At long last we're proud to announce the release of the first beta version of aTV Flash (black) for the new AppleTV. This version features a number of exciting features, with many more to come. It took a bit longer to complete than anticipated, but it's a great start to what we hope will be a powerful software suite for the new black AppleTV.

During the beta phase we will be working to improve current features and add new ones, so we would appreciate any feedback you may have. More info on how to submit feedback can be seen near the end of the post.

Read on for more details on what's included and how to get the beta.

The first version of aTV Flash (black) is compatible with the 4.0 AppleTV software only. The new 4.1 software requires a few adjustments but we plan to have compatible version available soon.

Update: Currently aTV Flash (black) is for Mac only. We plan to have a Windows compatible version within the next few days.

Update #2: The Windows version of aTV Flash (black) is now available.

aTV Flash (black) will be available at the discounted discounted price of $19.95 during the beta (pre-order) phase. Once the final version is ready for release the price will return to the normal level of $29.95. The original aTV Flash is also being reduced to $39.95.

What's in the beta?

  • Surf the Web - Experience the web in all its glory and stream HTML5 video from many popular sites (note: not all HTML5 sites supported yet).
  • Discover New Music - Find new artists you'll love by accessing radio stations, artist bios and slideshows.
  • Plex Client - Stream media from Plex Server running on your Mac. (big thanks to quiqueck for putting this together)
  • Info on Demand - Keep track of current weather and news feeds on your AppleTV.
  • One-click Updates - Install, remove or update plugins in a snap through the native AppleTV interface.

What's coming soon?

  • Go Beyond iTunes - Enable playback of additional media formats.
  • Access Media Anywhere - Stream media from most NAS devices.
  • Much, much more...

How do I get it?

  • Current Users - aTV Flash (black) is available as a free upgrade. After logging into your account you will have an extra download link for aTV Flash (black). Your normal aTV Flash license and download links will remain unchanged. Additionally any available renewal specials can also be found in your account.
  • New Users - aTV Flash (black) is available for pre-order at a discounted price of $19.95. All pre-orders get instant access to the beta.
  • Beta Signups - Those that signed up for the beta will be receiving information on how to download and install the beta via email. We're working hard to get this done ASAP so please be patient.

Help us improve

Please keep in mind this is beta software, and some features may will not be 100% complete. We're committed to providing the best software possible and your feedback helps us greatly in achieving this goal. If you have an idea on how we can improve or have found something that's not quite right please tell us.

Comments are welcome below. Enjoy. :-)

THX a lot, i must downgrade to 4.0 and then i can try it !!!!

Submitted by Anon on December 1, 2010 - 11:02am

I'm glad I backed up my SSH Blobs before I upgraded. I'd much rather have these new features than 4.1's gimped airplay additions anyway...

Submitted by Anon on December 1, 2010 - 11:09am

Pls pls do get us a 4.1 version soon. Although I suppose that a jailbreak for 4.1 needs to come out first.

Submitted by Anon on December 1, 2010 - 11:11am

Great! Getting my pre order right now!
How do I jailbreake may 4.0 Apple TV Black?

Submitted by Anon on December 1, 2010 - 11:13am

Thanks James, now my question is about "Download AppleTV 2G firmware. Version 4.1.0". Shouldnt I use 4.0 only?

Submitted by richardy.58181 on December 1, 2010 - 11:23am

uh, I can download the file but then what?

Did I miss the instructions link, does this not work for PC?

Submitted by james on December 1, 2010 - 11:23am

It's a little confusing but essentially:

AppleTV 4.0 = iOS 4.1

AppleTV 4.1 = iOS 4.2.1

The download link in the knowledge base currently points to the AppleTV 4.0 software.

Where is the Windows version?
Do we now have to wait again for a very long time, just like the old version?

Submitted by yanivf.84347 on December 1, 2010 - 11:24am

Is there a way to downgrade to 4.0?

Submitted by GusRocket on December 1, 2010 - 11:26am

Ok. I didnt upgrade my Apple TV to the latest version, because I think that there isnt a jailbreak fot it yet.

In the KB it says 4.1.0 not 4.0.0 ... Im a little confused.. But thanks anyways

Submitted by james on December 1, 2010 - 11:26am

Right now it's Mac only, but a Windows version will be available within the next few days.

Post updated.

Yes - they are one and the same. We've just added an easy install/update option.

Does this beta version support use of the external USB port.  I have ATV Flash for my original ATV with a huge Western Digital (2TB) external drive.  I'll go out tonight and buy a 2nd generation AppleTV if this beta version supports external USB port?

Someone please post if they know the answer.

Submitted by tonyelbatal on December 1, 2010 - 12:56pm

Anyone can post a link to how to downgrade to 4.0 ?

Submitted by Anon on December 1, 2010 - 1:01pm

Hi, I already upgraded to AppleTV 4.1. Can I still jailbreak and use the beta?

Submitted by Anon on December 1, 2010 - 1:15pm

Just put your device in DFU and install a fresh jailbroken iOS 4.0

Submitted by averyw21 on December 1, 2010 - 1:15pm

Hello, I purchased the Beta version, will I get the upgrade for the Windows when it comes out?

Submitted by Anon on December 1, 2010 - 1:15pm

So those who signed up for the beta get an email saying they need to pre-order in order to get the beta. Your blog post is misleading. People might think you send out emails with a download link =

Submitted by Anon on December 1, 2010 - 1:15pm

Thanks James for the awesome fast reply. Would be also nice to have a little sneak-peek about the "Go Beyond iTunes" feature: will it be -perhaps- available before the end of the year?

Submitted by catj.36136 on December 1, 2010 - 1:18pm

i waited long for this, and that it's here im not excited, since its not compatible with the 4.2.1   running on the current ATV2 then its useless

Submitted by james on December 1, 2010 - 1:26pm

We actually had two different signup forms. One was for the beta program (signup was posted in a 9/30 blog post), the other was for aTV Flash (black) related news (posted on the aTV Flash (black) product page). It sounds like you received the news email.

If you signed up for the beta as well you'll be getting a second email.

Submitted by james on December 1, 2010 - 1:28pm

Not in this version, sorry.

Submitted by wendyf.9109105 on December 1, 2010 - 1:31pm

Well, I'm a little conflicted - delighted that this is almost ready; but PO'd that I paid $39.95 for the ATV flash to secure a free upgrade, then discover the next day that if I had waited one more day I could have purchased for $20 less.Damn.  To say the least. :-(

Submitted by Anon on December 1, 2010 - 1:32pm

Am I reading correctly that Flash-based sites such as Hulu are not yet supported by the web browser in this beta?

Submitted by 5stringdeath on December 1, 2010 - 1:56pm

There is no jailbreak for that yet anyhow .....

Submitted by Anon on December 1, 2010 - 2:24pm

One of the awesome features dies not work in the Netherlands:
I've also jailbroken my iPhone 4 and installed through Instalous, works like a charm.. The reason I used installer is because isn't in the AppStore here.

Could you guys tell me how to get it to work? Maybe US account? Or maybe check out why it does work on the iPhone. I could stream it from the phone, but since it's there, it would be nice if it worked for everyone..

Thanks for the great beta! Hope to see more soon..

Submitted by Anon on December 1, 2010 - 2:26pm

Hi James, I did sign up for both of them. So far no email regarding the actual beta arrived at my mailbox.
I hope to get it soon, I'm more than excited about your product.

Submitted by johnm.3743 on December 1, 2010 - 2:49pm

Just tried to jailbreak and restore following the Pre-installation checklist.

When I select the custom software and do the restore, the device goes out to Apple and comes back with the message that " the device isn't eligible for the requested build".  Then, I have to restore to the normal 4.2.1

Used Pwnage 4.1.2 and appletv2,1_4.1_8M89_restore.ipsw

Any ideas on how to get around the checking process?

Submitted by bisalam.2568 on December 1, 2010 - 2:55pm

The installation is asking for me to specify a passwork for the remote host.  What is this?

Submitted by Anon on December 1, 2010 - 2:57pm

Did you save shsh with Tiny Umbrella before you updated to 4.2.1? Then you can downgrade. If you didn't save the shsh, you have to wait for the new jailbreak..

Tip: save your shsh now for this firmware. New version can be here soon!

Submitted by Anon on December 1, 2010 - 2:59pm

If jailbroken and unchanged: alpine

Submitted by Anon on December 1, 2010 - 3:06pm

my password doesnt work while installing, i entered my password, but it doesnt let me press transfer or continue. it connects fine in terminal with the same password though

Submitted by Anon on December 1, 2010 - 3:08pm

Hi James,

Was wondering when you think that USB functionality to access movies and music from an external will be/will it ever be available. Really looking forward to buying your product, just waiting to hear back regarding this functionality

My atv2 was running atv software version 4.0, I made sure I didn't upgrade as I was waiting for the flash black release.

I put the atv into DFU, but when I tried to install the custom software, itunes said "The apple tv could not be restored. This device isn't eligible for the requested build"

Can anybody help me with what this mean? I have also tried to install the unmodified build and I get the same message!

Has anybody any help?

Submitted by Anon on December 1, 2010 - 3:14pm

Whats different from this than my already jailbroken atv?
All I see are Plex (which doesnt work, it cuts off like 2 mins before the show is over) and nitoTV which is kinda useless.. do I have to rejailbreak?

Submitted by Anon on December 1, 2010 - 3:15pm

You should have done one of the following;
1. Already jaibroken it
2. Saved your shsh with Tiny Umbrella

If you jailbreak it now, you install the old firmware. There is still a check by apple which says you have to use the new firmware. If you saved your shsh, you can fool iTunes to look somewhere else then apple to check the signature. This would be Saurik's servers. Google him for more info..

Submitted by Anon on December 1, 2010 - 3:17pm

Don't rejailbreak. Just install..

Submitted by Anon on December 1, 2010 - 3:20pm

To avoid shows stopping in the middle (very uncool) try to use a networkcable instead of wifi. Helps a bunch plus better video quality.

Submitted by Anon on December 1, 2010 - 3:25pm

Do you use your password when you ssh into your apple tv, or just for your Mac? Standard apple tv password is alpine, try that..

Submitted by Anon on December 1, 2010 - 3:29pm

please, please, please make a couple websites outside the USA work within this browser, HULU (less preferred) and/or (more preferred). Otherwise, I may have to go buy a mac mini, which i don't want to do. By the way, great start - lots of potential.

Submitted by Anon on December 1, 2010 - 3:41pm

Having the same problem....Sorry can't advise but your not alone. Brand new out the box. Wasn't aware of Firecore and had made the official apple update. Not sure what step to take next in order to jailbreak.

Submitted by catj.36136 on December 1, 2010 - 3:52pm

its because the iphone version of last fm works everywhere, but the one on the ATVs is usin the web to stream it,u need vpn for both last fm and pandora, thats what i use to stream all my content, the old ATV can do that, hope they add the VPN  on this ATV2

Submitted by catj.36136 on December 1, 2010 - 3:55pm

correct, and i won't wait for that either, since they couldnt get that on the old ATV and i dont think this ATV2 will have flash

Submitted by catj.36136 on December 1, 2010 - 3:56pm

i was not hopin for it to work with jailbreak,i expect it to work just like the old ATV

Submitted by mirod.034100 on December 1, 2010 - 4:17pm

i have a problem just at the beginning!!!

the installer says that im not connected to the internet?!?! and that i should dowload the latest version!!

why that!? The internet connection is OK!!!

EDIT: the installation manager was blocked by little snitch...;)

Submitted by Anon on December 1, 2010 - 4:31pm

well isnt even on there and all my overflow stuff is still on there, so thats not right. atv did nothing but put a maintenance menu on there and there are 0 extentions to even manage, so i dont get it
