Today we're happy to release new versions of Seas0nPass and aTV Flash (black) that are compatible with latest 5.0 (iOS 5.1) software running on the ATV2. A ton of work has gone into getting everything updated, and a huge thanks go out to Brandon Holland (@640774n6) and Dustin Howett (@DHowett) who both contributed immensely in adding support for 5.0.

Is this a tethered or untethered jailbreak? What's the difference?

Seas0nPass currently provides a tethered jailbreak for the new 5.0 (iOS 5.1) Apple TV software. Functionally, both jailbreak types are identical, the only difference being that a tethered jailbreak requires the Apple TV to be connected to a Mac/PC when first powering it on. Since the Apple TV doesn't have a battery, and is rarely ever powered off, this usually only needs to be done once.

What's new in the 5.0 Apple TV software? Should I update?

  • New interface: - Fast, visual access to all content choices
  • Movie purchases in iCloud: Support for buying movies on Apple TV and playing back purchased movies from iCloud
  • Genius Recommendations: Recommendations for content on the iTunes Store based on previous rentals and purchases
  • Screensaver photos: New National Geographic photos built-in for screensaver
  • On-device sign-up: On-device sign up for content partners on Apple TV using your Apple ID

Updating to the new 5.0 software is not required, and all aTV Flash (black) features will continue to be supported on Apple TV versions 4.2 and later.

What about the ATV3, will this work?

Unfortunately not. Work is still ongoing for the ATV3, and we hope to have more news soon. For the latest updates be sure to follow us on Twitter.

Which plugins are currently supported on 5.0?

  • Couch Surfer (works)
  • Last.fm (works)
  • Maintenance (works)
  • Media Player (works)
  • NitoTV (works)
  • Plex (works)
  • Remote HD (works)
  • Rowmote (works)
  • RSS Feeds (works)
  • Weather (works)
  • XBMC (works)
  • Overflow (not working)

Note: Non-working items require an author update for 5.0 compatibility.

Screenshots! Give us screenshots!

We listened to all the feedback we received and integrated the new icons in a way that should please virtually everyone. Check out the screenshots below for the final result.

If the Apple TV simply reboots/reloads/relaunches (which is pretty common when jailbroken) do you still need to be tethered? What about when holding both Menu and Play/Pause for 10 seconds to reboot, will you need to be tethered then? Or is it ONLY when the power is lost or disconnected that you need to be tethered?

cecemf good news you managed to turn back from 5.0 to 4.4.4 can you tell us how you did it, is it unthethered or not ??
The same I updated to 5.0 by mistake and would be glad to downgrade to 4.4.4 and wait for an unthethered and working xbmc update to 5.0

Why do you buy Firecore to run XBMC? That is a waste of money. The value in Firecore is their media player is faster and more stable, that is what you are paying for. Just jailbreak your ATV and install XBMC and go on with your lives, or keep paying Firecore because it helps pay their bills and me getting media player updates! Smile

You are absolutely right! ATVFlash + Synology NAS == AWESOME

Have tried SeasonPass restore with iTunes 6-7 times now and I keep on getting this error:

The Apple TV "Apple TV' could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (14).

Steps I have taken to resolve are restarting mac and trying different usb port.

I will have to try jail breaking on my wife's windows 7 laptop tomorrow to see if this makes any difference.

Any ideas?? Thanks

I just tried the Boot tethered jailbreakand got the OK successful message after a full installation. But when I connect the HDMI to the Apple TV, I do not see no changes. It shows the original apple TV. And on top, when I try to run ATVflash, it tells me that the Apple TV has not been jailberak YET.

Any idea to what I a doing wrong as this is mu first time doing this?

From what I have read and understand black ATV's don't have the hardware necessary to support USB drives. The micro USB port is limited in functionality. So NAS seems to be the only option with these units.

im the same- have followed the instructions to the "T"...the only change i do get, is the "FC" logo in the top right on my home screen in apple tv when hooked up with the hdmi. that tells me that it is successfully jailbroken, yet the tethered boot doesn't seem to change anything. i don't have any of the new icons. can anyone tell me what i'm doing wrong??

thanks.

FC MEANS IT IS JAILBROKEN! Now you can add whatever you like via SHSH!

Worked first try, very easy install. Great work guys.   Quick question, now that I've updated my ATV2 to the new software, will there be a difference when upgrading to the new ATV 3 ?

Mac OSX 10.6.8...I can not open seas0npass....Is anyone else having this problem?

Submitted by an3k on March 30, 2012 - 8:51pm

I cannot update since nearly everytime i go back to the main Media view my ATV crashes and reboots. This started with one of the last FireCore updates Frown
I only have the Media plugin installed so i really wonder whats the problem. I already did a reset in itunes, re-jailbreaked it and installed ATV black but i can't fix that problem.

Is this caused by a bug in ATV black or is Apple having fun with all the jailbreaking users? Hope there is a fix soon cause this is very annoying. Thanks!

However, i really love what FireCore is doing here. There are just some minor things i would like to see changed (eg. only having the added shares listed in Media and getting the other sub-menu entries moved to Settings or Maintenance) but in general ATV black is awesome and i definitely will renew my subscription.

Submitted by Anon on March 30, 2012 - 8:59pm

aTV Black's Media Player + Time Capsule Hard drive full of movie backups = awesome!

Submitted by an3k on March 30, 2012 - 8:59pm

ATV 3 is a new hardware, you cannot update to it. you need to buy a new AppleTV to get it.

The only difference between ATV2 and ATV3 is:

ATV3 got a better CPU and perhaps more RAM

ATV3 officially supports 1920x1080 (iTunes, HDMI Output). Sure, with ATV2 you already can watch 1920x1080 files using Media plugin but you cannot scroll in time because after start playing again it will "Buffer" forever.

If you can life with 1280x720 Output and not being able to fast forward/reverse in 1920x1080 movies, save your money Smile

Submitted by jnist1957 on March 30, 2012 - 8:59pm

I finally have success. I had to Jailbreak two times, once untethered with iTunes completing a restore, then tethered. After that point, aTV Flash finally loaded and everything works fine.

Being that it's tethered, as soon as I unplug this ATV2, I'll lose everything I did, huh?

aTV Flash + ATV2 + QNAP-NAS --> it rocks !!!!

This product looks great, But i only have the new TV3.
Hope that the TV3 update is soon to follow!

Submitted by Anon on March 30, 2012 - 9:28pm

Only reason XBMC & Plex isn't working yet is because firecore Rocks in their speed and delivery of updates! I would expect at some point those authors will play catch up. Major props to firecore, i knew that lifetime purchase was a good decision when I saw your product!

I will wait for untethered, but I am impressed that this update came out as soon as it did.

For my needs, haven't used xbmc since media player 1.2 came out. Not missing it one bit!

No what is worse is reading your post! assumption is the mother of all f*** ups. Just think reading a few blog lines could have saved us hearing about your dumb ass mistakes.

Just say "good job firecore" and sit down!

Submitted by Anon on March 30, 2012 - 10:24pm

thank you guys, a few hours ago i got a comment regarding the supported seas0npass version to jailbreak 5.0. I was gonna reply it would be released soon Smile

Submitted by Anon on March 30, 2012 - 10:40pm

I too use it mainly for Plex, but as the author stated:

"Plex (not working) Note: Non-working items require an author update for 5.0 compatibility."

It is not fireCore's responsibility to maintain an update for Plex, that falls upon the creators and maintainers of Plex's source code. Head over to their forums for a better idea on the matter.

I just downloaded the new seas0npass click right in creat a new ipk then selected 4.4.4

After the iTunes was done restoring I got an error message, but after plugging back my apple tv to my tv it worked and it was back to 4.4.4

Submitted by jonathad on March 30, 2012 - 11:47pm

FInally got it working, had to update / restore in iTunes with a nice clean version of 5.0. Then jailbreak, then jail break again tethered, then flash. Took a couple of times, but it finally stuck and is working perfectly - THANKS!!!!

Re download and try again.
I'm on 10.7 and it works great

Submitted by cowright123 on March 30, 2012 - 11:50pm

Success!  Thanks for the new software release.  Will it be possible to include the option to turn off / hide unused icons in future releases?  Also looking forward to the time XBMC will be available for this version.

i would completely stop usig XMBC, if they just got their media player to play RAR files aswell as xbmc does, xbmc does also find the fanart in most cases , the media player built in you have to rename file to get it to regonice

Submitted by Anon on March 31, 2012 - 12:22am

example

me.reoil1080.danish.mkv will work in xmbc but not media player it has to be recoil.1080p.mkv

love the new update but having some audio issues since updating.  i get static from loud sounds in movies/shows.  anyone else getting this?

Submitted by gordonr.1446 on March 31, 2012 - 12:38am

I am racking my brain trying to get this to work. Not as simple as the last time I did this. It is amazing how stressed out you can get just trying to get it to work. lol I did try the untethered method and then hooked the ATV2 up to my TV. I kepted getting the iTunes/USB cable logo on my screen. Then I tried the tethered method and no luck. Here are my steps, please tell me what I did wrong.

  • Untethered Method Latest version of iTunes Latest version of Apple TV Ran latest version of SeasonPass iTunes does full restore and say all is well. Hook ATV2 up to TV and get iTunes/USB
What I am getting from the latest posts is this. Make sure you have a fresh version of Apple TV restored from iTunes.
Run SeasonPass untethered and then run it again tethered and then run ATV2 Black and it should detect my Apple TV. Anyone want to comment please.

Submitted by Anon on March 31, 2012 - 1:03am

in your first picture you're showing the Media button on the top level without the (useless) TV Shows button. how did you achieve this? also, when Media is on the top is the top drawer filled with recently watched movies?

Submitted by Anon on March 31, 2012 - 1:25am

Mate, you have to have your power cord inserted as well as your usb during the tetherd boot. It took me a while to get that but it was in some precvious how to guides from firecore. Hope it worked.

Is it necessary to use aTV Flash (black) for jailbreak process? What is the requirement/use of this software?

Thanks

XMBC has MANY plugins for online stream films & music from other sites. For example, from VK.COM myvideos folder.

I tired to JB an Apple refurbished ATV2 that's running the old GUI and reporting the firmware as 4.4.4 but when I tried saving the SSH blobs with TU it says the saved blobs are 5.1. Can't JB with latest version either. Anyone seen that before?

Submitted by Anon on March 31, 2012 - 4:17am

Thank you very much for this. Very fast work Smile

Please dont take offence by the silly comments of people that dont understand the JB scene.

Cheers

I just got an AppleTV on 3/30. This does not work at all. Untethered or tethered. DOES NOT WORK! Power cable in before. Power cable in after. DOES NOT WORK. Restored Apple firmware and then tried again. DOES NOT WORK!! Latest version of iTunes installed. DOES NOT WORK!!!

What else can I do!?!?! Seas0nPass says it's incompatible every which way I try this.
