Happy Friday! Today we are pleased to present you with another major update to Media Player for the 2nd gen (black) AppleTV. Version 0.7 adds a number of exciting new features (especially for our friends outside the US) and resolves a number of pesky bugs. All in all, a solid update that moves us one step closer to the final version!

What's new in Media Player 0.7?

  • Added new playback menu (hold select during playback)
  • Added support for .srt subtitles
  • Added support for multiple audio tracks
  • Added support for chapters
  • Added support for localized metadata
  • Added support for local cover art
  • Added option to refetch metadata for a specific file
  • Added option to clear all metadata
  • Added toggle setting for volume control
  • Improved metadata fetching (courtesy of themoviedb.org)
  • Improved progress bar controls
  • Improved DVD playback and ff/rw controls
  • Improved audio track selection logic
  • Resolved aspect ratios issues for certain video types
  • Resolved file browsing related crashes
  • Resolved metadata fetching related crashes
  • Resolved audio queue related errors
  • Resolved Top Shelf related playback issues
  • Resolved playback related memory leaks
  • Minor UI improvements
  • Many other miscellaneous fixes

What can I do with the playback menu?

The new playback menu provides quick access to chapters, audio tracks and subtitles. To access this menu simply press and hold the center (select) button during playback. Press the menu button to return to the movie.

Note: Chapter controls can also be accessed by pressing the down arrow on the remote during playback.

Spectacular! Now how do I get it?

With aTV Flash (black) installed, Media Player 0.7 can be downloaded on your ATV2 through the Maintenance --> Manage Extras menu. If you need to re-install aTV Flash (black) links for the latest version can be found under the Downloads tab in your account.

New users can pre-order aTV Flash (black) here.

Enjoy!

There is still room for improvement in this area...are you streaming via wifi or ethernet?

Submitted by james on August 13, 2011 - 10:50am

Great. Thanks for your feedback.

Which version of AppleTV software are you running? We've had a few reports of issues like this when running an older version.

Submitted by james on August 13, 2011 - 10:51am

The latest version can be installed through the Maintenance --> Manage Extras menu.

Are you considering a bug fix update next time to take care of some of the issues presented here, or will you take longer and also add new features? I would prefer a quick bug fix update, and then happily wait for new features in a future update.

Thank you for the 0.7 update - super work.

I've problem with 4.1.1. (rebooting all time).. going to re-jeailbread with newer version

Submitted by ianm.6743 on August 13, 2011 - 3:15pm

A couple issues:

  • Is there a way to use chapter skipping (normally by hitting down button) with the volume control enabled?  Both great features and I want both at the same time!
  • Sometimes during playback the video stutters for a few moments.  The the audio is fine just the video seems to lower to maybe a few fps.  If I let it continue for 5-10 seconds it seems to fix itself.  If I pause and restart the video and audio are out of sync...which can be fixed by rewinding a few seconds.  Is this a known issue?

Just happened now -- here's the syslog showing the fps going down to 10 fps for the average period.  No other errors.

[log removed]

Other than those, the 0.7 installed no problem on my ATV and haven't had one crash/reset after several hours of playing...great work!!

After my initial problems I re-jailbroke the ATV2 and then reloaded ATV Flash.  Things seemed to be working pretty well.  But I was watching a ripped movie and about 1.5 hrs into the movie I got an error message about low memory.  I couldn't clear it to restart the movie, and then the ATV locked up again, and I had to power it off to get it restarted.   Any ideas if this problem can be fixed on my end, or will it take a code fix?

Yeah strangely enough it worked fine for me for a day and now hangs every time I even select Media! Going to have to re-break and reinstall as suggested here.

Appreciate some of the improvements. However I can watch about an hour of a movie and Mediaplayer 0.7 crashes and just goes back to the AppleTV menu. I'm using OS 4.2.2, Jailbreak with most recent Seasonpass. This happens over Wifi and Ethernet

Hi,

Do you have a manual? You list a lot of neat features, but as a new atv2 owner I'm having difficulty finding the menus?

was very curious and updated the media player. When I tried to load a movie the screen shows loading but crashed 2 sec later. aTv restarted again. So restored the atv software (v 4.2.1 (4.1.1) and did a jailbreak with the newest seas0npass and installed the aTv Flash (black) again. Tried again to play a movie (ripped movie and dvd-movie) but media player crashed again while showing the loading message. So I am unable to test the update. Hope for a quick hotfix. :(

Thanks so far.

  • MKV File (720p.BluRay.AC3.x264) gives no subs here.

Kind regards,

Hi James,
What about Xvid support? When I try to load any avi file, I get "Playback Error".
Another question - is metadata works for TV shows as well? if so, then how should I name the files in order to get the right data?
note - when you put a film poster inside the library (for use when no metadata is available), then it doesn't appear on the main menu under "recently watched". Instead, there's a random frame. I guess it's a fixable bug.
Thanks!

Buy an ATV2 and get on board with the 21st century? They're a hundred bucks, and they have the capability to do more than the original ATV can.

Why would a developer spend programming cycles updating what is essentially finished code when they could be developing code for new features on newer, better hardware?

Submitted by Anon on August 14, 2011 - 11:24pm

Overall really happy with Firecore software for ATV2. I experience however many unexpected reboots when using the mediaplayer for no obvious reasons. I hope it will become more stable.

Still can't play .iso and witht mkv there's no subtitle

After update do not working Frown

Submitted by Anon on August 15, 2011 - 6:42am

Hi! Great improvement on subtitle support.

If I may suggest, the encoding should be pre-setted. That way some of us wouldn't have to choose the type on every movie/episode. Me for example always use Western (ISO Latin 1).

Other than that...JUST GREAT!

Submitted by spsantos on August 15, 2011 - 7:58am

Had the same problem, re-ran Seas0nPass, re-installed aTV Flash (black) and now much more stable.

Hey guys,

Can someone tell me how to use local cover art for the media player metadata?  With the new release, I have a lot more mis-labled movies than I did before (i.e. Iron Man metadata shows up as Iron Man 2, X-men shows up as X-Men Origins - Wolverine etc.).  I read elsewhere on this forum that you can't do anything about the movie summary, but I would at least like to replace the movie art.  I also get the "low on memory" error when playing back multiple dvd rips (video_ts, .vob).  What causes this?  I usually have to re-start the ATV2 to clear it out and it seems fine for awhile.  Thanks!

Submitted by Anon on August 15, 2011 - 8:41am

Works great but:
- move subtitle encode settiongs into global settings, it's really annoying to set proper encoding for each movie
- add subtitle settings like text color (primary yellow), text size and optional black border
- please write more about "support for local cover art" - file name, best image size etc.
- remove white rounded border on buffering box Smile

Great work!

Submitted by Anon on August 15, 2011 - 10:16am

Where you can choose subtitle encoding ?

Submitted by james on August 15, 2011 - 11:04am

Thanks for your feedback. Here are some things we're planning for the next version.

  1. Subtitle settings will remain in the same area, but will be persistent for all files.
  2. Subtitle size, color, and border options will be available in the same menu (also persistent).
  3. White buffering/loading box border removed.

The way local cover art works is if you have a movie and image file (in the same folder) with the same name, MP will use that image instead of downloading one.

E.G. Inception.mp4 and Inception.jpg

Any more ideas or suggestions just let us know. :)

Submitted by james on August 15, 2011 - 11:05am

Subtitle encoding can be adjusted through the Subtitles section found in the Playback menu (press/hold select during playback).

Submitted by james on August 15, 2011 - 11:11am

We've switched movie metadata APIs, though we still need a way to cycle through movies with similar names (when an incorrect movie is found). A workaround for now would be to add the release year to your movie name and reload metadata for that file. E.G. "X-men (2000)"

If you prefer just to override the cover art, you can place an image with the same name alongside the movie. E.G. X-Men.mp4 and X-Men.jpg

This version includes a number of memory leak fixes, but we're still working on a few more. Additionally, there are some 3rd party plugins that leak memory like a sieve, so it's best to remove any 3rd party plugins you don't find yourself using.

Fixed in the next version. :)

Which version of AppleTV software are you using? 4.2.2 is the recommended version.

Submitted by james on August 15, 2011 - 11:13am

Good to hear. Do you recall the version of AppleTV software you were previously running?

Submitted by james on August 15, 2011 - 11:14am

Thanks for the feedback. TV Show metadata is coming soon, and we'll look into the top shelf cover art issue.

If you're able to submit a bug report about your xvid playback issue we can also look into that.

Are you using .srt subtitles, or does the MKV file have embedded subs?

Hmm, if you can submit a bug report as described here we can look into what's going on.

Unfortunately if you have volume control enabled the only way to skip through chapters is by using the Playback menu. Sorry. :(

If you can submit a bug report as described in the link below we'll look further into your playback issue.

We're working to resolve a number of issues that have popped up and hope to have a new version this week.

That said, a large number of the reported issues have been attributed to using an outdated AppleTV software version. Re-jailbreaking with the latest version and re-installing aTV Flash (black) seems to clear up most issues.

Submitted by james on August 15, 2011 - 11:24am

We're looking into a few similar issues, but if you can submit a bug report report we can be sure to look into your specific problem.

For Cyrillic subtitles you will need to change the encoding setting found in the Subtitle section of the Playback menu.
