Today we're happy to release new versions of Seas0nPass and aTV Flash (black) that are compatible with latest 5.0 (iOS 5.1) software running on the ATV2. A ton of work has gone into getting everything updated, and a huge thanks go out to Brandon Holland (@640774n6) and Dustin Howett (@DHowett) who both contributed immensely in adding support for 5.0.

Is this a tethered or untethered jailbreak? What's the difference?

Seas0nPass currently provides a tethered jailbreak for the new 5.0 (iOS 5.1) Apple TV software. Functionally, both jailbreak types are identical, the only difference being that a tethered jailbreak requires the Apple TV to be connected to a Mac/PC when first powering it on. Since the Apple TV doesn't have a battery, and is rarely ever powered off, this usually only needs to be done once.

What's new in the 5.0 Apple TV software? Should I update?

  • New interface: - Fast, visual access to all content choices
  • Movie purchases in iCloud: Support for buying movies on Apple TV and playing back purchased movies from iCloud
  • Genius Recommendations: Recommendations for content on the iTunes Store based on previous rentals and purchases
  • Screensaver photos: New National Geographic photos built-in for screensaver
  • On-device sign-up: On-device sign up for content partners on Apple TV using your Apple ID

Updating to the new 5.0 software is not required, and all aTV Flash (black) features will continue to be supported on Apple TV versions 4.2 and later.

What about the ATV3, will this work?

Unfortunately not. Work is still ongoing for the ATV3, and we hope to have more news soon. For the latest updates be sure to follow us on Twitter.

Which plugins are currently supported on 5.0?

  • Couch Surfer (works)
  • Last.fm (works)
  • Maintenance (works)
  • Media Player (works)
  • NitoTV (works)
  • Plex (works)
  • Remote HD (works)
  • Rowmote (works)
  • RSS Feeds (works)
  • Weather (works)
  • XBMC (works)
  • Overflow (not working)

Note: Non-working items require an author update for 5.0 compatibility.

Screenshots! Give us screenshots!

We listened to all the feedback we received and integrated the new icons in a way that should please virtually everyone. Check out the screenshots below for the final result.

I had same problem allweekend day and night JB, here is what I did, I removed any backups in Itunes, restored ATV in Itunes to 5.0 ran seaonpass it created a custome file in Itunes once restore is done, take ATV to tv set and plug power cord in and mini usb to PC, run seasonpass boot tethered when that finishes unplug usb and plug HDMi cable to tv within 10 secs, should see FC logo in settings. I hope this helps

Why should this be necessary if ATV Flash 1.4 can handle ATV2 v 5?

Can someone help??!!!

I have been trying for a couple of days to JB my ATV2 with seas0npass ... it says its running version 5.0 (from the settings) .

Got latest itunes, got latest seas0onpass, diabled virus protection, shut everything else off, rebooted, ... Everything seems to go as planned.

I have to connect power cable as well as usb to get any lights up. There seems to be mixed info as to what is correct here.

Launch seas0npass and seems to go ok, It downloads a bunch of stuff with no probs unzips some stuf, creates ispw or something.... blah blah... and I seem to have no probem getting into DFU mode. I think all is well so far.

itunes launches and regognises the ATV2, then a file selection menu pops aup showing the new retsore files and straight away an error saying something like "firmware not compatable" I cant remember exactly what the error is... From here the new firmware fails to load.

If I try and use boot tethered button after this, it immediatly comes says that it has boot tethered sucessfully.

Without disco the power I can plug in HDMI and nothing comes up, My tv says unidentified HDMI source.

What am I doing wrong?? I have tried every combo of advice given on so many web sites but just cant figure out whats wrong!!!

Hope someone can help.

Thanks to Raingods for the link.Works lika a charm,Navi-x installed also.

Thanks firecore for the good work.  Had no issues with the install.

Not sure why tethered boot is getting a lot of flack.  I have a harmony to control everything and I do not believe my aTV has ever powered off.  Even if there was a power failure, you don't need to jailbreak again, just re-tether boot (takes about 3 min).  Also, to prevent it, I hooked my aTV to a power bar with battery backup...

Just bought a 2nd hand ATV 2nd Gen that had been updated to v5.0.  Bought aTV Flash Black, excellent software and easy to follow instructions for the jailbreak and install on v5.0. For those having the iTunes and Lead icon when disconnecting the usb lead after the tethered boot process, just try the tethered boot process again - was OK for me 2nd time.

Also just loaded XBMC v11 following these guidelines - works a charm!

Thanks everyone for sharing your know-how - has really opened up the Apple TV capabilities for me!

when did you buy it? sounds like you got Atv 3 they dont power up with usb like Atv2. if thats the case you will have to wait for the new jailbrak like me

Atv 2 444 - working fine

Atv 3 5.1 - getting dusty

What about when it reboots or restarts, do you need to be tethered then - or only when power is lost or disconnected?

Submitted by Anon on April 3, 2012 - 12:11pm

Good work.
But is there an option to replace parts of this really ugly GUI, which is made by Apple?
These icons... i would love to see something well designed which doesn't make my think of candy bars.

Submitted by Anon on April 3, 2012 - 1:37pm

Bought it only a couple of days ago.... Im in New Zealand so stuff takes a while to get here. I asked for ATV2 and was labeled ATV2 (store label only).

I think you may be onto something here tho. How do I tell the difference?

Submitted by Anon on April 3, 2012 - 4:14pm

If you use Apple's built-in "Restart" function, you do need to connect to a computer to get up and running. Off the top of my head, I believe Firecore does have a tether-safe restart function, but I'm not 100% positive on that one...

I believe i have AT2 and not AT3 because AT2 is only putting out 720p. Installed seasonal pass to AT2, it seems like a good install, I see the FC Icon. Then i tried to install ATV BLACK, it says it is not jailbroken. Can anyone help?

Submitted by gordito73 on April 4, 2012 - 2:28pm

Great job on the interface and fast follow up of Apple with the latest software. I have several issues:

  1. I had the whole TV center (TV, DVD, cable box, tuner and Apple TV) set up so that it turns off from 23:00 till 7:00. With the old version this didn't cause any problems. With the current version mentioned above, I had to reboot the Apple TV, so I guess I am better off keeping it power all the time, right? Will this be changed any time soon?
  2. When I use the Apple Remote app on iPhone, it seems that now hitting the "Menu" does not take me step back as before or as on the aluminum remote. Any tips how to troubleshoot this?
  3. When on the previous version, all the movies and shows I downloaded from the web showed nice, meaningful titles, now with the latest version, the movies show ok, but the TV shows show the bizarre file names - how do I fix this?

Thank you for any and all answers and to Firecore for making the Apple TV what I expected it to be!

Submitted by Anon on April 4, 2012 - 6:19pm

Sorry, a bit confused. I've got all the recent software with an aTV2. Previously I had the basic features installed and they were working (couch surfer, last.fm, etc.). After updating i've got the new apple icons but there are none of the Firecore add-ons. I'm sure i'm just missing something simple but wondering if someone could explain how I add the basic features I previously had.
Thank you.

I don't know what you mean by, "the movies don't play as nice" but my main concern is whether or not the, "You may experience slow or choppy playback while watching this video on apple tv" is ever going to be resolved. A bug or deficiency such as this should be one of the first things to be tackled and the problem has persisted since I've bought the program out of beta.

I'm I missing a step here???? I followed all the steps in loading xbmc in to apple tv 5.0 and when I finish it kept telling me to apple -tv root# so I just closed it and now on my menu I have a blacked out xmbc app

what went wrong??? I know when I entered the really long string in the steps I got a an error message that reads sh: syntax error near unexpected token new line

Submitted by Bata on April 5, 2012 - 2:25am

I have same problem... :(

what can i do...?

Submitted by RogueSolo on April 5, 2012 - 8:21am

Well then I'm one of the not many with an aTV2 and 5.0 and so far I'm loving this update.

Obviously, I'd prefer the untethered, but I will just re-update when that comes.  And I was able to add the new xbmc build to it as well, so far everything is working great.

If and when will plex work on 5.0 ?

Submitted by theropes on April 5, 2012 - 8:14pm

Ok, so I got XBMC working great on my 5.0 ATV2.  However, this morning when I logged out of XBMC all my ATV icons on the home screen were missing except for NitoTV, XBMC, Settings and Computers.  Has anyone experianced this issue?  Is it possible to get my icons back without re-jailbreaking?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Submitted by Anon on April 5, 2012 - 9:16pm

Dude I'm really getting pissed! I can't get this jailbreak to work! Still getting error 1604... I have gotten a new cable, tried on windows 7 and snow leopard 6.8... Idk what to do! Guess I can't enjoy my apple tv like everyone else

Submitted by Anon on April 5, 2012 - 11:26pm

I have heard rumors that the Apple TV 3 is so secure it may be impossible to jailbreak. Has anyone heard anything to confirm or dispute this?

Submitted by jjallen on April 6, 2012 - 1:40am

No, really, just go away. We don't need people like you who are both obnoxious and barely literate, who like to post abusive comments when separated from those they are insulting by thousands of miles of nice, safe computer cable.

If you wouldn't say something to someone's face, don't post it online.

Learn some manners or take your bad grammar and bad attitude elsewhere.

Submitted by MaxKovic on April 6, 2012 - 3:34am

I have the same concern. I emailed the guys at Firecore about this 4 days ago but up untill today no reply.

It would be good to know if there is some hope on the jailbreak so I know if I can wait or else buy some other media streaming device.

Submitted by Anon on April 6, 2012 - 5:50am

no...

Submitted by chrisb.1805 on April 6, 2012 - 10:00am

yeah still ATV 2 just 3rd gen i think? Have a look on the box mate if it supports 1080p then its 3rd gen!

Submitted by Anon on April 6, 2012 - 12:02pm

Guys have a little faith. When the ATV2 came out people said the same thing and the Firecore team managed to jailbreak it. Good comes to those who wait.
