Today we're happy to release new versions of Seas0nPass and aTV Flash (black) that are compatible with latest 5.0 (iOS 5.1) software running on the ATV2. A ton of work has gone into getting everything updated, and a huge thanks go out to Brandon Holland (@640774n6) and Dustin Howett (@DHowett) who both contributed immensely in adding support for 5.0.

Is this a tethered or untethered jailbreak? What's the difference?

Seas0nPass currently provides a tethered jailbreak for the new 5.0 (iOS 5.1) Apple TV software. Functionally, both jailbreak types are identical, the only difference being that a tethered jailbreak requires the Apple TV to be connected to a Mac/PC when first powering it on. Since the Apple TV doesn't have a battery, and is rarely ever powered off, this usually only needs to be done once.

What's new in the 5.0 Apple TV software? Should I update?

  • New interface: - Fast, visual access to all content choices
  • Movie purchases in iCloud: Support for buying movies on Apple TV and playing back purchased movies from iCloud
  • Genius Recommendations: Recommendations for content on the iTunes Store based on previous rentals and purchases
  • Screensaver photos: New National Geographic photos built-in for screensaver
  • On-device sign-up: On-device sign up for content partners on Apple TV using your Apple ID

Updating to the new 5.0 software is not required, and all aTV Flash (black) features will continue to be supported on Apple TV versions 4.2 and later.

What about the ATV3, will this work?

Unfortunately not. Work is still ongoing for the ATV3, and we hope to have more news soon. For the latest updates be sure to follow us on Twitter.

Which plugins are currently supported on 5.0?

  • Couch Surfer (works)
  • Last.fm (works)
  • Maintenance (works)
  • Media Player (works)
  • NitoTV (works)
  • Plex (works)
  • Remote HD (works)
  • Rowmote (works)
  • RSS Feeds (works)
  • Weather (works)
  • XBMC (works)
  • Overflow (not working)

Note: Non-working items require an author update for 5.0 compatibility.

We listened to all the feedback we received and integrated the new icons in a way that should please virtually everyone. Check out the screenshots below for the final result.

And my wifi is not working at all.
Does sombody have à solution ???
Please help Frown

Go back in to setting and redo the WIFi settings and password and will respring. Then all icons should be back because of a restablish connection, if all else fail do a tethered reboot.

Looks great! However, a few concerns:

Does the Media Player deinterlace DVDs yet? The upgrade looks great and I'd love to use it, but if XBMC doesn't work yet, many of my DVDs will be unwatchable due to the combing in Media Player. (I much prefer Media Player's interface, but without deinterlacing DVD playback doesn't do a lot of good. I'd rather dig up the DVD and put it in my player than watch a picture plagued with combing.

(Also, any chance Media Player no longer has that pixel-wide white stripe that it ads to the right side of 4x3 video?

Cheers!

I have a problem with the media player.

If the login/password is incorrect then you cannot enter the media player application.

Media player just report error message: AFP connection failed: 'unreachable network or incorrect password'

This means that I cannot change the login/password to the correct one.

What does nightly builds only mean for XBMC?

Jailbroke with season pass atv black but only see two icons computer and settings. Is accessed to network but can't connect to iTunes store...........Help please

Submitted by bvesio on April 11, 2012 - 5:06pm

It means that if you want XBMC to work with Apple TV on iOS 5.1, you've got to install a special "build" of the XBMC software, and you've got to do it manually. You do this by establishing an "ssh" connection from your computer to your Apple TV (use Terminal if you're on a Mac -- use PuTTY if you're on a Windows PC), and follow the instructions posted here:  http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=127369

If you need steps on how to ssh to your Apple TV, just google something like "how to ssh Apple TV" and you'll see a lot of videos that show the process step-by-step.

If you're comfortable doing it, the results are great. XBMC has been running just fine on my newly updated Apple TV, and all of my add-ons are working too.

If you're not comfortable doing it, then just wait, and eventually an installer that automates the process will be available, and all of the steps above will be unnecessary.

I am not a computer geek and I had a hard time getting this tethered thing to work. Once I completely read the instructions I could have kicked my own ass for missing such a simple step that I missed and that was unplugging the unit and taking to my tv to hook it up again. Now its jail broke but couldn't get things like NitoTV and XBMC to work but since I came over to this site I can see that Flash Black is the solution to my problems. Am doing that as soon as I get home this afternoon and get this project finished. I pulled what little hair I had out trying to figure this out.....now I know where to come for answers.

Mine does this each time it loses internet connection.

Super post  Smile
I installed XBMC (eden 11.0-3) and it is working very well. This being my first try using ssh and PuTTY I was amazed how easy it was. I can highly recommend the video by xctech if anyone wants to do it manually:

XBMC is apparently updating the post mentioned above, so by using the link you should get the newest beta version of Eden.

I have jailbroken one Apple TV 5.0.1 and was wondering can i do another one by just using the Tether that i have already have from the first one or do i have to go through it again for the IPSW before i do the Tether operation?

Submitted by Anon on April 14, 2012 - 7:09pm

You've built the IPSW, so just start with Itunes to load the jailbroken file, then you can do the tethered boot. No need to create a new IPSW file

Hi, do you have a time line of when Plex will be working with your 5.0 version of software and is there a different process to upgrade from an earlier version of Firecore software for Apple TV 2, or do you have to repeat the entire jail break process. Thanks.

Submitted by bvesio on April 15, 2012 - 10:10am

Plex is not yet working on Apple TV running iOS 5.1.

By the way, Plex is written by another group (not Firecore), and you can get a lot of up-to-date nformation by going to the Plex web site directly. One link you may find useful:  http://wiki.plexapp.com/index.php/PlexNine_Client_ATV

Try a different cable. Blackberry charger cable is guaranteed to work.

just plug in the electro cable flash and remove the cable Smile

Submitted by colemangross on April 16, 2012 - 7:30am

Seems I'm a "NOVICE" however I've herd that USB cables longer than one meter (3 feet) or a cheaply designed cable might carry less than the required 5 volts and or the amperage (ideal = 500 ma, aka 1/2 of an amp and 5 volts per USB outlet) to the USB connector that's powering your ATV2. Not enough volts and or milliamps can cause erratic behavior.

I recall that I had a similar problem with my ATV2 IOS 5.1 (I nearly bricked my vers. 4.3, had no blobs and was forced to upgrade into IOS 5.1). Hence I had no alternative but to re-jailbreak. The New S-Pass J-Break for IOS 5.1 worked great with ATV Flash.

I plugged my "generic" 2 meter USB cable into my ATV2 [On the top the programs large icon style box of the Seas0nPass Jail-break and the Tether-boot combo programs are instructions that say; "Plug in your USB, Then the Power". The white light either barely lit or lights a little but wouldn't come correctly until I plugged the power cord in. Then it seemed to give the ATV a little jump start that it seemed to need so it would finish the tetherboot process.

I hope that I am not giving poor or incorrect advice but you might want to try the same.

No doubt a good quality cord is one less worry for these procedures. Also it may help to "unplug" other USB adapters that are "NON ESSENTIAL" at that current time. I had a PCMCIA and a USB Video transmitter by Iogear that were both power hungry (They ran hot). Other USB adapters can rob power (amps or volts)  from the allotted total available power and leave you shortchanged right when you need to rely on the USB cable the most such as when you plug your USB connector into the ATV2.

You must also be careful to avoid the add on 1x4 USB splitters where you end up having one usb connectors giving you two or four ports. These are ok for "Low Power" USB devices. But may not have the power you truly need. I hope my suggestion are acurate ot at least semi accurate and helps.

I have an idiotic question myself. I had jail-broken my ATV2 also with Seas0npass and ATV Flash-Black a few weeks ago and everything "was" working GREAT with XBMC (Eden 11-3 nightly build) and a recent release of NAVI-X by Navi-x.org (naviextreme.com). My ATV2 worked flawless until I had installed an older Icefilms scraper. Despite many links rely upon MegaUpload (closed) many still links still work. I also installed BLUECOP'S  ADULT repository code.google.com/p/xbmc-adult/  aka repository.xbmc-adult.zip also there is another link better with their name in the repositories. It escapes me.

To add a safety factor I have my ATV2 plugged into a (small 350 watt battery backup) power supply since Miami many power interruptions from the lightning. Usually seconds milliseconds power drops off but on occasion it can be into hours. I highly recommend this option until a untehered J-B comes out.

I made a mistake and ticked the download feature on an A-Z list-link instead of the movie link I thought I aimed for just below the A through Z heading. I ticked CANCEL and the ATV2 froze. Without giving much thought I did what I call or think is called a cold reboot. Otherwise I pressed the [MENU + PLAY] keys until the ATV2's white light rapidly blinked then let go of the MENU + PLAY buttons. I assumed the ATV2 would reboot because I never disconnected the power. None the less SOMETHING that I did forced me to have to do a tether-boot and alas life was wonderful once again. Thanks guys.

Was the a fluke or did I mess up and the MENU + PLAY turn off the power to the unit? I thought by simultaneously holding the MENU + PLAY button for a X seconds that it was equal or similar to exiting from XBMC and watching the device reboot when the ATV2 appears to reboot but the light never seemed to go off.

This was odd and may rarely happen again however if I run into a locked device in the future "If" holding the MENU + PLAY button momentarily turns power off then what is the best way to try to pull out of a locked up ATV2 that is tethered?

i bought a sealed atv2 with a 4.3 firmware when i try to jailbreak it using seasonpass it said error 3194...?

Submitted by Anon on April 16, 2012 - 1:20pm

You need to use an old version of seasonpass that jailbreaks 4.3 google it you will find the correct version. I hope this helps

Submitted by Anon on April 16, 2012 - 2:45pm

For most with this issue, please use the power cable along with the USB for 10 seconds (especially for the light), you need your PC\MAC to see it and install drivers if in windows before trying just the USB cable. Seas0nPass was warned by this via email so hopefully they will make changes. The USB windows drivers needed to communicate with the unit does NOT install with just the USB, so use it with the power for 10 secs or until you see windows install the USB Device drivers and then start your normal procedure.

i use the old version but same error 3194...i have try on both my laptop and pc and both gave me same result...is this because apple have stop signing the firmware?

Before jailbreaking plug the atv into the mains and on the control hold down MENU and DOWN (both together) until your lights blinks rapidly. Now jailbreak and it will find DFU mode.

Hi,

Will ATV flash Black enable me to view pictures from an NAS without iTunes and without XBMC? I had previously jail broken my ATV2 using seas0npass and I found XBMC to be quite buggy. In other words, does ATV Flash Black enable use of the native ATV2 UI to view NAS content?

Thanks

Hi, when can we expect the untethered jb of 5.0? Can I update to aTV Flash (black) 1.5 without being on iOS 5.1?

Submitted by toddm.9357 on April 17, 2012 - 3:40pm

OK... So I might be daft, but I have been running ATV Flash (Black) for a while and I just went through the update process with Seas0n pass and then created the IPSW and did a tethered boot and I only have the Apple icons.  The settings icon is the red FireCore icon, but nothing else...  What gives?

I have a ATV2 and I followed the steps super closely.  It took a while but it did get done.

Should I go through the entire process again?

I appreciate anyone's thoughts.

Can anyone tell me what the best naming convention is to get TV shows to pick up the correct metadata?

Submitted by bvesio on April 17, 2012 - 7:25pm

If the Settings icon is the red Firecore logo, it suggests that you successfully did the jailbreak with Seas0nPass, but you still need to run the aTV Flash (black) application to install all the extra goodies.  You have to ensure both parts are done successfully.

I recommend you login to your Firecore account https://firecore.com/user and download the latest version of aTV Flash (black) that was just released today.

If that doesn't help, I'd start the entire process over, ensuring you are using the most recent version of Seas0nPasshttp://support.firecore.com/entries/387605

Submitted by Anon on April 19, 2012 - 10:55am

If you are using the built in Media Player that Firecore has you would name your TV shows as follows (This is an example) : The.Shield.S01E01.Pilot

Notice the name of the show (The.Shield) Then the Season (S01) Then the Episode Number (E01) Then the name of the episode (Pilot). I use periods without spaces to name my tv shows and so far the metadata catcher has worked flawlessly. Make sure you have a folder with the name of the show (The Shield) then put all your tv show files into this folder. DO NOT put the files in seperate folders underneath your primary folder (The Shield).
