If I update my Apple TV to 4.2.2, will I have to loose my jailbreak and have to set it up all over again? Sorry for the Noob question.

Submitted by Anon on May 13, 2011 - 7:50am

hello,

Apple TV has last year stopped producing the white Apple TV with the 160GB memory.

Instead it is now selling the Apple TV black with very small memory only to store the operating softwares.

I still use the older version Apple Tv, the one with 160Gb memory. It has the white color, not black.
I use the aTV Flash version 4.1.5. and it works fine.

Now I see that there is a new version of aTV Flash 4.2.2 for Apple Tv, and it mensions it is specific for the black Apple TV.

Does that mean that the new aTV Flash 4.2.2 is not compatible with the older Apple Tv's (white) or is it compatible ???

Please answer me !

If it is not compatible, how can I download the older version 4.1.5. if my Apple TV white needs to be re-installed.

Thank you very much for a fast reply

Philip

still crashing with memory errors.  some files are better but not all..  I was hoping to just use this.  whats the biggest file it will play?

My only issue with the new Beta is that some 16:9 movies are still 4:3 and haven't been fixed–or at least a toggle put in to switch them back. Other movies are perfectly fine in 16:9. Any advice?

Submitted by Anon on May 13, 2011 - 8:19am

Seconded! Great job on this, firecore, it's a dream come true. Now all we need is better metadata fetching and better memory management/codec support to allow us to play large hidef files in Media Player and we are pretty much there!

Submitted by james on May 13, 2011 - 9:13am

This is a known issue, and will be resolved soon.

Submitted by Smg71 on May 13, 2011 - 9:14am

I'm having the same issue. Other than this its working well.

Please resolve quickly...

The latest version of AppleTV software for the silver AppleTV is 3.0.2, the 4.0+ versions are only for the new black AppleTV.

The latest version of aTV Flash for the silver models is 4.2.1.

You can check the version you're running through the Maintenance --> About menu.

Which tool was used for the jailbreak?

Submitted by james on May 13, 2011 - 9:22am

You can update to Beta5 through the Maintenance --> Manage Extras menu.

Updating the Maintenance item will update all the core components. Once updated, you can confirm you are running Beta5 through the Maintenance --> About menu.

The core player is still undergoing heavy development, and should see a huge bump in performance soon.

Submitted by james on May 13, 2011 - 9:25am

Unfortunately not, but this feature may be added down the road.

Submitted by james on May 13, 2011 - 9:26am

After updating the Media Player you may need to setup your NAS share again. Sorry. Frown

Love to hear this... I was a bit worried I wasted my money on the Apple tv.  A lot of friends told me it can't handle HD and when I installed your producted then every file I had crashed I felt a bit stupid. I was even considering re-ecoding my library to a smaller codec, but I will hold off.

Still I must commend you guys and can't wait to see the next rev.

I agree... audi channel + subtitle will make it much better.

Can I ask to add the plugin Grooveshark?

First of all great work on the new media player, SMB works great!!

Any chances of getting an MMS support with media player ?

Submitted by Anon on May 13, 2011 - 12:14pm

Can you please explain, how do I use PLEX with the new apple tv ?

Do i still need to run from my computer ?

Submitted by bnick3 on May 13, 2011 - 3:54pm

SMB is working great, connects quickly whithout problems.  As you know MKV files (3-4gb) give an out of memory error.  Please consider iso codec support.

The photo slideshow is great.  Kinda slo to get started, but no slower than the apple tv version.  Please consider offering the option to change the background to something other than white as well as change the type of transition.

Playing movies ripped to apple tv setting in handbrake work great, except for one where the Apple TV just shut off in the middle of the movie after about 30 minutes.  Never happened again.

Great work!

Submitted by Anon on May 13, 2011 - 5:12pm

I've ripped 2 DVDs with Mactheripper and Shared it As a video ts Folder. I Cant Manövers in the DVD menues. Tested it with iso files and it does Not work too.

Do i somerhing wrong?

Or is it a Known issue?

Being a dumb arse at this, how do I setup NAS from windows PC to stream movies?

Submitted by tmontague on May 13, 2011 - 9:33pm

Just updated to Beta5, installed Media Player and added my Iomega Home Media NAS... when I try to browse to it I get "Could not open dir (smb://MEDIA-NAS/Movies). Reason: Invalid Argument (22)"

Any ideas what this means and how to fix it?? XBMC accesses this share just fine!!

Thanks in advance...

I have finally purchased ATV Flash Black. It was on my TODO list, but the lack of SMB support was a no go for me. SMB now works, and I must say that it is very simple to setup your media shares with ATV Flash Black. Well done.

Yes, there are a few issues with the player (DVD's not displaying properly, HD video memory issues, metadata not correct, etc.), but I'm sure these will be ironed out in no time. Bottom line is: most videos will work. Plus, I'm sure that the number of people who have purchased ATV Flash Black in the past couple of days must have increased dramatically, giving the developers a boost Wink

Cheers,

Fred

I want Streaming from my ATV to my iphone/ipad WITHOUT a TV, when i on travel/camping, like a tizi. Is that possible?

Submitted by Anon on May 14, 2011 - 1:57am

nice work. But i'm still waiting for support of *.TS files recorded from digital tv.

Submitted by Anon on May 14, 2011 - 4:36am

Great work, streaming videos is working through Media, but movie files are often stuttering and pausing. Any idea on what I can do to improve the streming performance?

Submitted by james on May 14, 2011 - 6:53am

There are some playback issues with certain file types in the current version.

Once the lightweight player is added these will be resolved.

Hey Guys,

the beta5 release is a big step into the right direction, I already enjoy it very much! Keep up the great work and please, stay focused on the core functionality, which from my point of view is the media player. There already is enough media-center software which has tons of features of which nothing works perfectly. I'd go as far to say that the package should only contain the Browser, MediaPlayer and the Weather plugin if those work 100% and are consistently localized.

Some things I observed in this release:

  • Some MPG files lose audio/video sync while playing back. These were recorded from satellite TV with DVBViewer. While this might be because of errors in the satellite stream they were playing back fine on a trekstor antarius box.
  • mp4 videos which I recorded with an iPhone 4 play stuttering and cause a low memory warning. The same files play fine when streamed from iTunes to the AppleTV natively
  • DVD backups played from a Windows Homeserver don't respect the language set in the AppleTV. I expected them to pick up the AppleTV menu language automatically
  • Localisation issues: Some Texts are localized, most not. For a perfect, apple-like experience I'd like to see the GUI consistently localized. I'd volunteer to provide a german translation if that helps.
  • Metadata retrieval also doesn't respect the menu language, descriptions are all in english

Questions / Suggestions:

  • Metadata retrieval should be configurable on share or even folder level, because its nice for dvd backups but nearly useless for TV recordings. Then, it would be cool if own metadata could be provided along with the video files, like for instance a folder named like the video file containing a cover.jpg and some sort of description.xml. If such folder is present, then it should override the internet metadata.
  • I only got stereo sound when playing back although the dvd backups definitely have DD5.1 or DTS sound. Is that an issue or did I do something wrong?

Thanks!

Timo

I have JBed my ATV and installed Firecore on ATV2 with 4.2.2 firmware. My primary intention is to watch embedded videos bollywood movies on some foreign sites. Firecore could not find these embedded videos. I hope fire core team will fix this before final release. I'm not quite happy with out this feature on Firecore.

@Anonymous (not verified)

*.TS files play in Media Player as of Beta 5 installed last night. Mine were recorded by a Dreambox DM7000 with a Neutrino firmware from 2007 and played back over a SMB share using a wired network connection. The DM7000 records to a NFS volume on a Windows server - which shares the files via SMB to the ATV2.

I did have a few files play a static single frame for the duration of the recording

again and again,

Don't work...

I miss the good old iOS - this fucking autoupdate for 3month crashed ATV flash and now there is no satisfactory solution for this time.

SMB don't work!!! (smb://ip, smb//ip, ip ec -> afp Connection failed - in xbmc it is founded)
mkv Files Crashs or Run slowly
5.1 no comment - Error Error Error

I don't know for what i had payed for 3month........

I installed Beta 5 on my black Apple TV with 4.2.2. Jail break was with Seas0npass. Installation of beta 5 was very smooth. My primary aim to install it was to get web browser which I get now.

I have following issues: 1. Coming out of the browser, apparently reboots the system which is annoying.

  1. I was looking at BMWUSA.com site and noticed that video links on the page dont work.
  2. I also installed Remote HD but that works so slow. Not sure if this is Apple's problem. It looks I wasted $4.99 to download it from Apple web store.
  3. Arrow pointer response is very sluggish.

Problem 1 is very annoying. To resolve issue 2 above, do I need to install flash separely or enable it? I have iPhone 4 with 4.3.3 installed.

Submitted by boske111 on May 15, 2011 - 4:39am

that's it! even simple mp4 files stuckin if i run them with the media player. since the first time i used my apple tv 2 720p mkv files running smoothly in xbmc! what's the problem, the difficulty to bring a working solution to the media player? for sure, i paid for a beta software. but it seems firecore isn't able to solve and complete the progress anyway. how sad a fate...

Submitted by LarsLauritzen on May 15, 2011 - 6:04am

You can find the god old firmware here http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=970)

I instaled this one 4.2.1: AppleTV2,1_4.2.1_8C154_Restore.ipsw

And then JB with Greenp0ision and after that aTV Flash Beta 5

i must say i´m happy with that.

Lars.

The media player is still struggling with larger files, when fast forwarding it stalls & freezes when you try to play again. The picture is still slightly jerky have also had the out of memory a couple of times.

hi,

smb and movies are working great! just in case ur the same idiot as me, after installing beta5, the media player is not automatically updated to the new version!

what to do:

open the "manage extras" menu in maintenance and click on the media browser. it will update and now you should be able to add smb shares in the media player section!

thx guys!

you rock

When I cut the recordings of eye-tv (removing the tv-advertising) and define the screen format (16:9 or 4:3 ), I can play the movie via afp in a very good quality. I just make a release of the eye-tv folder of my macmini. It works wonderful - so I have a good videorecord on my mac and I can see the movies via atv2 on my 40" tv.

Everything whithout a new encoding and with a minimum of cpu working.

Thank you for your good work !
