Happy New Year! Today we are happy to release an updated version of Seas0nPass that supports an untethered jailbreak of the latest 4.4.4 (iOS 5.0.1) AppleTV software. Big thanks goes to the world famous @pod2g for doing the lion's share of the work to make this new version possible.

Yes. Same thing. Power up kicks to dfu, gives error but updates and jailbreaks . Annoying, but that's hacking. If it were easy anyone could do it Wink

I did the jailbreak as instructed, it worked & when I replug into TV, the little SeasonPass icon shows - meaning it worked - right?  BUT when I try to install the ATV Flash Black software as Plex won't work, it says the Apple TV is not jailbreak yet (jailbroken?)  :)

Please help!!!  I have tried this 10000 x & am SOOOOO frustrated!!!

Plex is nice.

Xbmc works fine though. Opens and closes as fast as a app now.

Alex,

Welcome to the Elite community, you will enjoy soon I'm sure.  I assume by "differences between ATV & SeasonPass you mean ATVFlash"  To allow ATVFlash to Run on either an ATV 1 (Grey Apple TV with its own Harddrive) or ATV2 (Current Generation of AppleTV in Black and not much bigger than a deck of Poker Cards- the one you have in fact), You must Jailbreak the hardware. this is purely a software installation & Configuration which is not damaging and can be undone quickly if you don't get on with it. The Jailbreak process is basically reconfiguring the box to allow it to use non-apple code, whilst still maintaining all of the original functionality and access you had when the unit was purchased. This needs to be redone each time Apple Decide to release a new version of their software for the ATV/ATV2 to ensure all of the existing features and any new ones are enabled. When only an ATV Flash upgrade is occurring you would be able to carry out this upgrade directly on you AppleTV from the menu.

It is necessary to connect the ATV/ATV2 directly to your PC or MAC via a USB cable to perform this task following the instructions inked from the support page.

Once the ATV/ATV2 has been Jailbroken, You are then able to install ATVflash over the network assuming your ATV/ATV2 is plugged in and either connected to the network via ethernet or has been configured correctly to access the same wireless network you wish to perform ATVflash over.

The difference mentioned about Tethered and Untethered upgrades refer to the state of the ATV/ATV2 must be when the SeasonPass upgrade is performed. Tethered SeasonPass means you will need to be able to connect to both your computer carrying out the upgrade and the permanent location of the ATV/ATV2 at the sametime. With a Tethered boot if the power is lost at anytime to the ATV/ATV2 after carrying out the upgrade the ATV/ATV2 will no longer function. you will need to re-carry out the SeasonPass.

An Untethered upgrade means the change can be carried out on the ATV/ATV2, and after this has completed, even if the power is lost and restored, the ATV/ATV2 will just boot up again as normal.

Many people I have come across have run into occasions where there ATV/ATV2 has stopped responding and they have said the only way they have been able to get it working again is to switch it off and on again (or pull out the power and plug it back in again).  I suspect most of those people have never actually read the manual, so are unaware the Apple Remote control has a number of hidden short codes the most important of which is:

REBOOT YOUR ATV/ATV2 = Hold both the MENU  and DOWN ARROW for at least 5 seconds and let go of both buttons together.  This will restart the ATV/ATV2 without affecting the Power connection and thus not requiring you to carry out another SeasonPass for an untethered install.

Good Luck, and once again, welcome.

Hi Guys,

Great news about the new JB

My ATV 2 is currently running 4.3 and jailbroken (untethered)

Can someone please tell me what steps I need to take to upgrade it to 4.4 and run the new untethered jailbreak?

Do I just update to 4.4 then run Seas0nPass or will Seas0nPass do everything for me??

Thanks in advance

It's funny, the first time I jailbroke my AppleTV a long time ago with Seas0nPass, it went off without a hitch. Worked perfectly.

Every time I've tried it after then it's gotten worse and worse. Frown

So, right now, no matter I do, I can not get the AppleTV to show up in iTunes. It launches on my TV fine, goes into DFU mode for Seas0nPass fine... but never shows up in iTunes. Even if I just ignore Seas0nPass, and just try to get it to show up in iTunes... I get nothing. It can't be the cable either, as I've used this cable for jailbreaking before. Not getting any errors either. I just get nothing from iTunes.

Anyone got any ideas?

Submitted by dianev.4424 on December 30, 2011 - 1:37pm

It can be the cable!  I did the jailbreak on version 4.3 with same cable & it worked fine, now when I tried on 4.4, would not work, got new cable - worked immediately!

Plex doesn't work. It clearly says that above.

MacBook Air also has not enough usp power to do the initial 'fire up' solution is

1)Seasonpass

2) connect USB

3) connect AC

4) light flashing

5) Remove AC

6) DFU mode

7) perfect bo errors, nothing

It may have to do with your host file set to cydia. If you have tiny umbrella make u uncheck the "set host to cydia" box

Like :)

I Agree Clifford.

There are a couple of places where the install information could be a bit clearer.  I and many of the the other ATV users are used to tinkering and can often sort out our own problems or know what to look for on the support forums. I do recognise though some of the ATVFlash users might haver purchased after a techie friend recommended it and thought it would be as easy as an Apple install. The reality is, until you have been through the pain a few times yourself is easier to find someone or something else to blame.

I think ATVFlash & SeasonPass more than triple the value of my ATV box and would recommend it to many of my friends, but I would really see my parents or a few of my less technical work colleagues having quite the same level of instant delight and be able to carry out the install without a few calls to me or someone else "who knows about computers".

Not trying to install Plex... am trying to install ATV Flash Black to REPLACE Plex as I read that Plex would not work, so bough ATV Flash Black!

Submitted by ASFx on December 30, 2011 - 1:42pm

James, maybe you should add a note to the blog post above about how Plex isn't supported simply because they have not updated it yet. That way people won't think it's just not supported at all.

SWEET!!! Just jail broke my untethered Apple TV-2 on 4.4.4. Thanks Guys! I used the 4.4.4 IPSW from here: http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=970

Submitted by Anon on December 30, 2011 - 1:45pm

Just run seas0npass -> Create IPSW (It downloads the stuff for you)

Plug you ATV2 in when it tells you and kick into DFU

The next bit a script tries to run to auto restore but it didn't work on my mac, had to go into iTunes and pick the newly created firmware myself

Submitted by Anon on December 30, 2011 - 1:47pm

Completely agree i've had a few that didn't like the cable and some did i've also had to swap which USB port i was using a couple times

Submitted by Anon on December 30, 2011 - 1:49pm

I get this too With the 4.2.1 firmware. It might be an ATV flash bug. What I've done to go arond in this in Netflix is once I choose the movie I want to watch I emediately press play play when it goes into the other window (more option, similar movies)

Submitted by tintin on December 30, 2011 - 1:49pm

With every version of Season Pass i've always had the 'iTunes Script Failed' error. The latest is no exception. This is what I did:

1. Let Season Pass generate the Firmware update

2. Watch it try and open iTunes (unsuccessfully)

3. SP then opens the finder window showing where the jailbroken firmware is (~Library/Application Support/Season Pass/Firmware/)

4. I drag the firmware out of its folder and onto the desktop (because Lion won't let me navigate to the ~Library folder in iTunes)

5. Go back to iTunes with my AppleTV still connected in DFU mode, click on Restore whilst holding down the ALT key and point it to the firmware on the desktop.

Job done.

TT.

Freshly upgraded to 4.4.4, ran SeasonPass, entered DFU, it generated files properly but then iTunes gives me "this device isn't eligible for this upgrade error message. I tried to restore these ipsw using iTunes custom restore later (years of iPhone jailbreaking) and still got the same message. Surprised why Apple is not signing 4.4.4 firmware anymore Frown

Thank you for the new update!

Installed it with no problems, but after reinstalling aTV Flash it now crashes every time I go to Manage Extras... Any ideas?

Submitted by Stingray88 on December 30, 2011 - 1:54pm

I've done this method before... problem is the AppleTV just isn't recognized in iTunes... at all. So there is no option for me to click restore.

Submitted by Stingray88 on December 30, 2011 - 1:55pm

Just tried a different cable... different USB port... same story.

I second the PLEX request. PLEX IS A MUST!!!!! At this point there is nothing that compares to it in my opinion. PLEASE GIVE US PLEX!!

Submitted by Anon on December 30, 2011 - 2:02pm

I tried to install the 4.4.4 update but after connecting the USB cord, the ATV will not go into DFU mode.

Submitted by Anon on December 30, 2011 - 2:06pm

google, download, and use use ireb for ios. click apple tv 2 button and do what it says. you will be in dfu mode for sure

Submitted by Anon on December 30, 2011 - 2:08pm

Could you provide some details and/steps you took?

Submitted by Anon on December 30, 2011 - 2:11pm

Seems that's an issue for the Plex devs and not FireCore.?.

Submitted by arnov.3692 on December 30, 2011 - 2:13pm

Not that either, I never changed my hosts file (and I double-checked it had not been updated without my knowledge!) so the requests are really going to Apple servers.

BUT, I finally managed to make it work!! Not sure what fixed the whole thing but here is what I did:

- Reboot Mac

- Start Seas0nPass, run "Create IPSW" (it downloads, unzip, patch and then ask to plug and run the ATV into DFU)

- Plug ATV into USB port #1 (no power, and no other usb devices) and activate DFU mode

- It's detected by Seas0nPass, it starts iTunes and it's running a script (to load the correct IPSW)

- Now, even though iTunes says "Preparing to restore...", the Seas0nPass window says "Done" or "success", but I cannot actually click on "done" as the progress bar is not totally complete...

- Never mind, I wait for the 1601 error in iTunes

- Unplug from the Mac, then plug to the TV: it shows the usb cable and the iTunes logo...

- Ok, so back to the Mac, same procedure as before and even same port.

- Now, instead of downloading the original IPSW, Seas0nPass directly unzip the one it had already downloaded the last time...

- Then same things with the DFU and all, but to my surprise, the Seas0nPass window says it's "done", and I can click on the "done" button!

- At the same time, iTunes is finally showing that it is not "preparing" any more, but actually "restoring"!!!

- All finishes well, iTunes says I'm good to go, so I plug to the TV and I see the little FC logo and I'm happy Smile WOOHOO!! Happy New Year! Smile

I can't even get past the unzipping of the IPSW file. ON 3 separate Macs I get this error message:
"Process failed for reason: Filesystem mount failed!!"

I have even set up an extra user account and it still failed.
Any ideas?

Ive got 3 atv2's and i got errors on all for my xbmc install. Anyone else having the same problem?

Submitted by Anon on December 30, 2011 - 2:21pm

Try it again. I got the same error when trying to upgrade, so I re-DFU'ed with iReb, and went right back into iTunes and used the same hacked ISPW. It worked the second time.

Submitted by Anon on December 30, 2011 - 2:25pm

Try with a different computer. Something similar happened to me a few months ago and the problem was the computer itself: either drivers or usb power problems.

Submitted by Jinnie55 on December 30, 2011 - 2:31pm

Stingray88, you know what, I also have the same problem with BOTH my ATV2, ITunes does NOT see either one of them. When I purchased the second one, I tried to save my IPSW with Tiny Umbrella, and it also could NOT either the jailbroken one or the brand new one out of the box. I have all the iPhone 4, iPad ig, iPod 3g, and they all work with the same Apple cable to connect to iTunes, but for some reason the ATV via the Micro USB cable Itunes does NOT see it, but I was able to use Season Pass 4.3 along with the ATVFlash Black 1.1.1. (I used my Laptop with Windows 7, not my iMac)

I think it may be caused by the type of Micro USB used!

I've struggle alot getting my appleTV restored. Received error 14 and 1604.

After swapped to a shorter micro-USB cable type B and connected it to the USB port with power enough (those connected directly onto the motherboard (assume also Laptop's has special poe usb port(s)) it works with no issue at all Smile

Highly recommend the aTV flash Black as well. Well worht the money ..
