontrow and frontrow. Now hopefully you should have a listing for EXTERNAL (This being the external hdd:o) ).

If (like me) you have your iTunes music on this and now want to use this as your iTunes music folder then select the appropriate folder. For me this is \\Appletv\Movies\EXTERNAL\My Music. Map a drive to it (I used Z). You can now copy files to this folder without the need to use an FTP client all the time.

The bonus for me is that this external HDD was attached to my PC as it had all my iTunes music on it also. What I have now been able to do is change the music folder location in iTunes to reflect this one (Z) instead, both freeing up my laptop and avoiding file copies. The HDD is also now available to all other users in my home network. One down(ish) side is that I was unable to connect using an IP address rather than using \\Appletv\ This effectively has now enabled me to use the AppleTV as a mini wireless NAS!!

Thanks a bunch for this one guys. It really is appreciated :-)))))))

NB Request to the developers: Any chance of adding in an iTunes server with a bit more Airtunes integration than Apple is giving in there just to finish it all off :o) ?

Dear James
uninstalled Nito Tv as suggested - now I get 'an error occurred' message when I try to reinstall Nito TV- have tried several times and get the same message and now I have no version of NitoTv installed at all!

Submitted by Anon on June 2, 2011 - 9:47am

One way of doing this is to enable XBMC to work as a UPNP server (go to settings->network), so it can stream media to ipad applications like PlugPlayer that you buy from Apple Store. So, you can watch you movie on your ipad from data stored on your ATV or externally attqched hard drive.

Submitted by Anon on June 2, 2011 - 9:55am

Airplay will work with the Apple TV Version 2 (black) and the Airport Express. You can mimic this usage by downloading the free Remote app for the iPod touch. This will allow you to play on Airport Express and Apple TV Version 1 (white) and (I think) the Apple TV 2

Can you double-check the version of aTV Flash you have installed?

The version info can be found in the Maintenance --> About menu.

Submitted by Anon on June 2, 2011 - 10:26am

Double checked and it's version 4.3.

James,

Awesome that this is still being developed. My trusty ole ATV 1G makes for a great media server.

Are we ever going to see PLEX run on this one? PLEX server would be awesome as I have all my media on drives attached to my old ATV and PLEX client running on my iPhone, iPad, MacBook, and ATV2. As it stands my Mac Pro is running the PLEX server and accessing the files from the ATV 1G then encoding them and streaming back over the network to the clients.

This works OK but can put a strain on the network and jump/skip or fail when streaming to multiple devices at once. Plus having the Mac Pro and all the other devices running all the time to be able to watch on any of the clients wastes a lot of electricity.

I know I saw spmeone was able to run an old version of PLEX a while ago but I never got it to work.

Just wondering. ;)

I've installed the files, found how I access my ATV from my Mac, and I can see movies I've uploaded to the ATV and play them on the computer. But I can't see any of the music or image files. From what is written here, it appears that anything uploaded to the ATV by iTunes is unaccessible this way. Is that correct? Why? Is there a work around?

To stream from silver to black you would need to have aTV Flash (black) installed on your black AppleTV.

Once installed, you can add a share that will connect to the silver AppleTV. This is done through the Media --> Settings --> Manage Shares menu.

I realize the Frefox add-on is throught Nito, but I wondered if it were possible to update Firefox to the latest, or to enable Flash through Couch Surfer.  No complaints, love your product immensely, just would like to have a more stable browser that supports Flash.  Any thoughts?

After enabling the File Sharing option on the 1st gen AppleTV (via Maintenance --> Settings) you can setup a 'share' on the 2nd gen AppleTV.

A share can be setup through the Media --> Settings --> Manage Shares menu.

James,

I have followed all of your posts and don't seem to be getting t the final winning task... Ive got a silver apple tv on main setup with a 2tb hard drive connected running through sapphire I want to shard this with a black atv in another room?

I've done first things both hacked and all your systems installed.... Installed 'media' went to settings then manage shares and add share.. Just get spinning disk till times out? I have tried this with the silver atv on file share enabled or auto-start??

I then saw above worth a go installed nitoTV and I have searched everywhere but I don't seem to have 'network menu' anywhere on it on my black atv??

Hope that all makes sense and looking forward to your reply..

Thanks

Dan

Finally realized that I had to create a share on my silver and then add the share on my black to wirelessly play media. Problem I’m having is the video flickers/stutters as I try to watch a movie. Is this because I’m doing so wirelessly from my silver to black? Anything I can do to fix this?

Problem with Nito Smart Installer

Upgraded to ATV (Silver) Flash 4.3.1

Nitro Smart Installer cannot be loaded.

I cannot connect to external USB hard drive.

Previous version, 4.2.1 worked fine.

Seems Nito Smart Installer is the key to make external USB to be recognized when using XMBC/BOXEE and Nito.

Hope solution comes in shortly.
