Seas0nPass has been updated to support a TETHERED jailbreak of the new AppleTV 4.4 (iOS 5) software released on 10/12 (also supported are the new minor updates - 4.4.1 released on 10/17, 4.4.2 released on 10/24, 4.4.3 released on 11/17, and 4.4.4 released on 12/16). Full details on what's new in 4.4, status of 3rd party features, and how to update are below.

Should I update?

Currently the jailbreak for 4.4+ is tethered, which is a bit less convenient than an untethered version. If the features added in 4.4 excite you it may be worth updating; however, the previous 4.3 version will continue to be supported so updating is not required.

The full list of changes included in 4.4 can be found below:

  • AirPlay Mirroring: Now with video mirroring – wirelessly stream what’s on your iPad 2 screen to your HDTV.
  • Photo Stream: View photos recently taken on your iOS device and pushed to your Photo Stream in iCloud.
  • Trailers: A whole new way to browse and view hundreds of the latest theatrical trailers.
  • National Hockey League: Watch live games. View highlights, scores, and more.
  • Wall Street Journal Live: Watch up-to-date news, business commentary, and financial analysis from leading experts.

Apple has also added support for subtitles in Netflix and three new slideshow themes: Photo Wall, Flip-up, and Shifting Tiles.

Which plugins are supported on 4.4?

  • Couch Surfer (works)
  • (works)
  • Media Player (works)
  • NitoTV (works)
  • Overflow (works)
  • Remote HD (works)
  • Rowmote (works)
  • RSS Feeds (works)
  • Weather (works)
  • XBMC (nightly builds only)
  • Plex (not working)

How do I update?

Seas0nPass will default to the latest untethered version, which is currently 4.3. If you want to use Seas0nPass to update and jailbreak a newer version simply follow the steps below.

  1. Download version 4.4.4 (9A406a) and save the IPSW in an easy to find location.
  2. Download the latest version of Seas0nPass.
  3. Open Seas0nPass and Option + click (Mac) or Shift + click (PC) the Create IPSW button and select the new IPSW file that was downloaded in step #1.
  4. Seas0nPass will complete the jailbreak and restore process automatically.
  5. After the restore is complete, move the AppleTV to your TV and follow the steps for performing a Tethered Boot.

A demo video that outlines the tethered jailbreak process can be found here.

Enjoy. :)

Update: It seems Apple has taken down the 4.4.1 AppleTV update due a number of reported issues. For now 4.4 is the recommended version for those wishing to update.

Update 2: The 4.4.1 version has been re-released.

Update 3: Seas0nPass has been updated to support AppleTV 4.4.2 - released on 10/24.

Update 4: Seas0nPass has been updated to support AppleTV 4.4.3 - released on 11/17.

Update 5: Seas0nPass has been updated to support AppleTV 4.4.4 - released on 12/15.

I also was able to successfully jailbreak my atv2 following the instructions posted on Sun Jan 08, 2012 1:05 pm by anonymous. I would like to add that you have to make sure no other USB devices are connected, I had an external HD and it was conflicting with my atv2. Once I removed the ext. HD, I got it working. Thanks for the tip anonymous.

I can confirm that I also have this problem.

You need to plug in your apple tv until it asks you to press and hold the buttons. Once you get to this step then unplug it and try holding the buttons for 7 seconds. It should work for you.

Hi, i just bought an ATV2 and it came with Software 4.4.3, been loving it so far.

I have performed the procedure and everything seems to work fine until iTunes is verifying the restore and I get Error (14).

I get the same error when trying to do a regular restore to reset the apple tv.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I have tried all ways as described below but I can't get my Apple TV2 to enter DFU mode.

I've tried to restart the computer, restart Seas0nPass with and without iTunes on. Connected the USB power cable and then remove it and tried again. I think I have tried all ways.I bought it like 3 weeks ago. So it is fairly new. Could it be the problem? When I plug it in to the computer it flashes from the start without the power cable. But when I press the Menu and Playbuttons, nothing happens. However, if I put the power cable for a little while with the USB cable still in the computer, removes power cable and try again by pressing Menu and Play in 7sec then the light will flash very fast. But as soon as I let go of the buttons it goes back to short slowly flashes and it is still not going to DFU mode.I've also tried to insert the USB, then the power cable and hold the Menu and the down arrow, the light will flash fast, I've removed the power cable and then tried the Menu and Play, but nothing happens again. Does anyone have any suggestions? I have a new Macbook Pro with 8GB RAM and I've updated the firmeware on the Apple TV2 to 4.4.4.

I found the problem. I borrowed a different USB cable that was longer and then it worked perfectly. What I noticed was that when I plugged it in to the computer it didn't come up in iTunes. The cable was a 45cm Cabel  Westen Digital.

Am I the only person who this absolutely will not work for? I am running 4.4.4 on my apple tv and when I open seas0npass to jailbreak it, I select the 4.4.4 version and it just sits there, and never downloads the firmware. So I try to just download the firmware and do the jailbreak with that. But the website that this site leads you to (,1_4.4....)
Absolutely will not open on any computer I can get my hands on... anyone else having this issue?

agreed. same problem here. seems the direct link to 4.4.4 firmware doesnt work anymore.. has it been taken down due to the new software announced with the launch of the apple tv3v ? . i cant jailbrake my atv2 because seasonpass just sticks on downloading the firmware :(

Submitted by NickLee1983 on March 11, 2012 - 2:37pm

Exactly, But there has to be a way to get the 4.4.4 firmware so a jail break can be done. I even got tired of trying to jail break and decided to update, but my apple tv won't even up day it eventually just times out, Same when I try to update my iPhone, it just sits there and eventually times out.

Since the announcement of the new apple tv i am not able to JB with Seasonpass. My firmware is ,1_4.4.4_9A406a
The software gives the message This device is not eligible for this version.
What must i do ?
Thanks Eric

I have jailbreaket many atv 2's in my time but since March 7 th., when Apple announced the new software version for ATV, it's not possible anymore. This seems to be the case, even if you are running firmware 4.4.4 on your ATV. I keep getting this message, that restore isn't possible. I hope there will be a solution soon from the SeasonPass Wonder Team :-)

Please help,...

I've exchanged my ATV2, running software 5.0, to one running 4.4.3.
Will I be able to jailbreak it? And what is the best way to try this?

Submitted by Anon on March 13, 2012 - 5:41pm

Hi, have you found a solution for this?

Submitted by Anon on March 14, 2012 - 6:09am

Many users have the same issue include me.... i can't find any solution to jailbreak older firmwares 4.4.3 and 4.4.4....

Submitted by Anon on March 14, 2012 - 10:27am

Yea the problem is apple decided on march 8 that u can not restore something with old firmware meaning since 5.1 came out you cannot use 4.4.4 even if the device is running it so also meaning when say 5.2 or 5.1.1 comes out we can not use 5.1 to restore I'm sure someone will figure a way around this

Hey Eric, I'm having the same troubles, if I find a fix i'll let you know straight good if you could do the same. Thanks Scott.

Today I followed CYBERxNUKE’s instructions from to get it working on my ATV 2 I just bought 3 hours ago from the store (4.4.4). His instructions were hard for me to follow, so I re-created it in my own words with how to get XBMC on at the end. His method works. Just read and watch carefully:

LEAVE IN POWER. then menu + play/pause for about 8 maybe 9. sometimes that 7 too short... but the update issue is entirely something else. i can barely use my atv. keeps freezin and rebooting...

The latest version of SeasonPass seems to be broken. It's works when trying to use the latest firmware but when trying to use older firmwares it gives the error "This Apple TV is not eligible for this version".

I got around this issue by using an older version of SeasonPass (fortunately somebody was willing to send it to me). I now have a copy of SeasonPass 4.4.4 and it worked perfectly when creating a custom ipsw for firmware version 4.3, whereas the version of SeasonPass that's linked to in the 'Jailbreaking 101' tutorial repeatedly gave me the above error.

Submitted by JonBOY26 on April 4, 2012 - 7:51pm

It's still possible to jailbreak older firmwares. I jailbreaked an ATV2 running 4.2.2 last night! And the guy that helped me do it is currently jail breaking 4.4.4 firmwares.

Firstly, get an older version of SeasonPass, as the current one is broken for older firmwares. SeasonPass 4.4.4 should work for you.

Here's the brief steps:

-Use iFaith to dump your SHSH blobs

-Download the ipsw version that you need (matching the software version on your ATV2) then use iFaith to sign the ipsw you just downloaded with your SHSH blobs. Close iFaith.

-Use SeasonPass (older version such as 4.4.4) to jailbreak the firmware version that you need (right click on create ipsw and choose the version currently running on your ATV2). Close SeasonPass

-Download and install total Commander. Using total commander you need to copy the two .dmg files the jailbreaked SEASONPASS ipsw into the SIGNED ipsw produced by iFaith. The dmg files from the two different ipsw's should have matching file names, when when the dmg files are moved from the SeasonPass ipsw into the iFaith ipsw it should over-write the existing two dmg files.

-Once the two dmg files have finished over-writing close Total commander.

The ipsw that was originally signed with your SHSH blobs using iFaith now contains the jailbroken files from the ipsw produced by SeasonPass.

Open iTunes and click shift+restore then choose the signed iFaith firmware that incorporates the SeasonPass dmg files. If you get an error 1600 use iREB to put your ATV2 into DFU mode and then try again.

I had someone jailbreak my first gen atv. It has worked great until yesterday, it is stuck on setting date and time. I did press menu and it took me to the main screen but now my Netflix, Hulu and a whole bunch of other programs are gone. I pressed the menu button and back at the same time and then pressed menu with right arrow. Still nothing. I unplugged it overnight and same thing today. Any help is appreciated. Thanks
