Today, as you've no doubt discovered, is April Fools - the official holiday of the web. While we're a bit light on jokes, we do have a new version of Media Player for you.

What's new in version 0.2?

  • Added photo slideshows
  • Added basic video playlists
  • Added support for guest/anonymous NAS logins
  • Added volumes list sorting
  • Better remote share folder browsing (root folder issue)
  • Better Remote.app support
  • Resolved issues in AFP navigation resulting in incorrect 'menu' button handling
  • Resolved issues resulting in incorrect video playback after rewinding on 'fastest' speed
  • Resolved duplicate AFP share entries
  • Other miscellaneous fixes

How do the photo slideshow/video playlist features work?

When browsing files stored on your remote share Media Player will automatically detect folders that contains supported photos for the slideshow, or supported movies for video playlist. These folders will be designated with special icons as shown below.

To start a photo slideshow, or video playlist simply highlight the folder, hold the center select button and choose the appropriate option.

Accessing photo slideshow and video playlist features

How do I get it?

Media Player 0.2 can be installed on your ATV2 through the Maintenance --> Manage Extras menu.

Enjoy!

Can't get it to install through maintenance

very very very nice. thanks.

i just tested it.

- now subfolders are supported on my synology NAS.

- .avi .mp4 and .mpg are playing great.

- menustructure of video_ts folders are running, but the menus and the .vob files are stuttering.

most h.264 .m4v aren't playing. the scroll bar is running, but no picture or sound to see/hear. neither bought files from the itunes store, nor self encoded files.

the ones which are playing are stuttering.

.mkv stuttering

and now the second time it' hanging up. once in playback of a film, and once in the navigation of the subfolders lowtide is restarting.

we keep asking but we get no answer, when we going to get VPN on the APT2?

Submitted by Anon on April 1, 2011 - 8:21pm

The Media Player is working nice - Finds all files on my NAS-drive...

... but all files (.avi .mpf or .mpg) are stuttering... they are playing about 15 seconds good and then start stuttering about less than a second and then following to play again for 15 seconds and so on...

anybody know my issue?

Submitted by ctyrider on April 1, 2011 - 10:01pm

Has the issue with 'out of memory error' during 720p playback been resolved in 0.2 ?

Submitted by Pytek on April 1, 2011 - 10:12pm

ok, good job but just a few issues....

Running ios 4.2.1 (Apple TV 4.1)

GOOD POINTS

1.  NAS seems ok.

2.  Detects and accesses all hard drives on my Macpro easily even with anonymous login

3.  Fetches metadata (results aren't quite related to many of my home made videos however). Any possibility of creating an option to search for or not to for each video in this feature?

BUGS AND OTHER ISSUES ....

1.  Stuttering in .mov, mpeg, .mpeg2, .avi videos I tested so far

2.  Via the Media Player, Photos in folders are empty and it says 'There are no items for playback"

3.  Photo slideshow not working

4.  For some reason navigation via the iphone becomes jittery as the remote app on my phone stops responding well after the stuttering issue experienced in (1) above.

5.  Cant Play any music file whatsoever through the Media Player

6.  under the Internet category, after using the RSS feeds, the main page doesnt seem to refresh as it should. The blue border selection could be on Youtube for instance but even when I move to the podcast selection the top shelf shows absolutely no changes.

7.  Not entirely sure if the RSS feeds trigered the refresh problem but something did.

Some of these problems could be due to the fact that I am not running the updated iOS 4.3.1 (AppleTV 4.2) but just had to report my findings anyway.

Keep up the good work

I'm new to FireCore's aTV Flash, and I'm super pleased, if only for one single feature... volume control! Thank you guys for your hard work, and look forward to more nuggety goodness.

XBMC starts to crash after upgrading media player to version 0.2.
Removing media player fixes the XBMC crash issue.

Not yet - we're still working on a number of internal improvements that should allow for much better video playback.

any way to update via terminal?

Submitted by james on April 2, 2011 - 7:12am

There are lots of improvements still under development and the performance of video playback is one that will see great improvement in an upcoming version.

Submitted by james on April 2, 2011 - 7:14am

A list of Bonjour compatible devices will appear below 'Other'. If your drive/computer doesn't appear there you can select Other to set it up manually.

Installation of media player causes xbmc to restart every time I try to play an mkv file. Mkv functionality returned when I uninstalled the media player

Submitted by tonyson25 on April 2, 2011 - 10:50am

more feedback... my media player seems to be showing a message that panel that says low memory warning when playing files (mkv, mpg) movies and some hourlong tv shows. This seems to be the biggest problem I've noticed. Also in the rss feeds can there be a zooning device added... tough to read small type from across the room.....

But continued good work, anything else we can help you with?

Submitted by Anon on April 2, 2011 - 12:57pm

Just want to say thank you for all the hard work. As I'm sure you know from all the posts, still issues to be resolved but definitely a huge improvement. At least now I can see all subfolders on my NAS and access files within them. Looking forward to future improvements! Can't wait until I can use the media player exclusively and won't even need XBMC.

Love it. Working fine. Yes need a manual metadata option. Want ATV2 a2dp to work with bluetooth stereo headphones.

First, as to the naysayer.  Yes, I was, and am willing to admit it.  The lack of evidence after the initial build-up was what drove me to it, and at the time, it was a perfectly valid response.  I requested my money back and FireCore complied.  That said, now that we have finally seen tangible proof of the media plug-in, I'm waiting with baited breath, enough so that I re-subscribed.  Good job so far folks.  My bug experiences are the same as others, so I won't repeat what you already know, but I'd like to talk about the UI.

The one thing that makes the AppleTV so great is the user interface.  Notice that Movies, TV Shows, Netflix, and You Tube all use the same interface.  I personally believe that a plugin such as Firecore's should adhere as close to Apple's interface as possible, which was one of the beauties of ATVFiles under the original ATV.  Rather than have the up/down buttons adjust the volume ( I already have a remote for the TV that does that), it would be better for those buttons to act exactly as they do in the other plug-ins mentioned above; up brings up the play bar to show where you are in relation to the entire movie, and down allows you to fast forward between chapters.  Aside from this ATV2, I also have a Boxee Box, and have to say that this is one of the big drawbacks of the Boxee.  Every single App uses a whole new UI, therefore, anytime you launch a new app, you're learning a whole new user interface (much like using ATV2, then launching XBMC).

I realize that this code is alpha at best, but I figured I'd try to plant the seed before the UI was set in stone.

Again, great work, and best of luck.

Doc

Firecore convert.

There's a green line across the bottom of the screen on all movies played through the media player. Any thoughts as to why?

Submitted by Anon on April 2, 2011 - 4:13pm

yes you are light, I noticed the green line at the bottom too. Slideshow feature is good, but we need more hold on it to customize.

Have you got any ideas. Have restarted lowtide as well. My manage extras menu is not updated like it should be either.

Well installed here. Works fine but got to say that it is really to laggy compared to xmbc when navigating through NAS content. Anyway, continue this great job this is still an early promissing release !!!

Installed whithout any problem

My NAS is a freebox revolution who don't currently serve AFP protocol but only SMB ....  ( i know that you are working on SMB, so i will wait to test player ^^ )

as GRANDxADMIRAL i will ask if you plan to implement a volume control into your player.

Submitted by doctauri on April 3, 2011 - 11:20am

Hopefully not, I think that'd be a waste of functionality, better served with the TV remote.

Hi,

Looks like a good one (media player). I haven't managed to make it work with my TC. It appears automatically within the list then I setup the login and pwd....when i try to connect to it...an error occured.
The worst is that I can see that the access has been granted from the TC logfile... any idea?

thks

I'm looking forward to larger video files and mkv compatibility Smile Otherwise works great with my avi collection. The larger files (1-2gb) will give me an "out of memory" error though.. But if you're like me and have a bunch of 700mb movies this will do the trick! Looking forward to more updates Tongue

Can you guys let me know which NAS can work with media player?

Submitted by aguano on April 4, 2011 - 3:01am

Just did a clean jailbreak (4.3.1) with the new Pwnage Tool released today. Then I installed aTV. Now I have the problem that I can´t install some packages (i.e. Mediaplayer, XMBC etc.) because afpfs-ng is missing. I also can´t install afpfs-ng via nitoTV or ssh. Any ideas?

Submitted by iawa2k on April 4, 2011 - 3:02am

Thought I would post this here as well as the new version has still not resolved this and never really got a definitive answer:

As others are having problems with AFP shares as well as me can you specify some instructions please? If I let the ATV2 pick up the server automatically it appears in the list (as it does on my other mac), I select it and it pre fills in my details: Name: MyServerName Host: MyServersIP Login: (blank) Password: (blank) So I fill in the user/pass with my servers admin creds as I do on my mac (which allows access to the shares straight away) but if I do that on my ATV2 I go to My Files, the click on MyServerName under the Remote section and my shares appear (one for Movies and one for TV), great I think but when I click on one it thinks for a second and comes straight back with: An error occurred. AFP connection failed:unrreachable  network or incorrect login/password As it works on my mac I assume this is trying to do something different? Is it using a different port etc? I have tried filling in the Host field with the server name rather than IP and also the full path to the folder, also tried afp://servername/movies and afp://serverIP/movies, nothing works! - will trying afp://username:password@servername/ShareName work or is it not designed to work that way? Please help as this is what I have been wanting from day one!!

Does this player support mp4 movies with embedded 3gp subtitles??

the aTV supports it very well (like any other iOS device) but I'm really interested in the NAS capabilities of the aTVFlash Media Player.

Thanks!

Had to try several times before Media Player actually installed. It froze on installing and the rebooting, this happened 4-5 times, installed the other extras fine, except with Remote HD, this also happened only twice.

Used the http://forum.xbmc.org/showpost.php?p=766977&postcount=22 fix and was able to install Media Player. Removed NitoTV but every file I try to play with MP the ATV gets restarted. I don't have XBMC installed.
