Update: A few users are reporting issues with Plex running on the 5.0+ software. The Plex plugin for Apple TV is quite outdated, and we recommend removing it before installing any updates. If you're using Plex and are experiencing trouble a workaround can be found here please re-run the aTV Flash (black) installer.

Update 2: A workaround has been found to get Plex up and running again. More info can be found here.

Yup - Same as Fofer!

Repeated looping, its trying to power up and then drops out (light goes out) and goes into a loop.  Never anything on screen.

But for me, It was when I updated/Installed Plex that it did it (just after I'd updated Maintenance)

Submitted by albertopardo on July 12, 2012 - 11:27am

Good Job! Thanks.

Submitted by sfbayrealtor on July 12, 2012 - 11:28am

Dam. I'm getting the same boot-up error...endless loop of powering up and then restarting; never getting to the main screen. I ran the couch surfer pro update (at the top of my update list)...that's when it started for me.

bummer; looks like I'll have to re-jailbreak from scratch :(

Submitted by lankysam on July 12, 2012 - 11:29am

thanks for the updates.  i've been a user for three years and it seems like things are really starting to take off.

one modest request (perhaps this is modifiable in one of the support files?):  increase the subtitle offset window.  I find that rather frequently the subtitles and auto are out of sync by more than ten seconds.

thank you

Submitted by Fofer on July 12, 2012 - 11:29am

ALERT!  There's a big problem with this update!  (And why was my previous comment deleted?)

I updated "Maintenance" and am now experiencing a reboot loop on my previously-working-fine AppleTV.

I am able to SSH in, however.  I just don't know what to do next to fix this.  Do I have to re-jailbreak and start all over again?  Yeesh.

Submitted by james on July 12, 2012 - 11:30am

Which version of Apple TV software are you running? The current version of Plex hasn't been updated in awhile, and could be to blame.

Submitted by Fofer on July 12, 2012 - 11:31am

I did NOT touch Plex, I merely updated "Maintenance" and got the same reboot loop.

Submitted by frode.jorum on July 12, 2012 - 11:39am

Same here, all though it was from updating the Media Player. Try to update from my mac, and succedes /seemingly), but still in a loop.

I'm kind of pissed right now...

Soon there will be the new Lion Mountain upgrade, they say it will allow direct mirroring from a mac to apple there any reason to have this anymore? i would like your comments

Submitted by atvflash.scytale on July 12, 2012 - 11:44am

The AirControl API looks awesome!  I will definitely integrate it into my home server status page.  Thanks!

Submitted by james on July 12, 2012 - 11:45am

But Plex is installed on your system I take it?

We're looking into the issue on our end, and it seems it's related to a Beigelist/Plex conflict - and not related to the aTV Flash (black) update.

Submitted by Fofer on July 12, 2012 - 11:46am

James, you have a big issue on your hands.  This update is breaking all of our AppleTV's, making them endlessly reboot.  I reported this first and my comment was deleted.  As have others.  That's now how to best handle this.  Please give us some feedback so we know how to proceed.

Despite the endless reboots, I still have SSH access, and I was still able to run ATVFlash (Black) and "install" everything again.  But my AppleTV is still rebooting endlessly and nothing (other than the occasional Apple logo) appear on screen.

Submitted by Fofer on July 12, 2012 - 11:48am

Yes, they're decidedly different.  Mountain Lion's fullscreen Airplay Mirroring will only work on Macs that are from 2011 and later. Also, it's not great for full A/V movie sync.. it's better for presentations and the like.

Jailbreaking and adding Firecore software does a whole lot more.  Lots and lots more.

I have iplayer on my apple tv however many of the shows do not work. Anyone know how to remedy this?

Submitted by james on July 12, 2012 - 11:49am

Please see my comment below. Removing Plex should cure the issue.

Submitted by Fofer on July 12, 2012 - 11:50am

Plex is installed on mine, but other commenters here are having the same reboot issue and have said that they don't have Plex installed.

My AppleTV is on 5.0.1 and Plex (and everything else) was running perfectly fine for me.

Until today.  When all I updated was "Maintenance" and then rebooted.

Submitted by Anon on July 12, 2012 - 11:50am

I updated ti 1,7 without any problems

Submitted by frode.jorum on July 12, 2012 - 11:50am

I have Plex installed too. When that's said, Plex have been a bit unstable lately overall. But that's not your job.

Submitted by Anon on July 12, 2012 - 11:50am

I have the same loop back problem after upgrading the software . Is there a way to correct this without rejailbreaking?

Submitted by Fofer on July 12, 2012 - 11:51am

And how do we remove Plex, exactly?  The units are rebooting so we have no onscreen UI.

Is there an SSH command you can pass along?

Bummer.  Plex was working fine for me before this update.

Submitted by Anon on July 12, 2012 - 11:52am

I have the same looping problem! i tried to update couch surfer pro and it started doing the looping. I have plex the newest update installed before I updated it.

Submitted by james on July 12, 2012 - 11:53am

SSH in and enter

apt-get remove com.plex.client-plugin

Submitted by mckinnon_ashley on July 12, 2012 - 12:04pm

Well that's weird - I just updated before reading all the posts here but my ATV seems fine. I definately updated because maintenance is showing 1.7 - but I don't have the rebooting problems - everything is working fine.

I updated Media Player (which required a reboot) and XBMC.

I don't currently have PLEX or Couch Surfer Pro installed so maybe updating one of those causes the problem.

Submitted by james on July 12, 2012 - 12:04pm

It's unfortunate, but the Plex plugin seems to be abandoned as it has not been updated since February. :(

Submitted by Anon on July 12, 2012 - 12:04pm

how do you SSH when it keeps rebooting

Submitted by james on July 12, 2012 - 12:05pm

Details for connecting via SSH can be found here.

Submitted by Anon on July 12, 2012 - 12:06pm

SSH in and enter

apt-get remove com.plex.client-plugin

Submitted by pmpc1967 on July 12, 2012 - 12:11pm

Removing the Plex client plugin doesn't make the Apple TV 2 work again. Any other solutions? I just had it running great and now it is all screwed up. Only an Apple logo at first start and after that nothing...

Submitted by Fofer on July 12, 2012 - 12:14pm

It appears the AppleTV is back.  I had to unplug and re-plug, after SSHing in to remove Plex.

This was bad.

Submitted by Anon on July 12, 2012 - 12:15pm

Reboot issue as well! Updated "Maintenance" (and yes, Plex is installed) and it reboots the whole time. Can't SSH in ...

Submitted by Anon on July 12, 2012 - 12:18pm

F#ckin hell... Have to jailbreak all over again... Thanks alot... Damn it

Submitted by bruinenfit on July 12, 2012 - 12:20pm

No problems at all here.

Submitted by Fofer on July 12, 2012 - 12:22pm

Did you not have Plex installed?  That appears to be the crux of the issue.

Submitted by finster on July 12, 2012 - 12:22pm

Thanks, working again for me

Submitted by Fofer on July 12, 2012 - 12:23pm

After I managed to SSH in and remove Plex, then manually restart my AppleTV, it is back again.  <phew>

Submitted by Fofer on July 12, 2012 - 12:24pm

Took a bit of precise timing (as the unit is rebooting, it seems) but I managed to SSH in and remove Plex via that command:
Bedroom-Apple-TV:~ root# apt-get remove com.plex.client-plugin

Reading package lists... Done

Building dependency tree

Reading state information... Done

The following packages will be REMOVED:

0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 1 to remove and 7 not upgraded.

After this operation, 1369MB of additional disk space will be used.

Do you want to continue [Y/n]? y

(Reading database ... 4896 files and directories currently installed.)

Removing com.plex.client-plugin ...
Then I restarted the AppleTV.

It is still endlessly rebooting.

This doesn't appear to be the solution...

EDIT TO ADD:  After I pulled the plug and manually rebooted, my AppleTV is back.

Submitted by james on July 12, 2012 - 12:25pm

Good to hear. :)

Submitted by AJvK on July 12, 2012 - 12:25pm

Just updated, Maintenance and Media Player. Smooth, without a hitch. I don't use Plex, probably that's why.... This version seems noticeably faster than 1.6, in that the contents of my shares load in about half the time it took under the previous version, so Firecore team did something right. Still, it's nowhere near as fast as my AppleTV 2 was when I ran software version 4.x with ATV flash black 1.5.

Submitted by derekb.1773 on July 12, 2012 - 12:25pm

Come on guys this is ridiculous

Submitted by james on July 12, 2012 - 12:26pm

After Plex is removed you may try power cycling the Apple TV. This should bring everything back to normal.

Submitted by tathadream on July 12, 2012 - 12:27pm

After the update, media player can not detect my hard disk connected to the airport extreme, please suggest a solution

Submitted by danibo77 on July 12, 2012 - 12:28pm

Google: Check out the UNIX apt-get and dpkg command..

While you are logging as root with ssh into your aTV, you can remove a package using this command: "apt-get remove package-name". You can find all the package that are installed on your aTV with this command: "dpkg --get-selections > myapps.txt" (the package name will be in the myapps.txt file). For example, you can uninstall Last.FM package like this: "apt-get remove com.firecore.lastfm".

Now, go find the couch surfer package name!

Submitted by james on July 12, 2012 - 12:29pm

Great. Happy to hear everything is working well for you. :)

I can't believe this update has wasted my time! Everything was fine until I clicked update and now my atv2 has to be rejailbroken. I posted help in support and 1 hr has passed no assistance. Pathetic!

Submitted by russellk.3458 on July 12, 2012 - 12:35pm

Same issues here, ssh in and remove plex using the command line shown in the thread below.

Love plex so look forward to seeing this is fixed.

New interface looks good.

Thanks for the tip and instructions. B-)

AppleTV is back online! (without re-jailbreaking).

Submitted by Anon on July 12, 2012 - 12:43pm

@James, you could start by apologizing for the messy release... I use my AppleTV only for Plex... How disappointing...
