We are pleased to announce the release aTV Flash (black) Beta7 for the 2nd generation AppleTV.

Beta7 is a major update for aTV Flash (black) and brings a number of great new features to the 2nd gen AppleTV including music playback, Last.fm powered artist slideshows, cloud backups and more.

Keep reading to learn more about what's new.

Music Playback

A new music player has been built into Media Player, which allows you to stream most music file types from a Mac, PC or NAS drive without using iTunes. During playback, album art, track info, and artist images will automatically be downloaded from Last.fm. Artist images are used in slideshows that can be viewed while music is playing in the background. Support for folder playlists is also included.

During playback you can navigate away from the current track, and a new 'Now Playing' option will appear in the main menu which allows you to quickly jump back into your playlist.

Cloud Backups

We've added a new cloud backup feature that provides a way to easily backup all your 3rd party (Firecore, XBMC, Plex, etc...) settings and data to the cloud. Once backed up, a list of your previously saved backups will be available allowing you to to easily restore one of them if needed.

Backups are stored securely in the cloud and will remain linked to the AppleTV's serial number - this means they will always be available even if you update or restore your AppleTV.

Metadata Views

Media Player now features three distinct options for viewing different types of metadata. The the left (<<) and right (>>) buttons can be used to cycle through the views when browsing through your media. More details on each view can be found below.
  1. General (default) view - This is the first view and contains a portion of the synopsis, and other info like who's in the movie and when it was released.
  2. Synopsis view - This is the second view and shows the full movie synopsis.
  3. Technical view - This is the third view and shows technical information about the video file.

Yes, simply select any items that have the word 'Update' next to them.

What kind of features are you looking for?

Is there going to be a Real Browser so we can surf the internet via the apple TV ????

Can still not understand why you put so much effort building a media player while Xbmc is really amazing!
Why not trying to integrate better Xbmc core function within iOS environment and focus on other things?

On my side, Media PLayer takes ages (5min to list all available shares) to access my NAS (Synology in afp) and makes it totally unusable...

Same here... just a green screen with audio.. but previews work okay. Youtube not working after upgrading.

Thanks for the great work! I've installed the latest ATV black and it is definately better than the last release;

However same as the last beta, the ATV stalled for a very long time before it goes in when select Mantenance.

Also any chance media selection using remote HD? I want to select and play music files without switching on my projector.

James,

Can you tell me if there is coming support for DNLA?

Submitted by neoantho on September 8, 2011 - 3:21am

I'm really missing a settings menu to select audio track and subtitles on mkv files.

Is there any function that I didn't see?

Great product. Any chance of adding a genius or pandora like option in future releases for creating music playlists? Would be great. Thanks.

Hey,

first of all....Great Job folks !

i just installed it to test the AC3 and DTS 5.1 support but sadly still that strange static noise  no Dolby Digital....

is it my fault or is still not every setup supported? I'm at IOS 4.2.1(2100) ATv flash Beta7 media Player 0.8-144748

Receiver: harman/Kardon AVR132 connected with optical cabel

with the older appletv version i think 4.1 it just works perfect! but since i updated my ATV there is no Dolby Digital anymore XBMC or MediaPlayer

Is The music player compatible with 24bit /96 files? Is it bit-perfect? Will Apple tv2 output 24 Bit / 96 Khz via toslink ??? If yes i will buy atv software now! Regards

Hi James,

This is a great update, but I have a large number of video files which still don't play properly with the latest Media Player - the audio and video is choppy. These are played from a Windows Home Server and are encoded with Windows Media Video 9 / Windows Media Audio 2 / 672x544. Files with a resolution of 720x404 from the same server play perfectly.

Any ideas?

Submitted by james on September 8, 2011 - 2:00pm

Can you run one of the files through MediaInfo and send in the specs?

You may try updating your AppleTV to 4.3 (re-jailbreak with Seas0nPass) to see if you have better results.

Submitted by james on September 8, 2011 - 2:01pm

Some fancier playlist options will be available in a future version.

Submitted by james on September 8, 2011 - 2:02pm

Audio tracks can be selected through the Playback menu. The playback menu can be accessed by holding the center (select) button while a video is playing.

Support for embedded subtitles will be available soon.

Submitted by james on September 8, 2011 - 2:03pm

Potentially in a future version, but no ETA just yet.

Submitted by james on September 8, 2011 - 2:05pm

Which Maintenance menu are you having trouble with? The Manage Extras menu pulls live info from the Internet, so if it's loading slowly there it may be an issue with your network connection.

You should be able to use Remote HD's VNC option to navigate menus without turning on your projector. More details on this feature can be found at: http://remotehd.com/AppleTV/Overview

Submitted by james on September 8, 2011 - 2:06pm

I'll pass along the idea. Perhaps it can be added in a future version.

In regards to cloud:

When Saving to the cloud, where is the information stored? Also, Once a Backup completes successfully are future backups just adding to the previous backups, or is it a whole new complete backup?

In regards to Media:

Is there a way to Automatically Fetch all Movies Metadata instead of Manually retrieving by clicking on each Movie? Also, if Metadata is incorrect is there a way to manually fetch? Reason: I have the Cartoon named: Rio.(2011).mp4 and it shows up as the movie: "Fast Five" with Vin Diesel? I have other Movies that aren't showing the proper Metadata as well. I see that the Metadata is coming from TMDb, but when I do a search there Rio shows properly like it should.

Any chance of a Search Feature and a Sort by Feature in the next release?

I installed Plex client from beta7 but I dont see it from main menu.

With beta6 works perfect, I tried to go to again but the installer dont let me.

Submitted by Anon on September 8, 2011 - 6:12pm

I just updated to beta 7 from beta 6, and i was testing out the music player when it crashed. My ATV restarted and now the menus are extremely slow. When i click on nito tv or anything in the maintenance menu, it will take at least 10 seconds to open. What's worse is when I come back to the main menu, all of the other tabs (like the normal settings, internet, computers etc..) are also very slow. For example when i go to settings, the sub menus (general...sleep now etc.) will take about 5-10 seconds to show up, and then again there will be a delay when selecting one of them.

I already uninstalled xbmc which was a pain in itself due to the new 4.3.

Any Ideas BESIDES SENDING A SUPPORT TICKET. (I WILL DO THAT TOO BUT ANYTHING I CAN DO NOW?)

Thanks

Are backups working now or are we waiting for icloud to go live? Mine spins on saving new backup but never completes and shows no file to restore in the restore from backup menu. Thanks.

I have the same question and would also buy in a nanosecond if this is possible

Backups are currently working. If you're having trouble please send in a bug report so we can look into it.

Backups are saved to the AWS cloud - each backup is independent of the others, so older backups can be deleted if so desired. After installing today's Maintenance update the size of each backup can be viewed through the restore menu.

Fetch all, and metadata correction options are in the works and should be available soon. Search and sort by features are also planned.

What about Hotspot Shield again. one of the main reasons buying this software was to VPN or shield the IP adresses.

I had updated to beta 7 the day it came out and backed up my data to the cloud. You have a had 2 more updates to Maintenance, one each in the last couple of days, and now the backup I created is no longer seen in the Settings options. Did you delete my earlier backup?

I created one more backup today and that too does not appear in the restore option. Basically having a blank screen. I know it worked when the first release to beta 7 was brought out since I saw my backup listed in the Restore option.

Please sort out these bugs, especially in the Backup function if people are to use this with confidence.

Also, please please add FLAC support to Media Player. Its the only thing I'm left wanting from the Media Player.

Appreciate your hard work!

Submitted by james on September 10, 2011 - 6:40pm

Hmm - sorry about that. Would you mind sending in a bug report so we can track down why your backups aren't being saved?

What about unicode subtitle support?

Submitted by michelep.9245 on September 11, 2011 - 4:57am

HI,

I'm streaming media from a folder shared on my iMac, and I have the same problems. Movies (especially the long ones) are choppy and can't be cached correctly; after a few minutes the audio gets out of sync.. making it impossible to watch.

What's going on? the previous version of the media software seemed to be much more stable..

How can I roll back to the previous version? Unfortunately I haven't created an SHSH blob previously, so maybe can I just re-do the whole jailbreak & installation process using the previous firecore release (provided it's available somewhere) ? ? ?

Many thanks in advance..

embedded subtitle on mkv files, is what I miss too. But works fine with srt now

90% of my ATV2 usage is based on mkv movies. With beta7 I play them without any problem, but it is very offen buffering during a 720p 4-5 Gb movie

Submitted by guymurkin on September 11, 2011 - 11:09am

Im using Timecapsule which works great with the Media player, however it can not see an external drive that has music and movies on it which is plugged in to the TC USB. If I create a shortcut in the Time capsule it can't see that either.

Do you think this can be done if not now perhaps you have something in the pipeline, saving me copying all my media files over?

Thanks

Enjoying the media player, but how about a remote app for iPhone/iPad. Something like 'XBMC Commander'.
