Seas0nPass has been updated to support a TETHERED jailbreak of the new AppleTV 4.4 (iOS 5) software released on 10/12 (also supported are the new minor updates - 4.4.1 released on 10/17, 4.4.2 released on 10/24, 4.4.3 released on 11/17, and 4.4.4 released on 12/16). Full details on what's new in 4.4, status of 3rd party features, and how to update are below.

Should I update?

Currently the jailbreak for 4.4+ is tethered, which is a bit less convenient than an untethered version. If the features added in 4.4 excite you it may be worth updating; however, the previous 4.3 version will continue to be supported so updating is not required.

The full list of changes included in 4.4 can be found below:

  • AirPlay Mirroring: Now with video mirroring – wirelessly stream what’s on your iPad 2 screen to your HDTV.
  • Photo Stream: View photos recently taken on your iOS device and pushed to your Photo Stream in iCloud.
  • Trailers: A whole new way to browse and view hundreds of the latest theatrical trailers.
  • National Hockey League: Watch live games. View highlights, scores, and more.
  • Wall Street Journal Live: Watch up-to-date news, business commentary, and financial analysis from leading experts.

Apple has also added support for subtitles in Netflix and three new slideshow themes: Photo Wall, Flip-up, and Shifting Tiles.

Which plugins are supported on 4.4?

  • Couch Surfer (works)
  • (works)
  • Media Player (works)
  • NitoTV (works)
  • Overflow (works)
  • Remote HD (works)
  • Rowmote (works)
  • RSS Feeds (works)
  • Weather (works)
  • XBMC (nightly builds only)
  • Plex (not working)

How do I update?

Seas0nPass will default to the latest untethered version, which is currently 4.3. If you want to use Seas0nPass to update and jailbreak a newer version simply follow the steps below.

  1. Download version 4.4.4 (9A406a) and save the IPSW in an easy to find location.
  2. Download the latest version of Seas0nPass.
  3. Open Seas0nPass and Option + click (Mac) or Shift + click (PC) the Create IPSW button and select the new IPSW file that was downloaded in step #1.
  4. Seas0nPass will complete the jailbreak and restore process automatically.
  5. After the restore is complete, move the AppleTV to your TV and follow the steps for performing a Tethered Boot.

A demo video that outlines the tethered jailbreak process can be found here.

Enjoy. :)

Update: It seems Apple has taken down the 4.4.1 AppleTV update due a number of reported issues. For now 4.4 is the recommended version for those wishing to update.

Update 2: The 4.4.1 version has been re-released.

Update 3: Seas0nPass has been updated to support AppleTV 4.4.2 - released on 10/24.

Update 4: Seas0nPass has been updated to support AppleTV 4.4.3 - released on 11/17.

Update 5: Seas0nPass has been updated to support AppleTV 4.4.4 - released on 12/15.

Getting Error 3194 when itunes tries to load custim firmware

Submitted by Anon on October 20, 2011 - 7:17am

Well i got mine to work eventually after receiving the 1601,1604,3614 errors etc). I downloaded official 4.4.1 (9a335a) at the top of this page and updated software via iTunes via shift and restore (windows) chosing the ipsw file where i stored it.

So now it was in an unjailbroken state.

Then using seas0npass created ipsw from the same downloaded file at the beginning of this post (9a335a official). Then put apple tv 2 into dfu mode as per normal but with power lead attached - it was the only way it would go into dfu mode for me and was left in throughout restoring process - was the same when i 1st restored it too.

Seas0npass then uploaded the the jailbreak and the ipsw was successfully created. Then i did shift restore again in iTunes this time using the seas0npass created ipsw file. This is done automatically if you agree to it when the window comes up asking you. After that i got no error codes during restore process and then did the tethered boot and everything is working perfectly.

Sorry the 4.4.1 (9a335a) is not at the top of this page, it's at the top of this one:

For the love of god, I cannot get this to work. I have tried just about everything.

No need for Seas0nPass if you have an iPad2 to view movies outside iTunes - I just upgraded to ATV 4.2.1 (Apple legit, not jailbroken) and use AirPlay Mirroring on my iPad2 along with the Plex app to stream my video collection.  Works like a charm :-)

When jailbreaking ATV2 running 4.3 with seas0npass, I discovered that there was a problem when the screensaver had been active. Exiting the screensaver caused the picture to disappear, and a reboot of the ATV2 was required. This was a showstopper for me, as I often enjoy to stream music to the ATV2 while the screensaver runs a slideshow on my TV.

Does the 4.4 jailbreak suffer from the same issue? This would be even more annoying, as a computer currently is needed during the boot process.

No such issues with 4.4.1 Jailbreak...

Submitted by hasek53 on October 21, 2011 - 8:13am

I just followed the steps above for tethered and untethered jailbreak and worked fine for me. No need of XBMC if you have media player from aTV Flash and finally I can use the NHL app!!!!

Is there any way to stream non itunes files from Atv2 to ipad2? Jailbroken of course..

Submitted by james on October 21, 2011 - 11:11am

This is not an issue in the 4.4+ versions of AppleTV.

If you're still running the 4.3 version, the latest version of Maintenance includes a workaround for this issue (update via Maintenance --> Manage Extras).

I bought this product nearly one year ago and it's still considered "beta." That's all I have to say about that.

Submitted by minh huud.0772 on October 21, 2011 - 6:54pm

Is there anyway to get around boot tethered on 4.4 whenever you unplug the power? I had 4.4.1 jailbreaked but it wants a tethered whenever I unplug the power cord. This is a hassle thing to face, will this be solve in future seasonpass?

Submitted by filips01 on October 21, 2011 - 9:10pm

Confirmed as working fully with aTV2 4.4.1 and iTunes 10.5 OS X

I too agree, i dont have a laptop at home all the time, and with out it, i can not use my AppleTV2. This is pain in the Butt. please help.

Ok so I have 2 ATVs both using seas0nPass and atv flash. One is with 4.4.1 and the other I have at 4.4. What is crazy is my screen saver on both ATVs will only do "floating". If I switch to a different kind, it will not work. Can anyone else confirm this being an issue. Again, I have tested this on two of my ATVs and they both have this issue. Thanks!

Submitted by Stingray88 on October 22, 2011 - 8:03am

You have a fundamental misunderstanding of the unimportance of the term "beta". That word just means it's not in it's finished state. The developers of any software label version numbers however they choose and it means absolutely nothing, it's still the same software. However I bought ATV Flash a long time ago too... and have been using it very happily ever since then. It works just fine with less bugs than XBMC (a piece of software that isn't in "beta").

TL;DR: The fact that ATV Flash is still classified in beta is entirely irrelevant. That's all I have to say about that.

Quick question for the group. In the 4.4 ios for ATV 2, it says it can do display mirroring for iPad2 but i have also read that the iPhone 4s can mirror it's display via airsharing. Is this correct??

Submitted by Anon on October 22, 2011 - 2:38pm

I get " Connect to iTunes"-Logo any idea how to fix that ???

Submitted by Anon on October 22, 2011 - 2:39pm

"Patching Ramdisk" nightmare for the last two days. On MacBook Pro, new Apple TV 4.4.1 ... updated iTunes and Seas0nPass. No .bundle files in Library, (no ~Library/plugins/ folder either)...

Any other work arounds?

Submitted by thegorg on October 22, 2011 - 3:23pm

hi you need to connect your computer to the ATv2 in tethered boot module, then when directed unplug usb and input your hdmi, never disconnecting the power or rebooting the AVt2. not a great solution unless you have a laptop next to your ATv2 every time you need to reboot it.

Thanks guys for this jailbreak, it successfully jailbreaks but I have noticed a problem after the jailbreak. Basically, all the Apple Movie Trailers and other streaming video stops working, it just waits forever to start streaming. I jailbroke the ATV2 (with 4.4.1) numerous times and each time I could stream no problem without the jailbreak but as soon as I JB the device, I could not stream anymore.

Has anyone seen this problem and know if there is a workaround? I have already tried numerous times and each time the JB seemed successful (.e.g. I could SSH into the ATV2) but I had to restore in iTunes to get back the ability to stream again, so it definitely looks like something odd is being "patched" during the JB which causes the video to stop streaming.

Just put the apple tv to sleep when your not using it. If u need to restart for some reason do it int maintenance section and it'll restart without the need for your laptop. Why do u need to unplug??

Submitted by Anon on October 23, 2011 - 8:08am

This what I am doing , I never disconnect power.

To validate this I didn;t do the tethered boot I Connected the ATV2 before the boot to see if Itunes loaded the custom IPSW properly but seems like something is wrong on loading the custom IPSW using iTunes , i get logo also without tethered boot.

Submitted by Anon on October 23, 2011 - 8:41am

More specific info please on how to work around this if one only has jailbroken so far?

Submitted by Anon on October 23, 2011 - 10:05am

I think the answer is to install com.nito.sshack and reboot. Works well now!

Submitted by t-bat on October 23, 2011 - 11:55am

Nice work! But I agree with thegorg. Also looking forward to updates. If its possible to find an easy update process, that would be great! thanks! / t-bat

Submitted by t-bat on October 23, 2011 - 11:57am

i didnt succeed on first try, i had to make a regular itunes restore. then i made a new try, and i managed to get through. now i disconnected the powercord to the atv and i needed to redo the boot tethered-button again, but now it seem to be back on track. to be continued... =) / t-bat

Anyone having issues when you unplug the ATV2 and it goes to the itunes lug logo. I've JB already using 4.4.1 and it works but soon as I unplug it to put it on my projector. that logo would show up then i would have to tether boot it again

Submitted by realitymatt on October 23, 2011 - 11:04pm

The jailbreak works a treat - Thank you!  To ask a quetion worthy of Captain Obvious, is there a possibility of an untethered jailbreak version of SeasOnPass for 4.4?  If so, when do we think this might be expected?

Submitted by Anon on October 24, 2011 - 6:09am

after jb on my atv2 4.4 (jb to 4.3) with seas0nPass i cant restore or do anything. Just getting Error 9 in iTunes
I have tryed diffrent USBcables and many computers.
I have tryed to jb again to 4.4 and 4.4.1 but nothing helps.

Submitted by Anon on October 24, 2011 - 6:50am

You'll need to carry out the boot tethered process using the power supply at your projector so there is no interuption in power supply after it boots - long usb extension perhaps if your pc/laptop is far away?!?

Submitted by Anon on October 24, 2011 - 6:53am

After jailbreak process you have to boot it tethered to your pc/laptop with no interuption in power supply after it boots. If it's appearing for some other reason then restart the whole jailbreaking process and boot tethered.

Submitted by james on October 24, 2011 - 9:15am

Which version of Seas0nPass was used for the jailbreak? This issue was corrected in the version of Seas0nPass which was released after Apple re-released the 4.4.1 update.

The list of what works says that XBMC doesn't work with 4.4.1 but of course I had to try anyway.

I installed the latest nightly build from the XBMC forums and it works great. At least for IceFilms which is all I really use it for. Just thought I would put that out there in case anyone cared.

Submitted by Anon on October 24, 2011 - 10:37pm

Error 9
Due to asr being patched, the SHA signature is automatically changed and after being resigned the kernel will refuse to use it. Therefore proper kernel patches are required. If necessary kernel patches are not applied, it will fail to load asr and error 9 would occur during restore.
Rebooting your Mac or PC may resolve this issue.

R.I.P ?

Submitted by Anon on October 24, 2011 - 11:27pm

Well, I wish I hadn't taken your word for it. I just upgraded my ATV2, fired up Plex on my iPad 2 and tried AirPlay Mirroring, only to see how truly horrible the streaming quality is. I'd say "it works", but it's far from "works like a charm".

Update #2: A second version or the new version(4.4.3)?

Please let us know, I'd rather not brick my AppleTV just yet.

Is it possible to downgrade a new appletv to 4.3 using Seas0npass? Or is an issue of shsh blobs like on newer iphones?

Submitted by macmanjimmy on October 25, 2011 - 11:11pm

ahhhhhh finally downgraded 4.4.2, 4.4.1, 4.4, 4.3 via Window'7 which appears more forgiving or doesn't know any better in terms of downgrading… NEVER AGAIN will i update
