It's a brand new year, and we've wasted no time getting back to work making the AppleTV even more awesome. As a result, we're happy to present you with a fresh, new version of aTV Flash (black) which features a number of great new things including: video zoom options, grid view watched icons, quick access to recently visited pages, improved support for subtitles, and a truckload of other improvements and bug fixes.

The updates look good, but I'd like to see better Media control. Streaming .avi movies is non-existent for me and it struggles loading even small pics. Perhaps there's a fix - are others having the same problems?

XBMC crashes with the latest release you put out yesterday ( after the 1.2 release). It was working fine with 1.2. Please fix.

ATV Automatically switches resolution to 720p 50 hz in stead of 720p 60 hz. This causes extreme stuttering while watching movies. Maybe you guys can fix this?! It is a know problem on the apple support forum but no updates have fixed this problem. Maybe it is possible to force the resolution?

On the 4.4 and later AppleTV software you can manually set the refresh rate.

This option is found in the Settings --> Audio & Video --> TV Resolution menu.

Hmm, can you send in a bug report?

The zoom option is located in the Playback Menu. To access the Playback Menu simply hold the center (select) button while a video is playing.

We're working to add support for marking an entire folder as watched/unwatched. Stay tuned.

This is coming in the next version. :)

Support for folder based organization/playback is in the works and will be available in the next version.

Stay tuned. :)

Good so far, would be nice if the zoom setting was saved across viewings of movies. Would also be nice if you could apply it to folder levels for Tv series etc..

Keep up the good work

I'm having the same problems with an iPad2 and iPhone 4s. It will initially work for a few minutes, then completely refuses to work even after rebooting all devices. Any ideas would be helpful!

Submitted by Anon on January 19, 2012 - 5:22pm

Great improvements with every new release.

Could you please add support for displaying subtitles on black/empty bars if the aspect ratio/resolution of the movie isn't full height? So the subtitle font will be always displayed on the same position and have the same size regardless of the movie.

Thank you!

Im experiencing MAJOR crashing issue with XBMC after jailbreaking with both the latest aTV Flash & Seasonpass, did an upgrade few days back, believe it was with the old aTV Flash 1.1.1 and everything on that unit is perfect? Anyone know why this crashing is occurring all the time?

This issue is pretty bad... xbmc crashes everytime!!

Submitted by Bassline on January 20, 2012 - 10:59am

For me XBMC works like a charm (season passed 4.4 + aTV black 1.1) . aTV is on cord for network and talks to an Debian squeeze driven samba and/or mediatomb quite nice. Some weeks ago I added a Cisco NAS which works fine too.
After having some problems with XBMC indexing UPnP containers I fully switched to SMB links. With the NAS XBMC crashed when using the SMB browse method but adding the servers ip / login manually made the server available for usage in every media selection menu.

Compared to my first XBMC experience on a XBOX 1 im really impressed by that little black Apple Box / seas0npass / aTV black + XBMC combo. It's not an I7 16G ram but it runs quite nice.

The problem seems to be when xmbc starts its scrolling update on the bottom. I disconnected the Internet, then startup up xbmc. After a minute I plugged in my Internet and all works fine. Hassle. . Is there a way to disable it from Looking for updates??

Submitted by Anon on January 20, 2012 - 1:39pm

With no help from fircore, fixed it myself. It was a database corruption. SSH and delete the .db files from mobile-preferences-xbmc-userdata. Restart ATV, it may crash again when you restart but will work after that. Did for me.

Hey it's a glitch caused by the black out there is a fix for it.... Just follow the steps below:

1: Unplug your router or ethernet cable (wifi)

2: launch XBMC

3: Plug your router or ethernet back in

4: Go to videos; Add ons; Get more

5: Install youtube or any other addon and wait for it to complete

6: Exit back to the main screen and relaunch xbmc

Is it possible to sort by Date for Movies folder and not TV Shows folder?

Submitted by keza00 on January 22, 2012 - 1:10am

Is there any chance that there will be an option to display full dvd jackets (front and back) in an upcoming release. It only displays the middle half at the moment. I don't really want to go through all my movie folders and change them to just the front cover. With over 300 movies that would drive me nuts. If you could include this as an option in media player then it would be the best product for apple tv on the market

Submitted by lassel.2549 on January 22, 2012 - 5:15am

ok thanks

Submitted by dcteague on January 22, 2012 - 8:37am

I saw someone post that the usb and hdmi wouldn't fit together - this isn't correct.  If there's a plan to omit the external hdd because of this, please don't assume that its not possible because of the plug issue.  This is one of the only reasons I wanted to buy the ATV Flash so that I could store my content on external HDD sources without having to stream through non-itunes based services (i.e., Xbmc, etc.).  I simply want the stock ATV functionality, with the ability to store content on an extenral NAS without having to stream via airport extreme, airplay, or an active computer stream.

goto roll back under addons where you uninstal and just hit roll back icefilms working

Submitted by davel.3307 on January 22, 2012 - 7:21pm

You guys could put an end to countless hours of frustration if, at the top of the page, you would simply put a large banner:  "We strongly recommend NOT doing this on a PC, it likely won't work and hence, render your Apple TV useless until you find a mac."

3 cords, 3 different PCs, 2 different Operating Systems = A LOT of possible combinations and --NONE-- of them work.  ALL of them had to be fixed by finding a Mac and unf*cking the mess the Apple/PC issues created.

Submitted by Anon on January 24, 2012 - 5:02am

it would be nice to have the ability to skip to the next item in a video playlist folder by keeping the left/right arrow pressed in the atv remote (now it only fast forward/fast rewind). Do you think it will be possible to include it in the next update?

Submitted by thegorg on January 24, 2012 - 7:17pm

HI since i have done the upgrade, i am having all sorts of problems with timing out when trying to install things, like HD Remote and other items in the maintenance area. i carnet install the browser or anything. It has been a week since the update and was wondering if anyone else had the same.

also, any idea how to get XBMC working, it can not see my external drive on my mac lion machine too.

Thanks anyway, it is running great apart from these very few issues.
