Happy Friday! Today we are pleased to present you with another major update to Media Player for the 2nd gen (black) AppleTV. Version 0.7 adds a number of exciting new features (especially for our friends outside the US) and resolves a number of pesky bugs. All in all, a solid update that moves us one step closer to the final version!

What's new in Media Player 0.7?

  • Added new playback menu (hold select during playback)
  • Added support for .srt subtitles
  • Added support for multiple audio tracks
  • Added support for chapters
  • Added support for localized metadata
  • Added support for local cover art
  • Added option to refetch metadata for a specific file
  • Added option to clear all metadata
  • Added toggle setting for volume control
  • Improved metadata fetching (courtesy of themoviedb.org)
  • Improved progress bar controls
  • Improved DVD playback and ff/rw controls
  • Improved audio track selection logic
  • Resolved aspect ratios issues for certain video types
  • Resolved file browsing related crashes
  • Resolved metadata fetching related crashes
  • Resolved audio queue related errors
  • Resolved Top Shelf related playback issues
  • Resolved playback related memory leaks
  • Minor UI improvements
  • Many other miscellaneous fixes

What can I do with the playback menu?

The new playback menu provides quick access to chapters, audio tracks and subtitles. To access this menu simply press and hold the center (select) button during playback. Press the menu button to return to the movie.

Note: Chapter controls can also be accessed by pressing the down arrow on the remote during playback.

Spectacular! Now how do I get it?

With aTV Flash (black) installed, Media Player 0.7 can be downloaded on your ATV2 through the Maintenance --> Manage Extras menu. If you need to re-install aTV Flash (black) links for the latest version can be found under the Downloads tab in your account.

New users can pre-order aTV Flash (black) here.

Hi, thanks for the .srt support but would appreciate if you can add Arabic support
''Arabic(windows-1256)'' and ''Arabic ISO 8859-6)''

Is it possible to revert back to the previous version as I am experiencing so many problems with this update:
1. Some of my avi's now won't play
2. The metadata takes forever to load
3. The player keeps re-booting for no good reason whilst watching a movie.

None of the above happened with the previous player.

I would really appreciate it if someone could explain how to downgrade to the previous stable version or is there an alternative player?

Can we have the names that media player looks for local cover art names to be able to be changed so we don't have to change all our cover art. Mine are all named folder.jpg. A custom name option would be great.

I love your Media (video) player.  Although, it seems to limit with 480p resolution... (prob. hardware decoding issue...)

Can you please look into supporting "smi"  subtitle extension (Korean)?   The subtitle seems works on XBMC, but I like your media player BETTER over XBMC.

The update is super!

It will be perfect with DLNA support. Will this be available with the final version?

Submitted by Anon on August 16, 2011 - 10:40am

Yes i would definatly agree that 3rd party plugins affect the performance of the apple tv, I have been steaming dvds (video_ts files) from my nas none stop since the media player update was released and Ive only had a few crashes and i havent seen a memory error at all, on top of that the few crashes i did have where whilst i was navigating folders on my nas (I sent in bug reports so hopefully these will be looked at for the next update) the dvd streaming has been flawless for me, but then again I only have media player and couch server pro installed.

By the sounds of it my experience with the media player has been a bit more stable than others though, however I am very impressed with it, the nas streaming ability is excellent and after a few seconds buffering i am able to watch a whole film without interruption, no crashing or memory errors.

I just need to keep reminding myself the software is still in beta!

Great work guys!

Good morning.
I can't download Media Player, because it there isn't in my Maintenance --> Manage Extras menu.
Why ?
How can I risolve the problem ?

Submitted by Anon on August 17, 2011 - 12:15am

Love your work. This is a great addition to ATV. The media player recognizes VIDEO_TS files as an ISO but will not actually recognize an ISO file. Is there a fix in the works?

Submitted by james on August 17, 2011 - 8:43am

ISO support should be coming in a future version.

Submitted by james on August 17, 2011 - 8:44am

It sounds like you may be running an older AppleTV software version.

Please re-jailbreak with Seas0nPass to update your AppleTV to 4.2.2.

Submitted by james on August 17, 2011 - 8:45am

Hmm, which AppleTV software version are you running?

Can you send in a bug report?

Submitted by tj.sandrin on August 18, 2011 - 9:53am

Congrats on the work!

My only issus is that my video are Buffering every 5min for 30second to 1min each time!
Is theyre any way I can stop this buffering or download the movie fully before playing?

Also, I will lik to have the opportunity to select from what folder I will like to choose video from!

Thanks for your updates!

Nice, no, perfect solution for the samba problem with xbmc and Lion

Can i play mp3 music with this media player ? I try to play my mp3 music with this media player 0.7 but this media player can't read the file (empty) :(

My ATV sometimes getting error low memory while playing mkv file but it works again after hard reset (power off). I also found sometimes my ATV restarted during playing a movie (after 30 minutes playing). My ATv on 4.2.2.

Hopefully getting solution about these.

Submitted by darrenh.4522 on August 19, 2011 - 2:12am

Have just installed and fairly impressed so far. Only issue found so far is playback of .mpg and .wmv files stuttering quite badly.
Is this something likely to be resolved in future releases as they play fine in xbmc?

Submitted by Anon on August 19, 2011 - 5:43pm

I used .srt sub with mkv file. The media player can detect the .srt sub, and it was selected. But the sub was not displayed when movie is screening.

Submitted by Anon on August 20, 2011 - 8:52pm

Having problems with getting afp to work through Media Player. I'm trying to hook up to my NAS. I can hook up from my laptop using AFP, and Media Player can detect the NAS when I go to "add share", but when I try to setup the share with u/p, test the connection, it says it can't connect due to network or bad u/p.
Is there some other way to test this? I have been able to ssh onto the tav and connect to my NAS using afpcmd. However, I noticed that there is no /sbin/mount_afp, so I'm thinking it might not be installed correctly or something.

Any help would be appreciated!

i really like your soft and the new media player works great... so great that i´m not using xbmc since you posted 0.7 version..

i only have a issue ... will you add strech or 16:9 adjustment for 4:3 media??

if you add this i´m buying this NOW!!!

Thank you

Submitted by Anon on August 21, 2011 - 6:06am

Hello, i really like your soft... i like so much that since you released 0.7 version, i´m not using XBMC...

the only think i miss is that playing 4:3 aspect media i can´t strech to fit or adapt to 16:9 tv.. so there are two big vertical lines on both sides of my TV.

Will you add this feature?? If you do i´m really buying this soft.

Thank you and congrats for your work..

Sorry... duplicated post.... i did not see my previous in top.

Will the final version contain FLAC support. That is the only thing missing for me.

Submitted by andrewm.0716 on August 22, 2011 - 10:36am

Purchased the beta (6) over the weekend, jailbreaked, and installed OS 4.3 (Black).  Have set it up to read SMB NAS with collection of both home movies and rips, xvid and so on and that works fabulously.  Two questions, and I am not sure whether these are bugs, or simply things not developed yet (is there a published final functionality target?):

1.Is there no support for music MP3?  In a folder on my NAS where there are clearly MP3, ATVFlash shows no MP3's.  Is there a music player in the works?

2.I can see my collection of family photos and ATVFlash reads them (albeit slowly).  Clicking on a photo brings it up, and click 'right' gives a nice scroll effect to the next photo, but trying to leave that mode crashes the ATV.

Submitted by Anon on August 22, 2011 - 11:11am

The same problem, previous version of media player connected to AFP NAS smoothly.

Please, help.

Submitted by vasily on August 22, 2011 - 11:41am

I have the same problem. Interestingly, iMac and TimeCapsule located it the same network connected via AFP successfully, as well as I can connect to NAS via SAMBA, but not AFP, which is still tell that the network or U/p are incorrect

AWESOME!! I have been using WD media player since it came out. Just recently updated to the ATV, and your software. This blows the WD media player out of the water! The apple TV is great but your software makes it unbelievable. I am totally nerding out with my new toy, my kids think it is the coolest thing ever!
Thank you!!!

Submitted by gazfrancis on August 23, 2011 - 4:42am

Hi, love the software, good job, I downloaded and installed both seanonpass and ATVflash last night and it went well. Just having a problem with 2 things really.

  1. im dumbstruck that the media player does not play music files. as watching movies and playing my music is what i wanted this for.
  2. XBMC, im not too fond of this (prefer media player) i point is to my NAS on smb, it sees the music files (mp3's mostly) but as soon as i press play on any of the music files, the ATv2 freezes and i have to unplug and restart.

adding music support to media player would be fantastic especially if there was playlist support.

Good job all round. thanks.

Hi, I'm having some problems with .SRT subtitles files. Anyone else with the same problem ???

In brazilian portuguese, we have some words with accents:

á, é, ê, í, ó, ú, ç

But every word that has accents does not shows properly on the screen. Look this example:

Actor: " I'm going to get you "

Subtitle (correct): " Eu vou ir aí pegar você "

What shows on screen: " Eu vou ir %6 pegar v#%^@ "

(just in case, playing the same files in my computer with VLC, it works well, no problem at all...)

So please, fix this issue.

Thank you and congrats.

streaming from my NAS i had problems streaming .mp4 and .m4v movies larger than 4GB-> mediaplayer 0.7.1 said "playback error".

I have no problems playing .mkv - movies of any size, even if encoded as 1080p.

Submitted by glandix on August 23, 2011 - 6:38pm

Are there any guides on how to work with local metadata?  I have a few movies where it's grabbing the wrong metadata and, unlike other similar apps like XBMC, I can't override the incorrect metadata :(

Submitted by glandix on August 23, 2011 - 6:40pm

Are there any plans to support all playback buttons (for example, I'm using my Onkyo receiver's universal remote, which AppleTV "learned"), but in Media Player stuff, I'm limited to only using the d-pad and menu button) ... it would be great if we could actually use play, pause, ff, rw, skip forward/back, jump forward/back in Media Player, too!

Submitted by james on August 24, 2011 - 8:58am

Can you send in a bug report?

Submitted by james on August 24, 2011 - 8:58am

You may need to adjust the encoding type through the Playback menu. The Playback menu can be accessed by holding the center (select) button while a movie is playing.

Submitted by james on August 24, 2011 - 8:59am

Support for music files is coming in the next version. :)

Submitted by james on August 24, 2011 - 9:00am

Awesome. Glad to hear it's working well for you.

I'm trying to assign local artwork to some DVD rips (Vob files, but am having no joy, any trick to that?

Submitted by beat84 on August 24, 2011 - 3:02pm

I have some problems with audio/video sync.. after about 15 minutes of playing, video stops for a while and then audio is out of sync.

I'm using the latest version of aTV Flash (black) and Apple TV software.

I wanted to note that I blew it.  I'd posted that AC3 pass-through was not working for me but I was 2 versions behind.  After updating to 0.7, AC3 pass-through is working just lovely - thanks!  Not quite ready to give up XBMC yet but if this heads in the right direction, you'll have a fan, especially since I can use iDentify to set up my meta-data anyway I like.

Come on, Music Player!

Thanks, Team!

Submitted by michaelh.9337 on August 24, 2011 - 6:33pm

That is to say, I'd updated to 0.6, but not 0.7.

Submitted by Anon on August 24, 2011 - 11:05pm

I am having the same issue.
I can't pause movies or it will freeze my ATV.
trying to play movies will often give me an "out of memory" error.
this release seems a lot more buggier than the previous.
I had to reset (unplug) my ATV 5 times before it was able to play anything.
please get on the ball with this software.
I am spending way too much time resetting my ATV because of all the "freezing" caused by the media player.

Submitted by Dozer on August 27, 2011 - 5:41am

Does media player not play DVD's that don't have a DVD menu?

I've DVD's that were ripped without the DVD menu or DVD extras, just the main feature.  When I try to play these media player crashes.
If I play DVD's with a menu structure it's ok.

Submitted by Anon on August 27, 2011 - 8:09am

I do not know how to get Media Player working. where can i find a tutorial? I'm using MAC OS 10.7.1

Submitted by Anon on August 27, 2011 - 11:31am

that would be an awesome idea because for TV shows, I don't want to have 24 JPGs of the same cover art with different file names to correspond with the name of each episode. it would be nice to have folder.jpg and that would automatically show the cover art for all the episodes in that season's folder.

Same problem with german subtitles. The characters ä, ü, ö and ß are replaced by other characters which makes the subtitles very hard to read...

Submitted by Anon on August 29, 2011 - 5:11am

Mh... I've used aTV Flash Beta6, but I didn't have "Media Player" in my Maintance menu... Any idea? :(

Hello, once again great work guys.

I have, with other persons in here, problems with playing my movies at times.

After 5 min., it stalls for 10 sec while buffering, and does so true the movie every 5 min.
Some movie it wont play at all, before saying OK, to "this movie might not play at your appleTV"...

But the funny part is, that it is only 50% of the movies, that is the problem. Wich leads me to say, it's an encoding problem and not the firecore-software? Agree?…
