Seas0nPass has been updated to support a TETHERED jailbreak of the new AppleTV 4.4 (iOS 5) software released on 10/12 (also supported are the new minor updates - 4.4.1 released on 10/17, 4.4.2 released on 10/24, 4.4.3 released on 11/17, and 4.4.4 released on 12/16). Full details on what's new in 4.4, status of 3rd party features, and how to update are below.

Should I update?

Currently the jailbreak for 4.4+ is tethered, which is a bit less convenient than an untethered version. If the features added in 4.4 excite you it may be worth updating; however, the previous 4.3 version will continue to be supported so updating is not required.

The full list of changes included in 4.4 can be found below:

  • AirPlay Mirroring: Now with video mirroring – wirelessly stream what’s on your iPad 2 screen to your HDTV.
  • Photo Stream: View photos recently taken on your iOS device and pushed to your Photo Stream in iCloud.
  • Trailers: A whole new way to browse and view hundreds of the latest theatrical trailers.
  • National Hockey League: Watch live games. View highlights, scores, and more.
  • Wall Street Journal Live: Watch up-to-date news, business commentary, and financial analysis from leading experts.

Apple has also added support for subtitles in Netflix and three new slideshow themes: Photo Wall, Flip-up, and Shifting Tiles.

Which plugins are supported on 4.4?

  • Couch Surfer (works)
  • Last.fm (works)
  • Media Player (works)
  • NitoTV (works)
  • Overflow (works)
  • Remote HD (works)
  • Rowmote (works)
  • RSS Feeds (works)
  • Weather (works)
  • XBMC (nightly builds only)
  • Plex (not working)

How do I update?

Seas0nPass will default to the latest untethered version, which is currently 4.3. If you want to use Seas0nPass to update and jailbreak a newer version simply follow the steps below.

  1. Download version 4.4.4 (9A406a) and save the IPSW in an easy to find location.
  2. Download the latest version of Seas0nPass.
  3. Open Seas0nPass and Option + click (Mac) or Shift + click (PC) the Create IPSW button and select the new IPSW file that was downloaded in step #1.
  4. Seas0nPass will complete the jailbreak and restore process automatically.
  5. After the restore is complete, move the AppleTV to your TV and follow the steps for performing a Tethered Boot.

A demo video that outlines the tethered jailbreak process can be found here.

Enjoy. Smile

Update: It seems Apple has taken down the 4.4.1 AppleTV update due a number of reported issues. For now 4.4 is the recommended version for those wishing to update.

Update 2: The 4.4.1 version has been re-released.

Update 3: Seas0nPass has been updated to support AppleTV 4.4.2 - released on 10/24.

Update 4: Seas0nPass has been updated to support AppleTV 4.4.3 - released on 11/17.

Update 5: Seas0nPass has been updated to support AppleTV 4.4.4 - released on 12/15.

reset your atv2 to factory defaults, ensure you have the latest version of itunes installed, redownload the IPSW and try again. If this still does not fix your problem, please post exact details of the issue you are having.

Bruce,

Do you have any idea what you are talking about?

What is your reason for wanting to jailbreak your apple tv? Do you understand the role that firecore play in the process?

For the less savvy of us can you please explain how to restore 4.3 ? Thanks in advance.

Sorry for being so "nooby", but if I have a 4.4.4 and run it through Seasonpass , will it automatically default to 4.4.3 and downgrade it?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Bruce1,

I'd suggest you ask a neighbour kid to explain it to you, but clearly that wouldn't help. You need to shutdown your computer, pack it in box with your ATV, send it back to Apple and then apologizes to internet for wasting it's time.

Do you blame an auto parts store when you buy parts and cant get them to work in your car because you dont know what you are doing? Or is the parts store responsible for getting those parts installed into your car?  Firecore is like new parts for your ATV and SeasonPass is the wrench you need to install it. In no way should Firecore be responsible for SeasonPass not working for you. If you arent comfortable in the garage then dont even think about opening the hood of your ATV

this software is top notch, seams like some

thing is as i said before check on youtube
i understand your frustration and i wasnt born
smarter than you but tru videos and tutorials,
trial and error i manage to do it.so can you,
stop blaming the software or the instructions.
until you fuly master the concept of restoring
and updating and fix the errors that come with
itunes when the host file has been chaged
either by third party software or by accident,
like for instance when you choose cydia servers
while jailbreaking with seasonpass.
dont even bother jailbreaking. if you anderstand

I have read through most of these posts and wish the smug gits that have managed to jailbreak their ATV's would stop denigrating those that haven't. I can read English very well thank you very much, have 3 first class degrees and consider myself reasonably computer literate but despite trying several times to jailbreak my ATV using the tethered method, have so far been unsuccessful. If firecore are selling a product, then they do have a responsibility to make sure that it is fit for purpose. Using a previous analogy to car parts, I wouldn't expect to pay for a new engine and have it dumped on my driveway with a note advising me to "just get on with it". More to the point it is a software update and most software is self installing, so I think people have every right to complain when they can't get it to work without criticism for doing so from, smug, self-righteous, arrogant ****holes!

Sorry, I missed out condescending.

Calling people ******holes proofs that the only degree you got is in fahrenheit and called fever. If you bought the software go to their support and complain. Otherwise just shut up or ask kindly if somebody helps you with your problem.

Hi. I've got a Jailbroken ATV with 4.4.3 and have no real issues. Just wanted to get people's options on if it's worth putting on 4.4.4 and reinstalling everything (XBMC nighlty...etc). I know Apple claim 4.4.4 contains "general performance and stability improvements". Cheers

Hi

Just purchased aTV Flash Black. Downloaded Seas0nPass 3, run app and then click Create IPSW all works fine. Then it asks me to plug my appletv into my mac via usb and press menu and pause buttons, the software never finds my appletv. I know the usb cable is all fine as itunes see my device. Any ideas please as aTV Flash Black cost me 29.99 bucks.

Submitted by awol70 on December 24, 2011 - 3:09pm

i believe it may have to do with a legal "grey area"  whereas "selling" the actual jailbreak(infringing upon ATV's EULA) may be prosecutable? however the applicable software that works after said jailbreak is executed,

is probably quite sale-able.

i am by no means a legal expert, but this is my best guess.any thoughts on this?

Finally figured it out today, or should I say yesterday. You have to do the Create IPSW update as instructed on the guide sites. Let iTunes do all the updates (as if you were reseting it.). When it's done leave the USB cable in then plug in the power cable (the light should still be flashing), then click the boot tethered icon and once again hold down the 'menu' & 'play/pause' buttons for 7 secs on the control. This will finally jailbreak 4.4.4.
I need help though loading the plugins.

Submitted by Anon on December 25, 2011 - 3:19am

If you only have the USB connected, connect the iTV to power & USB then try your luck.
If that doesn't help, first push down arrow + MENU for 6 sec, release both, then push MENU + Play/Pause. Should fix the issue. Did for me anyways. Good luck and Merry Christmas!

Hey, this is my first time doing the jailbreak deal and i was told that by doing the jailbreak (i just did the 4.4.4 on the ATV2) that everything was unlocked and would be free. Now i do see the FC in the bottom right corner of the screen but when i go to a movie i want to watch i still have the rent for 5.99 so when i click that it asks for my iTunes account and password and credit card verification code. does this mean that my credit card will end up being charged and that i did something wrong or will the charges just not go thru? thanks

Submitted by Anon on December 26, 2011 - 10:51am

i got it to work, 4.4.4. keep in mind this is just to jailbreak it. you still have to go back and install the fire core atvflash-black.dmg file. all i had was the fc in the bottom right but everything looked the same as the apple tv originally came out of the box.

Submitted by Anon on December 26, 2011 - 12:00pm

Jailbrakin your atv does not allow you to download free stuff from iTunes. So yes your credit will be charged. You can however install a 3rd party mediaplayer (like xbmc) that will play any format you trow at it..

I'm also jailbreaking my brand new ATV2 for the first time. For some reason the process ends with an "This device isn't eligible for the requested build" error message in iTunes. What's going wrong? The iOS on ATV2 is 4.4.4 and I'm using the 4.4.4 (9A406a) version in SeasOnPass.

Im sorry to say I am one of those unable to sucewssfully jailbreak their ATV2 with 4.4.4 installed.  I was able to sucessfully do it with my other ATV2 that had 4.3 installed.  I did download the latest SeasOnPass and 9A406 ipsw file.  I did my best to follow the instructions here and on a You Tube video but when I get the end and plug in my HDMI i only get a fast flashing white light on the ATV2 and display of a USB cable under a music clef in a circle.  I never received a single error anywhere in the uograde process.  I read through these posts as well trying to find someone that might have posted a clue that would help me and tried a few of them but no help.  I am doing this upgrade on a WinXP SP3 and iTunes 10.5.2.11.  ANy help would be appreciated.  Is there anywhere I can download the 4.3 iOS?

The same with me did the update as told, everything went fine except the rstore from Itunes......when i plug it in the tv it shows the usb cable and needs an theterd boot from the programm and then it is back to original state.

Submitted by Anon on December 28, 2011 - 7:59am

You have to do the Thetered version, this means, your atv have to remain connected to the power as indicated in the tethered version, dont unplugged it. That´s the complication with the thetered version. after you finished with thetered procedure unplugged only the micro usb, connect the hdmi, then start with terminal (mac), after every install dont reboot, you have to connect the micro usb and then realize a thetered boot.
If you unplugged the cord that´s when the usb cable appears.

If you're on windows, you need to unhide the file extension and change zip to ipsw

Submitted by Anon on December 29, 2011 - 5:16pm

The software works fine. I dont think you've identified the root cause of your issues.

I was able to JB 4.4.4 tonight. I was unsuccessful last night as I unplugged a cable at the wrong time. I redid the seasonpass process from the start and viola! I SSH'd into the ATV2 and installed XBMC and NitoTV. Using Nito now to install other options/features.

Submitted by Anon on December 30, 2011 - 5:50am

yes windows xp/vista/7 download winrar find firmware open with winrar and find firmware end with zip change .zip text to .ipsw and close winrar done.

Is this with the tethered seas0npass or with the untethered (5.0.1)? Is that last one possible for Apple TV 4.4.4

I've been trying to JB my AT2 with no luck. It has 4.4.4 (3330) version.

After following the Seas0npass step-by-step process I can't make it go into DFU mode .

Any idea what I may be doing wrong ?

Tks & happy new year

I finally got everything working after hours and hours of trying. I was installing the software, and all was going well until I installed xbmc. After xbmc installed, I went into it but it wouldn't let me back out. I had to disconnect the power but when I plugged it back in all I got was a blank screen with the apple, then after nothing...  nothing comes up now at all.

Ideas anyone??
