Happy New Year! Today we are happy to release an updated version of Seas0nPass that supports an untethered jailbreak of the latest 4.4.4 (iOS 5.0.1) AppleTV software. Big thanks goes to the world famous @pod2g for doing the lion's share of the work to make this new version possible.

What's new in AppleTV 4.4.4?

  • AirPlay Mirroring: Now with video mirroring – wirelessly stream what’s on your iPad 2 screen to your HDTV.
  • Photo Stream: View photos recently taken on your iOS device and pushed to your Photo Stream in iCloud.
  • Trailers: A whole new way to browse and view hundreds of the latest theatrical trailers.
  • National Hockey League: Watch live games. View highlights, scores, and more.
  • Wall Street Journal Live: Watch up-to-date news, business commentary, and financial analysis from leading experts.
  • Audio output: Addresses an issue in which audio may not play through the optical port when the TV is turned off.
  • Netflix: Added support for Netflix in Mexico and Latin America.
  • Stability and performance: version 4.4.4 includes general performance and stability improvements, including a fix for an issue that displayed an error when playing some video content.

Note: If you're already running a tethered version of 4.4.4 you will need to re-jailbreak using Seas0nPass to take advantage of the new untethered version.

Brilliant, Happy New Year to the Team!

Thanks. Now I can finally jailbreak my Apple TV for the first time (tried the past few days unsuccessfully to get the tethered jailbreak working).

Submitted by james on December 30, 2011 - 11:14am

Plex is not supported because the Plex devs have not released an update for AppleTV 4.4.4.

Feel free to encourage them here.

I have jailbroken my ATV2 4.3 some months ago using Seas0nPass.
What are the steps to update to 4.4.4 and rejailbreak?

Submitted by Anon on December 30, 2011 - 11:32am

Hmm, iTunes cannot restore... Gives an error... Using an European Apple TV 2. If it is jailbroken you should see fc logo right?

Try one of the tips found here to get back on track.

Tethered 4.4.4 already, can't enter DFU when doing the new untethered. Tried everything I could find on the forum. Help?

Submitted by Anon on December 30, 2011 - 12:00pm

Thnx! Works like a charm now!

Submitted by Anon on December 30, 2011 - 12:04pm

thank you so much!

Submitted by Anon on December 30, 2011 - 12:05pm

YEAH! Thanks a bunch pod2g and FireCore!!
Jailbreaking went (almost) without problems.
I had to deviate from the jailbreak guide on a single point though to get it to work, because at first I couldn't get it in DFU mode. When connecting the ATV2 with the USB cable it only gave me 2 short flashes of light, and then nothing.
So instead I had to first connect the power cable and then quickly connect the USB cable. Then it began to flash rapidly, and I could get it into DFU mode.
When restoring in iTunes it ran through the restore process twice rather slowly, and ended up with error 1602 restore failed (or something similar.)
But even though iTunes said it failed, the jailbreak went successful as far as I can see. When starting it up on my TV, I have the FireCore logo, and I can SSH to it.

Now I will run it for a couple of days without installing anything to see if it runs as expected, before I purchase the ATV Flash.

I would be interested in knowing this as well. I would like the process to go as smoothly as possible.

And many thanks to all involved on getting a solution for an Untethered Jailbreak.

Submitted by EricM on December 30, 2011 - 12:21pm

I'm a little fuzzy on this-- I bought Apple TV about 5 months ago, bought aTV Flash at that point, did the jailbreak and so forth and everything was fine. Since then I've upgraded my aTV software using the "Manage" menu, per the previous blog posts. So far, so good. So with this... do I need/want to do this? Do I take my AppleTV and re-jailbreak it, and then re-install aTV? I guess I don't understand how this fits into what I have now. Thanks.

PLEX?????? :'(
What a bummer!! Still not working??

Whats the recent intel on that in regards to 4.4.4 compatibility issues??
Was hoping the Un-Tether would address that problem,
Are there any work-arounds on getting it to work that anybody might be aware of
with out having to downgrade back to 4.3.3.
Plex consists of 90% of ATV2 use .

Thanks All

Thanks Firecore and @pod2g, re-jailbreaking right now :D

Thank you lkodk ! - I had exactly the same issue you did. The power cable quickly followed by connecting USB did the trick for me.

Submitted by Anon on December 30, 2011 - 12:33pm

Hi,

sorry in advance for the newbee question: I currently have my ATV2 with OS 4.3 jailbroken - do I need first to upgrade to OS 4.4 and then perform the new jailbreak, or can I simply perform the jailbreak (because in the instructions it reads: "The latest AppleTV software will be downloaded and used to create a custom 'jailbroken' software file".).

Thanks for clarifying and thanks for the great work - I also really enjoy the aTV flash (back) and keep on recommending it to all my friends!

Best
EBob

Sucks the world is full of unappreciative a-holes like this.

FireCore you guys rock. Thanks for the hard work and keeping us all up to date.

Is there anyway to save all of my settings from my Tethered 4.4.4 ATV so I don't have to reinstall ATV Flash, XBMC, Navi-X. ICefilms and create all of my favourites, and reindex re-meta my library?

I am sure I should know this having used ATV Flash for a couple of Years, but can't find anything.

Hi:

I just got my black Apple TV, but I don't understand the differences here between ATV and Seas0nPass, are they the same or why would I want to do Seas0nPass over ATV?

Any help will be well received.

Thanks!

Alex

Fantastic!
Does anyone know if this will only work with 4.4.4 or will it also work with 4.4.2?
Last I heard Apple are still signing 4.4.2 and it also works with Plex!
Thanks :)

Well done and thanks! I greatly appreciate the effort put into this.

Just searched for backup, and now realise that's what the cloud backup is used for.  Could someone look to update the install instructions for SeasonPass to suggest if you are an existing use to make sure you have taken a backup before running SeasonPass if you want to avoid having to reconfigure all of your Apps.  Fortunately I have been taking the backups once a week for a while (even though I hadn't bothered to understand what it was used for).

Thanks Guys for the great support for ATV & ATV2. It makes this the best piece of Hardware for the living room by a long way.

No matter what I try, the restore always fail in 1601... I tried the fixes listed in http://forum.firecore.com/topic/4328 to no avail... I can see the new ipsw (AppleTV2,1_4.4.4_9A406a_SP_Restore) under ~/Library/Application Support/Seas0nPass/Firmware but iTunes seems to be stuck forever on "Preparing Apple TV for restore..." and then eventually gives up with 1601 error.

I tried to switch USB port (from recent iMac so there is enough power), still no go.

I tried to do a "normal" restore and this is working so I know the USB port and cable are fine...

Halp! :)

Submitted by Anon on December 30, 2011 - 1:14pm

Do you have the power cable connected? When resetting you only should have the USB cable connected or you will nd up with 1601 every time.

Submitted by Anon on December 30, 2011 - 1:14pm

F.A.O. Anybody getting a 1602 error in iTunes .. plug it in even if you do get this error. I got the error twice plugged it in and sure enough it has new firmware and the FC logo

Cheers guys & many thanks to @Pod2g

I apologize for the n00b question but does Seas0nPass allow me to hide the default ATV2 menus? I really couldn't care for most of the iTunes stuff. Thanks.

Submitted by heretosaveyouall on December 30, 2011 - 1:15pm

Spent about an hour trying to get into DFU mode. Doesn't work. Don't download until they can actually release a working update.

Submitted by arnov.3692 on December 30, 2011 - 1:18pm

Thanks but nope, just the USB cable :(

I'm now seeing the 1604 error as well... That's when I switched to another port! Very suspicious...

Submitted by iccanui on December 30, 2011 - 1:20pm

Plug in power to kick into dfu. It'll give a error at the end, but work. Happens to me every time. I think it's cause I jail broke with green poison once.

Two days ago I bought ATV2 and learned of this software.  I downloaded Seas0nPass and purchased aTV Flash (black).  I was extremely shocked, surprised and happy to see and email about this new update.  I stared reading the comment to see the success of others and avoid any pitfalls if any.  I was very shocked to read all of the comments from ppl bitching about various things with respect to this new release.. I never comment on blogs/forums etc but felt obligated as few  seems to be grateful for all of the work that you guys have put into the development of the software which allows us (as consumers) to do things that Apple did not care to put into the software for what ever reason (for me connecting to my NAS storage device - opposed to using iTunes was important).  As a developer, I wanted to give you guys a big THANKS for all of the hard work, quick turn around and continued support.  For those of you that are complaining - try opening up your editor and coding something like this for yourself (for free might I add) before you start sharing your twisted views on software that is being offered a not cost to you.  Quit being so unappreciative and just learn to say thanks - it goes along way!!!

THANKS A MILLION!!

Hi Alex,  SeasonPass is the tool used to prepare -- Jailbreak --  your AppleTV so that you can THEN install the ATVFlash software.  So you do need to do both (SeasonPass first)  and you'll be up and running in no time.
