We are pleased to announce the release aTV Flash (black) Beta7 for the 2nd generation AppleTV.

Beta7 is a major update for aTV Flash (black) and brings a number of great new features to the 2nd gen AppleTV including music playback, Last.fm powered artist slideshows, cloud backups and more.

Keep reading to learn more about what's new.

Music Playback

A new music player has been built into Media Player, which allows you to stream most music file types from a Mac, PC or NAS drive without using iTunes. During playback, album art, track info, and artist images will automatically be downloaded from Last.fm. Artist images are used in slideshows that can be viewed while music is playing in the background. Support for folder playlists is also included.

During playback you can navigate away from the current track, and a new 'Now Playing' option will appear in the main menu which allows you to quickly jump back into your playlist.

Cloud Backups

We've added a new cloud backup feature that provides a way to easily backup all your 3rd party (Firecore, XBMC, Plex, etc...) settings and data to the cloud. Once backed up, a list of your previously saved backups will be available allowing you to to easily restore one of them if needed.

Backups are stored securely in the cloud and will remain linked to the AppleTV's serial number - this means they will always be available even if you update or restore your AppleTV.

Metadata Views

Media Player now features three distinct options for viewing different types of metadata. The the left (<<) and right (>>) buttons can be used to cycle through the views when browsing through your media. More details on each view can be found below.
  1. General (default) view - This is the first view and contains a portion of the synopsis, and other info like who's in the movie and when it was released.
  2. Synopsis view - This is the second view and shows the full movie synopsis.
  3. Technical view - This is the third view and shows technical information about the video file.

Submitted by Anon on September 6, 2011 - 11:20pm

I know that, but I'd like to add more folders than one since I've got an artists different albums in different folders.

Would be nice if you could add more folders in to the current playlist, i.e. the queue.

Functions like shuffle and repeat would be appreciated as well.

Still, a great update

Any chance of custom mp3 internet radio stream playback for Media Player as mp3-files are now supported? I listen a lot of finnish internet radios and none of them are listed in the basic AppleTV's "internet radio" app. Could this be done with a folder of playlist files that contains the URL of stream?

Somehow i´m missing the points "movies", "music", "shared" and now playing under "media". I only see "My files" and "Settings".

Hey

Why can I not install updates through Mantenance.

I've have a message coming up, E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg-configure-a' to correct problem.

Submitted by Anon on September 7, 2011 - 1:38am

Is anyone aware if there is a plan to support m2ts streams.

Submitted by djwhite on September 7, 2011 - 1:44am

I had the same problem.

Try running the download      "aTVFlash-black.exe" from your windows PC.

This worked for me.

Hi,

@James:

I have a problem with VOB-Files at the media player. I've ripped all my DVD's to one VOB-File and exact this file type is stuttering all the time. AVI's are running perfect.

I'm running on a ATV2 with FW4.3, jailbreak with Seasonpass (newest), updates to beta 7 and media player 0.8 are done.

I'm using only a cabled gigabit network connection.

Can I do something to improve this? It's very important for me and I'm not willing to use XBMC or something else.

BR,

Olli

Обновился ... Полет нормальный! Спасибо пацаны! Продолжайте в том же духе!

Submitted by Anon on September 7, 2011 - 2:25am

Hi,
i ve just updated to 0.7, cause i´m really keen on the audio/music support. When i try to open the directory on my NAS (USB storage attached to a tp-link router via smb) the apple TV just crashes while indexing he directory (The mp3 storage is about 60 gig - maybe to big?). Is there a chance to build a database (like xbmc) to avoid indexing all the directory every time I open the section? It would be much faster (if it doesent crash in future :-))

And please please ad a search engine for faster navigation in big directories

Anyway, thanks for all the great work!

Will it play iTunes protected content? (Music & video)

Submitted by gunnarp.2619 on September 7, 2011 - 3:26am

Hi, I am missing (like others) the points "movies", "music", "shared" and now playing under "media". Without these the additional options are not very useful. Thanks for your help

Submitted by Cedro on September 7, 2011 - 3:47am

Hi,

you have to set the directories you want as FAVORITE by yourself. After that it will appear at the main screen!

Now playing only appear if you're playing MUSIC and go back to main screen at the same time.

Submitted by dsan on September 7, 2011 - 4:01am

Cedro,

"you have to set the directories you want as FAVORITE by yourself"

How do you do this? I can't find Favorite!

thanks

Submitted by Cedro on September 7, 2011 - 4:28am

If you have found the right directory at MY FILES, press and hold the ENTER button (2 sec.), the context menu will appear. Set the folder as FAVORITE. That's it. :-)

Thanks for the update. I can see you are trying very hard to iron out all the problems people are experiencing!

A plus for me is my AAC files now play with Media player where they wouldn't before .... but I'm still plagued by the annoying stutter , slow down and skip (although minor) throughout video playback!

It almost looks like its an encoding problem, but when it changes the point at where it happens every time I play the same file. Had hoped this update would fix it, but alas its exactly the same.

Keep up the good work trying to fix everything!

Do I Have to update to beta 7 from apple2TV

Submitted by Anon on September 7, 2011 - 5:53am

Is FLAC a supported format now? I'm trying to play a folder with FLAC files and they are not being seen by atv.

Submitted by darren.blackley on September 7, 2011 - 8:17am

Great update and i am very pleased to see the new backup option - i have been backing up manually for SSH.  Can you add to the wish list the ability to choose a local path to back up to - I have plenty of space on all my NAS' and it would be a heaps faster too as i have Gigabit ethernet all through my home :D

Cheers

Darren

Content with iTunes DRM is not currently supported. However, in 2009 Apple removed all DRM from music sold via iTunes, so chances are a lot of your music will work just fine.
