Since the release of the ATV3 in March of this year we've received a ton of interest from folks wanting to get aTV Flash (black) up and running on their new devices. From a development standpoint the hardware was almost perfect...1080p capable, with a faster processor and more RAM...what else could you ask for? Well unfortunately the powers that be have not (yet) shared our enthusiasm for running 3rd party apps on the Apple TV, and the burden of jailbreaking these devices (in order to get apps onto them) has remained unchanged since the release of the ATV2 in 2010.

As you may recall we were very optimistic about the ATV3 when it originally launched back in March, and while this optimism remains unchanged it's clear things have not progressed as quickly as anyone would have liked. The biggest hurdle that has yet to be overcome is also the most essential - the jailbreak. While we tend to think of ourselves as pretty resourceful, the security related expertise that is required in order to release a jailbreak for iOS based devices like the ATV is just not in our wheelhouse, and we're simply left to encourage the capable few as best we can. No one is more anxious than us to get the ATV3 opened up to 3rd party apps, but due to the reasons mentioned above we're not able to provide any kind of release timeline right now.

With all that said, we still think an Apple TV with aTV Flash is the best bang for your buck media center on the market, and things will only improve once the ATV3 is ultimately opened up to apps (whether that be via a jailbreak or an official app store). However, this means that for the time being the fun will be limited to the ATV1 and ATV2 which are fully supported by the current versions of aTV Flash and aTV Flash (black) respectively. Both these models can easily be found on many sites such as Amazon and eBay, though the ATV2s usually carry a bit of a premium.

In closing, we're extremely grateful to all those who have continued to support us over the past few years, and even though we don't have an ATV3 version to announce at this point we do have a number of exciting new things in store for the remaining portion of 2012. Keep your eyes on this blog as well as our Twitter feed for all the details.

All the best.

Not wishing to be rude, but that change is something that should have been made as soon as the ATV3 appeared, and not more than six months afterwards. The initial text was confusing to some and there were posts in the forums asking it be changed, which seemed to fall on deaf ears.

it's because of money making companies like firecore, that a jailbreak is not available.

the jailbreakers will only work on it, if other were not profiteering from their work

that's the biggest hurdle to a jailbreak. none of the well known jailbreakers are willing to work on it.

Submitted by Anon on December 5, 2012 - 6:44am

That is just what i did, got a Raspberry PI and put XBian on it and be done with it.

Moral of the story: fireCore losses business like this ... period

Hi Firecore,

Please give us an update on aTV3 since beta jailbreak is available now.

When will your package be ready?

They said it was suppose to be out by the end of November now they are saying December. Who really knows? I was thinking of getting the GBOX Midnight anybody had any experience with that box? I am tired of waiting for ATV 3 Jailbreak.

oh yeah of course I want the new version with other names, like ituneshat or orange like another square or fruit, and a full jailbreak with the latest atvflash installed with the all "cineonline" xbmc addon, or a double click of this one, multi-tasking downloads, stop-resume chat, mail, ip-devices events etc.

And where is the coding hack of other digital platforms, and app store, like cydia-tv or like that, digital futbol double click like nito double click or atv double click, etc etc etc.

All this is the main problem? or not, you need to change the hacking program with a new concept of. Are you sure the atvflash it's only an addon on the ATV3? why hack processing? I wold like to install atvflash directly overairplay or something another intaller, nitotv, etc.

I am sure that it is a lie the 3g atv haven't the same like console ssh and repos, is the system you know. I'm reading a lot of comments about consoles, what's the problem? socket it!!

The ends ... graphics, some games and ATV4 could be, but at the moment have a lot of prgrmas to the app-store-tv like futbol events, news, profiles, editions, remotings, cllings, etc.

Well now I'm paying movies while the online-cydia options is unloking, and I hope to can see the television with all my other taskings of the every day, icons, windows and facing this without problems on the atv, see who is conected or whereis my frinds, suggestions, etc.

Submitted by Anon on December 8, 2012 - 7:22am

im looking a google installer to see all on atv3, where i can find a windows installer to configure it on the atv3 menus?

Submitted by Anon on December 8, 2012 - 1:10pm

Now this wasn't really my plan :P I thought "For sure there is a jailbreak out by now"... went today and bought a ATV3 and noticed now that there might be a problem, hehe.

Is there no other way for me to stream movies (mkv and all the others !apple-friendly) to my tv? I've tried my TV, I've tried Blueray Home System. I must hope for Jailbreak?

Submitted by Anon on December 8, 2012 - 11:43pm

Thanks for the update. I hope that you keep on working to find a solution for the aTV3, even if it takes longer than expected.

Submitted by Anon on December 9, 2012 - 12:41pm

Hmmmm how about fixing what is broken with ATV1 and ATV2 before trying to make money on a shit program you currently sell? How about selling airbags that only deploy every now and then? Sure they install but they are useless, but hey at least you can sell them and install them in the brand new car that just came off the line right? Whatever it takes to make a cheap buck. COMPLETELY DISSATISFIED WITH MY CURRENT ATV1 FLASH THAT DOESNT NOT PLAY FLASH VIDEO ON SITES SUCH AS VIMEO ON 1CHANNEL... ITS FUNNY THOUGH YOU CLAIMED THAT YOUR PRODUCT WOULD PLAY:

Subtitles: Internal: DVB, DVDsub, PGSsub, SRT, SSA, Timed Text, VobSub
External: SRT, SSA, SUB

Sorry to hear about your frustration. While locally stored versions of the file formats you mentioned can be played through the Media menu item, streaming Adobe Flash videos has always had very limited support on the ATV1, and no support at all on the ATV2.

A bit more info as to why this is can be found in a 2010 forum posting here.

Submitted by rwightis on December 10, 2012 - 9:20am

I have a really nice solution for the time being. Of course the ideal solution would be to have a working XBMC running, but this is convenient for now. I have also provided 2 others I have tried and work well.

#1 - PLEX MEDIA SERVER (no converting required)

I am using Plex Media Server to stream to my ATV3. Keep in mind you'll need an iOS device as well, so If you don't have an iOS device like and iPod, iPhone or iPad, you won't be able to do this. (I believe android also has the apps but not sure if it airplays from droid)
Here's the media server app for the Mac or PC.

Install PMS on the computer where your movies are (or where your movie hard drives are connected to). Tell it where to find your media and let it download the metadata. Then you must PURCHASE the app for iOS. Unfortunately it is a $5 app, but hey... you're paying $5 to stream your large collection of free content. haha I'm sure you can splurge the $5.

When PMS is done collecting and you've installed the iOS app, open  it and locate your server. Make sure you go through your settings to select your video/sound quality as it defaults to the lowest. Also keep in mind if you have a weak wireless router, this may cause stuttering. But you can set the app to adjust quality for best streaming speed (if you need to and aren't a bluray quality snob like me).

Movies and shows are organized nicely in the app. You select your movie/show, when it starts playing hit the airplay button and VOILA! I am currently using this method to stream full 1080p movies to my apple tv 3's in my basement hometheater or upstairs TV. We can also stream different movies to each TV simultaneously and still have no stuttering or quality loss in my house.

#2 - AirPlay from Mac
Alternately, if you have a Mac with OS X 10.8, you could just airplay your entire computer screen to the ATV3. Just open XBMC or your movie on your desk top and airplay to the ATV. This method prevents anyone else from using the computer while your trying to watch a movie, but it works.

#3 - iFlicks converter for Apple Devices
Or the 3rd and most expensive solution is a Mac app called iFlicks ($20). This is definitely THE BEST converter going. This solution is best if you want to use your ATV3 without jailbreaking it. This will put your MKV's in a iTunes happy format, which can then be put onto any iOS device or streamed from iTunes to your ATV. Takes about 10-15 minutes to convert a full 6GB bluray MKV.

Make sure you are selecting  iTunes Compatible for your output format. This allows it to be played on ANY apple Device through iTunes. It takes your MKV's, removes all the data and places it into a M4V container. It doesn't do a true conversion, just changes the container type to trick the apple device. The only converting it does is of the audio track so the apple products can read it in an MP4 format, but it actually creates a second track and keeps the original audio track as well. And you can convert back to MKV using MKV Toolnix (free)

If you have movies on a separate drive and don't want them all stored in your iTunes library tell the program not to add to iTunes when finished, and manually drag and drop it into your iTunes from your drive WHILE HOLDING your option key. This puts it into itunes when it's located in a different area.

Hope one of those solutions help! Let's keep fingers crossed for a firecore break soon!

He speaks the truth. The Plex Media Server and Plex mobile app work nicely to stream content to an ATV3. Not only that, if you're out and about you can still access your Plex Media server over the Internet (wifi or just 3G/$G connection). The Plex Media server actually transcodes your 1080p/720p content into a comparable MPEG transport stream that the IOS device and ATV can play. Set this up for a friend with PC/Droid equipment and it works well, although there is still not reliable AirPlay capability on android phones that I can find.

Oh, so you are using Plex to stream to your ATV3... right... LOL

if you have an iPhone you can install "Air Video" $1.99 in the app store.  setup the free server application on your computer and stream to the iPhone from there then use AirPlay to play to the ATV3. That is my solution for my ATV3 I use Media player on my ATV2.

I want to access on my TV the following at the SAME time
MY MEDIA (movies) + music (with the Genius Feature of Itunes for automatic playlist creatiion) on my TV

in other words best of XBMC and APPLE TV

and hey if any device gets me this then i would take it ATV or some android/linux box . My guess is only a hacked Apple TV can do it .

any one thinks better please post

An intermediate solution: Air Video for iPhone/iPad/iPod with Air Video Server on your Mac or PC. Stream all possible content via Airplay to your ATV3. The Air Video Server on your Mac/PC will do the realtime conversion if necessary. Not as nice compared the full functionality of aTV Flash (black), but it does the job... (;jsessionid=07B72821EDA660B0...)

Another bonus; Air Video can also stream the content over the internet, so you can watch your movies/series while on the move. Or airplay it to your friends ATV...

Submitted by robi666 on December 15, 2012 - 2:37pm

I hope that you realise that you're just using airplay to your ATV. Plex is used to stream to the IOS device.

If the ATV3 was jailbreak or open, it would have had a Plex client. Thanks to Apple marketing... you all make it sounds as it is normal to use an iPhone or iPad in the middle... while it is the dumbest thing to do.

Submitted by Anon on December 15, 2012 - 6:23pm

Wow, you're right, duh, I had no idea whatsoever that that's what I was doing. I must have accessed the AirPlay icon and selected my AppleTV 3 by mistake. Are you actually serious? I have nearly 3TB of content sitting on an external drive that, right now, I can't see on my TV without the iOS device in the middle. Nobody said it was "normal" (or even desirable) to stick an iOS device in the middle of the PC or Mac running Plex Media Server and the ATV 3. It's called a "work-around" and the simple fact is, it works extremely well on a decent network. Short of the long awaited jailbreak for ATV3 (which obviously would allow the Plex client to run on the ATV 3, eliminating the need for the intermediate device) I have not heard of any other solutions. Sure it would be nice to eliminate the "middle man" in all of this, but until the jailbreak arrives, this works. If the solution that several of us have come up with is "the dumbest thing to do," perhaps you have a better one? BTW, the Plex app for my iPhone 5 also lets me access not only my movies and TV shows, but also my iTunes music library and my Aperture photo library, not just at home, but anywhere that I have an Internet connection either wifi or 4G LTE. You literally can take it with you.

Submitted by Anon on December 15, 2012 - 6:29pm

Handbrake re-encodes the original movie according to whatever specs you supply. This can take quite some time for the conversion. iFlicks, according to the poster, simply repackages the original movie into an iTunes compatible container. Much, much less work.

Amit, the jailbreak scene will now probably start hurrying up as apparently the jailbreak is important for Amit from Delhi......
I think better, just buy XBMC and Linux box two so you can do all you need.

Submitted by robi666 on December 17, 2012 - 2:43pm

Better things to do... as buying a WD TV for 85 USD and connect it directly to your NAS? But that is just an example...

Now if you love your iPhone and want to share a movie with your boyfriend when you're in your car, that is different.

We are talking about watching movies at home. I don't have an iPhone, I use a Sonim and it is a phone with numbers on and nothing else. I like to turn off my phone when I am home, not to use it to watch a movie on my television. Do you use your iphone to program your oven too?

Submitted by Anon on December 18, 2012 - 9:52am

WOW some people! I use this solution also and it works great! BUT there is another solution for those that do NOT want to use iphone/ipad! Get AIRFLICK it is an app that will stream through Airplay from your pc/mack to your ATV with no middle man. You can download the free version which will work for the first 15 minutes on any movie to show you how it works. You just drag and drop any video on the airflick window and it transmits that video to your ATV. You still have pause and rewind fast forward. You just cannot browse content on the ATV you have to get the content and drop it onto the app. Works well AS A WORKAROUND which is what we re talking about here!

Submitted by Anon on December 18, 2012 - 2:09pm

Add #4. airparrot is a good app to airplay. It also lets you have the option to airplay apps instead of the entire screen, letting you still surf the internet while watching movies on your aptv3. I've been using it for a few days and it works like a charm. It has some nice little features and is supported.

Submitted by BlackBradPitt on December 24, 2012 - 1:49am

Wow, that is interesting to know. But also disappointing. I did think it was odd they were doing so much "beta testing". I would think once you had jailbreak, you'd announce and show it right away and just let the public beta test it? Not to mention if you were actually beta testing with others, it's hard to believe the jailbreak wouldnt leak. IDK just a thought. At this point I'm going with "I'll believe it when I see it".

Just put your movies into your iTunes media folder on the pc,turn on home sharing and you will see the movies on atv and they will play, nice and simple

Come on man. Your talking about going back and working on an almost 6 year old first gen tech product, now into it's 3rd gen. And you want it to do basically everything available today. You must be new to tech, cause that's hilarious! I'm sure that's high on the list of priorities to work on. When you find a tech product that actually delivers on every single claim they make, does everything in the world you expect it too 6 years later please let me know. Cause I've got a deal on a bridge to go with it that you wont want to pass up.

Maybe it's time to move on.....6 years in the tech world is looooong. I can't think of anything i still use today that would be that old. It's like complaining about not having NFC or wireless syncing on my first gen Sidekick today.

Maybe I am missing something here but I have what I think is a very good and inexpensive workaround for streaming my entire video library to my ATV3 at home.

- installed a Seagate cloud drive NAS server on my home network and store all my encoded videos there.
- using iTunes logged in under a generic (to me) account on one my my XP laptops, I dragged and dropped the movies on the NAS cloud drive into that iTunes video library collection. Doing so seems to only create something akin to shortcuts to the movies in iTunes on that laptop which for me was great as I didn't have the hard drive space or the desire to actually store the movies on the laptop.
- activate home Sharing on the XP laptop and leave iTunes running all the time.

With this setup I can stream 720 and 1080p movies to my ATVs (I have ATV2 devices with Firecore and ATV3s that are stock). I can also play these same movies while mobile on my iPad, iPhone, or Android Galaxy S2 via the web browser interface to my cloud drive.

I would prefer to not have to use the XP laptop as the middle man but it works great.
