Today we're proud to introduce 'Seas0nPass' - a new jailbreak tool designed specifically for the AppleTV.

Seas0nPass was created exclusively for the AppleTV user, as previously no AppleTV specific jailbreak tools were available. Seas0nPass allows you to easily create custom AppleTV IPSW files and restore them in iTunes (similar to the existing Pwnage Tool app). Also included is a simple 'tethered boot' option which aids in using newer AppleTV firmwares when an 'un-tethered' jailbreak is not yet available.

Seas0nPass is available for free, and is open source. The source code is available on Github.

What can I do with Seas0nPass?

  • Jailbreak the AppleTV with the latest 4.1.1 (iOS 4.2.1) software.
  • Easily perform a 'tethered boot' (when necessary).

What is the difference between a 'tethered' and 'un-tethered' jailbreak?

A tethered jailbreak requires the AppleTV to be connected to a computer for a brief moment during startup. An un-tethered jailbreak removes this restriction. Un-tethered jailbreaks are are a bit more complex and take more time to complete.

How much does Seas0nPass cost?

Seas0nPass is available as a free download - no strings attached.

What are the minimum requirements?

Mac: OSX 10.6 or later

Windows: coming soon

Can I use this on my iPhone, iPad, or other iOS device?

Nope. Seas0nPass is designed exclusively for the 2nd gen AppleTV.

Sounds great! Where can I download it?

The Seas0nPass app, and user guides can be found at Seas0nPass.com

i jailbreak my ATV 2 and restore in itunes…after i plug to the tv i get he apple sign but it freezes…please help!!!

Submitted by Anon on January 13, 2011 - 6:48am

Had the same problem last night. But I managed to fix it by unplugging the Micro-USB and closing iTunes. Then I started iTunes again and re-plugged MICRO-USB. iTunes recognizes the ATV device and now restores it to factory settings seamlessly. I still have the problem that I am unable to perform jailbreak with SeasOnPass and installing the software. But at least I have the peace of mind that I can always put everything back to scratch zero.

I havent tried on my ATV yet. But I consistently have that exact same problem (hangs at 99%, even on factory restore) with both my ipad AND my iphone (3GS). Depending on the computer I use. I regularly update and rejailbreak each on every firmware including the Betas. I have 3 computers I use. All 3 have itunes 10.1 on them. I have a Macbook Pro, a Macbook, and a Hackint0sh'd Dell Mini 10v. All 3 are on OSX 10.6.6. At last restore they were all on 10.6.5. All should be the same, right? Well its not. Restore fails (hangs at very end of "restoring firmware") very consistently on the Macbook Pro, and on the hack'd Dell. It works for both, every time on the black Macbook. Same goes for redsn0w. Has "unexpected error" on two out of three, but not on Macbook.

The point is, I would try a different computer.

Try reinstalling Itunes and restarting your computer.I also restored my apple tv to factory specs. I had the same issues and this fixed it.

Thank you Flolen for your reply man!!

I will do as you mentioned and test on the ports I have on my laptop (3 USB ports). I will keep testing on those 3, until iTunes don't give me the 1600 error. I will let you know what happens. Thanks for sharing your insight Smile

****Check it... For you people with failed scripts... Make sure that you open itunes and that the ATV has already been verified by Apple. If not, it screws up the script from the get go or just run it again.

****For those of you who find that your update freezes when it's just about complete, Boot your mac into "SAFE MODE" and do it again... You have some shize that is screwing with iTunes.

Those of you that just keep complaining, what are you doing Jailbreaking anything. If your idea of jailbreaking is jailbreakme.com or greenpoison, Get a life, you noobz or prepare yourselves for alot of trials and errors and apple codes telling you your USB ports aren't working...

It took me a few try's at first but I got the whole process down just fine, no bubble no troubles!!!

Submitted by DigitalFundaMental on January 13, 2011 - 10:15am

Sjaak, SeasOn Pass runs a script to download the IPSW and another to install it... Does it ever download and then jailbreak the IPSW, sounds like the script that does that is failing right off the bat.

***Make sure that the ATV is plugged in and you have opened iTunes and allowed it to be recognized by Apple... If NOT the whole process goes down the crapper...

Submitted by Anon on January 13, 2011 - 10:18am

This tool is great! I am so glad someone came up with an easy solution specifically made for Apple TV. Using this to do a tethered boot simplifies the process greatly. I have used this to JB my ATV2 with no problems whatsoever.

Like someone else stated, thank you for creating a jailbreak solution specifically for the ATV2 community!

Take a step back reboot and retry... You'll get it...

I guess you've just been lucky. A majority of the users didn't succeed, despite of following the manual. I still think this software has been released to soon. There should have been a proper warning that this is just beta-software. In general beta-software doesn't work so bad; this one, however, is crappy.

Whwn will the windows pc come out, I dont have a MAC, and the 4.3 betta just got released the other day. so I know apple will stop signing 4.2.1 firmware soon. please convert this over to WINDOS ASAP. Thanks Fire core! You still ROCK!

Ok, so I can't jailbreak my ATV2 on windows platform???  Why the hell did I download firecore then in the first place if I can't get there from here?

Submitted by Anon on January 13, 2011 - 12:01pm

Well, i went thru the entire process and it said my ATV2 has been JB. But then when i plug it back into the TV, the Apple TV logo comes on for a few second and then the light start flashing and nothing happens? I waited an hour and still nothing. If i plug it back in my computer, it shows it in Itunes and i see the restore button

Help?

Submitted by Anon on January 13, 2011 - 12:46pm

Same thing happened here. I actually had it jailbroken, started up and worked until installing firecore's software then the only response was an apple screen but the ios never booted. Had to restore to factory settings.

Submitted by nickdiacre on January 13, 2011 - 1:02pm

Problems I have getting into DFU relate to not having power plugged in while trying to enter.

Try with power and no USB or power and USB and see if that helps.

I never managed to enter DFU using the pwnage tool technique.

hi, Started this evening to jb my upgraded atv 2g, 4.2.1 at 19h30. Finished now and it works finally !!!!! i did : start Seas0nPass select '' create IPSw connect usb cable dfu mode and wait if, ... yes you get the script error message, DON'T CARE ABOUT IT .. close Seas0nPass restart itunes let your atv be recognized by itunes and apple. itunes ask you to restore Hold down the Options key (alt) and then click on Restore (note that the Option button should be pressed until Restore is clicked). This will open up a window to allow you to select the firmware software file you would like to use to restore to itv select the Seas0nPass generated firmware : AppleTV2,1_4.2.1_8C154_Custom_Restore.ipsw and let itune restore it .... Well, i had to restart all the process 4 times until it works... same with the Thethred boot process, i had to do it 6 times until ok... voila, that's my experiences... thanks to firecore for the job done ..

One question to Seas0nPass

Can i only do with Seas0nPass only an a 'tethered' or also an 'un-tethered' jailbreak?

Submitted by thescragster on January 13, 2011 - 2:39pm

At the moment, you will only be able to jailbreak in a tethered mode.

Submitted by thescragster on January 13, 2011 - 2:41pm

Hi Philippe,

It sounds as though you have jailbroken your device correctly. Now you need to plug your Apple TV into your computer, run Seas0nPass and select the boot-tethered mode. This will allow your Apple TV to turn on.

A PC version is being worked on but will still take some time before it is able to be released, please be patient.

There are a ton of PC users left out to dry again!

It's the old saying, Hurry up and wait and wait and wait some more!

Then I'm sure we'll get to wait even some more after that.

I now have a nice Apple brick. The Seas0nPass was working fine but when the actual restore started in iTunes the bar went up 2 or 3 blips then crashed out, now I can't resotre the original or custom IPSW. I am using a Macbook with bootcamp so restarted into Windows and tried again with the same results. It all appears to work but the restore crashes out. If I could at least go back to factory restore that would be a start. I also tried 0.6.5 same problems. Any ideas?

Ok, so I turn my computer a couple of times today.  My ITV is officially jailbroken by Seas0npass and thethered.

All I want to do is to be able to see all my movies store in a hard drive connected to my 24" Intel mac.  I have Plex on my ITV and today I was able to see two 720p movies with no buffering or stopping problem.

Not bad for a beta version.  I am so sorry that not everybody is having the same luck.  However, I believe the trick here is to be patient, and continue to do the steps in the tutorial.  I do see that paying 19.99 for a beta version can give people the right to be disapointed, but I do think this is all about testing, and not everything is going to according to plan.

However, this jailbrake method does work and I can confirm this fact.

MAC, MAC, MAC, jailbroken, jailbroken, jailbroken,
Running iso 4.1 and was always jailbroken get with the program guys this is becoming the worst 20 bucks I ever spent. Will and always deal with the big boys for jailbreaking a device.
What a joke your moto is "see what's coming soon" still waiting and will take for ever for windows.

Do you have an iPhone and have some sort of Sync Software set up on your computer? I had software on my Mac to sync my iPhone wirelessly with iTunes (Wifi Sync - it's Cydia/Jailbreak software). I had the same issue where it hung 99% and found out that I needed to uninstall Wifi Sync from my Mac. Once I did that i Had no problems with it hanging at 99%.

Submitted by Anon on January 13, 2011 - 4:46pm

Where in your beta(black) when we buy your product does it say "what's coming soon" do you state your working on jailbreaking? Care about the other video formats.
You came out with a jb that 90% are screwed over ,let's test the video formats and everything else in beta. You stand a better chance.

If I have my Apple TV set to "sleep" after an hour of not using it, when it wakes up, do I have to tether it again to my MacBook Pro used to jailbreak just to get it up and running again? I know if it powers off, I heard a tethered jailbreak needs to be attached and "reset" again, but how does "sleep" mode affect things? I hope all is good as long as it is jailbroken and I leave it on or in sleep mode, but always plugged into power. Thanks.

For people complaining and whining that spending 20 bucks on firecore's atv flash is, and I quote "the worst 20 bucks I have ever spent". I think they should learn to read!!!

The description on the atv flash page states that it is a pre-order. It also clearly states on the same page that you are paying for a beta software. I dont know what some people think beta software is anymore. Besides, you shouldnt even get the software in the first instance until its ready and its only a priviledge being offered by firecore. The actual retail price is 29.95 and you seriously have a choice of paying this full price when the software is ready for primetime or paying 19.95 just to key into the offer for a future benefit (however without downloading and using the beta).

If you must download and use the beta you paid 19.95 for (which you have the option of not downloading and using) then please treat it as a BETA software (i.e. a software under development). But please learn to read before you buy anything and dont give other people the impression Firecore is fraudulent.

ATVflash is a great piece of software only if you'll wait till its completed.

Thanks.

Submitted by Anon on January 13, 2011 - 7:38pm

why would you even start with get a mac like the rest. Accomplishing nothing but me barking at you. Settle down kitty

Submitted by Anon on January 13, 2011 - 7:47pm

It definitely was not luck. I have not yet purchased ATV Flash seeing as it does not really have any functionality that I need. So I would not know how that piece of software works. The jailbreak app that they made works fine. I have used it over and over again to restore my Apple TV.

There was a proper warning. IT SAYS IT IS A BETA SOFTWARE! When software is in beta, it means that it is not fully functional. Beta testing helps the developers add features and fix bugs. It is not the final product, so don't expect a finished piece of software.

You people should really stop complaining. I'm getting sick of all the whiners.

Submitted by Nuworld on January 13, 2011 - 8:10pm

Dude you don't have a clue what your talking about!

I have been writing bata software for years and never had a problem like this one.

Like others have said this bata should have been test much more than is was.

If it ever was tested.

Firecore is getting a ton of money for development of this software from many people.

Only to deliver something that don't work.

Bata or not. This is a P.O.S. bata and should be removed until they get it right.

Infact, because it is crap it should be free until a stable release is avalible.

Then charge some $$

Submitted by Anon on January 13, 2011 - 10:39pm

Dude... Your problem is that you've written bata software many times but not BETA software! So STFU and let James and company do their work. Smile

Submitted by Anon on January 13, 2011 - 11:16pm

This might have been mentioned but I can't find it if it has. When I boot tethered it says it's finished successfully and that I can remove the USB safely. Then when I do and look at my TV screen, it is frozen on the iTunes logo with a usb and arrow showing to plug it in. If it's successful why is it asking me to plug the usb back in? Thanks for the help.

Submitted by ndaynes42 on January 13, 2011 - 11:54pm

The concept is very simple upon using the pre-order you have the benifit of a discount when it get official released, Basta!

For all those who like to participate and install beta software on their ATV2 should realize what they are doing.

It's common knowledge that beta is a pre-release testing fase software, what in worst case will brick your ATV2.

It's very clear to me that all these people whining about the revision fase or cash they have spend bad...... are not the brightest lights in our comunity.

----------

If you are a developer and know what to do when it bricks, install BETA en give feedback on your findings

If you are not...... good luck to you, but do not talk Sh## here.

Spot on mate.

People need to understand that these software packages are still in development. People are complaining that features arn't coming fast enough, others are complaining that things are being released to soon. In that sense, it's a loose loose situation.

People need to understand these guys are putting huge amounts of work, people should be greatful, not complaining :)

Submitted by thescragster on January 14, 2011 - 2:53am

Great to hear your success story, i'm sure it gives others hope that this has worked for people.

Good stuff!

Submitted by dicx.2139 on January 14, 2011 - 6:25am

No, as long as the power is plugged in and you do not lose power you can put it in standby mode as much as you want.

Submitted by dicx.2139 on January 14, 2011 - 6:30am

I have always had success after putting my ATV in DFU mode, Hold the buttons for 7 seconds. Have itunes open and after you hit the menu, play buttons for 7 seconds itunes will unmount your ATV. It should remount and say that it has found it in Restore mode. Then try to do an official restore with a fresh IPSW from Apple.

Submitted by Anon on January 14, 2011 - 6:57am

No tethering need when waking up from sleep. Only when you power down.
